This has been my local for more than 40 years and we had Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife’s birthday. As always the staff were attentive and polite but with that friendliness that is the Wheatsheaf. The traditional Sunday roast was excellent, but better still was the pan fried pollack in a lemon caper sauce - stunning. Thanks to you all.

An excellent waitress attended to our order of main course and drinks. Whilst my companion's burger with sides was good, my stroganoff was strange (red in colour) and having a horrible barbecue sauce flavour, no cream (like) or onion, used. They only needed to say "apologies, we don't have the correct ingredients today; would you like... (x) instead." Not good cheffing.

This is a brilliant pub, both for food and drinks. The different rooms offer a varied experience depending on what you're after. Restaurant area for food, lounge area for a quiet drink, games area for pool and darts or TV area for watching sports. Food is fantastic, the bombay chicken burger is amazing and needs to stay on the menu. Good priced drinks for a village pub too. Will absolutely return.

Myself and my husband had a lovely Sunday lunch yesterday. We both ordered the beef which was cooked exactly to our liking (pink) and loads of it, accompanied with home made yorkies, roast potatoes, swede & potato mash and plenty of greens, all piping hot! Didn't think we could manage a dessert but glad we did! Homemade apple crumble and custard, yummy! The staff were very attentive and friendly, what more could you ask for? Fab food and staff. An appalling meal - it was a Monday night. Received a nice welcome, though the staff did not even know what beers were available on tap which was understandable as they were students doing a holiday job. Ordered our meal but it was dire. To start, the calamari were served with seafood sauce, not tartare. Strange. Our main meal arrived on stone cold plates. The Beef and Ale pie itself was very good and hot enough at the start, as were the potatoes. However, the Puff Pastry crust was uncooked, a soggy mess. The beans and peas, good, but only warm thanks to the cold plate. The manager offered not to charge for the meal but, as we had eaten most of it, that was not appropriate. The only explanation for the disaster was that the person in charge of the kitchen was totally inexperienced and inept.

The menu contained all the classic starters and mains as well as a good selection of steaks we all had various starter and mains, mine was fish day, whitebait and then cold and chips, a nice touch, garden or mushy pea. I’ve come in this evening, to be greeted by pleasantly warm decor. A very friendly young man showed us to a table and immediately asked us what we would like to drink. They left us to take a look at the menu for 10-15 mins and didn’t seem to want to get us in and out in a rushed fashion. This was great as many places do adopt this behaviour. The food didn’t take long to come and the waitress’s served us with a smile. Have eaten here several times and it’s always been okay without being exceptional. Last night was a disaster. We had an early evening booking and as the menus arrived we were told that all of the steaks were off. They are a significant element of the menu and at least two of us had mentally already chosen steak. The pub was very busy. It was busy last week end as I couldn’t get a table. So not a one off then on the demand side: whomever is ordering the food needs to rethink their approach. So to the wine. The bottle arrived at the table open. I hate that. I want to feel sure that I am drinking what I have paid the markup to drink. The waiting staff may be young but surely they can be trained to open a bottle at the table. So to the food. Again mostly ok without being either exciting or exceptional. That is except for the gammon steak. Exceptional in the sense that it was cooked like a piece of crispy bacon: completely dry with blackened edges. I don’t do complaining these days as I don’t have the energy. I paid up and we left.Unless there are changes: best avoided when they are busy I’d say.

I visited the Wheatsheaf 2 weeks ago with a works group of 14 and we waited from 6pm until approx 9.30 with no sign of dessert order being taken. 10 people left as they were fed up of waiting, most saying they would not return. I returned there again tonight for a family meal and had almost the exact same experience, waited ages for main then no one came to take dessert menu although lots of staff walking back and fore clearing tables. In the end we paid and left without desserts or coffee. Very disappointing as we have visited on over 12 occasions before and had excellent food and service. Would definitely think twice about visiting anytime soon, especially if for a special occasion. The food is always very good but sadly the service is some of the slowest I’ve seen!

This pub was actually our third choice for dinner but we ended up here as the other restaurants were fully booked...VERY glad that it turned out this way! The staff were very friendly and helpful and every single dish we ordered was delicious! We both ordered the French burger and I can say it was hands down the best burger I’ve ever eaten! The calamari starter was also shockingly good. Smaller restaurants tend to not cook squid well but this pub isn’t one of them, it was incredible! Neither of us had high expectations as we thought we would get basic pub grub and although the menu does reflect more of a traditional pub menu the quality of the food is out of this world! We would 100% recommend eating here and will definitely be back ourselves.

There was plenty of vegetarians dishes for starters but there was only one main meal option. It was chickpea and sweet potato curry. It was so spicy you couldn’t even taste the potatoes or anything else. Only having one vegetarian option isn’t enough. They could at least have vegetarian gravy so we could have a roast with no meat.

We are regulars here! The food is always of a good standard and is very reasonably priced. Traditional pub fare. It’s always our go-to pub when we are feeling lazy and want dinner out. Very family friendly - much more so than the other pub in the village. Whenever we have visitors, we come here. Great selection of real ales and gins. My only negative feedback is the location of the pool table in the main bar. When it’s busy and you want to play, people stand too close to the table. My husband and son were playing recently and people were not respecting the fact they were playing, which upset my son. Have the table removed if people don’t have adequate room to play. A couple of free games when it’s quiet wouldn’t go amiss.

Just popped in for lunch, looking for new venue locally, just a quick bar meal. FANTASTIC as an enthusiastic carnivore I don't normally go for meat free, but was strangely drawn to the Falafel, hummus and pepper ciàbatta. Fantastic flavours, fresh, lovely bread, nicely dressed side salad. Wifey had Butternut and veg soup and really enjoyed it too.

My partner and I visited on Sunday for a roast dinner. My partner is a meat eater and I am vegan, but I certainly didn't miss out! The vegan roast was extremely tasty and came with all the trimmings you would expect. And, if you didn't fancy a roast, they even had a vegan chilli amd curry available. Lovely food and great service - would definitely recommend to all! Yummy!

My last recent review concerned a hotel in Cork whose customer service excelled. This was matched by this pub. There was a long delay between starter and main which was never fully explained but once the error was spotted the staff went way beyond what I would have expected to put the matter right....and by the way the food when it came was excellent.I could not ask for more.

It's been a while since we dined at the Wheatsheaf and this was an ad-hoc visit after a busy day. Portion size was good, the steak was cooked just right, plenty of garlic butter and frites perfect!

This is really the only serious pub in Magor for real ale, normally 4 hand pumps with a good varied selection he pub always has a good vibe and a mix of ages frequenting.

This is my local, and we had a friend stay at the weekend, so we had an evening meal in the restaurant. On the "specials" menu was Salmon Nicoise, which I chose. However I asked if I could swap the salad for garlic mash. This was done without any fuss, and I was served with the most delicious piece of salmon I have had in a long time. The garlic mash was excellent, and the meal was served with a creamy tarragon sauce. The meals that my wife and our friend had were equally delicious and they both enjoyed the food, but believe me I had the best deal! To make it even better I had a couple of pints of Evan Evans Warrior, a real ale straight from the barrel. All in all an excellent evening.

Sunday roast is tasteless, very underwhelming and stingy. Bar man was weird and abrupt and the waitresses were poorly trained school girls. They were on their phones a lot and talked under their breath to one another. Won’t be rushing back.

Having not been to The Greyhound for a year or so, I was thrilled with our choice. Nothing had changed, everything was as good as before. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. Despite the restaurant being busy, Service was prompt and friendly and the food ( Steak & Kidney Pie / Fruity Chicken Curry ) was plentiful and delicious. Highly recommended. We certainly won't leave it so long till we return

Beautiful location and beer garden is beautiful next to the river, however the barmaid was very snappy with my boyfriend and it seemed very clicky. A shame as it would be beautiful in the summer months

Another enjoyable visit to the Holland Arms. Usual friendly welcome and great service. We shared a duck starter from the specials board, amazing, especially the sauce. We then had lamb and steak as our mains. Both meats were delicious as were the accompanying vegetables. Good choice of wine (I enjoyed the Malbec). Couldn’t resist a bread and butter pudding for dessert - even though full. Look forward to our next visit - probably one of the Christmas meals now being advertised. Very reasonable bill.
