Lovely atmosphere, went at 7pm and was full of diners, including children, was nearly empty by 8.30, it was the best meal out I’ve had in years, I had chicken and Quattro pate for starters and nut roast for main and it was gorgeous. Was too full for desert, all my family enjoyed their meals too, would highly recommend this place, best meal in Whitby

My Wife and I visited this Pub Restuant on recommendation from the Landlady at our B&B.The establishment was just a short drive from where we were staying at Grosmont, and our meals were superb in a nice atmosphere. There is exellent car parking. It is advisable to book,I would say there was not much chance of turning up and getting a table during the summer months.

The sheaf as it’s fondly known by locals is one of the many outstanding places to eat and drink the North Yorkshire moors national park has to offer. As with most popular and excellent places to eat no mater WHERE it is in the country booking is essential to avoid disappointment. The landlord doesn’t mess around and at Times can seem quite blunt, however this is all in aid of providing excellent food and service to his customers that have booked ahead and are ACTUALLY sat in his restaurant. It is a small pub with a small dining room so it can be difficult to accept walk in diners and it famously flatly refuses to serve “Gallon walkers” who can cause a unpleasant experience for family’s and take over the small but perfectly formed bar area. I have visited many times over the years and NEVER had a bad experience. Ignore winging reviewers, pick up the phone, book a table, turn up on time and enjoy a wonderful meal with good beer at a very reasonable price. If that’s too much to ask then please take your custom to one of the many other pubs and restaurants the national park has to offer, this place will still be full of locals and tourists alike enjoying a great meal. Note. I am absolutely not affiliated with the wheat sheaf or it’s owners in anyway. I am simply just tired of reading reviews from easily offended tourists slating the place which in turn may influence people and then them miss out on a genuinely excellent meal in a fantastic genuine countryside pub.

This is a lovely pub in the countryside. My husband and I both had the Spanish pizza which was amazing. What let it down was when I checked the bill before paying there was a £1 "voluntary donation". When I queried this with the bar staff I was told they partnered with a local charity and this was a donation to it. They didn't know the name of the charity but thought it was to do with homelessness.

I went on a Tuesday evening thinking the pub would not be busy but we only just managed to get a table. The food and service was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, I had the salmon with a delicious sauce, followed with a trio of puddings which were all beautifully presented. This is one of the few local pubs with a good website that has a menu so you can see clearly if the variety of food and the prices are suitable. I will definitely go again.

The Wheatsheaf serves consistently good food, always freshly prepared and the prices are very reasonable. If you're visiting Whitby it is definitely worth a visit! The only drawback is the large dining room at the back of the pub which is lacking in atmosphere. We stopped for lunch the other week as we happened to be passing but we were the only two in the back room and it felt cold and unwelcoming. It's not as bad at night (I was there for a celebration with friends a month ago) when the room is full and there is a cosy fire going. The decor in that room needs a total rethink as it has always felt sparse. I think this is a shame as the Wheatsheaf serves some of the best food in the area.

Where do I start, a group of us were celebrating a milestone birthday and decided to complete the gallon walk !! A route was planned and it was decided we would start and end our walk at the Wheatsheaf Inn - well that was a mistake. The welcome when we arrived as a few of us attempted to park at the front of the pub was not great,,,,, basically told 'don't park there car park at back', so we did as told and thought maybe just early morning blues, however the welcome we all recieved at the end of the walk was very similar, not what you would expect a country hostelry to portray!! The guy behind the bar presume the owner/licencee was rather rude and and didnt crack a smile all the time we were there other than to his locals who were quite put out when our large group descended leaving the door ajar for everyone to get in. Compared to the welcome we recieved from the owner/licencee at The Postgate Egton Bridge, he was fantastic, was the total opposite, appreciated our custom and went the extra mile by joining in on our celebrations. Basically Im saying unless you are a local avoid The Wheatsheaf Inn like the plague, definitely needs a course in public relations

I had booked lunch at the Wheatsheaf following a family recommendation and having phoned over a week before to be told we had the last table we travelled with high expectations. We need not have worried, the welcome was friendly and after a short wait we were taken through to the dining room. Just roasts on a Sunday lunch but you can mix and match and the meats were really tasty and tender. Nine different vegetables (all cooked beautifully) including a large bowl of gorgeous roast potatoes and two Yorkshire puddings made for a fabulous lunch. The four of us shared two portions of the trio of desserts and left saying that we would definitely return. Cost between £20 - £25 each including wine and beers.

Of course I give as much notice as possible. The Wheatsheaf is an attractive country pub with some tables outside too. When we booked they were very particular about the time we could come so as to spread the orders through the kitchen and on arrival the place was busy. We were shown straight to our table in the dinning room and drinks brought out to us.We shared a starter of garlic bread which was OK but a tad underwhelming being a generous serving of grilled French stick with garlic butter rather than the ciabatta on the menu. For a main course I chose the sirloin steak which came with a salad, grilled tomatoes, fried onions and a bowl of thick cut chips. Every bit of it was excellent. The steak itself was perfectly cooked to order and very tender. I'm only an occasional steak eater but this was certainly one of the best. The chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Coming in a warmed Pyrex bowl they stayed hot till the end of the meal.My wife went for Hake in a Dill sauce and I'm reliably informed that it was very good. The pudding menu had a good twist allowing you to choose a full size pudding or three small ones. We chose to share three small ones which were good; a brioche bread and butter pudding, lemon posset and a Bailey's chocolate mousse. We finished of with expresso and a Bailey's hot chocolate which wasn't on the menu but the waiter agreed to make when asked.Service was good.

I enjoyed an incredibly light four cheese soufflé followed by a (happily) not so light bread and butter pudding. My wife enjoyed her fish cakes and trio of deserts. We had been a little worried that the Wheatsheaf might not be a hugely welcoming place for a couple of tourists with springer in tow, having such a good reputation for good food and more of a restaurant focus. We needn't have worried. The landlord is a lovely chap. The bar frequented by a few friendly regulars enjoying lunch and (I imagine) a family visit taking place with kids enjoying themselves around the pub. No idea whether it has the same kind of atmosphere in the evening, but certainly a nice place to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

After having several meals with lots of fried and greasy elements, this was what I'd been waiting for on this trip. The food was all locally sourced, made from scratch, and wholesome. Our family had seafood stew, pork belly, mushroom soup, garlic bread, Whitby scampi, and two trios of their fabulous desserts. I have eaten in restaurants all over the world and I rate The Wheatsheaf at Egton amongst my best 'good food' experiences. An imaginative compact menu, freshly cooked and served with panache, the excellent food in this restaurant beats many of the Michelin Star type restaurants charging double the price for half the quality..This is not a 'posers' restaurant. The landlord is a no none sense owner, with a very successful restaurant, nearly always fully booked. The locally sourced food is presented with flair, lots of fresh vegetables, and very generous portions. On our recent visit my wife and I enjoyed monk-fish starters, slow cooked lamb in a piquant sauce accompanied by a variety of fresh vegetables - all served piping hot, and a trio of deserts to finish. Added to our bill was a sherry, a glass of wine, and two halves of Black Sheep bitter. Total = £55.75.What good food! What good value! How wonderful to enjoy a really well cooked meal in a restaurant which can live up to its reputation. Make sure you book well in advance.
