Scruffy interior - not clean. We ordered lunch and sat outside. Was given a box of cutlery condiments with various sauces to carry to our table outside. , the dispenser lid of the mustard was black with ancient sticky dried on mustard and dirt. i told the one member of staff who apologised, took it away, threw it in the bin behind the bar, but did not replace . No salt or pepper. Waited nearly an hour to be served.. food was dumped on our table with no apology. My sea bass was served swimming in oil. No waiting on tables ourside so not easy to complain after such a long wait. Moved inside as we were cold and asked for a coffee - the same one member of staff who was behind the bar as well as serving food, looked shocked and seemed nervous of such a request but agreed to try to make us one coffee and one tea but then came to our table o say she couldn't work the machine - so no hot drinks!! We left and will not be returning.i regretted paying up front for such a poorly cooked and presented and delayed lunch.

Avoid at all cost for their food. Had fish and chips was the worst I’ve ever had. Service slow and quality of the food so poor, like frozen cod fillets bought cheaply. Such a shame as outside area is nice.

We went yesterday 2/7, and I thought at £19 it was pretty expensive for a roast as is, but then the absolute worst thing ever served going bought out! Firstly, the garlic bread was just toast with too much parsley! Then they must have forgotten about us and after 45 minutes, came the thinnest grey beef that had been microwaved so much the 3 small potatoes were stuck on the plate. With aunt Bessie’s under cooked parsnips, and a tablespoon of uncooked, yet crispy cabbage, and that’s it. We eat out most weekends, and I’ve never seen anything so bad on a plate! £19 for what looks like a burnt/ undercooked kids meal. This place is meant to be owned by a catering company! I’ve had bigger over roasts on a plane!

The roast beef and the gammon were both good. Gammon slightly salty, it does happen. Veggies cooked tastefully. Cabbage was slightly crunchy - just ideal. Syrup sponge was also tasty and came with both custard and ice cream. Service was excellent and attentive. The bar stocks Asahi lager. Overall a pleasant meal, good to go out form Sunday lunch and at a Free House.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday roast with fantastic service, I would highly recommend. We booked a table for 10 for a family roast and everyone enjoyed their food. The roast was chicken, gammon and/ or beef. All equally tasty. Food was hot and extra gravy was brilliant. Desserts were amazing and all equally good so you won’t be disappointed whatever you pick. A great location and we will be back again!

Just popped in on the off chance for a table and we’re lucky enough to get the last table, the food here is really good, one of the best Sunday roasts I have had in a long time , the food was tasty and hot and they delivered extra gravy without even asking ( which is a definite plus for us) . The staff were fantastic, really friendly and made sure that excellent customer service was given , we will definitely return here.

Came for Sunday lunch with friends, 6 of us in total. Nick the owner made us very welcome, getting us drinks before the meal. Dinner was superb (sadly cauliflower cheese was finished) and I asked for a box to take home half my chicken! Desserts were the best, I had a berry eton mess which was superb. Nick is having a wine tasting which I can’t make because of an early start, but I’m sure there will be lots more occasions. Nick and his partner are going to transform this beautiful old pub into something special. Can’t wait to return.

Welcoming, friendly staff and atmosphere; we were celebrating our 57th anniversary and the five different meal choices were served at the correct intervals to allow conversations between courses. Each meal was well presented and tasted very good. It presented no trouble for them when we requested a starter to be made as a main course. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Wheatsheaf for reasonably priced excellent meals and service.

I’ve been driving past The Wheatsheaf for about 18 years and never stopped in, that was until today and quickly realised I should’ve stopped there before. We received one of the friendliest welcomes we have had, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful if they tried. We sat out on the lovely spacious terrace as it was a nice(ish) day. We ordered the chicken smoked bacon and melted cheese ciabatta, and the fish finger ciabatta sandwiches both came with chips and a side salad. Hot, refreshing, delicious are three words to describe them and washed down with a lovely pint of Harveys. There was just enough room for desert which was equally as deeeelish! We will certainly be taking a trip back to The Wheatsheaf and we don’t leave it another 18 years!!! PS, the amazing team of Kerry, Mark, Alan, and Beth said not to mention them so I won’t 😜 PPS, this is a very dog friendly pub!

After a trip to Leonardslee Gardens, we were looking for somewhere to lunch and ended up here, just a couple of miles away, we were glad we did. Very friendly welcome, good standard menu and 3 specials. I thoroughly enjoyed my meatloaf, one of the specials, and my wife enjoyed her liver & bacon from the standard menu. We thought both dishes were a little off the beaten track of pub offerings and showed good originality. We would certainly visit again when in the area.

Late on Saturday afternoon nine of us hit the Wheatsheaf after an exhausting day learning to forage at Roost Hole. The landlady who was sitting with a couple of regulars immediately went behind the bar to help the single barmaid on duty and, to my delight, they were serving two of my favourite beers, Harvey's and London Pride. Our concerns over the welcome for our two rather muddy dogs were immediately placated by the sight of three large dogs taking up as much floor space as they could, the parrot came as a bit of a surprise. We were made to feel most welcome, drinks carried and furniture moved, it rounded off a near perfect day. Thanks

We arrived excited after reading reviews and headed to the garden. We were marking a special occasion as a family so keen to enjoy the afternoon. Unfortunately we were met by an extremely aggressive and rude man who shouted at us that the pub was closed. He said he couldn’t understand how we couldnt see the sign (very rude seems though it was an A4 piece of paper) which of course we hadn’t seen otherwise wouldn’t have continued to enter. He made my 3 year old daughter cry due to his aggression, she was scared and it took for my husband to suggest he stopped being so confrontational for him to walk away. To add insult to injury I am heavily pregnant and my due date is today, however he still felt it was appropriate to stand shouting at me. I am absolutely disgusted by this behaviour and certainly would not recommend this pub. Do not give this man your custom!

The car park was heaving but we were extremely lucky that someone was leaving, I almost changed my mind because it looked busy but I’m glad I didn’t. I was greeted at the door and Becky quickly assessed what we were after and suggested getting drinks at the outdoor bar, said take these menus and order inside when you’re ready. Chatted to the nice gentleman at the outside bar who acknowledged me whilst serving the person in front - nice touch. He also kept on top of clearing & wiping tables along with the rest of the staff. I returned inside and spoke to the lovely Becky again who warned us there’d be a wait. That wasn’t a problem. The food was brought to us by yet another young smiling lady and everything was perfect, great portions too. So very nice to have fantastic customer service - even when they’re busy. Been here a few times. The food and drink is expensive but average in taste and quality. Indoor decor is questionable (unless you like dead animals looking at you while you eat!) Very packed in the summer and very poplar with lunching mums as there is a great kids’ play area. Car parking is awful, about a dozen tight spaces and parking on the main road is dangerous. The food is ok but nothing special and cooked by the owner’s daughter, not a chef. A deep-fried (in dirty oil) celebration of all that is wrong with pub food. The interior is creepy. I think they were aiming for quirky and historic, but sadly they managed to achieve, creepy and derelict. Crammed to the rafters with stuffed animals that would be more at home in a trophy hunter’s drawing room. They are messy, covered in dust (not great in a food prep environment). In short, very bad taste and a poor choice of decor. The parrot at the bar lends nothing the place other than the spreading of germs via it’s stinking faeces. The only saving grace used to be the barman Nick, holding the place together in every way possible and was the biggest draw for locals and repeat visits. Sadly the appalling way the landlady treated him meant that he moved on last year. Not recommended.

We booked here for a Birthday Sunday lunch for a party of 10 including 2 children as the garden looked promising. Unfortunately it was an awful day so we were unable to use it. It’s a quirky pub with lots of unusual ornaments on the ceilings and covering most of the walls. Our table was in the bar area and was a little cramped which meant a bit of manoeuvering to sit around the table. The menus were on the table and I asked if they were serving roasts... apparently they do not during the summer months. Of the 10 family members, 4 of us require gluten free food. They had a gluten free menu with a few choices including sandwiches but they did not have any GF bread, and they didn’t have a child’s lasagne. The menu includes most of the usual pub favourites and all our food was delivered together and each meal was very nice.

Years ago this place was great over the past year it has become awful and declined terribly. Not enough staff and the few there especially the owner are rude and objectionable.

We stopped for lunch on a very hot Saturday with our daughter and grandchildren. The garden is massive with great play facilities for all ages of children. There were plenty of tables in the garden with umbrellas for shade and a ‘tropical’ style patio with more seating and an outside bar and toilets. Very friendly staff, good service, good pub grub with a children’s menu and all reasonably priced. Just what we needed.

We went to this pub a couple of weeks ago, sat outdoors and ordered lunch, with two children meals, food was good and it was served quite quickly. The children enjoyed running about in the large garden and playing in the playground. All in all a good family pub.

Held a reunion lunch here. Very friendly and attentive service. Good food in good-sized portions at reasonable prices. Lovely garden with seating, some shaded, and a kids' play area. Lots of stuffed animals around the bar made for one interesting topic of conversation. There's a gorgeous talking parrot called Smirnoff, who reportedly tells you (if you're there in the evening) when it's time for you to go to bed(!) but since this was lunchtime, he sadly didn't perform. Would most definitely eat here again. Five stars all the way.

Great place to eat and let the kids run around! Only slight criticism would be the lack of staff .... the poor chap was working on his own running back and forth “ knocking up about 30000 steps” but certainly doesn’t discount the rating , lovely place and will return soon!

I recently visited for a friends birthday lunch, ordered chicken, bacon and cheese sandwich, they were good sandwiches. The pub is full of taxidermy which is a little strange but I guess some people like that. The staff are professional and friendly.

We have often passed this attractive looking pub but this time decided to stop for a late lunch. We were warmly greeted and shown a nice table by a window. The decor is very stylish, creating a good atmosphere. Our drinks order was taken and delivered promptly, as was our meal order. M had beef and ale pie and I had grilled chicken served with pappardelle and a creamy sauce. I love pasta and this was a delicious dish. M declared the pie to be first rate. We were going to be good and resist pudding but succumbed to a mini dessert with coffee - caramelised profiteroles. A perfect round off to an excellent meal. We will be back.
