This is a really good pub for beer drinkers. You don't know what they will have on but it always seems to be local ales which seem to always be lovely tasting and good value for money. Its a real old fashioned pub with very friendly staff. My favourite in this area.

I visited the pub on 10 December 2022 and the service provided by Beccy was outstanding. The curry I had was delicious. The Old Rosie cider brilliant. An uncomplicated traditional pub with lovely interior furnishings with lovely back garden. Go there for the extensive food choices at reasonable prices washed down with real ales and or cider. Well done and carry on. Thank you. Ed the cyclist

We popped in here for a drink while on a walk. We were staying at the Meon Valley Country Club Hotel. A good local pub and good local ales. Gin for the wife. Very friendly place, the landlord had good knowledge of the ales and recommended well. Sat in the pub garden as it was a lovely day and the customers were friendly and very chatty, made you feel right at home so to speak. A pleasure to review a lovely pub like this. Would definitely recommend this pub.

All average have to say. dog friendly, as a large woof walks the two rooms, though there seems to be a smell of dogs when sitting down for dinner. Checked wifi speed and is very slow. Food was average, very average. Pies may or may not have been homemade. It's a pub for locals, parking outside means taking your life in your hands. Have to be fair - not for me, probably loved by others.

We were well received with three dogs in tow, the oldest being 1yr and the youngest 4 month, as long as they were on a lead we were very welcome. The food was simple pub food but of excellent quality, being drivers only two of our number was able to partake of the ale, there were no complaints. I would thoroughly recommend this pub as a place to stop off at for a family and pets.

Good food, real ale, friendly atmosphere - a First Class venue. I have only visited here at lunchtimes but it has never failed to impress. Most recently was last week when I enjoyed a delicious plate of ham, egg and chips, together with a couple of pints of Hampshire brewed real ale., all for under 16 pounds.

On the hottest day of the year a party of ten of us were at the Wickham Festivsl and thought we'd walk about two miles from the Festival to what we hoped would be a nice country pub where we could get something to eat. Our party included three children under seven. Two of our number arrived at the pub at 1.50 pm - to be told that the kitchen shut at 2.00pm and they would have to order straight away . They explained that they were part of a larger party - but were told they could be served if they hurried up and ordered but not the rest of the party. The barman/owner tutted and was very grumpy. When the rest of the part arrived with children in tow - still before 2.00 pm - we were told the kitchen epwas shut, they were unable to offer a sandwich and we should have checked before visiting their pub. The owner was rude in the extreme and implied it was our fault and there was nothing he could do. We tried to appeal to his better nature and explained how far we had walked and that we had hungry children and would probably spend a good deal in his pub. He couldn't have cared less - would not advise of anywhere nearby where we could eat - and did so in an aggressive and unpleasant way. When we left one of the regulars came out to speak to us and apologised about the lanlords behaviour and told us that there was an equestrian centre with a cafe a short distance away. We had passed another pub on route and asked if their kitchen was open - they too shut their kitchen at 2.00 pm - but agreed to key it open until we arrived. This pub was brilliant and they knew straightaway that we'd been victims of the Wheatsheafs brand of hospitality. My advice is don't go there - why pubs with such poor customer service carry on in this way is astonishing. If a public an dislikes customers and children so much maybe they're in the wrong business. Looking for a welcoming family friendly pub - then give The Wheatsheaf a wide berth.

Wandered up to this pub from the Wickham Festival, a group of 10 including children in ~30 deg arriving ~1.50. We pulled the man serving away from his newspaper puzzles, he wasn’t impressed. We explained we were just ahead of the rest of the party and the barman (possibly landlord?) said “well, they had better get here within the next 2 minutes”. We put in an order for 6 of the party, the barman huffed and faffed quite a lot and wouldn’t split the bill between the two families and HAD NOT given the order to the kitchen OR taken payment when the remaining members of the party arrived. He said “She won’t like this” quite a lot and went to check again with the kitchen. He returned to say that the kitchen would take the order we still hadn’t paid for, but not any further.

If you remember the 80s then you will have no trouble recalling the 'you made me miss' scene in the pub from American Werewolf- well, here it is! Also, if you liked arcade games, the 80s classic could well represent the running of the gauntlet that you have to undertake to get from the car park to the pub in the first place! If you survive this, then you are greeted with a selection of well-kept English ales, but- being careful not to enjoy yourself too much- most of the ales are well under the 4.5% mark...if you are from Belgium or the US- you might want to give this a miss and opt for a bottle of Volvic from an omnipresent supermarket; once inside, the atmosphere is akin to that on Mars, and no doubt if you like inhaling dog hair there will be plenty of choice. No music, not even the typical British brewery ambient Howard Jones and Phil Collins CD- to it's credit, it's not a 50s megapub and so you can feel that you are part of the, albeit limited, action. Not a place to drink at (unless you are old uncle Tam from round the corner), or unless you want to capture that Hollywood moment....Liberty Valance comes to mind......stop in for a quick English ale so you can sample our dull, weak, warm beer and then make a hasty retreat to your car...if you make it alive...don't forget, we drive on the left...and everything else we do seems to be wrong too...

Great, well kept beers dispensed straight from the casks behind the bar. Very reasonably priced (find me a pub in the area that's cheaper). Great landlord and staff. Fabulous home cooked food (no starters or pudding but if you are still hungry after your meal, I would be very surprised and you could always top up with another beer). Friendly locals and you can bring you dog in. Garden at the back, music every Saturday. BBQs in the summer at weekends. Beer festival once a year.

In all honesty this is a working/retired mens' local and it is terrific. My wife and I stopped for lunch and it is a bit like walking into another era with the beer barrells behind the bar and the locals sitting at the bar with their pints. I'm sure when we walked in everybody looked at us however the barman quickly asked what we would like to drink and an elderly couple at a table said they were going shortly and we could take their seats. The food was straight forward and although we only had ploughmans' (cheddar and rare beef) they were excellent and another time i'd order one of the tempting hot dishes. The flower pots bitter was very well kept and if I hadn't of being driving i'd have had a second pint. As we left one of the regulars actually said good bye...i'm looking forward to being in this part of the world again and revisiting this super establishment.

A proper English pub , that serves great beer straight out the barrel from behind the bar. Lunchtimes there is food that is all freshly cooked , none of that microwave stuff served up in the chain pubs. If you want the cajun chicken be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes. ,,,Although the menu is not to large you will spend some time trying to decide what to eat as it is all well prepared and great value. Look behind the bar, see the Flowerpots selection of Ale and Cider's and tell me this is not a real pub. Great place to chill and have a few pints, ciders or wine and watch a bit o' sport or simply read the paper. Food is not the important item here. Pub's own dogs entertain endlessly and amuse, this is a dog friendly pub and should stay so. Be careful with any young children arriving and leaving this place though because it is directly on a fast road. Watch out for passing traffic if crossing to the car park.

It's good to see a pub such as the Wheatsheaf thriving in times where corporate blandness is so often the standard. The welcome is genuinely warm, the tempting range of gravity fed real ales are sourced from local microbreweries and the simple lunchtime menu menu is described on blackboards in the two bars. Portions are generous and good value...however, best to turn up promptly as the popular choices do go quickly.

lovely pub but my only complaint is that legaly when a drink has been served that drink must be supplied to the recipient no matter what the time is and in the case of my visit i bought a drink near closing time and as soon as I bought that drink it was taken of me which is not just illegal but also unfair so for this reason I can not recommend this establishment at all

£26.50 for a day pass, although asked for £30 which includes donation. Our party was made up of 5 adults - we didn’t donate. To put into context, my husband and I have been members of Marwell in our days before our children. It holds a special place in our hearts. We moved away but always managed to make at least 2 visits a year as the children grew up & still do - the kids are now into their 20’s and often visit with us. Sadly the experience over the last 10 -15 years has progressively gotten worse. Every time we go we hope it will be better. Marwell was always at the forefront of conservation and education & had an extremely successful breeding program for the rhinos and giraffes. Much money has been spent on enclosures that didn’t work, the snow leopards, the cheeta, the walkway over the persian leopard, now cloud leopard, the new tropical house, the gibbon enclosure, kids play areas. Now it is a shell. Few animals, lots of paddocks full of weeds, & plastic bottles & little or no information. The annual membership is a steal but place feels more of a kiddies play area than a serious home for conservation and education. It’s expensive and disappointing. Bit on context - The Cotswold Wildlife Park is £19 for an adult. A much smaller facility but full of animals and information & staff happy to help and answer questions.

This pub proclaim on their very own website to be a ‘friendly local pub’, ‘families welcome’, ‘friendly publicans’, ‘where community comes together’, ‘you’ll feel part of the family’…which is quite frankly outrageous given our two experiences here. On the first occasion my little boy became upset in the pub (over something i cant remember- but hes 4, so standard 4yo behaviour which lasted only a minute or two). And when i came back in from the garden, I heard them laughing and one member of staff said ‘hes a brat, and his mother just cant control him which isnt my problem’. Then (heaven knows why we went back) - my friends little boy cut his cheek on the side of a bench in the beer garden - they refused to give us any first aid or call a taxi for A&E, let alone any empathy or basic duty of care. When my husband challenged the manager (Ade) and he said to us ‘if i had my way id make this an adults only pub so we dont have to deal with these nightmare kids’. I could not believe how cruel and uncaring the people working here could be. A little boy had hurt himself and they couldn’t have cared less- but more than that- they were hostile, unhelpful and offensive about the whole thing. Despite it being our local, we have not returned- and we will not be.

Came in for some drinks with friends- the women wouldn’t leave us alone the whole night. Watched us on the CCTV when we weren’t doing anything wrong and asked us to leave when we had bought lots of drinks. The food is sub par and the drinks extortionate . There are so many better pubs in Winchester so go to them.

My wife and I found ourselves at the Cricketers Inn having tried a couple of closer pubs which had stopped serving food at 3pm (totally understandable but we had a lot on and we're running late and hungry!). We're glad we did. We received a warm welcome and a great lunch. 2 courses and some drinks came to just under £50 which I'm not going complain about. The food came out nice and quick, fresh and roasting hot. It was delicious, hats off to the chef. My wife had a chicken burger and I had a stir fry, both went down well. I'd recommend a visit, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't have the kids with us as the play area looked like it would have kept them occupied! Well done.
