The Wharfe of Knaresborough in Harrogate

I normally call in here on a Friday teatime, it used to be the best chippy in knaresborough.i called in last night, disaster! Confirming earlier reviews. Had to wait for ages for chips to be cooked, the main fryer kept saying “30” seconds? No white protective clothing! It appeared to be understaffed. The medium fish was definitely a small fish for the same price £7.90 smaller boxes, soggy chips , once home the batter was undercooked and thin small piece of fish. Unfortunately the young man serving obviously not had any training, kept wiping his hair, then wrapping fish and chips, left peas on cold counter, another man in light tan dirty clothes covered in batter( but not cooking) kept coming into the frying area obviously not happy but not helping either. Worst experience of this chippy in 9 years! And I note it has just received planning permission to extend?? Please get your portions back and concentrate on providing good value fish and chips. The fish bites sign removed and children’s meals also- it appears these”chains” that take over small independent shops prefer profit to good value and service . I won’t be returning.

Just been here half a portion of watery peas cold recooked yesterday chips disgusting won’t be going again would rather travel to Bradley’s where fish and chips are fish and chips don’t waste your money here like we did very poor quality

Absolutely horrendous fish and chips. The batter wasn't cooked properly and the chips werent cooked either. Appalling prices for a rubbish meal!

I used to get my chippy tea from here before the new owners took over and although it was nice it wasn’t the same as their other chippy on Skipton Road. After reading a lot of negative posts we decided to swerve getting our food from here but one day out of convenience I went and order fish bites and chips and sausage and chips, well to say that it was good is an understatement. The fish bites were proper fish bites, 10 of them and they weren’t big they were what they should be, fish bites!! The chips were amazing, not greasy. The whole experience was top notch, and the people behind the counter especially the fryer were great, very helpful and extremely friendly. Chuffed to bits now with the Wharf Chippy, try it, you won’t be disappointed guys.

Normally love the fish & chips from here but visited this evening had a total different experience The fish was greasy & batter undercooked. Chips were also undercooked. Such a shame as seemed like good quality food that was cooked wrongly

Really disappointing the last 3 visits have gradually got worse (mainly chips), we have them fortnighly over the last year when we visit. They used to be divine and huge portions, but now the chips are like scrap ends or hard....and much smaller but the meal is disappointing now. New ownership?

We used to rate this as the best fish shop in the area, using it on a regular basis.The quality of the produce as dramatically gone down hill in the last 4 months.After today's meal I will never be using them again. What a shame.Once again today disappointed full of grease and soggy batter.Very poor quality potatoes used for the chips.Just rock hard on the outside and no potato left in the middle

This chippy used to be the best in the area, it now is the worst, small soggy portions, they won't be in business very long if they continue like this , 12 months ago they were queueing out of the door, my last two visits I was the only customer, now I know why, will not be going back unless things improve dramatically, so sad.

Simple order, fish chips scraps and curry sauce. Didn't get scraps, was asked if I wanted salt and vinegar at same time as another customer called in, that was too much for them as they didn't put salt or vinegar on. I had been recommended to go there. What a disappointment. Save your cash and go to Brakes on knaresborough Rd. Crap

Paid £2.50 for this box of chips , asked for regular got small , very disappointed. However the curry sauce was banging 👌🏼

The Wharfe used to be very good, but not any more. Prices have remained the same, but the portions have shrunk by at least a third and the food quality has gone from great to average. Unfortunately, I won't be getting fish and chips from here anymore.

From the best fish and chips for a competitive price and amazing size to a fish finger and soggy chips. If you are new owners you will not last long. I for one will not be using you again after many years of satisfaction

I have been a regular customer of The Wharfe for the past three years and been very happy with the service. Tonight the service was as good as normal but the Lite Bite meal was pathetic as the fish was tiny and at least half the size compared to last week but the price had increased. I rang the shop to complain and the girl was very polite and apologised. She said the portion had reduced in size and the shop was no longer owned by Wharfe. I expect we will be shopping elsewhere next week.

Please do not waste your hard earned money on this chippy. It has gone from a first class establishment to an absolute disastrous business model. Apparently there has been a change of ownership, and a change of supplier. Gone are the beautiful tasty and well cooked haddock of a decent size to be replaced by soggy batter and utterly tastless and small fish of indeterminate origin. Even the dog was unimpressed. I predict that most people like myself will vote with their feet, owners please take note before you go out of business, your reputation is hard earned and very easily lost. Mrs Mirams

Personally I love going in its always really friendly and cheap prices for good value the staff are all lovely and always put a smile on my face I'd definitely suggest other people go

Pretty good for an English chippie- they have pineapple fritters, potato scallops and battered cream eggs, so it's a cut above the usual. Also has a good selection of drinks

I have tried all the fish and chip shops in Knaresborough as have lived here for many years, and a few months ago I visited the wharf as my usual fish and chip shop near where I live was closed. Now I go to the wharf pretty much every week, sometimes more than once a week! we usually buy the light bite meals because my mum says she finds a regular portion too big for her - the light bite is great value. The fish and chips are satisfying exactly what you want in a proper portion of Yorkshire Fish and chips and you can have loads of scraps if that’s your thing - just perfection.😋 this place is popular – I usually go on a Friday evening and there’s a queue but totally worth the wait and just add to your appetite!!! Absolutely fabulous Fish and chips, cooked to perfection as you wait, straight out of the pan. I have been here many times, and NEVER had a badly cooked fish, OR chips., and the portions are generous. The batter on the fish is just beautiful. The staff are pleasant and very helpful, at all times, even thought they are always very busy with customers like us, who appreciate excellent Fish and chips, and value for money, which cannot be beaten anywhere near.

Heard good feedback about this chipshop thought I would give it a try. Well I am glad I did as I couldn’t fault it. The service was excellent and the fish and chips were mouth watering. Very good!!

Called in today on my break from work, must say the fish cake was absolutely beautiful and the chips were cooked to perfection. The curry sauce is a must!! Was so tasty! Will definitely be my regular chippy from now on.😁

The fish was super greasy and the chips had a gritty texture, the curry sauce was super watery honestly go elsewhere. Vile

For the second time we have bought fish and chips from here and been disappointed. The chips were gritty as well as raw, and the fish was so greasy that it leaked out the box onto our table, making it inedible. We will be choosing elsewhere going forward.

Beautiful fish but very poor chips

i have just ordered fish and chips, a fish cake, 2 portions of peas and 2 bread rolls! £17.00 in all. The fish was the smallest fish i have ever seen, that was their regular size, the fish cake was 2 pieces of batter with nothing in the middle, looks like it was made this lunch time , yet i bought it at 7.30pm! when i got back home and opened up our meal the 2 cartons of peas were curry sauce!!! I rang them back to ask what they would do, but all i got was a young girl, the one that served me, saying i’m sorry but we have been very busy!! I was the only person in the bloody place!!! They are using school kids, who don’t listen to serve customers and when it goes wrong they gust say sorry to you! Well i for one will never use this shop again, the quality of there food and service is Zero I will now be contacting food standards and reporting them, and also the Fish Fryers Association as company’s like this need making accountable. I did try to speak to the owner but some young kid said he was the manager tonight! I have given him my mobile number and ask him to get the owner to ring me! bet that does not happen!!! if you are reading this whatever you do, do not use this chip shop!!!

Best fish and chips in Knaresborough

Our fish was delicious. Freshly cooked, piping hot beautiful piece of haddock , chips tho were not very pleasant and 90% went in the bin. Sorry 😞

Best fish & chips we’ve had in ages, and I’m including Whitby & Scarborough. Quality ingredients freshly cooked generous portions. Definitely the best only wish we lived nearer but certainly our ‘go to’ whenever we’re in the area. 10/10 🏆🥇

The young girl who serves us was very polite and clearly cared about the service , everything was great , food service , portions and value.

I ordered a battered burger in a bread bun . When I begun to eat it I took one bite and it was very watery/juicy but it wasn't very warm, so I put my finger in the middle of the burger and it was cold in the middle , it was under cooked . I didn't have time to take it back . But I will never buy that again . I thought it was quick when I ordered it .they must have dipped a frozen burger in batter then cooked it. But obviously the batter will cook before the burger can. Obviously untained staff . Don't buy from chain Lane chiipy .

Fish and chips takeaway on Chain Lane in Knaresborough. We had a 'special fish' and one portion of chips with curry sauce, to share between two us (£11.60). The fish was massive and the portion was more than enough for two of us. The fish batter was light and crispy. The curry sauce wasn't our favourite (we prefer the spicier ones). Overall, we liked it and would definitely recommend.

popped in for a lightly battered fish butty. fish was soggy and undercooked not what i expect. having used to run a fish and chip shop myself makes me wonder why do people find it so hard to please customers! disappointing will not be returning.

Unfortunately this was my first and likely last time coming as the food was extremely greasy, the chips were under cooked, and fish tasted off. Overall its just another Drakes which is a shame

Great onion rings, chicken, chips, curry, and sausage. Mushy peas are ok, seem like mushed canned peas.

Came in Tuesday tea time and so glad I did, the service was incredible very friendly staff. Cooked fresh but didn't have to wait long. They tasted phenomenal there wasn't a scrap left, the whole family extremely happy 😊

I visited The wharfe Knaresborough with my 3 children yesterday. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding and made it exciting for my children, especially the lolly with my childrens fish and chips,. Will definitely be returning

Moved back to knaresborough after spending 11 years away. As a kid drakes was always my go to place. I heard great things about this chippy. Went last night and wasn't disappointed. Some of the best fish and chips I've had. Big portions and probably the best curry sauce I've had. Will be making this my new local. Fish was thick and flakey. Very impressed.

Piping hot gorgeous chips. Just how they should be, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Reasonably priced too.

Popped in here for Friday lunch - fish freshly cooked with tonnes of scraps to add. No complaints at all - the "light bite" of small fish and chips, peas and gravy or curry sauce at 4.25 was a good deal as it was still a big enough meal for lunch. The peas portion was the same as a regular peas portion for example.

Called for a quick lunch. Kids meal was huge and great value, chips fresh and tasty. Staff excellent.

My partner and I just had fish chips and mushy peas from the Wharfe Knaresborough, the fish was beautiful thick flaky and very tasty the batter is very nice also, the best my partner said! he loves scraps on his. The chips were also very nice and everything was cooked perfectly. Well done we really enjoyed.

Don’t normally do reviews but was so pleased with overall experience called in on spur of moment was driving by ( normally use one near to where I live ) Selection of food was great but stuck to traditional fish , chips and mushy peas,Was not disappointed beautiful fish , well cooked chips and good portion of peas 10 out or 10. Served by an older lady think her name was Jane, very friendly, chatty and polite . Overall great place will be calling again

The fish and chips are lovely. But for some reason, one staff member gives out only tiny portions of chips, I have been unucky enough to get this a fews times now only realising when I get home. I once counted out 8 chips, this is ridiculous and stingy, not worth the price of paying for chips when you hardly get any. I go elsewhere now if I'm hungry.

There was only one person in as I passed so thought I’d quickly grab a portion of chips and curry sauce. No such luck. Gave my order as I arrived and paid and it took 20 minutes wait and they weren’t waiting for chips to be cooked either as they were ready. Before I got served someone came in to collect an order that wasn’t ready. They were served so slowly they were running out of lunchtime (they said they only get 30 minutes but the server didn’t get any quicker). I eventually got served and when I got home the curry sauce was so thick I struggled to pour it and had to spoon it out in dollops. It was also really salty (probably due to being so thick). I usually only get fish from here but didn’t have time to wait so thought it would be quicker. Would have been as quick to have the fish if I’d known. Goodness knows how long it takes to get served at a busy time. If I hadn’t already paid I’d have left and made my own at home (and they would have been much nicer too as the chips were nothing to shout about). HOWEVER their fish (in the past) have been the best in town. Fingers crossed that hasn’t changed.

I was passing so popped in for fish and chips. The fish batter was really nice and covered really succulent fish. However the majority of the chips were hard, crunchy and sharp and the few that weren’t sharp and crunchy were chewy and rubbery. They tasted as if they had been pre-cooked, left to go cold then refried. They were really awful. Won’t be getting anything but fish from here if I do go back in the future.

Delicious Fish and Chips for a good price!

Not happy with my previous two trips to the wharfe as both times I have ordered 1 fish on its own and then I separate order of 1 large battered sausage with chips which they stuff all in the same box when I have tried to make it clear they are separate orders, I have also had problems with getting a simple large battered sausage and instead have been given a normal large sausage instead of a battered one, I understand it gets busy and we are still needing to follow the covid rules but when I'm paying for two separate orders I expect to get the two separate orders and for the orders to be correct, normally I wouldn't care but this has happened twice one after the other.

I would say this is definitely the best fish and chips in the town now. Nice, "meaty" fish, a good amount of crispy batter, lovely, fluffy chips... All cooked freshly and perfectly. Go there, any day and it's the same....

We are lucky that most of the takeaway fish shops in Knaresborough do good fish and chips, but those from The Wharfe ( formerly Chain Lane Fisheries) are outstanding. The chips are cooked to perfection and the fish is just lovely, thick white fish and delicious crispy batter. The portions are very generous. There is a good selection of other items on the menu too.The staff are efficient and always cheerful. In my opinion this is the best fish shop in Knaresborough.

My first visit to this chippy at lunchtime today and certainly will not be my last. Best fish and chips I've had in a long time. Fish freshly cooked to order, light crispy batter and absolutely huge. Chips very good too and all piping hot. Will be recommending my new find with pleasure.

Best fish and chips iv had for a long long time the fish was white and in 1 piece not bits put together and large was pleasantly surprised price for quality was very good will buy again x

PEAS SIR CAN I HAVE SOME MORE The mushy peas were so watery it was more like a pea juice you could drink it with a straw! - I wish this gave the option to upload a photo. The fish and chips themselves were ok although the portions were smaller than other chips shops in the area. I personally think there is better fish & chip shops locally.
