Searching for somewhere for lunch that will accommodate 4 adults, 2 children, a baby, a pram and 2 dogs is not easy in Whitehaven so we were delighted to find this place! The welcome was second to none, the service was friendly and helpful. Most importantly the food was delicious. We all ate everything and I took some home made bread and butter pudding home. It was the best I’ve ever tasted!

Mid afternoon meal, meant to have a snack but the atmosphere and ambiance persuaded us to stay. Fabulous food, someone here certainly knows how to cook ! This cafe looks very inviting. Upon arrival, it looked warm, cosy and very modern so we tried here for lunch but left very disappointed. The customer service is lovely and the location is prime in the heart of Whitehaven but the limited menu and poor quality of food left us unsatisfied. We had ‘Salmon with scrambled eggs on toast’ & ‘Jacket Potato with Cheese & Beans’, sounds nice right? However, the salmon was salty and not particularly tasty with eggs done in the microwave and on soggy bread. The Jacket was minute with a side salad of just a few leaves. Both dishes had a slice of pineapple, mango and pomegranate seeds too?! Very confusing and both dishes lacked flavour. Bitterly disappointed in our visit today. In a town of such competition with tourism and especially for those seeking ‘staycations’ in the UK, the cafe has to ‘up its game’ otherwise they will fall very quickly behind the others.

We parked up just outside this café, needing both refreshment and a toilet break. The party consisted of my 85 year old mother myself and wife, and my sister and her husband - all of us in our sixties. We loved the décor of the place, and it looked and was immaculate. It looked much like a posh sitting room in a funky stately home. We were welcomed by a smiling friendly member of staff, who was attentive throughout our short stay. We had our drink, some cake (peppermint crunch, which is recommended), and then availed ourselves of the toilet facilities. This was a great place for a break before driving the hour along the coast to our holiday village. We would certainly recommend this café, and would pop in again if we were ever in Whitehaven

Me and my partner came in for some lunch both had sandwiches. Place was slightly unkempt, bits of food on the floor and the table needed to be cleaned. When the drinks arrived my partners coke glass had coffee powder in, when asked to change the glass the waiter blamed someone else and apologised, however he should have checked before bring the glass over in the first place. Food arrived and for a sandwich that was £7 it was very bland and came with a very small side salad which was brown around the edges. Very disappointed with the food as the building is stunning but the food does not reflect that.

Having dropped into Whitehaven today , weather was really poor and raining and it was hard to find somewhere to have a coffee undercover as we had a dog , but we hit jackpot when we came across “The Westminster cafe “ outside seating under cover and dry . We was actually greeted by the owner as we was getting ready to take a seat and we was invited inside as it was dog friendly and nice and warm. The staff was so friendly and even made a fuss of Barney our dog , they giving him treats and offered water . The highlight for us was the coffee and the ambience, great surroundings and coffee to die for . Very very reasonable as only about a fiver for 2 coffees .... well worth a visit and if I’m honest I will definitely be calling back for more even if I’m only passing Whitehaven .

The waitress was very pleasant and did not rush us to order even though the cafe was fairly full. We ordered soup and a sandwich to share and a pot of tea for two. The vegetable soup which my husband ate was thick, very tasty and served with a large slice of fresh crusty bread. Popped in for breakfast - my muffin and avocado was priced at £7.50 as was my partners cooked breakfast. For this price we were expecting big things! I was gobsmacked when my partners breakfast arrived: one sausage, a handful of mushrooms, one tomato, one slice of toast, a minuscule rasher of bacon and a piece of black pudding no bigger than my thumb. He had it ate in 60 seconds! My muffin was soggy and the avocado was rock hard, not ripe at all. I couldn't eat it. And again, the portion was very small. The drinks were disappointing too - I ordered a hot chocolate as it sounded lovely on the menu but it was just from a drinks machine as was my partners latte which was also supposed to be topped with chocolate. All in all, really over priced for the quality and amount you receive. Other cafes in the area offer twice as much for half the price. Definitely won't be returning.

Ate with my son and daughter, panini stuffed with bacon and chicken, they really enjoyed it, home made Veg soup was really nice, accompanied by a really nice ham open sand which, on nice brown bread, think it was home made, overall really nice. Combine this with a good ambience, and love the photographs that adorn the entire cafe, including the rest rooms. I am some one who really likes animals, however not when they (dog) are allowed to sit up at the table, with paws on the table itself and clearly a practice accepted by the owner. I know I will probably be in the minority here, it's a personal view, which for me tainted the overall experience, which makes me question the overall hygiene approach.

Unfortunately two people in our party don't like hot buttered goods so couldn't eat them. The butter should be in pats on the side so people have the choice. The other thing was that the music was blasting out of the stereo, I think it may have been Elvis. We were trying to talk, unsuccessfully. The music should be muted and in the background to create an ambiance. Not everyone likes rock n roll. I was embarrassed by this experience as I'd recommended it after visiting about 5 years ago. The preparation of the food does take a little time but when you take into consideration that almost all the food and drinks are prepared to order this is understandable. I would recommend the Westminster Cafe to anyone.

Thought we would try this place out again after our last awful experience. Just had a coffee. All in the cup at least this time. No change to the attitude. Reading other reviews which are sometimes positive it feels like your face has to click to be accepted. Lots of warmth from the waiter / owner to a group of ladies....... Not shared with us.... Again. I guess I am not allowed to suggest the owner prefers chatting up his female clientele...... So I won't suggest that. Won't go there any more. Had two tries and both unpleasant. No responses to the postings suggests owner doesn't care a great deal about his customers being happy. If you are looking for a cuppa or light meal in Whitehaven try the other places with better reviews.

Met with friends here for a get together lunch. Patron is patronizing and rude!! We would not ever repeat this experience. Hospitality is completely lacking ... a spell in charm school would benefit the owner. Food is disappointing and overpriced in the extreme. Menu does not correctly list ingredients used in meals. This is important for special dietary needs! Why would people come here again??

We made the mistake of going to this café for lunch. We had "specials" off the board - Tuna Mayo Panini with salad. Two coffees. The waiter/owner had attitude. Had an air of superiority and disinterest which immediately put us on edge. (Maybe we were not smartly dressed enough that day!)We ordered coffee....which took ages as I think he forgot as he was too busy chatting with other customers. When the coffee arrived it was good - except the coffee he had slopped into my saucer which did not seem to concern him.Again, slowly, the food arrived.A very odd looking Panini!! Looked more like a sesame bun!Very tiny salad, and a tiny dish of dressing. We ate the food despite the onion which was not on the menu. It was mediocre. Having asked for a Panini it was a great disappointment.I went to get the bill....a STAGGERING 19.95!!!!Two coffees, two tuna mayo buns and a tiny salad! We were so sure there was a mistake we went back in to check the price of the food.Without a single word, the " waiter" thrust a till receipt at us to prove we were indeed being charged excessively for mediocre food and poor service. Not a word of concern.......but the lack of words spoke volumes to us.If you want to go to a place that is slightly pretentious, be served by someone with a high-handed manner, and be charged London prices for food and drinks served without care - this is for you.Maybe the "Specials" board which was unpriced meant special prices!Otherwise Whitehaven has much much better to offer at around half the price.

Great food, atmosphere, music and waiters. Highly recommend. A lovely blonde young waitress made us feel so special and made it very aware that our custom was valid

I haven't been in here for a wile but unfortunately the place was not as lovely as it used to be, the menu has been maid smaller and not as appealing, I always used to have the bagel with maple syrup and bacon it's no longer on the menu! Boy has this place changed! The staff were friendly enough but the food was awful, the salad with the sandwich was old and brown round the edges, the toasted tea cake was burned to a crisp can not believe they actually served it! The glass we had our drinks in were dirty very very disappointing will not be going back! It used to be a lovely place to eat not really sure why it's gone down hill as seems to still have same staff and owners? Very poor quality for the price. It used to be a place that you could tell the person making the food really took pride in what they served it always looked and tasted impressive that's defiantly NOT the case now real shame!

Walked past this place many times without noticing. My bf mentioned it as it has "westminster" in the name. Thought we'd give it a try. On entering, the place seemed busy but very cluttered. The walls were covered in so many colours and pictures that it was hard to feel comfortable. When getting a table, we looked at the menu. To my surprise, it was all very expensive (as we didn't have alot of money to spend). We ordered the cheapest we could find. I ordered a jacket potato with cheese. It wasn't appealing. Had a milkshake but it was very small. Drank all my milkshake and ate as musch as I could with my jacket potato. Service was very poor that no one took any notice of us. The only thing I liked was the milkshake and the glass it came in. But even then, it seemed quite overly priced. I would not go back again, but if you're someone with no budget. Then what the hell, you can waste your money on what you like.

The owner has an attitude problem and would rather eat and drink in there himself than serve a customer. The prices are rediculous for what you get. When we went it was £8.50 for a salad! The other staff were pleasant. But I would advise anyone not to eat here. It's a rip off and there are other better places to eat in Whitehaven. I will never go again.

We always have lunch here when visiting Whitehaven (even if there were other comparable choices in the town, we would still come here!) the food is always good & well presented, service (by the handsome waiter) attentive. Prices reasonable & good choice of daily specials.

With all the other food places in Whitehaven being shabby and out dated, the Westminster is a lovely setting, well designed & beautiful home made food. The staff were very friendly & made us feel welcomed in our visit. Highly recommend.

Visited the cafe with my father and partner. Upon walking in the place was busy which is usually a good sign. A female in a suit with zero customer service skills took our order. Upon the same female coming over with our drinks I saw that my cup was dirty and cracked around the rim. I asked for another cup to which the female in a suit replied; 'what's wrong with it?' I explained what was wrong with it to which the reply was; 'its not dirty, that's where it's been lying on the coffee machine'. I stated that regardless, I wanted a different cup, reply; sorry? Ill get that for you now? Nope. The female in the suit walked away shouting; 'it isn't dirty!'. Thus led the elderly couple sat on the table next to us to comment how rude the female was!The food arrived two minutes after this. My order had half the ingredients missing making it nothing more than an overpriced prawn bap (on tesco blue stripe bread past its best) at £8.50!!!!!!!!!!!!We consumed only half the 'food' placed before us, paid up and left. The only assets that this place had was the cook who's wisely leaving to start her own business!Oh, and the arrogant woman in the suit? I've been told she is the owner!!! Get some interpersonal skills!

This review is very late. Apolgies. I took a friend to this pleasant looking cafe as a treat. We had "organc leek soup" we simply could not eat. The good news is it had not been made on the premises , meaning not home made. The service was indifferent. We ate at 1 pm on a week day and the cafe was nearly empty. This is not the first time I have been disappointed. Such a shame as the location and style of the cafe reminds me of a London venue . Did we complain ??Honestly no because our half full bowls of soup were never cleared from our table through our entire visit. Hence my coomens about the service. Sorry :(

Needing a morning coffee, we found this cafe by chance. And we were glad we did. It's a welcoming quirky place with walls decorated in arty pictures of models posing with coffee cups and even in a bowl of spaghetti. The service was friendly, the sofas comfortable and the coffee was good. So we came back a couple of hours later for lunch. The homemade lentil and bacon soup was excellent and the freshly prepared sandwiches good. The selection of cakes looked appealing too. This is just the sort of independent cafe every town needs, where you get good food and friendly service from people who care about what they do. Next time I'm in Whitehaven, this is where I will head for lunch.

This place is unreal! Honestly you could not write how bad it is, it’s that bad you just have to laugh. There is absolutely no organisation at all. There were 3 waiting on members of staff, none of which had a clue. They wandered around aimlessly with food & drinks with absolutely no idea what table they were for. They were in & out of the kitchen with the same plates of food, it was just bizarre. One table, while we were there, were given their mains at the same time as their starters! We had to ask for our table to be cleared, if you asked for anything it took them at least 20 minutes. I have never seen such poor service. Food was ok, nothing special. The only reason to return would be the comedy value, you cannot believe your eyes!

Want to be able to give it more stars :/ Nice to have a chip shop in such a small village. Easy to find, nice young woman behind the counter. As she was cooking the fish, I thought - hmm- should be now.... or now... or now. Well, so probably was, so a bit overcooked. Chips were good (glad I saw her salt/vinegar an order or 2 before mine so I could say 'no, thank you' to waaaay too much salt. Got an order of cold slaw. Ok - was a serving of mayo with some cabbage in it. Hope they consider some adjustments! Then would recommend.

Shockingly dirty for a place serving food. Chairs an absolute disgrace. Dirty, stained, marked. I'm amazed environmental health hasn't been in and told them to get them cleaned. If it was only one I could have attempted to make some sort of excuse. But it wasn't. A group of us had gone for lunch but we all decided to find somewhere else. I'm honest baffled how Dixons are getting away with it? The Terrace cafe in Workington put this place to shame. I'm amazed people were eating there. We wouldn't go back. Pictures enclosed. Zoom in guys. Truly mehhhh 🙈🤮

I’ve been here a number of times and I have enjoyed it every time. The pub is set in beautiful surroundings. The atmosphere is happy and relaxed as it’s full of likeminded outdoorsy types. The food is tasty and has good portion sizes.
