The West Gate Public House in Bath and North East Somerset

Both nights we visited this pub (Wednesday and Thursday) the pub was full of young students who came in droves causing a delay on bar service whilst each student bought themselves only a drink and had their ID checked. They then visited a room upstairs where other students were until that is the pub managers went up and cleared them out! However, about 30 minutes later another group of students came and the whole process started again. If I want to go for a drink in Bath next time I will go to a proper pub and one that is not a kindergarten!

Very disappointed with my hot drink which was luke warm. I will not be visiting The West Gate again.

Without a doubt the best pub in Bath. Actually, the best pub in the world. So much so they walked across the Atlantic Ocean like Jesus himself to hand deliver me a Westgate Wobbler as I was craving my fix whilst studying in America (thank you Bhanavi). Of course, this is quite a substantial ask on my part so I promise to return to Bath soon to make my next order a little easier for the wonderful staff. If you need a cosy pub in the heart of Bath with delicious food, a great selection of drinks to keep things exciting, warm and friendly service and all round good vibes…well this is it. I couldn’t imagine wanting to visit anywhere other than The Westgate.

Warm and very accommodating pub. Was served, very well, by Sam. Who was prompt, polite and professional. Superb music playing throughout our meal too. Highly recommended.

I never normally leave 5 star reviews. However this service was impeccable. Served by a lovely lady and man, I think their names were Abi and Vince. Extremely friendly and welcoming service, lovely drinks, and amazing food, 10/10. Will definitely return soon.

I came into the Westgate last week and had a wonderful experience. I was served by a young man called Vincent who was extremely attentive and polite; it made our experience that much better to have a lovely waiter. Atmosphere was really nice and my family and I will definitely be returning in the new year!

Had such a lovely time. Staff were welcoming and polite. It was busy but got served straight away. The manager (Lee I think) was super nice and good to chat to :) would recommend!!!

I really like this pub, but I did wait nearly an hour today for my food. I felt really bad for the girl all on her own behind the bar, she was doing her best, but really needed support. Sadly I probably won't come back again as I'm a tour guide and only have a short time in Bath, and this was too stressful today. Sadly I'll also need to stop recommending it to customers for the same reason. If there is such a long wait for food, perhaps in future you could warn people when they order.

We booked the West Gate for our office Christmas party, and we were extremely pleased with everything the staff there offered! Nathan handled the booking and our requirements re allergies and intolerances very well, which was very refreshing. Lee and his team looked after us on the night; the food was superb. Many of the group commented on the quality and taste of the premium buffet, including myself; the steak skewers were delicious! The whole process from start to finish was the most smooth we've experienced in our years of office parties! Especially as it was a busy night in the pub, a bar tab was set up and I was informed of the limits left, when I settled the bill, the service was quick and a VAT receipt was provided promptly - perfect! A great night, made possible by the staff at West Gate. Thank you all!

We came here in the summer which they were just starting their summer cocktails and today we came in for the Xmas Market and order our food online drinks arrived and we were talking to the bar man and told him our amazing experience at this pub, great bar staff and great food.

Centrally located, often busy but service a little slow

Stayed in Bath for two days and had lunch at The west gate on both days. It was friendly , clean and food was served promptly

Awful waited 1 hour 40 mins for three meals which were Luke warm at best staff did apologise and brought a free round of drinks but this happened as we were about to leave - too little too late I’m afraid would not return

Waited over 1hr for food and came out cold no heating on when it's was very cold outside people sat in coats

I had the famous British fish and chips. Cod white meat and potatoes without any seasoning. And boiled green peas. It is served with grilled lemon. It was so oily that it was not edible. I asked the staff for salt and they gave it to me, but after adding lemon, it was just a feast. There was also something like tartar sauce. I knew British food had a reputation for not being delicious, but I never expected it to be this good. I don't know the price because it was included in the tour price, but I personally would never want to pay for a meal. The ice cream dessert was delicious. The interior and atmosphere of the restaurant was typical of a British pub.

The turkey dinner was good simple pub food with lots of meat but was spoilt by cold veg and hard roasties. Well done to the Green King menu team but they were let down by the pub kitchen staff. We debated whether to complain but decided not to and so got on with it. Decent pub TBF and dog friendly.

Me and my friend had a great time at the Westgate. Our bartender Sam was incredibly attentive and helpful and even remembered our order at a busy bar! There was live music upstairs which made a lovely atmosphere and the drinks were well priced.

I hate leaving bad reviews but this place is terrible. Avoid! We waited an hour for two sandwiches. When I went to the bar after 45 mins to ask about our food, the bar staff was very nonchalant about it and said there’s always a long wait. Had we have been told about this when we ordered we would have gone someone else. They radioed the kitchen to ask where our food was and they said “2 minutes”. The food arrived fifteen minutes later. When my steak sandwich turned up, I had to send it back as it had very little steak in it, one sandwich had tiny piece of steak in it about the size of a match box! The second turned up and if this is what this particular Greene King pub thinks is acceptable for £10.50 no wonder the pub trade is in crisis! (The photos are the sandwich they brought be back out after apologising). There was hardly any steak in it and it looked and tasted like the trimmings from an old roast dinner. The steak dry and tough and not pink as I’d order. The bread was stale and look as though someone has already had a go at eating it! I’m assuming I annoyed the chef for sending my food back! The couple next to us had a similar experience. There roast dinners turned up stone cold. They were offered a free drink rather than replacing the food as the kitchen was very busy! The toilets were an absolute disgrace. Dirty, damaged and very smelly. The men’s toilet were absolutely filthy, urine all over the floor, soiled and damaged plasterboard walls and panelling. My wife used the ladies toilet and said it was worse than a public toilet. It clearly hadn’t been properly cleaned in a long while as there was mould! Sadly we used toilet after our meal. If this is what the public facing areas are like, I dread to think what the rear of house and kitchen are like! Shocking service, shocking food quality. Pretty run down pub. We used to be loyal Greene King customers, genuinely I have to question this! £35 for two drinks and a two crap sandwiches! Avoid! Edit: The Manager telephoned me to apologise. I didn’t add on my original review that we received a full refund.

We where out as family one of our party ordered a starter and a toastie his starter came in good time as did the mains that the rest of us ordered. Problem was his toastie took a hour to arrive we had all finished our mains when my wife went to the bar and asked how long it would take as she had ordered a dessert. To which she was told that she could have a refund. We didn’t want a refund the server apologised for the delay but that’s not the point it was the fact that it took a hour for a toastie to arrive

We picked this place because it was close to the hotel but it really is a little gem of a place! Staff are really attentive and happy to help in any way. Not bad access for walkers, and the food is plenty and tasty

Just had the roast chicken and it was delicious. Had everything you want in a roast. Amazing Yorkshire and gravy and such great value. Alex our waiter was so charming and helpful that it made our whole experience even better.

We both ordered the flat iron steak. Came cold and tasteless. £17.75 each. Sent it back and got a refund. Very helpful staff but the food was awful. To be fair we have had a good steak at a Greene King place before but this was disappointing.

Burger doesn’t have enough salad and vegetables and tastes like a giant piece of meat with cheese and bacon. The whole place is run down and just does not look nice. Just go to McDonalds instead for better food and atmosphere.

I came in on Sunday for some drinks and poker and had a really good time. The pub is spacious and pretty and got loads of taps to choose from. Special mention to Abi that was working behind the bar then, super friendly polite and nice!! Definitely recommend

Unfortunately the food is the reason we came into the pub, and it was extremely disappointing :/ The staff was great and the atmosphere was nice, so I would recommend going in strictly for drinks. We both got the cheddar and bacon burgers, and I am so sorry to say but this was one of the worst burgers I have had out at a pub or restaurant. It was so so dry that even massive amounts of ketchup couldn’t save it, and on top of that, mine was extremely burnt/charred on the bottom and I didn’t want to finish it. Tasted like something your grandad grills on the barbecue and burns but you eat it anyways :(

Amazing cider selection and the Lilly’s mango was highly recommended and did not disappoint. Lovely atmosphere over the weekend helped by the bar staff in particular Abi and Lauren.

Maybe it was just ‘one of those days’ Disappointing, although I accept that not every establishment serves Earl Grey tea. However, I’m astonished that this pub didn’t serve decaffeinated coffee either. Thankfully (?) water was available. The meal: I was hungry so I ate the cardboard masquerading as a toastie. I have no idea who in my group complained on my behalf which resulted in me being offered a refund. As I’d eaten it, I declined. It seems Greene King are going through difficult times.

Food was fine. Restaurant was clean and comfy. Had to go downstairs to order food as the bar upstairs wasn't open/manned, then realised if you have the green king app you could order via that

Staff were friendly but the evening Sunday roast was only luke warm. We sent it back to be be heated up and it came back dry and tough. I suspect it was the left overs from lunch. Beer was cold and good.

After a rather long travel day to Bath we happened upon the West Gate Pub (which is part of the Greene King group) when we were doing a walkabout in town. It is a great place to drop in for a pint or two. The service here is great!. Cheers!

We had our wedding reception here and also my 60th. The staff are very thought, attentive and listening to our needs. We had the whole of the downstairs and was arranged how we wanted it. Communication is very good. We were able to talk to them throughout the day. The prices are fair. Food delicious. They never let us down. As this was their venue, I would highly recommend The Westgate for any functions. Nathan and your team you did us proud.

Very helpful and polite staff, followed instructions for food requirements and changes to items on menu we wanted, comfortable pleasant pub, food was awesome, well cooked, very tasty and enjoyable, will be going back again tonight for a meal, only disappointment was no Flint Eye lager as they’d sold out, but Peroni went down just as well. Woukd recommend this pub five stars!

Food was good but cold. The service was slow and some obvious needs like cleaning tables when customers sat down never happened or was very delayed.

Awful. Went in for a pint. 3 staff about. All could see there were us and 3 other customers waiting at the bar. No acknowledgement, eye contact or offer to find someone to serve at the bar. We left and went to the Grape down the road which was nicer anyway. First time I've been moved to review somewhere

Just popped in for a few Guiness. Few students are there due to the start of a new term. Guiness was fair. Down stairs gents toilets require some work, and the stairs are quite steep.

£3.55 for half a pint of draft coke is outrageous; my friend's cider was cheaper! At that price I'd have at least expected clean toilets and loo roll. Despite pointing out the lack of loo roll to the staff, it was still lacking an hour later. The bar upstairs wasn't open on a Saturday night, yet it was loaded with dirty glasses. Pretty grim place overall unfortunately.
