A friend and I treated ourselves and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea, the sandwiches were delicious and extremely fresh, the jam and cream scones and cake selection was very tasty and so much to choose from, we couldn't eat it all and were offered doggy bags to take home, we enjoyed it so much we are returning later this month!

Having eaten here on half a dozen occasions, we where looking forward to lunch at this restaurant. Having changed chefs since our last visit, we were hopeful that they could find a replacement of similar calibre? firstly never presume, this was the worst meal I can ever remember. The Sea trout with tarragon is still evident on my taste buds 24 hour later. To cook with fish and tarragon takes great skill, non here to show. However every good amateur cooks can master a Sunday lunch, not here overcooked meat , poorly cooked vegetables and the Yorkshire puds could have caused injury. This was a shocking meal and the management should be looking hard to replace this kitchen brigade quickly

My wife was recovering from surgery, so I took her and my son for lunch at the Wentworth Restaurant on Sunday 21st January 2018. The standard for lunch appeared to be set when the young woman behind the bar had no idea whether they had the ingredients to make a Bloody Mary. What she really meant was that she had no idea how to make a Bloody Mary! So, it took an age to be served with a drink. The wine list also reflected a serious drop in standards; the page entitled “Red – French” had only one red Bordeaux (a poor Bordeaux Supérieur), the rest were all burgundies, although the web site proclaims at least three red Bordeaux wines with a further three (Ch Talbot) on the Classics page. The restaurant wine list did not have a Classics page at all. At the bottom of the page entitled “Red – Italy and Spain” my wife noticed a Ch Talbot 1996 at £175, why it was on the Italy & Spain page the Good Lord himself only knows!. I asked if the wine had been well kept and was at a suitable temperature. I was given a positive response on both counts. When the wine arrived, the bottle was certainly at a good temperature and I asked for it to be decanted. This was done, out of my sight, and the decanter returned with the wine. The wine was very good, but the decanting and / or the handling from cellar to table was done so badly that all the sediment was left in suspension, thus spoiling an excellent wine. See picture. The staff obviously have no idea how to handle a good wine. The food arrived in due course; my wife had the Beets & Blue Cheese whilst my son and I had the smoked salmon. All good. For mains, my wife had the cod, whilst my son had the roast beef and I had the roast pork. The quality of the ingredients was very good, but the vegetables were hard and undercooked – not al dente, but hard! The temperature was just about tepid, certainly nowhere near hot. We asked for extra gravy and were told that it would take 8 - 10 minutes as they had run out of gravy and the chef would make some more; even after waiting for that period we had to remind the staff again about bringing the gravy. Puddings didn’t provide any recovery for a poor meal. We all decided upon the Sticky Toffee Pudding. What a let-down! My son, who has spent 20 years in the hospitality business, stated that, in his opinion, the puddings were bought in from an external source such as Brakes and were not baked fresh in the restaurant kitchen. He may be right; they were certainly dry, heavy and lacking in flavour. The dirty glasses from our bar drinks were still on our table at the end of lunch, no one had thought to remove them throughout the entire meal. This tells me that service is lacking in professionalism. Very poor – no one seems to care. Notable by its absence throughout the lunch service was any person in authority, the team lacked any mature leadership and it showed rather badly. Standards have fallen in this hotel; food quality and service quality need to be better if this is to be the standard bearer of Yorkshire’s Food Capital. When James Martin was involved the standard of food and service were better than they are presently. The Talbot needs to up its game or business decline will surely follow. There is a distinct lack of coordination between the web site and the reality. The web site raises an expectation which the hotel fails to deliver. This is disingenuous and not the practice of a business with integrity. The wine list on the web site is greatly at variance with the reality. The web site also claims that on Sunday Lunch - “Our favourite local pianist will provide the atmosphere with gentle music playing in the background” – no pianist! There were, however, two saving graces in the whole experience; the Talbot is an attractive, delightful and tranquil hotel of distinction, which is much loved by the people of Malton and its environs and the young lady who looked after us for most of the lunch – Molly – did so with charm, grace and quiet efficiency.

We booked for Sunday lunch, a choice of 2 courses for £17.95 or 3 courses for £24.95 (which we though was exceptional value) after being given a voucher as a gift from family. We chose to try 3 courses and we absolutely loved it! The food was excellent. Starters were delicious followed by melt in the mouth roast beef and the nicest roast potatoes we have ever eaten anywhere. Vegetables were delicious too. Our desserts were the perfect end to our meal. All dishes were presented beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely be going back!

As a fellow dinner said to me, there's someone in the kitchen that knows how to cook! This is good quality cooking in a very pleasant restaurant in the charming Talbot hotel. We had scallops and pigeon dishes to start our a la carte meal, both were well cooked and flavoursome. It's easy for a busy kitchen to under or over cook these ingredients but in both cases they were perfectly cooked and served. Mains were chicken and pork dishes, again very nicely prepared and presented. There's a good choice of wines by the glass and the staff are pleasant and knowledgeable, a thoroughly enjoyable dinner.

As part of a deal, we were entitled to a 5 course starter menu in the Wentworth dining room. I don't really know what I was expecting but found the minimalistic portions unsatisfying. Very artistically presented and obviously time consuming to prepare, but not very much actually to eat. It was difficult to chose a wine from the extensive list to partner these esoteric dishes but my husband, as ever, found a flavoursome white rioja which didn't break the bank. Strangely we were not asked if we would like any help in chosing a suitable wine. The breakfast was good, although the toast was underdone and the small round accompanying the excellent scrambled egg was very mean and thin. But a good choice of cereals, fruit, yogurts, pastries etc to satisfy everyone.

I had booked a lunch to celebrate my wife`s birthday. The restaurant itself gave us a very positive feeling as we entered, particularly given that the piano background music was a nice touch. We opted for the roast beef main course, and all came nicely served by attentive staff. Then the disappointment occurred, namely that the meat was quite tough, somewhat undercooked, and lacked flavour - only partially rescued by the requested horseradish sauce & the salt cellar. The fact that all of the accompaniments were OK did not compensate for the centrepiece being much worse than that which I could have roasted myself at home. At the end of the meal, my bill showed a £17.99 overcharge, which thankfully I detected and was very relieved to have removed.

We have stayed at The Talbot at least 15 times over the last 4 years and the food in the restaurant has always been excellent but our most recent visit over Easter was really special. We chose the 9 course tasting menu for the Saturday night and can honestly say it is one of the best meals we have ever had, to have Dan and his chefs come out and go through each course in detail was a really nice touch. The food we had was all locally sourced and the presentation was first class, we have already booked our next visit and the tasting menu is something we can't wait to have again. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Wentworth to friends and family if you are in the area give it a try you will not be disappointed.

We arranged to meet friends for lunch on Sunday at the Wentworth Restaurant at the Talbot Hotel Malton. We arrived on time and had a drink in the bar and given lunch menus. After an hour no one had come to take our order so we reminded staff that we had not given our selection. We were quickly escorted to the Wentworth Restaurant and settled at our table. On the whole our first course was good, however we asked for water which was quickly brought and served, however none was left on the table. The main course came and was very disappointing, three of the party had ordered dry aged beef and Yorkshire pudding, however the beef in each case was very tough. There seemed to be a shortage of waiting staff and to get more water we had to go in search of a waiter. The table was partially cleared and after a mix up over the cutlery for the desert course the deserts were brought following which the table continued to be cleared! Three of the party had biscuits and cheese which was well presented however one member of our party ordered apple crumble but was told he could only have it with ice cream, he had hoped for custard, it was also the oddest apple crumble, it seemed to be stewed apples covered in a type of loose crumb. There appeared to be no supervision of waiting staff who seemed lacking in training, things tended to be dumped on the table without ceremony. This hotel purports to be an upmarket hotel offering fine dining but this was not our experience. We complained to the manager who apologised and said that far more people had turned up for lunch than they had expected! To be fair he adjusted the bill to reflect our dissatisfaction but our preference would have been excellent food and service. We opted to have coffee in the lounge and we could hardly believe that two of the coffees (cappuccinos) were cold! We suspect that they were not made traditionally but in an instant machine! We will not go to this restaurant again until we hear of reports of improvement.

We were in a party of 4 all of whom are foodies and who have eaten in many Michelin star restaurants. My husband and I have eaten in the Wentworth before when we stayed in the Talbot and we enjoyed it although the service was slow, so we recommended it to our visitors. The food was delicious so no complaints about that, but the ambience in the restaurant was dead and the service was shocking. The serving staff were young kids, clearly part-timers who were poorly trained and the maitre d' was doubling as barman in the bar so no-one was directing operations in the dining room. There was no explanation of the food served or which breads were in the basket. We had to ask 3 times for our wine which we had ordered along with the food before being taken to our table and it finally came after our main courses had been served. The wine should have been decanted as there was significant sediment in the bottle and a good restaurant should know this. Very poor for a restaurant that sets itself up as fine dining and charges prices that reflect this. We are very unlikely to be back although we live fairly near and visit Malton often.

Staff are friendly and warm, without being obsequious or over-matey. The sunny dining room is classically stylish, with equestrian prints and "Spy" cartoons, reflecting the history of the hotel. This restaurant is in the Talbot Hotel and has a lot of charm and the service is good. Myself and my girlfriend had the taster menu which was rather unusual as taster menus go, only being four courses, and in our opinion should be avoided. We started with mackerel, which was OK and then asparagus with a duck egg which was excellent. The main course was chicken which was very ordinary. The desert was strawberries. All in all a rather unexciting and unambitious taster menu. All the food was cooked well so I would suggest that the a la carte food was probably delicious. I was quite hungry at the end of the meal so ate all the biscuits in the hotel room. For both of us a very disappointing dinner.

We had eaten at the Hare in Scawton the previous night. The service was lacking in direction and became flustered (our starters were delivered to the wrong table); the knowledge of the food (provenance) and wine was limited but by normal standards it would still have been good. The main courses were both good (beef and lamb dishes) offering variations of texture and depth of flavour from slow cooking contrasting the freshness of the prime cuts. The 'recommended' side dishes were superfluous for us but we do understand Yorkshire portions. The mackerel starter was a genuine disappointment it promised apple, wasabi and seaside notes; a promise reinforced by appearance but seriously let down by an insipid delivery.

Booked this through "wowcher" under "unique places to dine" I was expecting something beautiful but it was just a bar area. We drove just over two hours and we could have had the same food in our home town. The menu the manager email to me was not the same one we was given when we got in. We was told to book way in advance and when we was there people were coming in for lunch during their shopping. The soup was ok although the waitress spilt some (but I don't mind that) I had sirloin steak but seemed to be mostly fat. My partner had fish which was covered in salt. Also the chips where drowned in salt too. Wish I didn't spend £70 on a voucher to come here as the food was only 10ish per meal. Nice for a pit stop during shopping but not a meal for couples.

We tried the scallops and goats curd for starters; the scallops were beautifully cooked and were paired well with the belly pork and black pudding combo. Main courses consisted of beef, pork and polenta; it is not necessary to order many extra sides as the portions are plentiful. The purple sprouting broccoli and wild garlic butter is a side worth mentioning- divine! The waitress was extremely friendly and accommodating (pregnancy dietary requirements) and talked through the menu with ease and experience. The only downside to the evening was the colder table service from a female restaurant manager. Other than that- a lovely evening with wonderful food. Thank you

Had roast beef followed by profiteroles and my other half had rhubarb crumble. The beef was the best I've ever had with a nice mix of vegetables all perfectly seasoned. My only disappointment was the service, the knives and forks for starters were not removed. We were not offered horseradish sauce or mustard when the dinner arrived nor even further drinks, we even poured our own water refills. Following the dessert the restaurant got extremely busy and we were kind of left. Our plates were not removed and when we managed to order coffee we waited at least 30/40 minutes for it and there were no petit fours as the menu had stated. Came here as a birthday treat – I think on a “special offer”.This is a lovely, old style, market town hotel with a fairly traditional restaurant – which was a nice change from the increasingly ubiquitous modern “bistro” stylings. It was warm, comfortable and surprisingly intimate given a large work party making up the majority of the diners. The food is less traditional and could, unhelpfully, be called “modern British”. We had different starters – scallops with belly pork black pudding and blood orange - the goats curd – both were very good. We both had the lamb main which was also spot on. All inventive, really well cooked and very tasty. Unusually we also had puddings which were equally good. The only downside was that there was not a good Spanish red on the otherwise well priced wine list – and that the white arrived after our starters, which is a pretty elementary service standard. Beyond that the service was great. We are the last of 3 friends to come here and all of us really enjoyed it.

The dining area itself is a little lacking in ambience...perhaps too brightly lit? One starter of Devilled Kidneys was nice enough with a peppery edge to it. My wife's lemon cured mackerel was warm? In my opinion the skin should have been taken off before it was cured and it should have been served cold. My main of mussels (in Ampleforth cider) was a stingy portion (should have been twice the size) and really didn't work. A simple marinere (cream , shallots & white wine) would have worked much better & some bread to 'mop up' the sauce wouldn't have gone amiss. My wife's steak was fine but again a little on the small side. All in all a bit disappointing. Sorry.

Good food, nice atmosphere and good service. Standards have remained high despite James Martin removing his association with the restaurant.

The quite formal restaurant was a comfortable size with tables well spaced. Service was very efficient and friendly . The waitress had picked up on the fact that it was my wife's birthday and the chef wrote " happy birthday" in chocolate on the dessert plate! Portions were not large if you have a big appetite but fine for us. The lobster raviolo and crab bisque was delicious as was the twice baked cheese soufflé, our starters. Mains were lamb and stone bass, equally good.

We have visited the Wentworth restaurant for Sunday lunch on many occasions and have never been disappointed. The food is beautifully presented and extremely tasty. The dining room itself has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with fresh flowers and starched white table cloths. The service is polite, friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend. Overall a super way to spend Sunday afternoon.

We popped here for lunch after a couple of hours shopping in York, it's about a half hour drive from York.. We ate in the Wentworth room, which is large sized annex to the main hotel with a glass roof, very pleasant and a great space.. I had a starter and a main and my wife had a main.. I had salmon as starter and the homemade burger as a main both were fantastic, well prepared and well presented with great flavours.. We drank a pot of coffee between us, which I have to say was one of the best pots of coffee I have had anywhere.. A nice touch was the bottle of sparkling water already on the table.. I can definitely recommend..

Stayed on a Sunday evening and ate in the restaurant. It was quite busy however the staff coped very well. Unflustered professional service and served at the right pace. Very nice setting with an elegant feel to it.The food was of a very good standard worthy of its double rosette listing. Well presented with great flavour combinations. Plenty of space between tables giving nice privacy. Cant comment on puddings as we were too full and didn't want to spoil what we had. If we were being picky, the wine list pricing is quite high. Would we recommend, Yes definitely.

My first visit to the restaurant was early last year as part of the Yorkshire Post lunchtime offer. I thought that even if I'd paid full price I would still have considered the lunch value for money so this prompted return visits. It has never failed to deliver, with delicious food, excellent service and lovely setting. I look forward to my next visit.

We stayed at the hotel and ate there on a Wednesday evening, which was quite quiet. The food was lovely, with imaginative dishes, beautifully presented. If there is a small criticism it is that those delivering the service seemed a bit edgy and slightly brusque: my strong suspicion is that they have a maitre d' or head chef who is very tough on his staff. If this is the case the hotel should look carefully at this. I very much doubt that it is the fault of the staff who actually served us!

We went in the summer and enjoyed a very good quality lunch in the restaurant. Since then they've revamped the eating areas and menus (see their website 'Talbot Hotel'). We liked the building and its setting also. Conveniently located for Castle Howard.

I brought my husband here for an anniversary treat for Sunday lunch, as we'd had a lovely stay in the hotel last year with a fantastic meal. The Sunday lunch was delicious, gorgeous roast sirloin cooked to our requirements, lovely roast potatoes and an amazing Yorkshire pudding (one if the best ever!). My only criticism about the food was that I would have liked more gravy (but there was no opportunity to ask for more as we were repeatedly neglected by waiting staff). Throughout the whole meal the service was pretty dire. We were never offered a drinks menu (neither of us were drinking alcohol but they wouldn't have known this, and I still would have liked to see the soft drinks menu), also we were never once offered more drinks through the course of the meal. Then once we had finished our mains we seemed to be forgotten about and it took about 30min before anyone even offered us dessert menus, and about another 20min for them to take our orders! Nearly an hour between main and dessert (which incidentally was the highlight) meant there was no chance we were risking coffee to follow. Plus we were kept waiting again to ask for the bill - there were literally no staff setting foot in the restaurant for more than 15 min - in the end I asked at the hotel reception for the bill, she went and got someone over straight away but there was no apology for the long wait. I tipped out of habit but not sure the serving staff deserved this. A shame that the dreadful service put a bit of a dampener on what was otherwise a lovely anniversary meal.

The service was not good. We were not asked if we would like a drink. We were give the Sunday Lunch menu and then the waitress came to take our order we had to ask for a drinks menu. The drinks arrived after our starter. Would not return.

The service was very special and caring, and the food was excellent. There was a good choice of wines albeit a bit expensive. We would eat again at the Wentworth and recommend to others. We only found out on the night that the link with James Martin had ceased. I was drawn to the restaurant after reading a review in the Times about a year ago, which I suppose, the reference to James had an influence on our visit.

We visited the Talbot for a Sunday lunch. The décor is very nice and obviously a lot of money has been spent on the re-furbishment. The waiting staff were helpful and friendly. We both had 3 courses and what we had was nicely cooked and tasty, however the portions are minute and we felt that having less than the 3 courses would have seen us leaving the restaurant hungry. The bill was very expensive for what you get!

We spent a weekend at The Talbot recently and enjoyed dinner in the restaurant on each evening.Every dish we chose was cooked well, seasoned properly and looked spectacular on the plate. The produce used is fresh and local, just as you would expect in a Country House Hotel. The new Head Chef is doing wonders in the kitchen, at this rate Dan should soon become a Michelin 'Rising Star' in the not too distant future!Great wine selection at good value, brilliant service, especially from Dominic in the restaurant and Steve in the bar.My one comment for an improvement, would be to enhance the lunch time menu, perhaps offer a couple of 'sharing platters' of Yorkshire and home made produce? We look forward to retuning soon!!

Six of us dined on Saturday evening at The Wentworth Restaurant in the Talbot Hotel, Malton. The welcome on arrival was warm and friendly, the bar service was very good and the restaurant staff were attentive. But the star of the show was definitely the food. The menu is quite short but offers excellent choices with imaginative dishes created from locally sourced produce. We dined on roasted pigeon, twice cooked cheese soufflé, roasted & pickled beetroots with local goats chees to start; main courses comprised Ampleforth Abbey cider glazed pork – simply fabulous; Loch Duarte organic salmon; Yorkshire Dales spring lamb with a whole array of freshly cooked local vegetables. Excellent puds included the Talbot’s sweet Yorkshire Pudding with marinated cherries and Amaretto ice cream. The wine list is comprehensive and shows a respect for local values. We had excellent Ch Cissac at a very modest £47 and some of the finest Royal Tokaji at £60 for 50cl to accompany the pudsJames Martin has severed his link with this restaurant…but you would never have noticed!

My husband and I had dinner here Sunday evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary. What a beautiful meal, couldn't fault it (and we are very critical foodies!). Beautiful surroundings, the staff were efficient without being obtrusive and very friendly without being overly familiar. The food was stunning, absolutely amazing, better than we have had in some Michelin starred restaurants in London. We will be back again very soon, loved it.

Had lunch in The Bar at The Talbot today and was really disappointed. Sandwiches served on sliced bread (with the quality and number of excellent good suppliers in Malton) it would have been nice to see some local / artisan produce. The crisps served with the sandwich were soft too! Not great.

We had a meal for five, Sunday lunch and it was my wife's birthday. The food was excellent and good value at £20 for two courses. Service was very professional. My young daughter only eats chicken, not on the menu that day but very quickly sorted and the roast chicken dinner turned up with our other meals. All the food was high quality, attention to detail was very noticeable. Finally, we brought a cake for the birthday and asked if they could bring it in during coffees....this came on a platter, with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate icing and a accompaniment of fruit....again, attention to detail. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for lunches, evening meals and special occasions

We last ate here around 2 years ago, at a private function. Having decided to visit the monthly food market in Malton, it seemed a good opportunity to try a lunchtime meal here, so we booked online the night before. Arriving early, we sat outside in the grounds and enjoyed a glass of wine in the sunshine. Although early for our booking, the staff were happy to show us through to the restaurant, where we were lucky to have a window table with a nice breeze cooling us down. We ordered from the set lunch menu, I ordered goats cheese and tomato tart, whilst my wife ordered the farmhouse pate. Both were excellent, stylishly presented and reasonable portion size. We both then ordered the pan fried plaice, which came with a fennel " risotto" and chick pea and chorizo cassoulet. The fish was delightful, as was the fennel. Perhaps the cassoulet was a little too highly spiced for the delicate fish, but this may just be a little picky? Decided not to have desserts but instead ordered the coffee which came with petit fours. Altogether an excellent meal, lovely surroundings, friendly, relaxed but efficient service and a reasonable bill of around £53 including the two glasses of wine, will DEFINATELY eat here again when we are in the area. Thank you.

We visited mid week for an evening meal, we received a lovely warm welcome from the staff and shown to our table straightaway. Service was excellent and the food was amazing, especially the Baileys Bread and Butter pudding with vanilla custard! The food is well priced for the quality, we definitely need to visit again before we go home.
