Food is good, but overpriced. Service is awful. Staff are quite arrogant and unwelcoming.

Staff hygiene not too good. If you smoke, you should definitely wash your hands afterwards. Not the best chips or good value, tasted stale(oil needed changing)

I sent my friend to buy a Clark’s Pie the man lied to her and sold her a horrible dirty tasteless pie. Don’t lie to customers

Chips were hard and undercooked on 2/3 visits here. Such a shame because when they are cooked the chips are great.

Definitely my favourite chippy in the area! The chips are always cooked properly, unlike AFB whose chips are undercooked and greasy! The chips here always have good texture, and the batter on battered items also always comes up lovely and there is never too long to wait either even with the care to the cooking of the food properly and also I think that high quality produce is used as the oil even tastes nice too!

Everything freshly made came in here for fish and chips and it was reasonable price and really nice highly recommend

Me and my son came here for the first time. They have a sign saying cod supper £10.50 so I looked at the sign then said to the man can I have the fish and chips. He then charged me for fish and chips single items not the meal, as they were making up the order I said can I have the mushy peas with mine .. the man behind the counter was so rude. Told me I ordered fish and chips and mushy peas weren't in the price I'd paid. So then I stood there worked out how much I had spent then questioned why it came to so much for just chips curry sauce and jumbo sausage in a tray and if they had charged me for one fish and one chips. His attitude was you asked for the items I've changed them all separately. I have to honest the attitude of the guy has put me off coming back, who even puts the items through separately when you specify you want them as meals! He wouldn't have it tho. Then they started speaking amongst themselves saying I was unbelievable, so was all the other customers who don't order the food correctly and blame them! Absolute shambles they know they are swindling you out of money by doing it all separately even tho their menu have the options your asking for !!!

Food is good quality but customer service was terrible. Whoever was working spoke to us with little respect and tried to dwindle us and make us feel wrong about our own order.

The attitude of the guy behind the counter (sun 4th June 14:30) is going to single handedly destroy this business!! Clearly doesn't care - at all - about the customers coming into the shop. Looks like plenty of other reviewers have noticed the same thing too. If this guy were in my business he'd be sacked after his first breath!

This is actually my fave fish and chip shop in Cardiff in terms of quality and portion size. And I eat A LOT of fish and chips 🤪... Then again I've not tried their mushy peas... Anyway I really enjoy it and have always found the guy being the counter friendly enough. People trying to 'single handedly destroy' someones career should consider whether they always bring 100% positive attitude to work...

I’ve had mixed experiences with this place. The customer service has always been terrible, as have the mushy peas (like others have said!), but the fish and chips have always been consistently good. But I couldn’t believe tonight’s “large” portion of bland, undercooked chips was £4! £5.70 in all with a pot of curry. I know the cost of everything has gone up, but this just seem unjustifiable.

Foods nothing spectacular, standard chippy with the bonus of the staff having a chip on their shoulder. Didn’t finish ordering and was telling me how much. Felt awkward and rushed. Honestly don’t even bother. Better to go down the road to Albany fish bar or better yet Millenium Fish bar

Worst mushy peas ever - no joke. Dry, crunchy, cold, tasteless grey mush. Chips undercooked. Fish was okay luckily.

2 Haddock and chips , fish very dry (overcooked), also mushy peas had no taste, staff friendly but unusual for fish not to be cooked properly. Hopefully a blip as usually very good from here.

right i love chips infact im in love with chips. i decided to go on a little trip around cardiff collecting and trying to see which is the best chip shop but this wellfeild rd didnt lead up to expectations in fact i was very sad when they told me they were out of irish curry sauce i was hurt the chips took about 5 mins to cook and i had to go with the gravy im hurt physically hurt. penylan fishbar did me very nice so. heres my message to you wellfeild chip shop ill be coming soon. on the 29th of april at 7;00pm ill be there on the dot i want the chips flowing nice and the irish curry sauce better be led to perfection see you there

Take away, cash only. Really enjoyed the fish and chips. Fish cake is real chunky and tasty. The spicy curry sauce tastes homemade and very spicy - blow your socks off (in my view)...I will definitely return...

Great quality and tasting food at reasonable prices.

Nice, clean, fish and chips. Good portion size too. Their curry sauce ain't my cuppa tea though as it had a very prominent tomato taste to it but, to each their own. My main gripe with this place, as with all other places like it, is it's cash only. I only had a £20 on me so, couldn't get everything I wanted. Luckily there's a Tesco just over the road though. I'll never go back there for that reason alone. Pay ya taxes, ya cheating dogs

It's a very basic place but is always open and therefore it's easy to find yourself there. The attitude is bad though. Food basic, doesn't accept cards and I go elsewhere if anywhere else is open.

I asked what ingredients were in their chips and they were so rude and disrespectful. I can’t eat pea protein and it’s a common ingredient in some chips these days. Instead of listen to me and just check they started talking about how they use mushy peas in the kitchen. I said that’s fine I’m not ordering those and I’m aware of that, they then starting talking about gluten?! I can have gluten and never even mentioned it?! They continued to ignore my request to check anything for me and made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and humiliated in front of other customers to the point I left. In this day and age with so many intolerances and allergies a request to check basic ingredients should be met. No one should be ridiculed and made to feel like I did in their shop because of an allergy that I can’t not help. Awful service!!!

Lovely freshly cooked cod & chips at a reasonable price and huge portions compared to other places. Highly recommended.

Two of us got large fish and chips for the walk home after a quick pint. The service was excellent, the fish and the chips were cooked fresh to order. They were among the best I've had. My only complaint is its a touch more pricey. But again, great quality food.

Great value Cod, chips and mushy peas for 2 for under £15. Generous portions and probably the least greasy fish and chips we can remember having. Good efficient service too. Highly recommended.

The chips are made from real potatoes but never soggy from the frying process; the batter always stays attached to the fish: I was just there and they’re the best! It’s not a one-off experience: they’ve consistently been excellent. So in summary: accept no substitute!

great food again as per norm, quick service, always busy. Only gripe is parking is difficult now thanks to Cardiff council..... Owner feedback however, your guys working need to wear Covid masks properly, not just pulled over the mouth but covering their nose too ! Its law, please train them up !

Just went to order fish and chips. Was inside waiting to order. Staff ignored me and my partner and served a woman who queue jumped. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Took longer and a tad more expensive than other chippies I've been to. But there's a very clear reason; the food was cooked fresh and excellent quality. Good service too.

Three of us all had lovely generous fish and chips. Which were ready quite promptly with good service and would have left 5 stars except we also had mushy peas which I had read in the previous reviews maybe a weak link in the menu I have to say I don’t think the chef tastes or likes them as they were dry. So I will have curry sauce next time as otherwise can’t fault them they are indeed the finest on Wellfield road Oddly Cash only !

This fish & chip shop has gone down hill, our fish and chips were well below average this evening! The fish was Very dry and the chips were not fresh, I do not recommend this place.

VERY DISAPPOINTED by the chips, they tasted like cardboard, maybe it's trendy to fry chips numerous times ( that's what they seemed like) Mushy peas were dry and inedible Cod, however was very nice.

I only leave a review if a place is very good or very bad. This was very (very) bad. I ordered a standard cod, chips & mushy peas. The peas were an abomination: dry, congealed and tasteless. So dry that they could only be served in slices. An absolute travesty. The chips had the texture and, I imagine, the taste of cardboard. Practically inedible. The cod was perfectly OK. I might have visited at the wrong time, 8.30pm on a Tuesday, as, unusually, there was queue outside. But based on this experience I certainly won't be returning in a hurry.

My husband picked up fish and chips for us and our two little boys last Saturday afternoon. All of us thoroughly enjoyed! The fish was tasty with lovely crispy and flavoursome batter (and not a bone in sight in the fish) and the chips were delicious too. Perfect. We used to go to another chip shop in Pen-Y-Lan but not any more - the Wellfield is our new favourite!

Went today and told only cash payments. Cashpoint across the road swallowed my card. The owner said to take my food and pay next time. How lovely as he doesn't know me at all. Food was beautiful. Will definitely go back

Sin duda el mejor pescado y patatas fritas de la zona. Servicio amable y servicial también. Las porciones son enormes y siempre compartimos una porción de chips entre dos y eso es más que adecuado. Hemos comido pasteles de pescado, bacalao rebozado, guisantes blandos, pero mi favorito son las picaduras de pescado, como goujons rebozados, crujientes y deliciosos. También una gran porción. Desearía que tuvieran un menú en línea o disponible para recoger. Si no hubiera leído sobre las picaduras de pescado en TripAdvisor, no habría sabido de ellas.

Have to say when we have fish and chips from here it never disappoints! Fish is cooked to order with lovely crisp batter that stays crisp to the end, all served with equally tasty chips and a slice of lemon and in a box! Yummy!

Great fish and cooked while you wait. The batter is very thin and crispy. Chips are plentiful and cooked well. All served in a cardboard box to keep food warm whilst you travel home. Perfect!

Mi esposo y yo nos apetecimos algunas fichas después de un concierto en The Globe y yo habíamos marcado este "chippy apropiado" en nuestro camino hacia allí. No decepcionaron: realmente frescos, no recalentados y masticables, como a veces se hace tarde en la noche. También nos dieron una porción muy generosa! Fuimos los últimos clientes a las 10: 56 pm (cierran a las 11: 00 pm). ¡El tipo que está detrás del mostrador también nos dio dos pasteles de pescado completamente gratis, lo que hizo de nuestro día! ¡Gracias! ¡Usted merece esta crítica positiva e ignora a los que odian!

El buen pescado y las papas fritas que cambian sus precios tanto, cada semana en el pasado, mantienen los precios estables. . Clientes como todos estos precios, después de todo, todavía son los mejores en Cardiffm. Sus cajas están dispersas por todo Pentland por estudiantes que "comen y caen".

Simply put, I have yet to experience a bad meal from this chippy. Always piping hot, fantastic chips, 10/10 for service and the price is bang on. I'm very lucky to have such a fantastic chippy on my doorstep !

Can't fault the fish 'n' chips from here, no greasy food, just tasty. If wanting fish say as you go in as the guys will pop them in the fryer so they are freshly cooked. The other thing to note is that they don't accept any payment other than cash. The staff are friendly, the food is good and it doesn't cost the earth. We are regulars.

Visiting and popped into my favorite chippy. What struck me today was the staff’s kindness. A homeless man walked in and wanted to pay for chips. Didn’t have enough cash. The lads working at the Wellfield showed humanity and offered the guy free chips and extra curry sauce. That is real humanity - much more than and corporate social responsibility program can imagine. Had fish and chips last night, chips were lovely but my fish wasn't fresh and i will never understand why a fish and chip cannot make its own tartare sauce, the packet stuff is vile

Just popped in for a bag of chips, having noticed their large sign on the wall claiming to be the best chip shop in Wales? (According to who I wondered?) I immediately regretted it, the chips were oily, and tasted like they had been re heated or maybe just been sat around for a while, almost stale. Ended up throwing them away. I thought I'd try this relatively new chippy but will stick to Albany chip shop from now on as they are consistently good.

Tried this chippy out when it first opened, cannot say I was impressed, chips had clearly been sitting in the fryer for far to long.

We had cod bites, chicken nuggets and chips. Cod bites consisted of long strips of fried batter with very little cod in them, actually 1 out of 4 had no cod at all. Lots of oil dripping. Chips were no more than average, the big ones were underdone. Might have been a bad day, but I won't be rushing to return.

I had wanted to visit this place for a while so decided that coming here after a day out would be a good opportunity to try it out.

Been here a few times now for fish and chips, and have enjoyed them on each occasion. Fish was cooked to order with nice crispy batter, just how we like it, chips also nice and fresh. Will be back again.

Genuinely one of the finest fish and chip shops in Cardiff. Great service, fresh ingredients. We ordered fish bites, I really liked their take on cutting the fish in long slices - so convenient to eat! We moved to Cardiff over 3 years ago and tried many takeaways however a struggle to find good fish bar continued up until now - for us, wellfield is the winner. We are quite particular in the way we like our food. Wellfield ticks the quality box for us.

Wonderfully crispy batter, freshly caught fried fish cooked to order and great chips! It is simply first class. Added to this are a variety of lovely curries and mushy peas. I can't think of a better fish and chip shop anywhere! Well done and keep up the good work.
