we booked and stayed for 3 nights with another couple. we had a junior suite and the other couple a normal double, both rooms were in the new block extension, not newly built but appeared to be that way. everything seemed brand new, lots of thought had gone into the rooms, bathrooms and even the facilities were fantastic. staff were so friendly and could not do enough to help us. food was great, evening menu and breakfast. would recommend unconditionally. 5 star easily.

What a lovely relaxed meal we had here. From the moment we arrived it had a cosy family feel, and were even greeted by a black Labrador which me and my boyfriend loved as we’re a big fan… was nice to see that the restaurant is dog friendly. The dining area was nice and spacious and we were able to choose wherever we wanted to sit which I thought was good. I liked the vinyl placemats, never seen this before! My boyfriend chose the mixed grill, which was a pretty huge portion but he polished off the lot, each piece of meat cooked to perfection, accompanied with crispy chips and onion rings. I went for the lasagne which you could tell was homemade with a lovely refreshing salad and delicious garlic bread on the side. We wish we had room for puddings as they also sounded yummy… next time! The waitress who served us was really friendly and chatty and made you feel at home :) Can’t wait to return here for another lovely meal.

Went here for a meal on valentine's day evening. The food was absolutely delicious. We had lamb rump and duck. The veg was perfectly cooked too and I've never had such tasty broccoli! Very pretty presentation. The lady who looked after us was lovely, very friendly. Also tried my husband's raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake, amazing, really wished I'd ordered one!

Being local to this establishment we have been going to the waterwheel restaurant over a duration of 6 years, it has just got better and better. Having tried most restaurants in an 8 mile radius, this has to be the best, top marks, it has improved every year. Having eaten in many 4 and 5 star hotels, and Michelin star restaurants around the world, This is fantastic hidden gem. 10/10 We will continue to go, its an amazing personal family feeling not rushed, which is difficult to find in Cornwall, as so many places in Cornwall feel as they are money orientated machines, in out and don't give a damn. The waterwheel is not this, and I hope it keeps it family feel character.

Spotless, beds & pillows incredibly comfortable, very friendly & caring staff, roomy car park, generally quiet, excellent breakfasts & evening meals, beautiful gardens, don’t expect a 4 star hotel but was a quality B&B. Quite central for excursions, choice of drinks in bar appalling- 2 lagers on tap only + number of bottled beers (poorly cooled). Wine choice seemed ok. If it’s important to you Wi-Fi terrible- constant “drop-outs”. Would I stay here again or recommend……actually I really would, really nice experience all round. Like all Cornwall COVID has hit the hospitality business hard, good luck to Francesca & Mark for the future, thanks guys!

After the most hospitable welcome, having arrived early and quite prepared to have a drink on the terrase, we were seated almost immediately. Delicious breaded "cornish" brie and squid starters were light and tasty. Scampi and pie of the day went down well. But its setting and team service are the best reason for visiting. Highly recommend.

Arrived after looking for somewhere online on the journey between looe and perranporth, we got there half hour before they opened and started service - but because they were quiet they let us, along with our dog in to order. The food was absolutely amazing, we had ribs, lasagne, salmon and mushroom stroganoff, all of it was perfect! The portions were really generous, the owner was very accommodating and our server, Donna was so helpful and friendly! The kids enjoyed their desserts and the bathrooms were really clean, the cleanest nicest toilets we had used so far throughout Cornwall (in my 10 year olds opinion) Thanks all esp to the kitchen, best meal we have had during our holiday. And they have a super friendly bear of a dog there to welcome visitors too! 11 out of 10! A must visit if you are in the area.

Very friendly waiting staff. Especially the blonde haired lady . Who had her son working in the kitchen. She was excellent. Very smiley. Funny and again nothing too much trouble. Booked this online at short notice as I needed a place to stay near Charlestown but due to the Charlestown Regatta, finding decent accommodation was hard or needed a second mortgage. The Waterwheel ticked all the boxes and the recent reviews are very accurate and indicative of the current situation.Probably more suited to the "Grey" market like us, which is why I chose it. I didn't want to be woken up by noisy children or kept awake by the drunken bars of Newquay. This is a small quaint and friendly B&B and I loved it!Looking at some of the pictures here some are clearly quite old there is a new extension built on one side and the remainder has been refurbished to a high standard. The Gardens are quite something to behold and luckily our bedroom overlooked them.Unfortunately our itinerary did not allow us time to use the Bar or restaurant facilities but breakfast in the conservatory was excellent as was the service. We had a "Small double" which suited us perfectly as we were only there for 3 days most of which we spent out touring Cornwall with the family and grandchildren who where staying in Charlestown, so we only used the Waterwheel as our base camp.Interestingly, the Antipode of this place is in New Zealand and the lush ferns and gardens are very reminiscent of this.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate my little sisters 30th birthday. We were a party of 6 adults and 2 very well behaved children. My brother in law called ahead of our reservation to confirm the time we were booked in for, which was 6.30pm. My brother in law then received a call from someone at the restaurant saying that we should get there for 6pm to be served at 6.30 as the restaurant was VERY busy. This meant that instead of a leisurely drive over we were all rushing to finish getting ready and rushing off to the restaurant. Upon arrival we were met with a completely empty dining area except for the Waterwheels resident dog which i found to be odd at a place that claims to be 'Fine Dining'. It was an interestingly decorated placed with a mix of tat, interesting art work and old vinyl records as place mats but all in all it was very clean. The rotation of staff was amusing but when there is only one table i suppose they have to be seen to be doing something?A young waitress took our drinks order when it came to my nieces it seemed like she didn't know any non alcoholic or non fizzy drinks options and despite them being old enough to not only comprehend English but also speak it, the waitress spoke over them to ask us- this is rude and a weird way to act.At this point a single gent walked in to take his seat at a table in the corner- woah guys talk about a mad rush!We seemed to be waiting a while for someone to come and take our food order which should have been simple but again it seemed the waitress was unsure of the menu and if my dad could add cheese and bacon to his burger (yes seriously). We had already been told they do not do children's meals but this wasn't an issue to us and my nieces chose the burgers. The menu was a very nice mix of cuisines- I picked the seafood curry and did not regret my choice the fish was fresh though i did find it odd that it did not contain everything that it professed to on the menu, my other half chose the fish and chips of which he is some kind of connoisseur and he regretted his choice as soon as it arrived- the portion was small and he said it looked and tasted as if it was frozen. My mother was happy with her duck meal and my brother in law had the pork three ways and again was happy.Desserts were fantastic the banana toffee waffle was divine but then again how can anyone get that wrong? Plates were cleared and we asked for the bill from one of the older staff members and again waited far longer than we should have until the younger waitress returned- we asked again and was told to see the guy behind the bar to settle our bill. All in all the staff set a very bad tone to our evening and a meal we had been looking forward to for months was soured by either poor management or total disregard for polite etiquette.Would not recommend or return.

We stayed here for 3 nights, mainly to visit the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The Waterwheel is ideally situated between the two and is also near to Charlestown (for Poldark fans) and Mevagissey (fishing harbour).Breakfast was taken in a large conservatory with views of the garden and duckpond. The "secret" can be discovered by walking through the garden and along the river path. Our room overlooked the garden and had an enormous, comfortable bed. There are tea/coffee making facilities with plenty of milk, as well as a small fridge that contained two bottles of water. All the items were replenished daily. There is a wide choice of food for breakfast. Hot dishes are cooked to order and the scrambled eggs are the creamiest I have tasted. We had two evening meals in the restaurant and had difficulty choosing from the extensive menu. The food was delicious and nicely presented. The Waterwheel is a credit to Mark & Francesca and their staff who set and maintain high standards and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

The staffing are amateur at best and need to keep their opinions to themselves. Our food order was taken and wine list presented after asking. 10mins after sitting down at our table and starters served we still were not asked if we would like any wine. Two of the four main courses were wrong and the sarcastic comments kept on coming. All of this was based on just four tables being served so there were no excuses for the poor service and lack of attentiveness.

From our scallops with apple and walnut slaw and ginger, to pork tenderloin with a creamy honey and mustard sauce to the piece de resistance, a home made treacle tart with clotted cream, we could not fault anything. There was even home-made Limoncello available made from home grown lemons.Afterwards, the hostess went out of her way to show us the sort of accommodation on offer, the sort which would put some four star hotels to shame. Friendly staff and a lovely black lab greet you in the bar prior to entering the dining room. Only one little point is the limited range of draught beer on offer, a pale and bitter would be good, but that's a personal view as I enjoy a beer with dinner and bottled ale just doesn't hit the spot like a good draught. We booked to stay at the waterwheel, hadn't really taken note when booking, it had a restaurant so this was a lovely surprise, we settle in our very clean and comfortable room, recently been re-decorated very nicely. We did eat in the restaurant, food is served between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm, the food is delicious, a good menu offering a varied selection of different foods, I must say I wish I had come across this accommodation earlier in the week, I would have checked in all week. This is a really lovely family run business, the owners have gone the extra mile, offering lovely accommodation, restaurant service with lovely food and a well stocked bar.

We decided to eat here based on the trip advisor score and comments. We phoned to book as advised on here but when we arrived and asked for our table of 2 we were asked to take our pick of all tables set for 2. unexpected but meant that we did get to choose where we wanted to sit. We ordered from the a la carte and I had the whitebait whilst my partner had the scallops. Couldn't fault either dish. For main course, my partner had the pork tenderloin whilst I wanted to order the crab cakes. At that point I was advised that crab cakes were not on the menu. I would have expected to have been advised of this when presented with the menu not when making my order. I plumped for the sea bass. Both mains were also delicious. My buts with this place relate to the attention to detail. As already mentioned we were not advised that crab cakes were not available when given the menu. During our main course no one came to ask if we were enjoying it. When we finished, again we were not asked what we thought of the meal. We were offered the dessert menu but declined. We were not given the option of tea/coffee or another drink. Finally we had to go to the bar to ask to pay the bill. Enjoy the food if you visit but be prepared to be left to your own devices

Having sought another place for an evening meal that was not too far from where we were staying I came across this place that was only 6 minutes from the premier Inn. I pre booked a table for 7pm and when we arrived we were both amazed at the warm and friendly welcome from the owners and the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed. The family dog greeted you with a wag of his tail and every now and then you heard a 'quack' from his toy duck as he greeted more customers who came in. The dog I will say was well trained and did not attempt to enter the restaurant where the food was at all. The meal was cooked to perfection and there was just about room left for dessert. Overall I rate this as a well organised and friendly place to have a meal and also the owners do accommodation. I would like to say please book in advance and don't be put off if there is a slight delay with your order when they are busy because the end result is worth every penny.

This was our second visit to the Waterwheel, and we were not disappointed. Francesca and Mark made us feel at home immediately, as did their lovely Labrador Kernow, such a clever dog. We had booked to eat in the restaurant on our first night, and the food was so good, we returned from our day out to enjoy another great meal. The ongoing project that is the garden is fascinating to wander around, and our hosts have created a wonderful relaxing haven with ponds, a waterfall, and many tree ferns. We intend to return to see how this is progressing.

Go!You arrive to a rather uneven carpark and wonder what the restaurant will be like. The entrance is like going in someone's back door, you wonder more ...Then you teach the comfy bar and the wonderfully cheerful, friendly staff. The loos are magnificent! The choice of drinks wide and the menu limited but varied. The restaurant is sophisticated and restful. The background music just perfect to make you feel conversations are private, but it does not intrude. If you have a dog they are welcome in the conservatory where the same food is served. Wifi is available and free. I had lasagna and garlic bread and my companion scampi and chips. The meals were piping hot, tasty and portions large. Not so large we couldn't have puddings which are also very good. I can't praise the waiting staff enough for their willingness to adapt the menu to one's lines and dislikes (garlic bread substituted for chips for example), and their unfailing friendliness and smiles.

We were staying in a cottage a few mins away and decided to try the Waterwheel for our evening meal. 4 of us ate here on Sunday 24th July we had not booked but we were seated straight away . We were told that there may be a bit of a delay as they were short staffed that evening, we said we did not mind as were in no hurry. If there was a delay we were not aware of it we were served quickly and efficiently and we all enjoyed our food immensely. Fresh and delisious, I strongly recommend the Mushroom and Red pepper Stroganoff.

Three of us - my wife and I and our grandson - stayed here at the beginning of July. Out of seven nights we only dined twice at the Waterwheel, in part because of the slightly limited range of items on the menu. Those evening meals were, on the whole, more satisfactory than the breakfasts ; the latter, especially eggs, tended to be undercooked. The family room we occupied was comfortable, despite a minute loo/bathroom; the shower room was better. Room service was very good.

Had a lovely family meal and the staff were brilliant. The only reason for 4 stars rather than 5, is because I thought it was a little too expensive. Especially for what you got, would go back for sure, but only for special occasions. Plus we all loved the dog in the bar area, made you feel more welcome.

Made very welcome on a ridiculously wet fathers day evening (a whole day of rain and drizzle). Because we had our dog, we had to eat in the conservatory, but this was fine. Ate three courses each, every one was really well cooked and finished all plates completely. Nice attentive young girl serving us. Would thoroughly recommend

A lovely restaurant set in idyllic grounds. A friendly welcome awaited us and even though there was a little hiccup with our table reservation it was sorted quickly with no fuss. The menu offers a choice for all tastes and is not unreasonably priced. The restaurant was clean and very well presented. The food was superb.

It's been a few months now since we visited so my husband and I are definitely due a visit soon. What can we say about this wonderful hidden gem? It really is extra special when you dine here. As you enter the premises, it is immediately calming with soft, gentle music playing in the background and intimate tables of 2, 4 and 6 spread out in the main part of the restaurant. The impressive fire place and the low beamed ceiling makes it feel like home away from home and the menu is absolutely to die for. I recommend the set menu, with the choice of 2 course or 3 course meal. Excellent quality of food without breaking the bank. If you're lucky, you may come across the famous furry residents. Kernow, the handsome black Labrador and a gorgeous ginger tabby (can't remember his name! Sorry!) In October, the owners catered extremely well for my mum's 60th birthday. As we had such a large party (around 24 people) we were given the privacy of the conservatory room just beyond the main room. All the food was gorgeous and the service continued to be impeccable. To really finish the icing on the cake, if it's a clear evening you can enjoy post-dinner drinks outside in their newly landscaped garden. Looking forward to visiting again.

The venue was recommended to us so we booked dinner in the restaurant for 5 of us, the welcome was nice very professional. Good selection at the bar. One of our party wanted his drink from the bottle and was told "how common". To which we raised our eyebrows but let it go, maybe it was just a little joke. The dinning area was busy, we were not shown through to our table but we told to just go into the restaurant. We sat at a table we thought was ours. Good job it was. We ordered food and again the waitress had a bit of banter with one of our party which was fine. The food arrived in good time and was delicious. We had to ask for more drinks, which was not great. when we asked for coffee one of the ladies wanted a flat white to be told "we don't do posh coffee it's just normal coffee". When we came to pay the bill we paid some cash and some on a card making sure we gave a tip of 10%, we asked for the card machine to be bought in to be told "we'll try" We then asked if we needed to go through to the bar to pay and they begrudgingly bought the card machine through to the table then explaining that it cannot always connect to get a signal, which was fine they just needed to explain. The woman then tried adding up the bill and could not do it, it was quite simple maths, £50.00 cash and £75.00 card payment = £125.00. She did not thank us for the money/payment and walked away muttering to herself. It was quite an odd experience. I did not feel that the service was very nice, not welcoming and certainly has not made me want to revisit. Its a shame as I had been looking forward to checking it out as i have friends coming to stay in the summer and was looking to recommend the Waterwheel. All in all the service by just 2 women let down the whole establishment.

We arrived in St Austell on Friday and wanted to eat here. We hadn't booked a table but the lady at the bar was very friendly and said there would be one available at 7.30pm. We had drinks and sat in the very comfortable bar lounge. Hubbie had a starter which was the smoked salmon and goats cheese ciabatta, delicious, almost a meal in itself. We both had the lasagne, which was excellent. The raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake was divine and Hubbie said the lemon sorbet was the best he had tasted. It was the best meal we had whilst staying in St Austell and we wished we had gone back again, but we were only there three nights and had booked elsewhere, which unfortunately didn't match the Waterwheel.

Found this delightful upstairs cafe by chance and had some of the best vegetarian food for a long time. We were made very welcome and chose the hummus bowl and roasted veg toasted sandwich. Both were excellent and very filling.

I've only ever called in for a beer but no complaints so far and staff are nice too. There's a big beer garden which is very useful for the kids and dogs.

The ice creams here are beautiful! Really generous portions and are very well presented. The customer service we received was outstanding, my daughter had a massive meltdown (ASD) and they were nothing but supportive, understanding and helpful. We'd had a very tough day today with meltdowns galore and this one was by far the worst of the day yet I never felt alone or judged. People like you make the biggest difference and I am so very grateful for you going out of your way to help and care. Thank you x
