Not many places in Shrewsbury offer a taster menu, but @thewalrusrestaurant has built a reputation for its culinary creativity in recent years. With a chic bar area for cocktails and an intimate restaurant space, diners are treated to a cozy atmosphere, with some tables overlooking the river. ⭐️4.5/5 Recommended👍🏻 Price 💸💸/💸 The meal began with delightful amuse-bouches designed to tantalize our taste buds. The light crispy pastry encasing smoky, soft beef tartare was a standout! Bold, flavourful, and utterly captivating. It certainly set the tone for the feast ahead. Next came the pumpkin bread with a pillowy-soft center beneath a perfectly baked crust served with miso-infused butter. **Starters** Porcetta: The first starter featured thinly sliced herbed Porcetta, capers, and a hint of citrus, combining to create a refreshing and harmonious dish. This dish divided opinion with one of us raving about the flavour combinations and the other left unsure. Mushroom: The second starter showcased the earthy taste delightful texture of mushrooms and potato in a rich, indulgent sauce. The exquisite morels added depth and elegance to this satisfying course. **Mains** Sole: The first main course was a medley of bold flavors and textures. Grilled lemon sole, English asparagus cooked to perfection paired beautifully with brown shrimp and the crunch of toasted hazelnuts. The hollandaise sauce provided richness, but a lemony curd like accompaniment felt unnecessary and the whole dish slightly over-salted for our taste. Dry Aged Duck: The second main brought duck served two ways complemented by tamarillo. Tamarillo, something you don’t often see and reminiscent of sweet peach plus butternut squash, parsnip, beetroot, and carrot slivers. While the duck had the desired layer of fat this could have benefited from more rendering, the flavours however were intriguing and enjoyable. **Desserts** Rhubarb & Custard: For those less inclined towards sweet deserts, this offered a perfect balance: vibrant orange cream, fresh tart rhubarb pieces, rhubarb sorbet, and meringue tiles. Carrot & white chocolate: Delicious!

What a lovely little gem we have found! Service was outstanding, the staff were all friendly and very knowledgeable, my partners allergies were catered for without fuss. So very impress before we even talk about the amazing food. We can the three course menu and wasn’t disappointed. Possibly the best food I’ve ever had. The honey cake was so nice, I almost cried. The cocktails and drinks were on point, my rum infused old fashioned was delicious. It wasn’t just the food, the expertise was fabulous.

Our taxi dropped us on the riverside but the entrance is on the other side just a ls a pointer for others. This place has come on since we visited the earlier much smaller venue. Excellent restaurant area which has a quality feel and they are certainly holding their own on the food. We came with our 2 daughters on a Saturday for the tasting menu. We had a great table looking over the river. Service by the young staff was efficient and friendly. Our daughters loved the Japanese milk bread as everyone seems to mention.. all the courses were lovely with favorites being the Mushrooms and also the sole. Slightly disappointed on the duck but that is being very critical.. overall very happy with the experience.

What an amazing experience trying the tasting menu. The restaurant was very good about my food allergy and changed one dish to make it suitable. The flavours of each dish were perfectly balanced with the seasonal ingredients. We particularly enjoyed the lamb dish and the rhubarb desert was perfectly light and refreshing before the decadent chocolate and peanut desert. Staff were very attentive and explained each dish as it was presented. Looking forward to going again in the near future.

Amazing evening of food and drink. Every course was beautifully presented and served with fantastic knowledge from the front of house team. MORE AT Google

The Walrus – an aptly named restaurant that promises grandeur, yet like its namesake, sometimes feels a little out of place in the fine dining world. Let’s start with the highlight of the evening: the homemade Japanese milk bread. This wasn’t even a “main” item on the menu, yet it stood out above everything else. Warm, fresh, and delightfully soft, it was beautifully contrasted by crunchy pumpkin seeds and complemented by the salty richness of the miso butter. A perfect bite, one that sets expectations high. Unfortunately, the accompanying starter—a raw beef and beer tart—fell flat. The flavours were muted, and the beef seemed oxidised, as if prepared well before service. It lacked the freshness and vibrancy one would expect at this level. Moving to the mains, the Winter Salad was well-prepared but uninspiring. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, yet the dish didn’t feel special or exciting—it lacked interplay to elevate it beyond the ordinary. The Brixham Crab dish was a disappointment. Served completely cold, the crab’s flavour was overpowering, and the balance was thrown off without enough acidity to counter it. Worse, I found bits of shell in the crab, which made the experience less enjoyable. The brown crab mousse had a gritty texture and an unappealing bitter note, and the cauliflower added little to the dish. This was not the strong introduction to the meat courses I had hoped for. The chicken course offered a reprieve. A thoughtful combination of textures and flavours, the chicken itself was perfectly cooked and paired nicely with the lovage and apricot. It was warm (not hot), and while it wasn’t groundbreaking, it was a well-executed dish. The venison, unfortunately, continued the trend of dishes arriving cold. While the walnut pairing worked well and the meat was cooked properly, the dish lacked the character and intrigue one expects from a main protein in a high-end tasting menu. It felt like a missed opportunity to deliver something memorable. Desserts were a step up from the mains (though still not on par with the milk bread). The Green Apple and Marigold dish was refreshing, with a clean and vibrant marigold sorbet that—unsurprisingly—was cold (but this time appropriately so!). The flavours paired nicely, leaving a light and satisfying finish. The final dessert of Chocolate and Mandarin was a highlight. When all the components were combined, they created a delightful explosion of flavour—rich, balanced, and  enjoyable. The Walrus promises excellence with its Michelin Guide recognition, stellar reputation, and premium price tag, but it fell short in delivering a truly memorable dining experience. While there were moments of brilliance, like the delightful milk bread and a well-executed desserts, much of the meal was let down by a lack of hot food, which gave the impression that some dishes were not freshly prepared. This recurring issue, coupled with underwhelming flavour combinations and a lack of creativity in certain courses, left me questioning whether my expectations were too high—or whether The Walrus simply failed to meet the high bar it sets for itself.

For New Year's Eve, we decided to visit The Walrus restaurant in Shrewsbury, hoping for an unforgettable celebration. The Michelin Guide and high ratings made us choose this place. I was in a great mood and anticipated an exceptional evening. However, from the very beginning, things went wrong. When we entered the restaurant, no one greeted us. We waited for a while, but the staff continued to ignore us. Eventually, we decided to go upstairs. There, one of the waiters met us and suggested sitting at the bar to have a cocktail until someone became available to take us to our table. This upset me because I was wearing a long evening gown, and sitting at the high bar counter was quite uncomfortable. However, not wanting to spoil my mood, I decided to look at the menu and choose a cocktail. But as soon as I made my choice, the waiter suddenly appeared and silently escorted us to our table. The restaurant's atmosphere also disappointed me. The lighting was too bright, making the setting feel cold and lacking coziness. The interior looked simple and devoid of any aesthetics, which did not match my expectations of a Michelin Guide listed restaurant. My disappointment didn’t end there. The waiter spilled water on the table while pouring it and didn’t even bother to wipe it up. Furthermore, after our plates were cleared, the table remained dirty, and no one cleaned it for the rest of the evening. Additionally, when my napkin fell to the floor during the serving of dishes, the waitress noticed it but didn’t offer to replace it. Such a level of service in a Michelin guide listed restaurant is simply unacceptable. The dinner left only disappointment. As someone with extensive experience visiting restaurants, I can confidently say that The Walrus did not meet any expectations – not in service, food (the Japanese milk bread served with miso butter was the exception), nor in atmosphere.

I visited The Walrus with a group for New Year’s Eve to try the New Year’s Bar Tasting Menu. The tasting menu was 5 delicious courses. The highlights for me were the roast duck with fries and the dark chocolate & Baileys dessert. I also loved the Festive Fizz cocktail – it tasted exactly how Christmas should taste! Although it was a set menu, a couple of the courses were altered to accommodate the dietary requirements of our group. We had fabulous time at The Walrus, as always, and are looking forward to returning in 2025.

We had been meaning to visit this local restaurant for a while, but hadn't gotten round to it. We were then given vouchers for Christmas to cover the tasting menu and matching flight, which was an absolute joy to receive and we booked to go end of Feb 24 as it was a birthday occasion. On entry, up the stairs is a lovely cocktail lounge, where we had a pre-dinner drink ahead of going to our table. You can go in to the cocktail lounge even if you're not eating there and we will definitely be back to do this. Cocktails were well mixed with a good selection to chose from. We were taken to our table and could see it was pretty much fully booked, which is great to see in the current climate. The courses were presented beautifully and were all delicious. Beware, we did make the mistake of eating the whole of the milk loaf, which meant we were absolutely full to the brim by the time the final desert course was served, save some room. The waiting staff explained each course and the sommelier introduced the matching wines. All were very well paired and complimented the food very well. Was an excellent evening and would recommend. If I could pass on a couple of areas for improvement that would be that the restaurant did lack a little atmosphere and the waiting staff were on the scruffy side, with no clear uniform, which was a surprise given the caliber of the restaurant. However, this did not detract from the lovely food and wine. Thank you

We went to The Walrus for the first time on Saturday night. We were met by a friendly and informative gentleman who pointed out the location of the toilets before taking us upstairs and showing us the bar. We opted to go straight to our table. On a Saturday night, they only serve the tasting menu so this was waiting on the table for us to review and identify any issues we might have with it - we were happy with it. We decided to begin with a tasty cocktail before dining and opted for the wine flight to accompany our meal. We were brought some unexpected amuse bouche first comprising two little bites of deliciousness each. This was followed by some amazing Japanese milk bread covered in sesame seeds and seaweed - it was super tasty and had a great spring back structure. It was accompanied by some deliciously rich butter. Our food arrived and, course after course, we were amazed and delighted by the tastes, textures and flavours. Such clever ideas and cookery. Each course was given a great descriptive introduction by the staff serving it. The wine was enthusiastically served to us by a brilliant sommelier, who was very knowledgeable and clearly loves her job. Also she was interested to engage with us and listen to our own experiences. Without exception, the waiting staff were all excellent and seemed to enjoy interacting with us. The ambience was laidback and relaxing - the music choices were an interesting mix of pop/rock tracks over the decades. The staff were attentive to the extent that, when my wife commented on the temperature in the room, they turned the heat down slightly and offered to move us to a table away from the heating vent if needed. The toilets were also indicative of an attention to detail with air diffusers, hand towels and a high level of cleanliness. This was an amazing and captivating first experience here and we will go back.

Took my wife here for her birthday surprise & it didn’t disappoint. Wonderful service, knowledgeable staff. The taster menu was delicious with additional mini courses in between. Very good value for money. Not stuffy & pretentious, but casual and friendly. Would definitely recommend

The food was good, it was Michelin standard, presentation and taste very good. The downside for us was the lack of professionalism by waiting staff. A couple were very good but one wiped his nose with his hand before putting the desert on the table....

Great meal at the Walrus, had the tasting menu with wine flights. Each course was superb and the accompanying wine flights offered great value for money compared to some other restaurants in the guide. Would highly recommend, and look forward to visiting again.

OMG amazing. Cannot fault the food, service or atmosphere. We had the tasting menu and cannot recommend it highly enough. There are things I would not have selected individually but as part of the tasting menu so glad I had the opportunity to taste. It was my birthday so a perfect treat. Not cheap but so so worth it for the quality and taste of the food and the perfect service. We will be back!
