Staying nearby for the weekend and were recommended this local for a hearty meal. It was absolutely fantastic, complimented by warm and friendly staff, alongside an extremely kind landlord who made some great recommendations for some local hiking spots! You can’t miss out on coming here if you’re in the area! One of the best meals I’ve tasted in a long time!

First class food , very friendly and obliging, the beef for the sunday roast is served pink and so tender , brilliant. Loads of fresh veg and proper home made roasties . Returned again this week and the standards are just as good . Very reasonable for the quality and the ale likewise well kept .

A friend and I had Sunday lunch here and what a treat! There was a choice of beef or turkey, or you could have a mixed roast, half and half. Also a vegetarian option was available. We had a dish of fresh vegetables, cauliflower, carrots and red cabbage to accompany the meal. Lots of meat, parsnips, stuffing, pig in blanket, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, gorgeous tasty gravy, cranberry sauce, horseradish sauce, we had the lot between us. I had profiteroles for dessert, two very large ones with a large scoop of ice cream. We also had two pots of tea and the total bill was £43. Amazing value. The service was great too from Martin and a lady who was doing the bar and serving the meals. The meal was so tasty, we will be back and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Lovely food, dog friendly, nice people

Lovely little local pub close to where we stayed in Hook-a-gate, made us and our two dogs feel very welcome. Service was very attentive, friendly and polite. Food was excellent and portions were generous with very reasonable prices! Would definitely return and recommend. Thankyou to the team 😀

5 of us went for my birthday meal. The food and service were first class, and there was nothing too much trouble for the staff. Generous portions of scrummy food, and some nice ales.

We had just been to the Wrekin and on our way back home decided to stop for a pub lunch, we had a Brie and Cranberry sourdough sandwich and chips and a side salad with a lovely ale on tap. Would highly recommend it a great pub relaxed atmosphere.....

A fantastic pub off the beaten track with very welcoming landlords and fantastic food. We dropped in on the way back from Wales. It's a little off the main roads but this shouldn't deter a visit. The food and service was simply excellent. Fresh and home cooked food, just great.

Whilst my Husband & I was staying at one of the clamping Cherry Pods in Hookagate, for the Easter weekend break, we decided to book an Evening meal & a Sunday Lunch at the New Inn Pub/Restaurant which is a short walking distance from the Pod. Delighted we Did. A Great Traditional little country pub/restaurant As we walked into the Bar area for our sit down evening meal, as we had our 2 dogs (Westies) with us , there was a lovely lit open log fire which gave an Ambience to the place. We received a very warm welcome from Martin & staff. Excellent service, attentive, nothing too much trouble for them. Offered water for the dogs. Delicious home cooked quality food. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. Highly recommended. Will definitely be back to the New Inn Hookagate the next time we stay at the Pods Mary & Nick

We went to New Inn on Saturday night for a family meal for 7 of us. The food was delicious, The service was brillant and a great atmosphere. We would throughly recommend the New Inn.

We'd always meant to stop by and try this pub, and glad we did. The strings of warm glowing lights on the outside looked so attractive in the dark of night as we pulled up. Then a warm welcome with attentive, friendly service as we stepped inside, and a place by their lovely old fire. It was freezing outside but we soon warmed up and had a really nice evening. We'll be back.

Our family visited this pub just after Christmas and it was a great experience. Very welcoming owners and staff and really great home cooked food. My son said it was the best gammon he’d ever had! They also welcomed our dog who enjoyed lying by the fire. Definitely recommend.

Was looking for pub to book into an hour away from birmingham to meet my parents and pick up our 2 dogs. Found this lovely pub when searching for a dog friendly pub with a big car park (as we only drive a big van). Both the big free car park and a dog friendly attitude were confirmed online. Turned up an hour early and the pub wasn't open yet, so we parked in the corner of the empty car park and went for a walk. When we got back we were confronted by a member of staff who complained about our parking. This is normal to us, having such a large vehicle, and we asked where he'd like us to park, we were told to park anywhere else. We explained that we were booked in for lunch and asked if he'd like us to move, and then he asked us to park down at the unpaved end of the car park. Further complications with the same member of staff came up when the dogs arrived, as we where told that we should have informed them that we were bringing dogs and we couldn't have the table we had reserved. We were given another table in the bar by the front door. And the rest of the food and staff were lovely and welcoming. The mood was slightly ruined though by the stressed member of staff that we first encountered. Without that it would be a 5 star visit. Make sure when booking to declare that you are bringing dogs or large vehicles.

My wife and I are staying at a local VRBO and decided to visit the New Inn for dinner and drinks around 6:45pm on a Sat. We spoke with Martin who was extremely friendly and assisted us with seating and drink selection. I always seek out local beers and the New Inn didn’t disappoint with the delicious Darwin’s Original by Salopian Brewery. I had the King Prawns(£7.25) as a starter and the Pan Roast Chicken(£14) for the main. Both dishes were delicious. We sat outside on the patio area which was nice. Secluded from the outside traffic (not that there is much traffic) it provided a great area to relax and enjoy a meal. We will definitely return.

What can I say, great food, great pub, great service, the landlord and staff were 5 star, they put them self's out for you, food was great, would I go aga, most definitely.

We hhad an excellent evening meal there. Great value for money, helpful courteous staff and the dinner was fabulous. Top marks everyone!

Couldn't get in anywhere in Shrewsbury on Saturday evening so rang here and they couldn't have been more helpful. Excellent selection of beers and wines, all served with a smile. 3 main courses ordered, although the Starter selection looked really good. My lamb kebab was absolutely delicious!! Perfectly cooked and really tasty. Daughter had a lovely burger and my wife fish, and both said they were excellent. Chose sweets and they were equally as good. Mt wife was really pleased that the profiterols were still crisp, and I would highly recommend the orange ripple ice-cream. We shall definitely remember this place and will call again!

You couldn't ask for a nicer pub than this one. The owners are lovely people, always happy to help. We've just had Sunday lunch from here today. The food was absolutely lovely and plenty of it. One of our party had a nickel allergy and the owners were very supportive and helpful when we explained the situation which you don't always find. We've lived in Shrewsbury for 18 months now and had a number of meals from this establishment and loved every one. I hope more people realise what a gem this place is!

Ruth, my Wife and I, went to Pulverbatch to visit my maternal Family graves to pay our usual respects for Christmas. We sought sustinence and shelter on our homeward journey, all denied until Hook-a Gate, The New Inn, on the Bishops Castle Road. I enquired of the Landlord, If a meal for two could be provided and allowing a small dog entrance? no problem at all. We were received with a friendly, polite service, allocated a table, refreshments delivered to our table on ordering, some banter exchanged. The beef roast dinner was a very high standard and both Ruth and I would congratulate all the Staff concerned for an excellent individual service. Thank you all.

They fit us in at short notice and the staff were really friendly. The menu is pub grub but they did it really well. There are no kids menus so kids shared a main and that worked very well as portions are good. We had 3 different mains and all were tasty and presented with a care that shows they value their diners. Would happily recommend.

Great bar & restaurant. We dropped in unscheduled on car journey home. The bar staff couldn’t have been more accommodating & the food was perfect. Definitely recommend

Quality food, great portions. I can eat a lot and I was stuffed. Went here for my sister's birthday. Party of 5 and none of us had anything but positive things to say. One of the best meals I've had. 10/10 would definitely come again and 100% recommend to anyone looking for a nice place for a sit down meal with the family.

The New Inn is a very friendly local with amazing home-cooked food! Well presented, excellent tastes, great menu variety. Excellent gin selection. Cant comment on the beer as I don't drink it but believe it is very good and what is offered is changed frequently.

I can’t fault. My partner and I rung up last minute for a table and the lady was very accommodating. Covid procedures were clearly in place which was comforting to see. The food is exceptional we had nachos starter and burger (I absolutely loved it) and chilli. It was very tasty. The price also is exactly what you would want! The pub it self has a great car park and is very cosey Inside. There is also an outside area however it was cold so stayed indoors. This will be our new go to pub, we loved it!

Thank you all at the New Inn for the best takeaway Fish and Chip supper. The meal was booked for 5.00 , as soon as I arrived it was freshly cooked and packed up for me to take home piping hot. We chose fish and chips but they do offer a wide variety on their menu. We can highly recommend it.

Definitely worth a visit for food, we rang ahead and booked a table, service was quick and friendly enough. Food was fabulous, good portion sizes, lots of choice and the chips were proper chips! I had the 12-14oz Gammon, well cooked, 2 eggs and chips and it filled me up! Decent selection of drinks for a smaller pub. The beer garden was very pleasant and lots of parking. Price was a little bit more than bigger pub chains, but worth it for the quality of the food. We will be visiting again!

Literally incredible. Amazing service with smiles ! The chicken burger was to die for. Cooked perfectly and so crispy ! My sister in law had the fish and it looked amazing. Looking for place midway-ish between Halfway House (Shrewsbury) and Telford to meet up with my old boss and a colleague from back in the day.Not being so familiar with that area I searched Trip Advisor.What caught my eye about The New Inn at Hook-a-Gate was A) it is not a chain pub. 2) its Trip Advisor stats.27th best rated of 436 in Shrewsbury area. 105 reviews with none rated poor or terrible and just 2 reviews as average. My search was over.I love an honest straight forward "is what it is" country pub and that's exactly what The New Inn turned out to be.Nothing flash. Nothing pretentious. Nothing out of place.My guests made positive comment about their meals while I really enjoyed the Stilton burger I ordered. We didn't go for puddings.The staff were all friendly and helpful. I apologise to the lovely lady waiting our table for forgetting her name, but thank you. We sat talking for an hour or so at least after our meal and felt no pressure to move on.We all agreed that at some point we would return be it either the three of us again or as couples with our wives. The food at the New Inn was well priced freshly cooked and a good plate full. The beer, I was driving but the one pint I had was good. The staff were friendly and overall.Go support your local boozer.I will return to The New Inn. It's just a shame I don't live closer.

I went to the New Inn at Hook-a-gate on Friday 6th December for a Christmas meal with my family. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the food delicious. Staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

We decided to call on the spur of the moment, staff were very welcoming and found us a table.Beer and wine well kept and excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. We had the best meal we've had in a long time. Steak cooked to perfection with each component of the meal prepared and cooked really well, We finished with homemade profiteroles with chocolate sauce and ice cream, a real treat. We will return soon. Well done Chef!

An excellent establishment to meet up with friends and enjoy the ambiance of a country pub with excellent food. The proprietors Martin & Debbie try really had to make the visit a special occasion with real ales and excellent food. My wife and I recommend the Sunday lunches, but you must book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Although living locally for 40 years this was our first visit. We discovered the meats were sourced from Corbett’s of Shrewsbury Market. The combination of high quality ingredients and excellent cooking resulted in a gorgeous lunch. The beer was of excellent quality too. Thank you.

Staff are extremely friendly. Food is delicious and well presented. Although the decor is quite old and dated the atmosphere is lovely and warm and this is a perfect example of an excellent British pub restaurant.

I visited the New Inn tonight with my family. I must say it’s the best meal I’ve had in a long time, accompanied by great service and really friendly staff. Went here for a long awaited Sunday Pub Lunch with friends. I don't drink beer but drank 4 pints of Atlantic Pale Ale from Cornwall and loved it.The lunch was great, as good as I hoped for. Service was also very good.If you are in the Shrewsbury area I recommend you try it. Its great-Lance

stayed in a local touring caravan site last year ate in here twice , be warned bring a good appetite good portions the fish and chips was lovely didnt have much room left for a few beers after !!friendly staff great service well worth a visit.

We drove past here last night and noticed it was busy (always a good sign) so I quickly looked it up and saw how many rave reviews this place had. So I'm adding my own! We were welcomed in and guaranteed the next available table (we waited with a drink in the bar for an hour - happy to wait as we weren't starving yet). bar staff and management were very friendly and efficient. We looked at the menu whilst we were waiting. When it came time to order the dish I had decided on had sadly just run out, but these things happen when it's a popular venue with fresh foods. I decided on the stilton burger which was delicious, very succulent and clearly not processed. My partner and son also enjoyed their meals. We will definitely visit again (although we know to book next time!) and would recommend this lovely place to anyone.
