The Walnut Tree Inn in South Northamptonshire

Booked for Mother’s Day yesterday by my partner for 5pm a few days prior to event, arrived and nicely greeted and seated, meal came out very quickly but didn’t question, ordered from mothers day menu of two beef roasts, meal came and plates were incredibly hot, so much so had to request another plate for my 1 year old (ordered from the kids menu of fish fingers fries and beans) to be cold so that she could eat off of it and touch it. Began to eat and noticed food was cold apart from hot and incredibly hard and dry roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, veg and meat all cold and piled on hot plate, was asked towards end of meal if ok and partner replies fine as we didn’t have time to get into a request of a new dinner at this point, on paying for the meal partner advised meal was lovely tasting however very cold, chef instantly refuses my partner and said it wasn’t cold, then turned to myself and said I should have said something as all food was previously prepared and stored on hot plates, i didn’t know what to say to this but wasn’t happy hearing my food was prepared and stored on hot plates for the afternoon at £16.50 per person for beef roast dinner. Had this have been advised that food would not be freshly cooked on arrival I wouldn’t have stayed and found another restaurant for dinner. With that being said we were given bill with no further customer service. No offer of discount or free pudding to make up for cold meal, so paid and left. Prior to leaving we heard the table next to us comment on hard roast potato’s and decided to finish my Mother’s Day by leaving and not wanting to cause a scene, first time and last time attending the walnut tree.

We came to view the Walnut Tree Inn as a wedding venue and decided to stay on for some lunch afterwards. The building is very cozy and we felt really welcome! The food was delicious and brought out personally by the chef, who came to check on us (and other tables) throughout the meal. We would definitely recommend for food!

We arrived last night having traveled down from Cheshire for a funeral 🥲 the staff have been extremely friendly and helpful, food last night was great, had a great nights sleep, and just wanted to say it’s less than 5 minutes drive to the crematorium if anyone is looking for somewhere to stay close, hope this helps 😊

We recently had our wedding here and everything was amazing. We opted for the small intimate wedding and it was everything we could have wished for. Chrissie was brilliant, answered all our questions and offered help and advice

I'll always stop in a private hotel in preference to a chain, and overall this place is pretty good and I would stop here again.

Leave the kids at home and you'll be ok. We booked as my grandfather had his 90th birthday here. My wife is disabled and we have 2 young children so we booked the family room. The day was great and a woman named Chrissie was wonderful, really attentive considering they were short staffed. The children were excited to be sleeping in the same room as us. As the night went on about 9pm we were trying to settle the kids and we noticed it was getting louder and louder. The family room is just a bit over from being on top of where the place their live band every Saturday! (Which is my fault for not checking). The children, not being used to the noises were a mixture of frightened and getting giddy and had already said they wanted to go home. It was very difficult after an already long day. We made the decision to drive home through the night. We're glad we did but gutted we missed breakfast. We would have been OK on our own, may have even joined in the fun.

Went for a family birthday celebration lunch for two of our grandchildren. Excellent service. A great venue choice.

Great Hotel, lovely building and nice bar 🍸

Room was very clean but a little chilly when we arrived. That wasn't really a problem as we put on radiator. Service was excellent and staff very friendly. It was a well organised Burns night, had so much fun and food was delicious. Breakfast was lovely. We had a cooked breakfast and didn't see any grease. Will be visiting again.

Beautiful venue, We attended Burns Night celebration, Haggis was outstanding and service was prompt and with so many people being served well done to all the staff. My only complaint is hallway carpets need replacing showing signs of wear, other than that. A really amazing evening, thanks to all the team We would definitely visit again

What a lovely place to stay and even lovelier to have dinner at! We stayed here to rent a Narrowboat at the Gayton Marina the next day. Had no idea how wonderful the gourmet meal and service were going to be - such a long fantastic surprise. The grilled Hake and the braised duck were expertly cooked. Kevin took great care of us and was so funny. Would definitely stay here and most definitely dine her again.

Lovely meal out here today, really nice menu, lots of choice, well cooked homemade lunch. Really charming waiting staff, especially the chap.

Had an enjoyable stay. Rooms tired but clean and functional. Staff couldn't have been more helpful; I am gluten-free, and they were able to accommodate this easily. The only problem was they don't take cash, so it can be a problem if, like me, you leave your card at home!!!

Lovely updated country pub, previously The Blisworth Hotel or even The Station Hotel

Lovely hotel. Staff went above and beyond. Solo room small but functional. Bathroom lovely. Bar area is just great, and staff stayed late to make sure I could eat after getting stuck in traffic.

A very nice pub, I was there with a friend to see a gig, they are a card only establishment which, to be honest, wasn't obvious when I arrived, lack of choice in this regard means I won't be returning sadly.

Another excellent Sunday lunch.

5 stars and more we had our wedding on 24th October 2024 absolutely outstanding. The whole day Chrissie and the team went far and beyond with everything with my suffering with anxiety she was beside me the whole time making it run perfect i cant describe how overwhelmed we feel by the love that was shared it's such a beautiful place I would highly recommend this venue from the music to rooms, food, staff decor was amazing we love u guys I'm still crying happy tears now wish u all the best in the future xxxxx Emma x Lee xxx

We celebrated our wedding in August and could not praise and thank Chrissie & her team enough for everything they did. The preparation & organisation right from the start was second to none. The food was exceptional the service throughout the day was superb.Chrissie went out of her way to accommodate our guests which we were so grateful for. The wedding package was good value for money & we didn’t have to worry about any detail it was all taken care of with care and attention. Our guests were really impressed with the food and accommodation too. Thank you Chrissie you are a real credit to the business and the day was all we could have wanted for our special day. This is a CASHLESS venue so avoid, avoid, avoid! If you support CASH use. At least three parties trying to pay cash within a few hours and all REFUSED. Will never visit again until Cash is accepted in payment. Food is mediocre: pre-salted chips, limited desert menu. Fizzy drinks were served from a plastic bottle at premium prices! Not all are draught. Atmosphere: noisy trains every few mins as literally right next to a mainline railway. Bland. A bit disorganised and chaotic service.

Great building but the staff haven't got a clue. The food is overpriced, badly cooked (raw) then thre attitude seems "tough" Not a pleasant experience

Great all round but yes some picky things: 1 tables outside need fixing 2 some chairs also dodgy 3 the bed could be upgraded to a king 🙏 4 the ploughman’s platter could include some meat and some more imagination to meet the price of 16£ 5 the full English could include two rashers of bacon, although good hell what’s another 40 pence to thd cost..? 6 a more selection of Jams would be nice Other wise good all round 👍The trains from a back room didn’t bother us - not sure about a front facing room …? The staff were very accommodating and coffee in the morning was a non stop pour for us - 🙏

Travelling past on the canal and saw the sign on the bridge so went for Sunday lunch. Stefan and his staff were all, without exception, very friendly and welcoming. We had our dog with us so sat outside in the shade. I can honestly say it was one of the nicest homemade Sunday lunches we have ever had in a pub. Everything was fresh tasting and hot, the beef was pink (as requested) and very tender. We were advised that all the meat was locally sourced and it tasted delicious. Really good portion side, so sadly couldn't fit in a desert. Will definitely be back as main menu looked enticing!

A warm welcome, great service and fabulous food. A drive to destination with ample parking and rooms too if you fancy a drink. With function rooms for hire, restaurant for fine dining and a lively bar with live music most weekends. I'm a fan 👍🏼

Well to start it's next to a main train line and they run every 10 to 15 mins and are loud. This means on a warm evening you really can't open your bedroom windows if you want to sleep. However if your in room 11 you have the emergency light with a green indicator this illuminates your room to day time hours, if that's not enough they really do need a new mattress, so don't expect to get much sleep. Food evening meal good pub grub nice pizza but too much salt for me. Breakfast was average. If anyone was around I would have given this feedback in person but the lady serving breakfast didn't even say good morning, or check everything was OK. As you guess won't be visiting again

We had Sunday lunch at The Walnut Tree as it was a halfway meeting point for our family. It's a lovely place - nice decor and a good ambiance. The food was excellent - the roasts were fabulous - good portions and lots of fresh vegetables - very tasty. The desserts were also great - a bit different and really nicely presented. Finally, all of the staff were great especially Stefan who was very friendly and helpful. We shall definitely come back again.

Beautiful Sunday meal with family

Today had a Sunday roast with friends. The food was Amazing. The service was perfect. I can give 5 star for everything. Most definitely will be back.

Stopped here for a night when travelling up North, close to M1. Rooms are basic but good value. Bar and Dinner were both very good, food choice and quality were excellent. Rooms are small but beds comfortable, toiletries basic so bring your own, no air con but fan in room. Fast freight trains running regularly at night so difficult to sleep with window open. Very tasty breakfast. All in all would return for food and stay.

We went to the Walnut Tree as a family of 4 adults and 2 children. We were welcomed by all staff and shown to our table. Everywhere was clean and tidy. The waiter was professional and couldn’t do enough for us, especially as we have two children who are a bit fussy with their food. The children’s menu was very good value for money and good size portions. Three of the adults decided to have the roast beef, which was delicious, one had the mushroom Wellington, which was well presented and filling. Definitely recommend the venue 😀

Happened upon this while looking for a mid-journey stop and couldn’t have been happier. Lovely place to stay and excellent food. Everyone was so friendly and the service was great. Highly recommended. The roast beef was some of the best I’ve eaten and great value for money

Just visited for a meal , great food, good service

Beautiful building, perfect location near the Grand Union canal. But the best thing was the excellent food! We came here for “one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had” said ‘Imself… whilst I tucked into the most perfectly cooked lamb and delicious dauphinoise potatoes with greens and shallots. Great staff too! Highly recommended and see you soonest!

Visited for Mother's Day lunch. Can highly recommend the roast beef and salmon. Absolutely delicious. Staff friendly and attentive. I loved how each table areas was private. Would highly recommend a visit.

From start to finish excellent food and service. Four of us had Sunday lunch 3 meat and one vegetarian there was nothing left on all four plates. Will definitely be coming back BIG thumbs up to all the staff and chef's great job

Was here last year. Great lunch in the restaurant. Thought we'd go back. Despite having booked well in advance we were not told there was a wedding there. Given a table in the bar with a reduced menu. The food was poor and over salted. Bar was full of the wedding party. Very noisy. Left as soon as we could. Will not go back.

We popped in here on the off chance. It looks very nice from the outside and lovely inside. We were greeted and asked to choose a table. The barman/waiter was very friendly and said he’d be with us in a second. He was and took our drinks order. Delivered the drinks and we ordered. I had smoked salmon and my husband had the spicy meatballs. Both were delicious. We then shared a Neapolitan pizza with a side salad each. Very generous toppings and the salad and dressing were lovely. Great food, great service and reasonable price. We will definitely be returning.

A lovely overnight stay for a friends nearby engagement party.

Had our wedding there on Leap Day and was amazing. The hospitality, food and co-ordination and management of Chrissie helped our day to go off with ease and left us to enjoy our day. Thank you to the team!

Nice staff but our room looked over the railway lines and was quite noisy all night, pub was canny for a pint.

Came here for a friend’s birthday, had a room booked for a meal which was lovely! We also had a table booked where the band was playing. This is where it went downhill. Locals were sat at our table and refused to move, locals and staff behind the bar made it clear we wasn’t welcome. The drinks were awful - charging a lot of money for cocktails that look like washing up water. Beautiful pub, but a very strange one!

Visited as a group of 9 to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. Went for a Sunday lunch and were accommodated in a lovely private room with impeccable service and fantastic food. Not my mother's first visit but was mine, will definitely return

We thought we would try this restaurant for our Boxing Day meal as we had not visited for some years and we were not disappointed. The food was very good and the staff attentive and friendly. We shall certainly be retuning soon

A great find, we used it as an overnight stopover when visiting family - and convenient for visiting the lovely canal museum at Stoke Bruerne about 4 miles away. Very comfortable room, welcoming and helpful staff everyone we dealt with was a credit to the business. Excellent food for our evening meal and breakfast. It's an older building with the expected slightly quirky layout, which we loved! The railway passes close by, so if that might bother you on a hot night where you want the windows open, then ask for a room at the back - the trains aren't particularly loud but they are quite frequent! Not the cheapest, but not silly prices either - for the quality offered, it's good value for money. The car park at the rear was a bit puddly but there are parking places at the front off the road. We will be back!

Booked here for a festive Christmas lunch, never been before. What can I say, brilliant service and delicious food. Special mention to the lovely lady serving us. Will definitely be back.

A group of 6 had reserved a table for a pre Christmas get together . When we were seated and as menus were handed to us, we were told that due to no gas in the village there was a limited menu. This was very disappointing as we felt that we should have been notified ahead , having had a reservation, to explain the problem. It was cold where we were sat , a temporary oil filled radiator didn’t really do much, and we were placed in a thoroughfare to the toilets , and with a function in another room , there was a frequent flow of people. There was no music where we sat, it was very un -Christmassy , so we listened to music off a mobile phone. Toasted Brie and cranberry sandwiches were missing the cranberry sauce , so when we pointed this out, the cranberry sauce was bought out separately , so not toasted in the sandwich at all. Someone asked for sweeteners for a coffee , there wasn’t any. So a dismal experience. As a group we have been here many times in the past , but we won’t eat here again.

Came for a family meal here on a Saturday lunchtime. Lovely cosy atmosphere with log fire going. Manager was extremely helpful especially as we had a 90 year old with us and her hearing is not good. Good selection of dishes on the Christmas menu, and the manager was at pains to point out that a lot of the food was locally sourced. All 5 of us enjoyed our meals, for 3 of us it was the Xmas Turkey which was very good and a generous portion size. Good choice of drinks and reasonably priced. What would have made it 5*? Well, the gravy was too salty, and the latte coffee was well presented but only lukewarm warm! I’d certainly go here again.

So , had the funeral reception here and very clean and stylish interior . They didn't charge too much for 20 covers ( around £15 each for tea , coffee and plentiful buffet). The food was very nice and service very good and no fussing around us. Location is a touch rural so make sire your guest have directions. The room was a tad cool but heating costs are tough for everyone so heating down a bit keeps prices down a bit. For how nice the place is you could do a lot worse in Northampton for the same prices. They also have ten bedrooms to rent and a bigger room for weddings , plus the classy main bar. Its more a wedding and events bar these days but ideal if you are looking for a reception area after you have the service at the Milton Malsor crematorium etc..., a mile or so away.

Lovely food and serving staff; shame about the bar manager who was upset with us for turning up when he had an event. We had booked a table online shortly beforehand and were told in a very rude manner that booking was closed so we could not have made a booking (despite email evidence to the contrary). He laboured the point and seemed very annoyed with us. We were about to leave when he suggested the server check with the chef. The chef was happy to cook for us and the server was kind and attentive. We won't be back though as we do expect some sort of welcome at a restaurant, rather than being made to feel as if we are the ones being rude and generally an inconvenience!

We stayed here on Thursday 2nd November. At first glance the place looked a bit old and in need of a bit of work but whatever you do don't let this put you off. The room and especially the bed were super comfortable, there was a bit of noise from the railway lines a short distance away but this soon just faded into the background. The staff were very polite and friendly, especially the lovely girl working in the bar and restaurant and the restaurant is the highlight of this place, the food is fantastic. It was presented beautifully and tasted amazing and we were lucky to have booked the room with our 3 course dinners and breakfast included. We would both highly recommend this place for a stay and even more so for a meal

We stayed the night here, which was very comfortable. We had dinner from their 'tapatiser' menu, which was very good, and a lovely full English breakfast next morning. Friendly service and a very interesting building.

A lovely pub/restaurant. We both had pizzas which were delicious, before watching the band in the bar. Plenty of seats, including sofas.

Stayed overnight here after spending the day at a friends wedding, hosted here. Beautiful place. They did a great job with the wedding. Absolutely beautiful. The pub/rooms were great. Very welcoming in the look & by the host. Food was lovely incl breakfast the next morning. Rooms were clean & had everything you would need. We would definitely recommend both dining & staying over. Although we were in the wedding venue, we were aware of a live band in the main pub area which is always a plus to enjoy your evening to.

We had wanted to eat here but they had a problem with the water early on but was resolved by early evening so we were able to eat here and it was very good, excellent service and extremely well presented food.
