Unfriendly & unwelcoming to strangers. So we stay strangers & didn’t return! Maybe ok for locals but not holiday makers or those just popping in. As it is the only pub in the area, we went in for maybe some food. Was 9 minutes too late for that, so settled in with drinks. Went back in the evening for drinks. Table next to us were asked to leave as they wanted to close up 1/2 hour before advertised closing time. We felt uncomfortable so left.

Sizewell is a place where fish is landed in small boats. You can buy the fresh fish direct from the fishermen. A safe option from the pretty standard menu should have been fish and chips…big mistake. This was so obviously a breaded piece of plaice from some second rate supplier and then overcooked from frozen in rancid oil. The veg curry was ok and the small serving with plenty of rice was inappropriately compensated by more than half a plate of chips. The burger was consumed with great speed by our son. Nothing new there and not sure what that means in terms of quality.

He kept saying he shut at 3 at the lalest .Then we played pool, ball got stuck and it was like it was the biggest inconvenience to sort it , so bad it was funny , worth a return visit for the landlord , so 5 for entertainment value can't rate food cause couldn't order , back in time village pub, hilarious

At first glance you can be taken back by the external and internal appearance of this pub but do not allow this to detract from what this pub is really about and that is the provision of excellent food. My wife had Suffolk ham, eggs and chips followed by the Chocolate dream ice cream and I had the Aberdeen Angus half pound burger with mature cheese and chips, followed by treacle sponge and custard. The servings were huge and neither of us could finish the first course but not so the dessert which was just too good not to. I get the feeling that all the other memu offerings would be just as good and will definitely be returning there again. Its also a nice friendly pub, full of dogs (in the bar) and people only too happy to chat. Just wish it was our local.

Walking into The Vulcan Arms is to step back in time. Low wood beams, dark paintwork, dim corners, dog friendly, a knot of ageing locals perched on bar stools swapping memories with the ageing landlord all combine to form a strangely cosy atmosphere. We booked a table in the restaurant area for an early dinner but did not have time to stay for the music which is a Friday night regular attraction with country and sixties style groups looking popular. The menu offers good solid pub grub with, surprisingly, a good range of steaks. We took a risk and both went for fillet steak asking for one rare and one medium rare. The meals turned up quite quickly on big plates with chips, salad, peas and onion rings in abundance. The steaks were a really good size, tasty, well aged, tender and were perfectly cooked to our requests so we enjoyed an excellent meal served by young and friendly staff. We decided to book for Sunday lunch and ate in the bar area because we had taken our dog with us. Although it was not really busy we did have to wait about 25 minutes for our meal (everyone booked for the same time, Trevor, the landlord explained) but it passed easily in the interesting surroundings. The full standard menu appeared to be on offer but the set meal was roast beef. Again, big plates turned up, this time laden with new potatoes, roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower with a grilled cheese topping, a big Yorkshire pudding and a very generous helping of well-cooked but tender and tasty roast beef. A good jug of first class real gravy and a dish of proper horseradish sauce completed the meal, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed and rated as very good value at less than £10.00 each. Other reviews have marked out the elderly land lord as grumpy and I think he probably could be (it’s a “privilege” of the elderly as younger folk may find out later in life) but he was fine with us and even shared a smile or three. To plagiarise that Star Trek Vulcan “it’s a pub Jim but as we used to know them”

The staff were quite friendly but inexperienced. Through the whole time I was eating my meal my palate was covered with a thick layer of grease. Don't order anything fried unless you prefer to be eating roughly 6 month old grease. The steak was boiled and consisted of 60% fat , 30% water and 10% meat. The only edible element of the menu was the jacket potatoes however, to my disappointment they still managed to fill my mouth with fat. To my surprise they also managed to make the salad indigestible. Would definitely not recommend.

We found this pub/campsite last year and despite the reviews about the landlord decided to give it a try......oh and aren't we glad we did. We stayed at the Caravan Club Certified campsite adjacent to the pub and 2 minutes walk to the beach. We have since become regular visitors as it is the perfect place to visit for a weekend camping with our dog. The pub has a lovely atmosphere, is always spotlessly clean and the food is good and wholesome as well as being great value. Trevor and his daughter work extremely hard and are always very welcoming hosts. They have live music every Friday evening and we have had the pleasure of watching Trevor himself on the guitar. Mandy is a wonderful cook and the carvery's are very very popular. All I can say is if anyone thinks Trevor is "grumpy" then you clearly have not taken the time to get to know him and witness his wonderful sense of humour. When I suggested a visit to this hostelry the look of scepticism from the group was palpable. However they were swiftly won over from the moment we crossed the threshold into this delightful establishment. The landlord, Trevor, welcomed us not as virgin visitors but as if we'd were returning regulars. The few locals propped up at the bar were similarly friendly. Several well kept pints were enjoyed with the eclectic display of memorabilia adorning the walls enthralling several members of the party. Given the time of year there were few walkers or birdwatchers but guess this can prove quite popular when the weather is more clement. Perusing the food menu the choice is extensive with a mixture of traditional pub grub and several inventive creations all using local ingredients and at very reasonable prices. Unfortunately time constraints meant did not have the chance to sample them. All in all well worth making the detour down here and hope to return soon.

Read the reviews, thought we had to pay a visit. wasn't disapointed - beer in great condition.. the so called 'Grumpy landlord' turned out to be a friendly, well informed, traditional landlord who made us welcome and provided engaging conversation... a treat. we'll definitely return next time we are in the area. Thank you.

The wife and I planned a long if leisurely walk up from Aldeburgh via Sizewell Gap and selected the Vulcan Arms as our target not knowing even if it would be open.We arrived thirsty and a little hungry to find a relaxed and friendly welcome. The pub is not trying to be gastro anything, just serving GOOD sandwiches made with GOOD bread, wholesome, hot, unfancy food and REALLY nice beer. Beers rotate but I enjoyed the Woodbridge Bure especially and would go back anytime to sample others.

Dog friendly is a plus. Landlord likes dogs but I wonder if he likes people? Mind you there is no competition in the area so he can dictate how things are done.Right outside the entrance to Sizewell power station with lots of staff going in and out but none coming here for their Monday lunch it seems. Traditional dark oak decor and a traditional pub menu from about 25 years ago. We only wanted a ham sandwich and some chips to share. I won the bet that the bread would be Chorley Wood method. Love and behold the decent gam was encased in Mothers Pride. The ordering process also included a bizarre conversation about chutney and mustard which they couldn't possibly contemplate. Also to avoid being asked awkward, sarcastic questions make sure you specify the size of the drink when ordering. Mothers Pride encased ham came with a fresh side salad and 3 Pringles on top. Chips tasted a bit strange and I think that is due to old oil being used. Lager shandy (pint) tasted a bit strange too. Wife had (half pint) soda and lime. Bill came to over £16 which seemed a bit steep but nowhere else for miles around on a Monday lunchtime in October. This pub could do do much better!Overall a slightly bizarre experience.

This is a traditional dog friendly pub serving substantial meals with a generous selection of vegetarian options. The meals we chose were excellent. All the meals on offer are quite expensive, probably reflecting the lack of nearby competition. As many others have commented, the landlord seems surly and unfriendly although we were not sure if this was fact or just his unfortunate and unintended manner. He certainly seems to love dogs so he can't be that bad.If cost is not an issue, and/or you have a dog , this pub is certainly worth a visit, if only to meet the landlord and decide for yourself whether or not he is grumpy!

We popped into the pub for a drink on our return from a walk on Sizewell beach. We were greeted well and our drinks were taken at a small table. The pub seemed very popular for food and the meals looked delicious. We will return at a later date to try them out.

We visited here twice during our 4 day visit to the area. It is a family run pub run by a father and daughter. The food was amazing and my husband had in his words one of the best he had ever eaten! I had pork knuckle with cider and apple sauce which was just as nice. Good selection of real ales with a proper pub atmosphere. Best bit about our holiday was visiting here!

We stayed with our motorhome. The pub has good beers and a good menu selection. The food was very good value as was the Caravan Club CL site. On Friday evenings there is a band on which adds atmosphere and the pub is busy. Pleasant and helpful staff who made our stay enjoyable. We would definitely return

I visited this pub on a number of occasions when I stayed at Sizewell Beach. It was a short walk from Beach View Holiday Park, where I was staying. I found it to be a well run pub with excellent beer. On the Friday night I went for dinner and the food was excellent. On Fridays there is music at the pub, I did not actually stay late enough to hear the music but it seems popular with the locals. The person running the pub is a very nice friendly man and he appears to be working very hard to make the place work.

I visit the Vulcan on a regular basis - a good pint of IPA. Other ales and lagers available. Privately owned - will open up the kitchen for just one person if a meal is required. Dog friendly WIFI also available on request. Member of the caravan club - caters for tourers. Recommended!

We have been staying on the Caravan Club L at the Vulcan for over ten years now.. The location is great, a few hundred yards from the beach and a short stagger to (or from) the pub. Sunday carvery is not to be missed and booking is advisable. General menu isnt huge but is reliable and curry night is worth a visit. Trevor keeps his (limited) range of real beers well and those who regard him as grumpy have obviously missed him playing with his band! There is entertainment most weekends and it gets pretty full.Did you know they won a national award for the new pub sign?

Happy to get somewhere on a sunday evening as most pubs stop doing meals at night, it was only the landlord there it seemed serving drinks and meals as well as looking after the locals who stared at you when you arrived, you get plenty of food but it is very basic, mum had lamb shanks and really enjoyed it think she done well but was hungry.

We were visiting friends on the caravan park and they suggested the Vulcan. The pub itself is from a time when fixtures and fittings were the real thing and there was a great atmosphere with a mix of locals and tourists. We only waited about twenty minutes for our food which was very good considering the place was packed. All the meals were piping hot and plentiful and I would recommend anyone to give it a try and to the people who complain about the landlord's attitude I would say try talking to him,we found him OK with a wicked sense of humour, give it a try.

Visited Monday and was really happy with our visit. The food was great, it was nice to see something different, there was a lot of effort put into the menu and lots of options. We ordered two soft drinks, the Mexican flatbread and fishfinger wrap, both of which were excellent and very fresh: I wouldn't be surprised if the tartare sauce was made from scratch. We sat outside with our dog and the views were lovely, toilets were clean and staff polite, I couldn't fault anything really. Will return when next in the area.

I’ve read some of the reviews and it seems that expectations have a lot to do with the comments. I know what to expect and I like it. If you want slick – don’t go. If you want real - then go. If you want a place where people go because they know each other – then go. I’ve had some good conversations about local events and places with the lady and gentleman who run it. Food and drink are fine – it might not suit everyone to see your breakfast cooked in view. Suits me fine.
