My partner and I, had lunch here, on Saturday 4th November, we had fish and chips and mushy peas, the service and staff was excellent, thank you to all involved 😀, would definitely recommend this place...

Not a great experience. Both me & a friend ordered the haddock & chips. Both pieces of our fish were awful, the batter was really tough & the fish really dry. Felt like it had either sat for a while or refried to serve. Neither of us could finish it. We were offered a new piece of fish, but didn't want that as it felt that this should have been right 1st time. Staff then handed us the bill & ignored us until we paid & left. Really poor experience & such a shame as we expected it to be so much better as was our last night in Aldeburgh & it put a dampener on that.

Really friendly staff, great food (which was tweaked to accommodate dietary needs) and reasonable prices. Pity we're not more local! Just not sure why they didn't open the windows until they were closing (it was a very hot day) but equally we didn't really feel too hot.

From entering the Upper deck diner the staff greeted us with friendly smiles, The food was excellent fresh hot an plentiful not forgetting very tasty. Desserts were not only good valve but big portions too. All in all I give The Upper Deck Diner 10/10 Staff also 10/10. Thank you we will be back😋

We visited today with my parents & teenage son. We had a little wait for a table but it wasn’t a problem at all as the sun was shining. Once seated we had our food & drink order taken, drinks arrived very promptly & food followed shortly. Staff were friendly & attentive. The cod & chips we lovely & the portion was generous. The curry sauce was the best I have ever had! Very pleased with our lunch & would recommend/revisit. :)

We came here after our first choice had too long a queue. We were not disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, the portions of fish were big and very filling. The toilet facilities were also clean and efficient. The restaurant it upstairs which means you can get a nice view of the high Street and beach. The staff were also friendly and welcoming. We will be back.

Very good quality fish and chips. We did order form the larger size part of the menu and larger it was. Both of us were too full to finish. Chips were good (as they should be) and the cod and skate were excellent (which in some places they often aren't). Service was excellent too.

Excellent fish & chips! Friendly staff and good service. What more can you ask for! We had the medium cod and chips with mushy peas which was ample.

We had haddock and chips in a bag to take and eat on the beach on a very hot evening. There was a long long queue but we thought it would be worth it as everyone raves about the fish and chips here but........the fish was tough and dry, the batter was over-cooked and the oil should have been changed. We had a couple of mouthfuls and the rest was given to the seagulls. A complete waste of money. Maybe the hype of Aldeburgh has made them drop their standards?

If you’re in Aldeburgh and fancy fish and chips, look no further than the Upper Deck. A no frills restaurant above a chip shop with the friendliest staff and best fish and chips. You won’t be disappointed!

We had cycled to Aldeburgh from nearby Leiston on a day that was miserable with rain threatening. Disappointing because we had hopped to have Fish and Chips on the beach. But the Upper Deck was a good alternative. We were given a friendly welcome; the fish and chips were excellent and it was nice and warm inside.

Our first visit since the Covid lock downs and we were very pleased with our lunch: once again they proved the worth of reports of their being the best Fish and Chips. Service with a smile. I give them five stars for today, that is five stars for a quality Fish and Chip restaurant, not a five star hotel. Meticulously cleaned between customers, and a good cup of tea to drink, plus an excellent crumble as a dessert.

The restaurant room above the fish and chip shop is perfectly pleasant - light, spacious and airy. We have eaten here many times over the years and have been happy to return. However on the last two occasions it was noticeable that fish portions are getting smaller, disguised by generous quantities of batter. The fish was then over cooked, leaving it very dry. We will not be back.

The service was very cheerful and helpful, and the price was reasonable. Unfortunately the food was second rate. They have medium and large fish, which should be small and medium. The batter was good but the fish was so very dry. The burgers are apparently quite good. I had a battered sausage which was ok, but the onion rings were straight out of an Iceland freezer bag, not home made. Maybe try somewhere different.

I visited on my own today & felt extremely comfortable. I had haddock & chips which was beautiful. My only complaint was that only malt vinegar was available ( which I hate ) I asked if I could have some from the chip shop downstairs...

After hearing how good the fish and chips were, my family went to lunch, Chips not good tasted like frozen ones and they went cold quickly and hard, The cod was full of bones. Wont go again.

We queued to get in as this is the only place you can sit in and enjoy fish and chips. It was well worth the wait as the food was fab and the staff were lovely and very efficient

There were 6 of us, and we fancied a sit-down lunch. Can’t book, so we made our way upstairs. Obviously, we wanted to sit together (all tables for 4 really), but the rather bossy waitress set us out as a not-very-sociable 4+2. I re-arranged the chairs to a 3+3 (boys & girls), and she copped the right hump. I could quite easily have left at that point. Suddenly, another table became free, in the middle, so we all squeezed round it. We all enjoyed our fish (5 cod and a haddock); mostly large and a couple of mediums. Soft drinks only on the menu, but you can take your own wine for a £3.50 corkage charge. Food was better than average, but they need to chill out a bit, no matter how busy they may be.

We have just had a family meal at This restaurant and it will be our last! Sorry to say after many visits here We were Greeted by a waitress who wasn't at all welcoming.

This used to be a treat on a family day to the seaside. Twice since Easter we’ve visited and both occasions the staff have been rude and totally uninterested in the customer!

For anyone who has read my recent reviews, I tend to have a bee in my bonnet over these takeaway places with a "same business" restaurant that serves exactly the same food but doubles the price. I get the whole "convenience" element, but there's reasonable pricing and then there's greed.

I just can’t understand the recent negative reviews?

Been to the Upper Deck before and was pleased, however, on Monday 29 July, ordered medium haddock and chips with mushy peas.

We went for lunch on a Wednesday lunch time one of first seated . Did not have to wait long for meal large & medium Fish & Chips with mushy peas . Pleasant waitress very polite young lady .

We always enjoy fish and chips whilst on holiday in Aldeburgh but the food we bought from this place was the worst ever. The fish was truly dreadful. Dried fish, minute portions. This has to be the pits in British fish and chip catering. The owners greed is matched by their appalling offerings, an apology for our great national dish.

Our first experience of the alleged famous fish n chips, Our large portion of cod & chips(takeaway) was a bit hit and miss, the fish was nice but there was a lot of batter, and for a large meal the chips was smallish in size with quite a lot of bits, will try again sometime, maybe just an off day.

Only small, but serves excellent, fresh cooked fish and chips. The take away is downstairs, so this is perfect if you wish to sit down to eat.

Having had take away from the chip shop down stairs I expected the most wonderful food as before.

We were a big group and i think all three chip shops in town are owned by the same person so seem to overlap in opening times. We sat upstairs and it was a good look with nautical themed objects. However I’ve had better beach side fish and chips. A lot of bones in the cod and not sure how it was filleted. Scampi and pies looked amazing. Drinks rather limited and expensive. Chips were a bit oily. Service felt a bit cold but maybe that’s because we were taking up a lot of space. It was good but not a perfect five yet

We thought we would finish off a lovely sunny day in Aldeburgh with fish and chips on the beach, such a disappointment at 6 o clock it was basically haddock, no choice, no saveloys and awful chips, all three portions were scraps and they tasted as If they had been cooked in old oil, the service was not great one girl at least managed to smile, the other was extremely grumpy, just not good enough!

Never seen a larger portion of Haddock and chips! Arrived less than 5 mins after ordering and was cooked to perfection. Good drinks and substantial puddings but we couldn’t contemplate them. Hard to do well but these guys managed it.

An exceptionally marvellous restaurant, but it is a victim of its own success. The quality of the food is the best you will ever find. However, it is most unfortunate that you have to build your appetite by waiting outside because the Upper Deck is remarkably small. However, things could be better managed if the waiting staff were a bit more polite and accommodating and strategic in their seating. Diners tend to hog their tables, way after finishing their meal, albeit oblivious or carelessly selfish in ganging around whilst there are people waiting. I have seen 2 people sat at tables that could seat 4. I know that diners can't be urged or hustled out, but there must be something they can do to improve this. Service is quick but the waitresses can tend to be a bit uppity, prissy and abrasive. Yet, I thoroughly recommended this place.

4 of us went for lunch. Lovely cafe and very friendly staff. Fish & chips were mediocre. Pies were terrible - the pastry was totally inedible - obviously been microwaved. Worst pies we have ever had.

We went out for the day and of course a nice day by the seaside meant walking along eating chips! I'm not that fond of takeaway chips but have to say they were beautifully crisp and hot. Great!

It was very busy when we arrived so we left it for an hour and returned for a late lunch. It was easy to find a table then.

We love it here... have been visiting for over 20 years, a few times per year and I do believe the same lovely lady has been running it for all that time. Efficient service, fabulous food and always a very happy atmosphere. We are happy to queue, it’s always worth the wait.

Spent last Saturday in Aldeburgh, hadn't been there for years and had forgotten just how expensive some food and drink outlets there are. The Upper deck however does buck this trend had an excellent very large portion of cod and chips and a cup of tea whilst my partner had fishcake mushy peas and a coffee, and it certianly didn't "break the bank" in terms of cost, Food was delicious lovely pot of tea, nice filter coffee for partner, and she loved the fishcake, so all in all aplace we shall visit again.

Very quick, efficient and friendly service and the fish was fine but nothing above average I’m afraid. Unfortunately the chips were pale, not crispy and somehow dry rather than tasting fried. I expected great fish and chips reading the reviews and knowing of Aldeburgh’s reputation for fish and chips but left disappointed. Now if they had been double fried and golden and crispy or maybe cooked in beef dripping I would been more than happy. It’s not difficult to cook great chips! Sorry.

Great idea - either fabulous fish and chips to take away, or fabulous fish and chips to eat upstairs in a comfortable restaurant. Very quick and friendly service - sent from downstairs on a ‘dumb waiter’ - good fun.

Another great fish and chip restaurant in Aldeburgh. this one offers either a take out service or tables in the upstairs restaurant - always a good option when the weather is "bracing".

We often up sticks and head to the Norfolk or Suffolk coat on a whim. So in early January we did just that. After a bracing walk, we headed to the Upper Deck. We got there at 12:00 and already several tables had been taken. The three of us had fish and chips, which were very good. The service was fantastic, with happy staff working really hard and they were very efficient. No room for puds. Simple, clean and tasty.

Very busy managed by one waitress would seated people ,took orders,cleared tables ,served everyone and took payments as well,all with a smile on her face,absolutely amazing and the food was good as well.

Out for the day and we decided to pop into The Upper Deck for lunch. In fairness, this is our usual port of call when we are in this area and it never fails to please! Excellent quality fish and chips cooked to perfection with lovely friendly staff. Not much more to say really other than keep doing just what you are doing! See you again soon!

I've been eating fish & chips from the famous Aldeburgh fish & chip shop for almost 50 years, but oddly, had never tried the Upper Deck, which is also run by the Cooney family. But it was too cold to sit on the sea wall so we tried the Upper Deck.

You can't beat fish & chips from Aldeburgh. Fresh fish & great batter. Prices are good for the quality of the product.

The title of the review sums it up great fish and chips as fresh as you can get. We had Cod, Haddock and Skate they were all excellent as was the chips and mushy peas. Worth visiting Aldeburgh for!

I now live in Australia so cannot get Skate. As soon as I get home for a holiday I am at the Upper Deck!

We arrived in Aldeburgh at 3:30pm to find most food establishments had finished service, those still serving were really busy, the upper deck was not our first choice but the only option for two hungry travellers , we both ordered the mid size portions with a soft drink, the fish and chips were of good quality and very tasty, service was quick and friendly, we left feeling happy and well fed, well done the upper deck,

They do a great trade, really very busy. Go for the middle sized portion as I think it's the best value, the larger one I had seemed no bigger than the middle size my wife had, just on a bigger plate.

My wife and I dined here last Friday. Friendly and efficient waitress service. Our order was delivered from the downstairs takeaway surprisingly quickly. We ordered the predictable - medium cod, chips and mushy peas with bread and butter and tea. Being aficionados of this traditional British fayre I am happy to say that the quality of our meal was excellent. Little sign of oil or grease. The cod was fresh and flaky encased in delicious, crispy batter and the chip portions were just right. £20 for the two of us. You come away from a meal like that smiling. Thank you "Upper Deck"!

We enjoyed a fantastic cod and chips meal. Everything was tasty, hot, well cooked and brought to our table by a friendly waitress incredibly quickly. With a bill for 5 under £50 including drinks I can't fault it.

Worth the wait as it fills up quickly but serves delicious fish and chips. Excellent quick service too.

Went on coach trip last week and was really looking forward to fish and chips for lunch. We ended up in the Upper Deck, busy 'cos weather not good outside. Got table, I swear the woman who served us was Sybil Fawlty all smiles which switched off as soon as she'd taken the order. The fish was so small I could hardly find it in this really hard batter and the chips appeared as reheated and were insipid and not freshly cooked.

Doors opened at 5 but there was already a long queue for the Upper Deck as well as the take away. When we got upstairs to the restaurant all tables taken. But as there were 2 of us and some tables seating 4 only had 2 at them we said we were prepared to share if anyone would let us join them. We joined a lovely lady and her son. Even if this not happened and we had to wait it would have been worth it. Really good meal and very friendly staff.

Be prepared to form an orderly queue here at the Upper Deck as demand is most definitely outstripping supply! That said we only had to wait 10-15 minutes for a table in the height of the holiday season 2018 such is the effiency of the service here. Really nice food served with a smile and uber quick. Average prices £7.80 for cod and chips and the same for scampi and chips. Side of mushy peas at £1.30 and soft drinks at just over £1 each so total was £19.20 for two of us excluding optional service/tip. Clean surroundings with Stokes condiments as a bonus (always a plus in my book). Well done to management and staff.

We had a fish and chips lunch here, one Mid-Shipmans Cod and one Admirals Cod (medium and large) and mushy peas!

On a sunday always ensure you arrive around 1145 so you are first when the doors open for the restaurant.

After having queued waiiting for this restaurant to open , which is something I’ve never done before, I was most definitely not disappointed with a lovely tea and great service

Just as good as the other fish and chip shop they run in Aldeburgh. Fish cooked to order, nice chips, very good service and really enjoyable when eaten on a bench looking out to sea.

When we first went past they were queuing outside the shop but by the time we had parked the car up we managed to get straight in. Not much of a wait. Ordered large fish and chips. It was delicious and very much enjoyed by us both. Plus they serve good portion pots of stokes ketchup which is a plus and went well with the chips.

No visit to Aldeburgh would be complete without having the best fish and chips in East Anglia.

From an earlier review, I suggested that standards were slipping at this flagship fish and chip restaurant. I took a small party there last week and I am pleased to report that the meal was superb. The fish was beautifully fresh and cooked to perfection and chips were of good quality. I found out that one could order a small portion of the latter which saved waste and a bit off the bill. As ever the service was quick and very friendly. Highly recommended!

The fish and chips here is excellent and the ability to dine in is a real plus. The service was good, and we felt lucky to get a table as it was busy. The only downside is the lack of facilities for young babies/toddlers - e.g. no high-chairs etc. To be fair this is made very clear and the place is small, but it doesn't make things easy to manage a toddler on your lap when eating fish and chips. That is a minor issue though when the food is so tasty.

Great fish and chips over the Bank Holiday. I think it’s owned by the same people as the shop at the far end of the high street but honestly the queues are shorter and it tastes the same. Grab a haddock and chips (and a wally of course) to share and walk out to the beach and sit on the sea wall and enjoy - heaven. Mind the seagulls though !

You’d think that Fish and Chips were simply Fish and Chips. Not so. This place, over all the years we’ve been visiting Aldeburgh, has consistently provided non greasy, superbly tasty, perfectly cooked plates of fish and chips. This is the only time in the whole year that we have a family fish and chips meal, it is one of the many highlights of our time here in the town. The art of this excellence is simple; straightforward cooking in an immaculate kitchen with fresh oil and a skillful confidence earned over many years of cooking this signature dish of Aldeburgh. I’m looking forward to our return already!

Lovely fish, chips, mushy peas with bread and butter. We had regular size and it was just right but the large size fish was huge. The restaurant was nice and clean and the staff were friendly.

We were fighting a cold east wind and found this welcoming little restaurant. The staff are efficient and helpful and the food was delicious. Cod was fresh, and the chips perfectly cooked . I would recommend it although I expect that it gets very popular in good weather.

I love coming to the Upper Deck. The fish is always scrupulously fresh with a light and crispy batter and the chops are what you'd expect them to be....brilliantly British. Everything is perfect but I must be objective about the customer service. Whilst the ladies are attentive but I would encourage them to be a bit more respectful and not be as complacent as they appear by treating customers as passing fodder rather than valued guests. Furthermore,mother managing of seating customers appropriate to the tables should be better. It is small and tight upstairs but excercising more thought in seating a couple at a table for 4 leaving groups waiting isn't ideal. Otherwise, well done

We visit Aldeburgh every year and always look forward to the exquisite fish and chips. We thought we would visit the Upper Deck to ‘sit in’ when friends came to visit for the day. Whilst the haddock and cod was once again excellent the service was not. We have two small children under 4 and frankly they were not welcomed. Buggies made to be left in the alley way outside, no high chairs and a look received from waiting staff each time one of them made a noise or dropped some food was like we had brought wild animals in to the restaurant. Rolling eyes, sighs and general unwelcoming behaviour spoilt what should be a comforting experience. If kids are not welcome then don’t put kids portions on the menu. We’ll stick to take away next time.....

No visit to Aldeburgh is a real visit unless the best fish and chips in the world are tasted. This company produces the lightest batter, firm fish and nice crunchy chips. However, Winter is not the time to eat it while walking along the sea front. The Upper Deck is a nice, compact, restaurant serving the same delicacy but on plates and with the use of a knife and fork. Friendly service, large portions for the price. A lovely atmosphere.
