The Upper Deck. in Suffolk Coastal

On Friday 11th October, my wife and me were looking forward to our fish and chips at lunchtime. We ordered 2 medium haddock and one portion of chips.The haddock was very small and mainly batter.The cost of this meal was £25, our local chippie charges around £18 for 2 pieces of large fish and a large portion of chips.We were very disappointed as we have been eating there each time we visit. Not next time we come to Aldeburgh.

You've got to get your takeaway fish and chips here.....we went today and the staff were absolutely brilliant and so friendly. The quality ,taste and portion size of the takeaway fish and chips was fantastic.... don't miss out.

Been travelling to Suffolk for many years and always enjoyed visiting The Upper Deck. Unfortunately on this occasion the haddock was seriously overcooked and the batter was way beyond crispy whilst the chips were unable! No future plans on revisiting!

Chips and peas were great but the fish was poor. My wife's haddock seemed to have been double battered and so was really overcooked which was a shame as the fish in the middle was obviously fresh. My fish was slightly better however we will not be returning!! Very disappointed!!

Great for a fish and chips supper without the queue. Simple table service, fresh from the main chippy.

Wafer thin cod in a batter 5 times thicker. It was then over cooked that the ends of the cod was as hard as the batter. The cod was replaced, only slightly better, very greasy. Chips on the other hand were undercooked, looking rather pale.

Always rated the Upper Deck highly in the past but was rather disappointed this time. The fish was overcooked and the batter so hard it couldn't be eaten without picking it up and crunching it like pork crackling. The chips were plentiful and tasty and the service good. However, the place was incredibly noisy - not the fault of the owners. A case of many people talking and few listening, I think.

Good quality food served with a smile by a cheerful and friendly waitress. A crisp batter on the fish and crunchy chips. Thank you.

Haddock and chips excellent. Had medium size, but plenty of chips and tasty haddock. Staff were friendly. Gets very busy.

After not been able to attend upper deck for a couple of years . It was so refreshing to turn up and greeted by one of our favorite members of staff Phillippa who remembered obviously one of there favourite couple lol.... Then Rachel appeared with equally a big smile and greeted us how nice to be remembered by lovely staff. Not been to this place for a few years but things don't change. The food is great and the service is amazing. We were greeted like old friends, so nice to be remembered by Phillipa and Rachel who came up from the chip shop specially ro say hello. We will be back again

Love this place, haven't been for a few years and me and hubby were welcome back by Phillippa. Rachel also came up to say hello from the chippy downstairs. So nice to be remembered. The staff are great and the food is great.

Excellent fish & chips, very quick service, and a lovely intimate atmosphere. The downside of that, of course, is there will be a long wait for a table. But that was not a problem for us. 😊 5pm Tuesday after Easter 🐣

We arrived in Aldeburgh on a mild, sunny February lunchtime to see the walls and benches along the sea front, lined with people enjoying a lunchtime treat of fish and chips, They looked and smelled divine. Our choice of dinner was decided. We soon tracked down the shop and returned that night to enjoy the best fish and chips that we have ever tasted. The haddock was fresh and tasty, the batter, light and not greasy in any way. Chips were perfect. Very pleasant staff. 10/10.

Treated ourselves to a sit-down fish and chip lunch as a treat and a change from Christmas food, and we weren’t disappointed. Lovely staff, lovely food, excellent place to eat. We had the more modestly-sized cod and chips which turned out to be just right. Light, crispy batter, flaky white fish, very good chips. Possibly the least greasy fish and chips I can recall, in sensibly sized portions.

Sadly the chips were dry and warm rather than hot . Such a shame won’t be going back

Popped in without a booking and seated had two adult meals and two cabin boy meals filled is all up. Was the best fish and chips I've ever had

Not a great experience. Both me & a friend ordered the haddock & chips. Both pieces of our fish were awful, the batter was really tough & the fish really dry. Felt like it had either sat for a while or refried to serve. Neither of us could finish it. We were offered a new piece of fish, but didn't want that as it felt that this should have been right 1st time. Staff then handed us the bill & ignored us until we paid & left. Really poor experience & such a shame as we expected it to be so much better as was our last night in Aldeburgh & it put a dampener on that.

Really friendly staff, great food (which was tweaked to accommodate dietary needs) and reasonable prices. Pity we're not more local! Just not sure why they didn't open the windows until they were closing (it was a very hot day) but equally we didn't really feel too hot.

My wife and i had cod and chips they were fantastic. Service was friendly and promp in a lovely setting could not fault anything about meal service or experiamce. If you want lovely fish and chips in great place this is it

From entering the Upper deck diner the staff greeted us with friendly smiles, The food was excellent fresh hot an plentiful not forgetting very tasty. Desserts were not only good valve but big portions too. All in all I give The Upper Deck Diner 10/10 Staff also 10/10. Thank you we will be back😋

Soggy fish and pale soggy chips. Nice service, though. They need to use a crispy batter like other places do - such as the Harbour Inn, Southwold, who serve plump fish in piping hot crispy batter and wonderful triple cooked chips with homemade tartar sauce. Disappointed with the Upper deck - feels like a conveyor belt without care for quality and we won't return.

This is one of the best(if not THE Best) Fish & Chips I have ever had. The quality is next to none and the batter is fantastic. Everytime we go, we ask for scraps and it is phenomenal. The staff are lovely and this is very family friendly. Highly recommend you get there as it opens because this establishment is in such high demand. The fantastic thing is despite being so popular, you never feel like the staff are trying to rush you as they truly value your experience there. I’ll be back ASAP with the family for sure!

We regularly use The Upper Deck Diner for good quality fish & chips & a decent cup of tea. The food is consistently well cooked, with a nice light crispy batter on the fish. The staff are friendly & efficient. Prices seem to have gone up by more than inflation since this time last year, but we have to live with that.

Nice place with good fish and chips

We visited today with my parents & teenage son. We had a little wait for a table but it wasn’t a problem at all as the sun was shining. Once seated we had our food & drink order taken, drinks arrived very promptly & food followed shortly. Staff were friendly & attentive. The cod & chips we lovely & the portion was generous. The curry sauce was the best I have ever had! Very pleased with our lunch & would recommend/revisit. :)

Very efficient and prompt service, despite it being lunchtime (12.45) and very busy. We were served our cod and chips, with mushy peas and a pot of tea within 3 minutes of entering the small but comfortable upstairs restaurant. The meal was cooked to perfection and made even more enjoyable by the addition of Stokes sauce sachets on the table.

Just dropped in on the off chance and left thoroughly satisfied! Very friendly staff and lovely food.

Good fresh quality fish, and service is efficient and friendly. But fish is very small for the price.

We came here after our first choice had too long a queue. We were not disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, the portions of fish were big and very filling. The toilet facilities were also clean and efficient. The restaurant it upstairs which means you can get a nice view of the high Street and beach. The staff were also friendly and welcoming. We will be back.

On a freezing cold day in Aldeburgh we had delicious fish and chips served with a smile by the super-efficient waitress.

Very good quality fish and chips. We did order form the larger size part of the menu and larger it was. Both of us were too full to finish. Chips were good (as they should be) and the cod and skate were excellent (which in some places they often aren't). Service was excellent too.

99% I would have loved to say 100%, but I thought the food wasn't cooked fresh and was a little on the cool side. I also like my chips better cooked. But I am being really really picky!

We had haddock and chips in a bag to take and eat on the beach on a very hot evening. There was a long long queue but we thought it would be worth it as everyone raves about the fish and chips here but........the fish was tough and dry, the batter was over-cooked and the oil should have been changed. We had a couple of mouthfuls and the rest was given to the seagulls. A complete waste of money. Maybe the hype of Aldeburgh has made them drop their standards?

I went here today and had the plaice and chips. They were both cooked to perfection. Locally sourced sauces and drinks too! Service was excellent: a warm welcome and great throughout. Definitely the best fish and chips! Your life will be a better place if you eat here!

Trying to plough through large haddock and chips. It hasn't just been over cooked it has been annihilated. My wife's fish is brown inside and is no longer a fillet more a mass of whitey-brown bits. I will not come back. We should have realised when our order came extremely quickly. Faster than a microwave meal. We are totally dissatisfied with this place. The food is pre-cooked in readiness for a busy service and has sat...then flashed again through the Fryer. I am hard pressed Not to take my wife's 2and offering away to show to an EHO, part of her fish looks jellyish in texture. Clearly, the chef here does not know what he/she is doing and the EHO needs to come and check that good practice is being observed. As my wife stated, this is first and foremost a fish and chip restaurant and they cannot get this, their most basic function correct

We decided to east in rather than queue outside for takeaway, and I’m so glad we did! The Upper Deck Diner was spotlessly clean, the food was delicious as expected, and the service was fantastic!

We had cycled to Aldeburgh from nearby Leiston on a day that was miserable with rain threatening. Disappointing because we had hopped to have Fish and Chips on the beach. But the Upper Deck was a good alternative. We were given a friendly welcome; the fish and chips were excellent and it was nice and warm inside.

Our first visit since the Covid lock downs and we were very pleased with our lunch: once again they proved the worth of reports of their being the best Fish and Chips. Service with a smile. I give them five stars for today, that is five stars for a quality Fish and Chip restaurant, not a five star hotel. Meticulously cleaned between customers, and a good cup of tea to drink, plus an excellent crumble as a dessert.

The restaurant room above the fish and chip shop is perfectly pleasant - light, spacious and airy. We have eaten here many times over the years and have been happy to return. However on the last two occasions it was noticeable that fish portions are getting smaller, disguised by generous quantities of batter. The fish was then over cooked, leaving it very dry. We will not be back.

The service was very cheerful and helpful, and the price was reasonable. Unfortunately the food was second rate. They have medium and large fish, which should be small and medium. The batter was good but the fish was so very dry. The burgers are apparently quite good. I had a battered sausage which was ok, but the onion rings were straight out of an Iceland freezer bag, not home made. Maybe try somewhere different.

Gorgeous fish and chips, nicely furnished benches upstairs. Slightly more expensive than our local Chippy and just got the large cod and chips but they were well worth it. With Stoke's sauces and condiments at the table. Be prepared to queue though, although we went on a Tuesday in November, it was half term and we were lucky to get there as it opened.

Have visited this restaurant many times and food has always been absolutely fantastic. But on this occasion it was not up to usual standard. Hubby's fish was really greasy. I had a skate and it was just batter and bones. Such a disappointment.
