Good beer and atmosphere. A proper pub, not a corporate Weatherspoonery bar come eat station. Run by people not 'staff'. Has an air of authenticity. Pleasantly quirky with all sorts of 'stuff' and people, a 'Public House'. Will be back.

Best pub in Suffolk in my opinion. Great atmosphere, dog friendly and delicious proper pub food. We had chicken stew, fish chowder and steak and ale stew, each served with lots of fresh bread and butter. I don’t drink beer so can’t comment on the beers but my friends enjoyed them. It’s a quirky, fun place to spend an evening and the Sunday music events are great too!

Just a 10 min walk from Heathside lodges is The Star a proper village pub, presumably freehouse, with a nice grassy beer garden with field views, colourful exterior lights at night and a quirky and eclectically decorated lounge full of antiques car memorabilia and the humourously obscure ornaments and pictures inside. To the other side if tue pub are some small dining rooms beside it which are neutrally decorated and inviting. So something for every taste if quirky isn't your thing! Open 12-3 & 6-9pm while we were here, the owners run this place with their heart and soul. The regular locals gave us a smile as did the bar staff when we walked in. The owners clearly love their beers which are sourced from some smaller local breweries around Suffolk such as the fabulous Green Jack brewery (the Golden ale and Trawlerman Bitter are both superb!) as well as the occasional one less mainstream from Adnams (instead of the usual ghost ship) so this time I visited it was Adnams / Five Points co-lab, Distant fields which was tasty and very well kept indeed. Theres also a nice cider on handpul along with the more well-known lagers and ciders on tap. I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat but I spoke to a couple next to us who had the Game broth (Venison Partridge and Pheasant) and they said it was delicious. We visited this pub and lodges 4 years ago during the autumn covid period of 2020 and I'd long wanted to return in normal circumstances ever since. Some places and landlords make a nice impression and Carl & his wife (sorry didn't catch your name) were both very friendly as they were back in trickier times when they served us outside in a marquee. We look forward to returning again to the lodge site next year (which is also an excellent base) and I hope to have more than just the one night in The Star next year. Regards, Matt & Leesa Nottm. P.s thanks for the glass Carl 😉

This was awful experience. The menu that is on the website does not exsist. The menu in the pub is soup, garlic mushrooms, kippers, hot smoked salmon and a few desserts and that is it. You also have to be prepared to put up with barking dogs . This was the worse experience of a lunch that I have ever had. I would recommend everyone to give this pub a miss. They should also be made to take down the website menu.

Visited The Star whilst staying in Wenhaston on a mini-break discovering the area between Southwold and Aldeburgh. We walked into the pub to a very warm welcome by everyone behind the bar. We had a fabulous home cooked meal . Started with chicken liver pate on sourdough bread with onion chutney and tasty mushroom soup . The pork and cider casserole was beautifully cooked and very tasty , generous portions. Good honest food at its best. The beer was excellent as well. Locals very friendly and all you could hear was laughter and people chatting to each other. This is how local pubs should be about. The pub and hospitality sector have many pressures on them and money is tight for everyone but would ask people to support these local little gems . One of the best pubs we have been in for many years. Thank you for a lovely evening. Hope we will return in the future,

What a gem of a pub! Shhh… but a treasure too good not to share. It has excellent tasty home cooked food, good beer on tap, great service and authentic atmosphere in the most eclectic of settings!!! What’s not to like where the landlords welcome you with warmth and dogs & humans add to the cosy, convivial setting. Be warned though, it closes at 9pm, to me it suggests a caring boss, looking out for the good health of her staff & punters alike. Don’t waste your time, seek it out, soonest -alas, we discovered the star inn on our last day in Suffolk - although we will return as it left a lasting impression.

We were there with 13 of us in total including 2 children it was a day that all families have to do and part from a loved one. I can’t comment enough on how good they were we all pre ordered children meals suppled food was delivered with care and understanding we sat over 3 tables which was in one room in the bar area not shoved in a back room miles from anyone and cold who has had that . Drinks were served with pleasure and warmth. I didn’t pay attention to prices at the bar but walking through the bar I heard someone say they charge £6 a Beer some were I’m not one to go in pubs now but £6 is not uncommon I told apart from whitherspoons . The food was very good and tasty and you won’t go away hungry. Out of the blue when we were in car park they gave us a little treat to eat on beach Thankyou so much for that it was totally unexpected but so well received . You helped us so much to make the best of a bad day Thankyou.

One of the few "proper pubs" left. A great atmosphere, characterful interior, friendly, efficient bar staff, hearty food and good beer. A pleasant contrast to bland, formulaic pubs that are now really restaurants. The opening hours were a bit strange... closing at 9pm on a Friday, at which point the pub was quite busy.

The pub had a lovely log fire on the go which was nice on a cold evening, but we were sat in the back room which wasn't very warm. I felt the pub seemed a bit clicky with locals. We ordered food from the menu, most things a little different to the usual pub fayre. We noticed a few dishes were removed from the boards whilst we waited so this was then limiting the choice for later diners. The food did look nice when it came out, but could of been a bit hotter, and seasonal veg was a small spoon of red cabbage and 3, yes 3, green beans! For what they were charging for the food I was expecting a little more, vegetables are afterall the cheapest items on the plate. For this reason I would not return.

Lovely, village, pub, just off the A12, a few miles from Southwold, well worth searching out if you want to support a talented, young chef. Shall we say ‘old fashioned’, in sense has a warming, open fire, ‘stuff’ all over the place - need to ‘fight’ your way around a stack of logs to get in front door - with a friendly, country, welcome. Wall mounted menu of interesting dishes with broad culinary influences at sensible prices. All were judged tasty - ours and people on adjoining tables ! However, get there early, as some sell out quickly ! Decent, kept ales from local breweries as well as some ‘staples’, even has Orangina ! On our list to re-visit when in area.

We were a little hesitant about coming here for dinner because our impression was that this is a pub that focusses on real ale, rather than food. But as we were staying nearby, we decided to give it a try. What a great decision! The real ale was superb. Very well kept. A choice of three ales on tap and they were all great. The food was outstanding. There was a very good selection of starters, mains and desserts, with some pub classics and many unusual dishes, using local ingredients. Every dish we tried was delicious - so much so that we returned the following evening. The highlights were the pork cheek stew with dumplings, the honeycomb cheesecake and the ginger & caramel puddings.

Visiting the Star Inn is rather like visiting distant relatives, whose reluctance to accommodate you has thawed just enough to invite you over. But they know how to provide the ingredients for a great time. And their place is fascinating and ruggedly individual - bedecked with an eclectic mix of objets trouvés assembled decades ago. They quietly bring you a plate of sea bass, mash and samphire, and a glass of golden ale. It’s all totally delicious! Wow! Uncle glides around in his shorts, keeping the hospitality moving with cheerful grace and swishy hair. Auntie, also with good hair, is attentive but something is bothering her, she’s a little snappy … you feel like it might be your fault. ————- A great and idiosyncratic pub with excellent beer and food, but bring your sense of humour. This ain’t Weatherspoon’s.

On Friday 11th October, my wife and me were looking forward to our fish and chips at lunchtime. We ordered 2 medium haddock and one portion of chips. The haddock was very small and mainly batter. The cost of this meal was £25, our local chippie charges around £18 for 2 pieces of large fish and a large portion of chips. We were very disappointed as we have been eating there each time we visit. Not next time we come to Aldeburgh.

Went today for Sunday roast. We had Pork and chicken, plenty of roasted potato, vegetables and cauliflower cheese, All bathed in scrumptious gravy. Served with the warmest of smiles by Sophie & Charlie. After the service was finished, Jane , owner and great cook came to say hi and we had a lovely chat. Also met friends from their Pub Quiz, (Wednesdays, every other week) . We planned future meet ups. What is not to like !!!!

Our first visit! It hopefully won't be the last. The food was so obviously home made. The carvery excellent. Lovely atmosphere, very friendly and comfortable. No service charge added to the bill!!! Our own discretion!! The owner/ manager not sure which was great...eye on the ball and good to his young staff. We got Harry (in training) all smiles and a delight.

What a great pub. Walked from Minsmere. Happy to accept muddy boots and dogs. Had a lovely welcome and a good lunch. Bar staff happy to provide tasters of beers before buying. Exceptionally clean toilets. Would recommend
