What a great pub, staff are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. They allow dogs 🐕 good selection of beer's, not far off the canal, so great place to stop off from your walk.

Really nice traditional pub with a decent selection of real ales a pool table a dart board nice friendly vibe from thestaff and other punters . Perfect pub to pop whilst on a walk along the canal and dodge the rain. I'm sure I'll be back soon :)

Great bottle of New Zealand S. Blanc....excellent choice of coffee. The landlord is very friendly and super efficient. The group of Shanty singers...The Landlubbers.....were great fun...as always.

Decent bar this, worth a visit if in the area, staff really friendly and welcoming, we call in usually during a monthly pub walk from another local pub, dog friendly and decent enough selection of drinks.

Our local pub, although we don't get to visit as often as I'd like. A cosy traditional pub serving a great pint and some good food. Children are allowed until 5pm and dog walkers generally get a friendly welcome from the locals who like to give well behaved (and preferably clean) pets some attention. An outdoor drinking area caters for those wishing to smoke, enjoy the sun or sit with dogs who might have been for a dip in the canal. Local bands often perform live music on a weekend which makes for something a little different that the likes of a Wetherspoons can't provide I'd recommend it to friends.

A band was playing so the atmosphere was great. Friendly staff, quick service and reasonably priced.

The barkeep was Marvin friendly it was the first time I've been into this pub and I was made to feel welcome

Most miserable bar woman we've ever come accross. In this day and age you would think that a pub would be grateful of customers however this is not the case here! Rude, unwelcoming bar attendant who clearly was put out by having to serve customers. Even the locals have advised this pub has gone downhill. If your thinking of taking children I wouldnt bother. Although there is a sign saying they are welcome in reality there anything but welcome! What a shame!

We stopped on the canal and came up for a pint. I asked about food and was told they don't do food, but there were free pork and stuffing baps tonight. Right good they were, too! They also had an interesting gin menu but we were too tired to try that! Friendly place, with a few sociable dogs in evidence. If we hadn't been working locks all day, we'd probably have stayed longer.

We pop in a few times a week for a quick drink. Really like it, friendly cosy feeling about the place. Miss the veggie kebabs. Cute dog with one eye ! 👁️😃

Stopped in for a pint a a bit if lunch after a long walk with my dog. Bar person was standing behind the bar and reading a book. Made me feel like I had interrupted her when I asked for a drink. Sign said food was available; pies and sandwiches.Cold pies were in a mini fridge to serve yourself. No offer of a plate or napkin was forthcoming. Pie ok but won't be back for more. Surly staff need training to be customer friendly.

Great proper pub, brilliant ambiance. Decking area is fantastic to sit out in when it’s sunny even with a busy road next to it.

1st visit very nice clean pub great decking area for when the sun is shining! Only thing that let this place down was the rude barmaid we just found her abrupt and not very polite would of been nice of her to smile and be welcoming when she served us all.

Great local sports bar. Excellent selection of music. Friendly staff. Don't go expecting a gastro pub experience, watch the game instead.

Not cheap, not overly expensive. Just popped in for a Coors £3.60 Didn't taste right, maybe the lines need cleaning. Seemed like a friendly cosy pub though so I won't​ score it lower.

Went for breakfast to watch the Lions in there first match. Was fab. Defo worth a visit and I believe open for all the forth coming games

Having finished a 30km walk o'er hill and dale, we decided to stop off the the Vol' for a cheeky glass of wine as a reward for our efforts. What we got were really friendly staff, a nice welcome and our Frenchie was okay to pop in too! Didn't eat but the menu looked decent and well priced too. The wine however was delicious!

Really good gammon and poached egg from the specials menu, best that I've had for a long time. And a nice pint of Blond Witch to go with it. Fabulous pub and as good ad ever.

Always great, we love it here, as I've said before in previous reviews we usually eat here once a week. My point is you can't say that about many places. Jx

Friendly, great value, uber tasty. Recommend the beef baguette. Chris the owner always has a smile and a friendly word of welcome. Even for me!

What a great place to have lunch following a walk along the Calder and Hebble Canal. We received a warm welcome, muddy boots and dog included. Lunch was amazing, reasonably priced and with lots of vegetarian choices. Service was quick and with a smile. The real ale was well kept and served and there were plenty to choose from. The surroundings were brilliant, the open fire so inviting on a cold day, everything was clean and well cared for. We will definitely call in again - soon! Thank you to the landlord - job well done.

We can't stop having lunch here. When we just need a really good spot of lunch we turn up at The Vol. I'll admit, am in a bit of rut where the meat and potato pie is concerned and can't stop having it, it's so good. Give The Vol a try, you will love it!

A slightly belated review! A group of us booked in just before Christmas for a celebratory pre-Christmas lunch. The quantity, quality, and variety of food provided was of the highest standard. The service was wonderful. My companions were all equally impressed with the food and service.

Another great lunch. You really should try this place, it's great food, or just pop in for a drink. We eat out a lot and The Volunteer Arms is the one place we visit once a week ! Jx

Nothing is too much trouble. Lovely food at really good prices. Booked a table for nine including two under two. The children were welcomed and catered for. Highly recommended

this was the first visit for me to the volunteers arms as I have lived in Halifax for 40yrs, I was in a crowd of 11 volunteers who volunteer for the canalrivertrust, we had got our xmas dinner booked there. i stepped inside and was amazed with the décor, it was clean & tidy, we went to our booked tables and had our xmas dinner, it was very well presented and tasted very nice, and the landlord and chef was very welcoming, if there normal meals are as nicely presented as the xmas dinners then why isn't it busier?10/10 volunteer arms

I go on about this place and the food because it's so good. We eat here once or twice a week, I would leave even more reviews but only allowed to review once a month. You really should try the food here. Nice friendly atmosphere with efficient friendly staff. Jx
