The Vine Tree in Powys

We had a great meal last Friday evening. The food was all delicious and service was very friendly and efficient. Thank you for helping us have a wonderful evening.

Sunday 14th January 2024 table booked 2pm For 5 arrived ten minutes before, looked promising on arrival, waited 30 minutes to have our drinks order taken, was told that they had run out of roast beef, not a problem 5 ROAST LAMB as there was also lamb chops on the menu, which we didn't want 40minutes later I went to the bar to ask if our food was coming out soon, as 9yr old was hungry, 10 minutes later our meal arrived with two tiniest lamb chops! cold Luke warm plates, 3 of the tiniest roast potatoes. A single piece of broccoli, a T spoon of kale & 2 green beans, burnt sprouts that were left over from Christmas. Cauliflower cheese completely missed off the one plate, we asked to speak to a manger, explained our issues, he admitted he could understand as wasn't the usual standard and understood our issues & admitted they hadn't coped very well" a very limp apology, He said he'd bring up some extras and compensate the bill, There was 6 other tables in the room half of these tables complained. A chap on his own was completely ignored with an empty plate in front of him for at least 40minutes. First lesson of hospitality is ensure your customers are happy. I have been in hosipitliy for 20 years and have never experienced such poor service. After waiting for our table to be cleared which didn't happen we decide to leave. The manager gave us our bill which was the full price, even though he gave us the assurance twice that the bill would be compensated for the complaint, wrong food, shambled service, etc, it wasn't even that the food was terrible it was the lack of it! the absolute carelessness. He shrugged his shoulders as if he didn't know anything about it and said he had to speak to the owner.!! A short beareded man approached in a very arrogant manor his demeanour was already agitated as I'd seen him deal with another complaint as we came down the stairs. I explained exactly what had happened, slow poor service, ignored buy staff food wasn't what we ordered, items missing very very disappointed considering the price you are paying top rate for Sunday lunch here at £19.95 one course. He became extremely loud and irritated he grabbed the menu and started prodding the menu telling me we'd ordered lamb chops we didn't we ordered the roast lamb, he said his manger told us and you excepted, I believe my manger he told you! We even questioned the manager at the table and he said it was literally all they had left ! At this point I asked him to calm down as I didn't like how I was being spoken too, He started shouting " YOUR IN MY HOUSE MY RULES, what you want you want discount come with me I give you discount" he started banging around on the till He took 10% off, to me this wasn't adequate, he then went zero to hundred "YOUR IN MY HOUSE MY HOUSE MY FOOD MY RULES you pay" my reply irritated him even more " I'm actually paying to be in your house! and I expected to be given what I ordered, it to be hot good quality not the dregs you had left at the bottom of the pans and have my complaint dealed with in an acceptable manor and not to be yelled at for not enjoying my experience " "So you don't want to pay?" "Absolutely Not, not now" He chucked the bill on the side and said don't pay! he then stormed back round the bar swearing! He followed us out through the door after we'd crossed the road. Another man with glasses was stood with the manager, wearing a red tie and owner, he was stood directly opposite me trying to catch my attention and intimidate me as we stood in the carpark chatting before we departed! When we drove out of the car park they all shouted Wan*e*s. As we drove away! Word of advice to the egotistical owner would be find yourself a manger that can manage your interests when your in the kitchen! this young man was to busy parading around looking important rather than directing his team and dealing with issues. I've never been somewhere, where I've heard so many complaints in a short period of time everyone has bad days but this was off the scale BAD! This place is hugely over priced ! For the poor food and disorganised service! As for the owner his ego and arrogance was off the scale! AVOID AVOID AVOID

We visited in the hope we could recommend to guests staying at our local holiday let. Previous guests had told us it was lovely. Sadly, service was ineffectual, food could have been lovely had we had a full plate, and what we had actually ordered had arrived. Everyone has a bad day, would 100% have visited again had we not witnessed the arrogance and aggression of the owner?? whilst speaking with another customer that was complaining (we witnessed 4 tables of very unhappy customers). The aggression continued into the car park with the owner?? and manager and someone who appeared to be the car park bouncer!. If you can't listen to your customers and respond appropriately, you are definitely in the wrong business, no customer wants to be on the receiving end of a misplaced ego. No recommendations from us.

It took 45 minutes before we received our drinks which was just after our starter. The starter was delicious but was a bit cold. My mums sea bass was lovely my roast was ok but again not hot. After I flagged a waitress down, I ordered a second round of drinks and was asked if I wanted desert, I asked to look at the menu and it never materialised. We gave up and went home. It is lovely food but they have some big problems with service. There were other customers complaining and at least one other couple gave up on their desert. A real shame!!!

What should have been a lovely evening was ruined by inattentive staff and small portions for the price of food on offer. I ordered from the vegan menu and had a tiny moussaka and slice of garlic bread , my partner had the lamb which ended up just being small lamb chops. We waited for 40mins for staff to clear our plates and order deserts , in the end we got the menus ourself. The bill never materialised so we took ourselves down to pay the very expensive bill. A beautiful venue with nice food but very small portions for the price and style.

Food worth waiting for and our expectations on timing for our orders to be prepared were well managed. We had plenty of time for starters. In a party of three, two of us had the chicken supremen with garlic mash and I had the duck with risotto. Top notch. Delicious puddings and good wine selection. Will be back for Veganuary! This is a really good restaurant serving quality food and the owners are doing great things in a testing time for hospitality.

Disappointing evening here. Cold,with terrible service. Had to ask for menus,ignored by very young disorganised staff. Forgot our drinks twice,brought water when almost finished meal. Waited 50 minutes for our main course which was ok but nothing outstanding.Have been wanting to try this place for sometime,will not return.

Booked here for lunch today 5th November. Service was extremely slow, one of our party waited 30 minutes for her drink to then be told they didn't have the ingredients to make it. It was a 45 minutes wait for someone to take our food order and not one of the staff had a smile! On the plus side, the Sunday roast was lovely. Unfortunately after going to The Dragon and The Bear this weekend, I won't be booking The Vine Tree next time I'm in Crickhowell.

We chose this restaurant because the reviews were so good and we were thrilled. I love the decor which is fresh and modern with sensitivity towards the old building. The staff were extremely friendly, attentive and professional. The menu was varied and everything looked tempting. We chose the duck and the halibut and we were both delighted with our choices. Very nice food - we had the crab starter which was unusual and very tasty. The steak was lovely and the duck was perfect. It was paired with a really nice wine. Service was good and they let dogs in!

We enjoyed an exceptional meal last weekend. Lovely atmosphere, varied menu & excellent staff & ambience. Husband’s steak was very good, my rack of lamb was possibly best have ever had (!) and even the simple Afogato was jazzed up with some simple Almond flakes that made all the difference. We stayed at Pantybeiliau House locally and they recommended the Vine Tree to us.

We’ve been coming here for a few years now & it doesn’t disappoint. The location is great, friendly staff & the food has always been amazing. Simple classics but done to perfection in our eyes. Here’s to many more years & happy times spent there.
