The Village Green Cafe Bar in Kingston upon Hull, City of

Visited this restaurant with friends and went be back again. We all ordered the same meal, which was Chicken and Mushroom Stroganoff. Well all I can say, it was rubbish. It came in a pasta dish with the chips on the bottom, rice dumped on top, with a couple of mushrooms and a couple of pieces of chicken, no sauce to speak of. When we did complain, they fetched out 3 bowls with some sauce in, but it was really watery. Complained to the staff aagain and was told there was no manager on site and to ring on Saturday morning to speak to one. So my friend did this morning and spoke to one of the managers, he was very rude and didn't care less about the food being rubbish. Not good customer service and certainly won't be back. Will tell friends aswell about the rude management and horrible food. Such a shame as it used to be good, but not anymore.

Been here when it first opened and the food was great, today it was awful I ate as much as I could as was very hungry, meatballs dry, ciabatta felt and tasted microwaved and chips was just frozen chips, salad was soggy. Was asked how the meal was and the girl didn’t give me chance to explain she turned her back and said I’ll let the kitchen know, no apology

Party of 3 adults Attended for dinner Saturday evening 3rd Aug. Table was booked for 7pm but we arrived early 6.45pm.. Food order was taken at 7. 01 pm. Steak stroganoff, greek gyros, mexican chicken sizzler. After waiting 40 mins we noticed people arriving after us had been served their food and we hadnt. We queried the delay with a server who said it was nxt meal out. Sadly it wasnt. After another 10 mins we queried delay again to be told that because we'd ordered chicken dishes its cooked from fresh. I certainly hope so but it doesnt take near an hour to cook a few strips of chicken. We were being fobbed off. On the table next to us, another family of 3 had issues too with their food that had arrived. The gentleman had gammon which he didnt eat. Got up and walked out. The daughter didnt like her dish either so had to order another dish. Another family who ordered steak were told the sauces were an extra £2.50 even though it does not state on the menu that the sauce is extra. It says "choices of sauces" and it named the sauces. But no mention of extra cost!! Finally our food arrived almost an hour after ordering it. Whilst waiting for food to arrive my mum who is type 1 diabetic began to feel unwell as her blood sugar had dropped dangerously low. she had to take glucose tablets to try and stop her levels dropping even lower. Annoyingly the stroganoff wasnt hot and had to be sent back to be heated up. There as two young women servers and the taller one of the two had an attitude. She also kept glaring over at us. As we were still eating the two members of staff started clearing the surrounding tables and packing stuff away. Making us feel uncomfortable. We were the last people to leave the restaurant area and none of the staff acknowledged our departure with a thank you or good night. The table next to us also said they are not going to go back again For the past 2/3 years we have been regular visitors. But last night was our last. I am happy for the manager to contact me to discuss

Really enjoyed our meal at the village green, food here is always lovely. Great staff, friendly and helpful and a lovely setting too. Looking forward to our next visit next month.

I was recommended this restaurant and when we arrived it was quite busy. We had booked so was seated quite quickly luckily. I had the chicken satay tapas, my brother had the squid and my sister and mother had the prawn cocktail. I have tried to make satay sauce several times and all of them wasn't very good but they were miles better than the attempt this restaurant served. The aesthetic too was terrible. The squid was nice but obviously frozen bag not prepared in the restaurant. The prawn cocktail too was bland, again could have made better at home. I was hungry so ate most of the starter, so looked forward to the mains. Well I should have lowered my expectations, my Mexican skillet had a small piece of burnt chicken, I removed from the skillet straight away too. My mum had the meatballs and they too were burnt and flavourless. She refused to eat hers. The steaks were ok. The fat chips were the best thing. You will be surprised if you are still reading this that after all that we wanted desserts, surely one out of three courses will hit the spot. Again my expectations were sadly not met. The sticky toffee pudding again was far to sweet and the ice cream was the cheapest tasting Ice cream I have ever tasted. The food came to £126 for 4 and if I could pay based on taste only I would have asked for £5 for my petrol as compensation for a wasted evening. My mother said the best thing was the company so there was something positive about the evening. It did make us laugh. It's a shame my brother had been five times previously and he said it has gone down hill and its probably a new kitchen team.

What a joke this place is waited 55 minutes for a pie and a burger ended up leaving there was 13 people in so it was not busy !! Staff with attitude problem no sorry etc and they say places are struggling no wonder when it’s ran like this !! In tribal now nice smile and eating within 15 minutes !!

First time visit we decided to try for Father’s Day lunch service very slow food very poor. How can you muck up nachos well they can here the salsa and guacamole was all dried up needed more spit so left it the katsu chicken felt like eating the sole of your shoe both dishes terrible. The only thing that was ok was our sons burger he wanted nothing on it I think they did the meals then realised this so the other two dishes sat around till they re did the burger not the way to go so won’t be revisiting ☹️

Every time I go to this place I’m left feeling like they don’t want to serve me! Gave this place one last chance yesterday hoping that the attitude from staff had changed but no, same old service with a snarl. Such a shame as could be such a lovely place. Ended up not eating here because of the above.

Tapas sharer We picked the Tapas sharer, substituting the patata bravas for veggie fries. Short wait for the meal, but looks very nice with the hot bread & dipping oil. I have the prawns to myself because the wife is allergic to them. So plenty of cheese & chicken to share. Plenty of food for two OAPs to share , with two drinks then two coffees, We have always found the staff very efficient & pleasant. £36 for everything , good value, great food.

Very tasty food, we both ordered the Mexican chicken siizler which was lovely. The service was great. Good price too for the amount of food you receive.

So trying not to be to harsh but had a chicken salad well chicken and iceberg lettuce and a tiny bit of dressing less is more and a salad should have at least 3 things in it for sure....... I was full but wont rush back

We had the 2 steaks and wine for £30 rib eye it was lovely will definately go back staff was very nice we wasn't expecting much but was surprised how nice the steak was beats beefeater hands down for their steaks

Christmas meal with work colleagues, last year booked from the Christmas menu and it was wonderful, this year not. Soup was delicious but it went downhill from here. Belly pork had a weird texture that was not pleasant, stated with crackling but was poor quality pork scratching on the side, vegetables no flavour. Dessert rice pudding had no flavour apart from a spice that was sitting on the top. Friend had sea bass with a port sauce that overpowered the fish. This chef does not understand flavours that’s for sure, there was no depth of flavour to any of the dishes. After a disappointing overcooked omlette there recently, it’s not somewhere I’ll be spending my hard earned cash at again, too many good places to eat. Shame because the place has a nice ambience about it.

Food was OK however service and attitude was absolutley terrible , will not visit this cafe again until the staff has been retrained in there attitude.

Not something I normally do, but just had to let everyone know what a fabulous place this is. Had wonderful birthday meal for mum-in-law and family this afternoon/evening. Food first class, plenty of choice, including lovely varied vegetarian meals, service excellent, prices reasonable, ambience perfect, warm, cosy, background music playing but not too loud so that we couldn't hold conversations with each other. We took our own birthday cake and staff were more than accommodating with this, even though they do full dessert menu. First time visit for me and hubby, definitely won't be our last. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Booked this venue for 50 people for a surprise retirement meal out, the first week in September and secured the booking with a £250 on 22.09.23. The booking was for 27.10.23. After several conversations with the female staff and ensuring I knew the 50 meal choices a week prior the night, all was good to go until the manager demanded that 6 days before the planned night (21.10.23) he wanted the remainder of the money for every meal choice and gave me two days to obtain it. This had never once been mentioned before, in the whole six weeks I’d had it booked. I had done everything that was required of me to do. Tried to explain to the rude manager that this was not only unfair but was also going to be exceptionally difficult to arrange in such a short time as I’d already arranged everything else, as requested, over the six weeks and for all 50 people. I also explained that I’d had a couple of family members in hospital whilst I’d been arranging all this and now he’d left it too close to the date to arrange in two days, especially seeing as though I was going to be in Leeds for my son’s hospital appointments that coming Monday. He actually mocked me on the phone and ridiculed me regarding my situation, telling me his staff shouldn’t have okayed this and that he’d returned from holiday and not been happy with the arrangement (long holiday-it had been booked for 6 weeks!). He was actually so rude and disrespectful on the phone. In the end, he left me no alternative but to go elsewhere. I did that and sorted it last weekend. We spent well over a £1000 last night, at the alternative venue, which he missed out on as a direct result of his manner and attitude. Every other member of staff have always been great, and was about this planned booking, so I think it’s important to acknowledge that. However, I will never set foot in TVG again and nor will the other 49 people within the group. I’ve only given it one star because there isn’t the option to give it none.

Firstly when we arrived we noticed A advert on the door for a chef after our meal I can understand why it was, the meal was awful.also noticed when we went in Most people plates had lots of uneaten food.I had gammon it had lots of gristle It was that tough you could not cut it Plus it was over cooked and burnt really ended up paying over £10 for chips as to be honest they were about the be bit Certainly will not return and it’s expensive for the quality of the food . Firstly, I HATE giving bad reviews, I would rather give feedback direct but on our recent visit no-one cleared our plates/asked us how it was so we left. Living local we used to come here a lot, since lockdown we visited in May with a group, some found it ok, some thought it was processed frozen food which was a shame, but we decided to try again as it used to be beautiful food. We got the calamari and 3 tapas, Poor is an understatement. The 'calamari' was like a mushy battered onion ring, 100% from a freezer bag. The chicken satay was caked in thick peanut butter again seemingly pre-made pre-packed as was the halloumi bites. We ate less than half of it. I realise the rising costs of everything has impacted food prices etc but for an independent place I don't expect frozen processed foods like you get in your local 2 for 1

came here for tea last week staff with attitude problems probably same person as the other reports !! waited 50 minutes for my starter as soon as I had eaten it they brought the mains .. halfway through my starter I asked for another drink I had to get ups and go queue for it although I had waited 50 minutes for my food its a shame no one there seems to have a brain as the food was nice just VERY poorly run ... will I return ..nope they dont deserve my money and wont get it no manners from the staff at all

We picked the Meze sharer, didn't have to wait long . Service impeccable again. Meze very good choice for us to share. Our lovely waitress even remembered our coffee choice.

I have visited here on a number of occasions and always sang it’s praise, but I visited recently to catch up with my friend and had a disappointing meal! I never thought I’d be saying this as the food has always been exceptional. I ordered the gyros, and when it arrived I was actually surprised that it left the kitchen! A heap of olives had been dropped on the plate, the chips were thin and scrappy looking, the cubes chicken appeared to have been dumped on the plate and some of it was dry, and there was nothing inside the bread except for shredded iceberg lettuce that had been rammed in. The staff serving were extremely young and because I was out with a friend I foolishly did not complain. It was not value for money (quite expensive) and I did not eat all of my meal. I won’t be returning again. I spent over £16 and that was for a large Diet Coke and he gyros!!!

Family lunch with my Grandson and son. My Grandson accidentally spilt his glass if milk on the table. A waitress came and put a blue torque roll on the table and left us to clean it up! It was very embarrassing as it was quite busy yet the waitress didn't help at all. I messaged them on Facebook, they have seen the message but no reply. Visited with two friends. Pre booked as we were aware it would get busy. Glad we did. swiftly seated and was left to look at the menu. Have to go to the bar to order, which wasn't a problem. We opted for a sharing nachos as a starter. The portion was huge! Between the three of us we struggled to finish it. We quickly regretted the starter when the mains came out. I had the chicken kebab which was lovely but again a very large portion. The chunky chips were amazing. My friends opted for the lasagne and the chicken skewers and both were very pleased with their choices. We all struggled to clear our plates and left no room for dessert, which I was gutted about as they looked really tasty. Have already booked to return.

Visit here often as it is local to me. Went for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago, cannot fault the food. Sunday lunch was beautiful and tasty! However the staff looked miserable and like they didn’t want to be there, don’t think I saw one of them smile once which is a shame because it affects the mood of customers.Also the high chairs need a very good clean!! The straps are very grubby and dirty, I sat my baby on my knee instead of using one. If the rating was based on food alone it would have been a 4 but the service and highchair cleanliness let it down.

Ordering food and drink for a group would be much easier if staff came to the table to take the order and payment. Especially when orders taken at the bar were subsequently changed due to non availability. Otherwise the food was great and serving staff were attentive.

Half a sausage roll, a sandwich, scone and a few bite size cream cakes. Plus bottom less tea pot. Was nice and staff attentive but I would have preferred bit more savoury and less cream but thats just my preference. £12 lighter and later i was thinking id rather have just got one of their meals which looked delicious. Will return but not for the afternoon tea.

Lovely Sunday dinner we often come on Sunday, all home cooked. Good decent portion for the value of money.

Went here for lunch midweek to see if it was as good as we had heard! Certainly was and a bit of a surprise really (but don’t know why). Cafe style with a good choice on the menu. We had full English and tuna and cheese panini. The full English, with no exaggeration was probably one of the best I have ever eaten, two of everything (sausage, egg and bacon) with portobello mushroom and black pudding (didn’t have beans or bread so can’t comment). The food was very good quality, tasty and perfectly cooked (sausage the star of the show). The panini came with salad and chips, all went down very well. Good coffee and tea, and all very reasonably priced. Really very impressed

Have just been for a family night out, it just happened to be steak night £23.95 for two steaks & a bottle of wine. The steak was cooked to perfection accompanied with salad onion rings & chips all served at the same time.

Small cosy bar restaurant. Very Good food breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and nighttime meals. Small cosy snug to have a drink.

Lovely little place to meet for food. Only downside is that gets quite busy. However, food and service is fast. Been numerous times and would recommend a visit!

I live on Kingswood and have used the place since it opened, recently the food has been disappointing. The past 3 times that myself, my wife and daughter have eaten here, there seems to be a focus on putting plenty of food on the plate whilst ignoring the quality side of the meal.

Fantastic little bar / restaurant, we have been many times over the last year and the food has always been amazing especially love the tapas, everything is fresh and large portions and reasonably priced so well worth your money for the food that is served.

We had a large table booked so had to pay deposit before hand. Five people wasn't available due too a very close family bereavement. We explained and they just said we would lose there deposit. i asked if they could use a table of four would then a deposit be refunded and we just got a very abrupt answer of NO. We then waited over 15 mins for our food order to be taken after we tried to give it over counter. After 30 mins we was asked if they could have the spare table. i said if we can have the deposit back then not a problem. again the answer was a very quick NO. So they turned four customers away!!!!!. its now 45 mins after we had order our food and wine which neither had arrived. We asked for the wine which was then brought !!! Our meals came after an hour. Got to say the food was superb every meal was fantastic. This is the first time that any of us have received service like this from the village green and its a massive shame. Many have eaten here for years and at Newland ave before moving with our children been type 1 like the owner. Shame the superb food was let down with awful service please ask the waitresses to at least smile also .....................

Been here a few times and have to say the food has never failed to please. The steak is just the best in my opinion. The new layout has made it lots more spacious. Only thing I wasn't too impressed with on 1 of my visits, was that we had to find staff to serve us drinks at the bar. Wouldn't put me off recommending this place though. Looking forward to my next visit soon.

Trading standards may be interested in your fake hand wash in the ladies toilets!!!! That was one of the things that set you apart!! You have obviously given up on the finer things!

Myself and my husband booked a table and it was our first time of using this restaurant, we just wanted a light lunch I had the ploughmans and my hubby had the all day breakfast and we weren't disappointed. The presentation i give 10/10 and the taste again 10/10. Every one was helpful and very pleasant I will be definately going back again.

I visited with a friend. We both had a slice of Victoria sponge, a cup of coffee, and a pot of tea. The tea and the coffee were lovely, but the Victoria sponge was not good at all. It came with a little pot of pouring cream, which I thought was very strange. After my first bite I realised why. It was very, very dry and grainy. It was either stale or previously frozen. However, I think they advertise everything to be fresh so not sure why the sponge was so bad. I would have preferred a smaller portion of better quality cake.

A nice clean modern cafe serving good food at a good price. Breakfast is good and plenty of it. A good cuppa too!

Popped in for tea on Friday, had the tapas sharer, lovely food but for a starter the portion size was way too big as it spoilt my main as I was too full, all 4 of us thought the same, had a burger for the main which was spot on but couldn’t fully enjoy as I was quite full, decent drinks selection and great value for money

I never leave terrible reviews but in this case i feel i have to for the service we have received. This review has nothing to do with food.

I recently visited with a group of friends for lunch and have to say I was a little disappointed at the limited selection on the menu. It was your usual sandwich/panini/jacket potato but that was about it. Nothing very adventurous or even light bites. I know they used to offer a better selection from visiting previously so I’m not sure why this has changed but know others have stopped using it on a lunch for this reason. Don’t get me wrong the food we did get was lovely and as always the service very good but I think I’ll stick to using it on an evening when I know the food is top notch.

Recently renovated and enlarged, the Village Green really does offer homely comfort and excellent value. It is light, roomy, airy and quite comfortable in a simple and homely way. There are tables outside if the weather is good. The service is friendly and efficient, the food tasty and offers real value. The pan-fried sea bass with prawns, potatoes and peas was a generous portion, looked inviting, was beautifully cooked and quite delicious. My daughter thoroughly recommended the beef stroganoff too. Both dishes were priced between £11 and £12 each. With drinks, we paid just over £27. Very reasonable indeed!

I ordered beef stroganoff and when it arrived I was dissatisfied to say the least, the menu said “pan fried beef” and it was correct that it was beef but it was stewing steak!!. I raised this with the waitress who took it back to the chef, upon returning while my partner was tucking into her meal I was told “ it was pan fried that morning but stewed all day ???” Although they were apologetic and offered me a steak which I declined as my partner would have finished her meal. So what turned out to be a romantic meal was nothing more than an awkward meal for one!! Severely dissatisfied.
