Dukes Cafe Bar in Kingston upon Hull, City of

Wouldn't recommend going without booking first. Arrived at 7pm to have a meal as they advertise serving food till 8. However refused service even though all menus still on the table wasn't even told the kitchen was shut when ordering a drink.

We went there today 8th February 2020 the food has really gone down potions rubbish I got the halloumi sandwich it was absolutely awful my friend got the salmon that was the smallest potion ever they need to learn how to give you a proper potion of fries because they dont have a clue no more I got what I describe as a egg cup with a few fries in we eat here a lot but no more that it save your money and go elsewhere it's got rubbish unfortunately

My daughter attends dance class close by so I popped in (alone) whilst waiting to pick her up. I had a vegetarian breakfast and cappuccino. Both were lovely. The blonde lady who served me (possibly Polish - she had an accent) was really polite, smiley and friendly. The waiter who took my plates checked I had enjoyed my food and was equally as pleasant. I have eaten here many times in the past and always had nice meals (everything is homemade). I will probably be back next week when I have an hour to spare again :-)

Been eating at dukes now on a Sunday for a breakfast on and off for about a year, always had a great meal , However today was appalling- music was heavy felt like was in. A night club every song said f f f f in in! Totally not appreciated Food was very poor- Luke warm Tasteless Salt pot didn’t work. The blonde girl serving was very plesent as always. Had a latte which was delicious But over all Will try again , Mayb just an off day

Diabolical service today . . . Ordered Gammon STEAK and presented with 2 slices of thick gammon bacon ! When challenged and explained that I had ordered a Gammon S-T-E-A-K in good faith from menu (photo hopefully attached) was told chef had cut gammon steak in 2 ! Does s/he do this with beef steak too ? Had a battle but changed order for lasagne and mentioned £ 2 difference in price but left without refund, despite mentioning it twice . . . Very P-O-O-R, even negligible customer service received and now regretting the Christmas DO I have booked for 10 people if that is Duke's attitude ! Can't believe it after visiting from the very first week they opened !

I had breakfast (veggie) send one egg back due to been over cooked ( came back with another one very greasy and half cooked) had no butter on my plate and the veggies sausage where cold in the middle, when I told the waiter about this initial he was understanding and went to the chef and came back with an attitude telling me because I had “most of the meal” i could not have a full refund it cost £6 and Change the waiter was unaware that i had given the beans away (5 at the table) so in-fact the cost £6 and some change was a mushroom two eggs ( one which was sent back), 3 hash browns and two slices of toast. And a tomato which was not touch due to the fact it was so greasy. I was given a full refund but I have left feeling very sad due to the quality of the food, service and attitude from the waiter was unneeded as well as quite conformational as well, also seeing into the kitchen and seeing how I was been looked at by the kitchen staff was unneeded Overall customer service :2food 0 cost: for what you get a 0 Would not recommend the food and staff need training on how to deal with complains as well as not coping an attitude with upset customers

It's not bad. It's just a pub though.

Although knowing the kitchen closed at eight, we tried to order desserts and coffee after our meal. 8.25pm and you cannot have dessert (limited menu) or coffee as the kitchen is closed. The staff just kept repeating that"the kitchen is closed " , cutting a slice of cake is apparently the kitchen staff's job and they have gone home! What the problem was with coffee I don't know because the coffee machine was in the bar. The staff then started closing everything down, putting chairs on tables etc. We eventually just left after feeling being made to feel very unwelcome. Won't be going to Duke again.

I have eaten over the years at Dukes and been impressed with the consistency of their service and food. They are continually improving the place, and on a sunny day with all the doors open so it looked upon a sunny Princes Avenue, it felt a little like being on holiday. The Shiraz wine was really good, and my gammon, fried egg, thick-cut chips, grilled tomato, onion rings, mushroom and side salad just absolutely hit the spot. The gammon was thin and had been tenderised, and almost covered the plate. It wasn’t too salty as is often the case with gammon served in pubs, and I was very impressed! I went the next day for fish and chips and it was equally as good. I was also impressed with the diversity in the menu, and the fact that they offer lighter versions of the same meals to suit those with lighter appetites. The staff were excellent as well. Well done Dukes!

Delicious, meaty meat pie. Home made chips! Excellent

No draught beer - just keg. The fish and chips were poor with the chips tasting like a lump of lard. They were not crisp but soggy.

Brilliant food and excellent service every time we go. Such a pleasure.

Well worth a visit, the chorizo burger was the best I've ever had cooked to perfection. The chips were homemade too

I was totally looking forward to this having booked a week in advance and checking the menu. Unfortunately the chunky chips were dark brown... almost burnt but not cooked right through and tasted of old fat. When I complained I was met with a very surly chef who insisted it was because they were new potatoes... and replaced them... with the same tasting chips. I would suggest a change of fat in the fryer as other restaurants can produce light coloured, tasty chips. Also the chicken/jalapeno wrap had no jalapenos in it. The salad was pulled out of a bag with no dressing. I hardly ate anything... it was awful.

£10.25 for a ‘special’ lamb burger that was very ordinary served with one lettuce leaf, two slices of tomato and very few chips isn’t great, the steak pie may supposed to be clever with puff pastry sheet top and bottom but it’s not a pie and the jug of gravy had a thick layer of grease on top.

Great staff , great tapas.l go there at least 3x a week.

Went for drinks with my partner & sister in law & decided to stay & have some food. It wasn’t to busy which is good when ordering food & considering it was a Saturday night about 6.30 Myself & my sister in law both ordered the halloumi Verdi & my partner the pulled pork burger & 2 sides of chips. We didn’t have to wait to long for the food & we all really enjoyed the food. You got plenty of halloumi too. Staff was friendly as always when we visit. Nice atmosphere & clean Would recommend this place to family and friends

Sorry. Steak was awesome but waited about 45 mins to serve 6 of us. When the food came it was just poorly served and not much veg to go round. Id try Garbutts, best on this street

They had beer mats advertising a free pint of Pravha with each beer mat, but then didn't allow it. Clearly pocketing the freebie.

Bouncer fly off the Handel over nothing has a chip on his shoulder cause he's ginger, did not hear my actual conversation just judged on the fact I said ginger, I will never spend my money in this place again!

A group of nine of us descended here and the food and service was outstanding. Well recommend it.

Came here for lunch and was not disappointed! Good range of food on the menu. I chose the chicken burger with bbq pulled pork on and it was lovely. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Also suitable for dogs outside.

Kitchen has been closed for sometime so I was looking forward to it reopening. Unfortunately not as bit a menu as previously but food still good

Lovely lunch at dukes. The menu has some great dishes on, or if you have a hearty appetite theres always the main menu. Anything you choose would be fab. The surroundings a d atmosphere are good as are the staff.

My husband and I went for lunch on Saturday. Its always a good choice. The men is good and the price is too. We haven't been for a while a d it didn't disappoint. I had halloumi skewer and my husband had small fish and chips.....great food very fresh and tasty.

It was a real shame that we didn't enjoy our meals as much as we should have done because otherwise the experience was great. Good staff, lots of space and a very interesting selection of options on the new menu.

Visited with a friend for my birthday. Both had the meat pie, which was lovely. Maybe could have been slightly bigger portion (chips/mash/peas) bit was very tasty.

What has happened to the menu in this place? The food used to be amazing but now there is the tiniest menu with a choice of 4-5 things plus sandwiches. Such a shame

Quick & efficient service Salmon & prawns nice

Visited on a Sunday afternoon for a light meal and we both ordered the light lunch fish & chips. It came with mushy peas and bread and butter. The fish itself was fine as was the batter, the only thing I'd mention is that it wasn't skinless. The peas came in a little pot which was boiling hot, but the actual peas verse cold, so we asked for them to be changed. The waiter came back with steaming hot pots but not fresh ones, they were the original ones reheated.

Went to Dukes yesterday for lunch, ordered the seafood platter, absolutely disgusting, the fish goujons tasted like they have been in the freezer for years certainly no fish left in side and then fried until the death. Total waste of money.

Had a great night here with over 20 of us having drinks. Reasonable prices and plenty of room. Will be back

Good vibrant place to socialise

Dukes is always nice for a meal out. The portions are big and the food is good quality and good value for money. The service as usual was great.

I have been coming here for years, I love it, but I was horrified to see a new bartender palming money. I never check my change but I will from now on. You don't usually associate things like that in such a nice area.Please start to check your change.

Went in to ask when the kitchen would be ready as they had a "kitchen is closed for maintenance" sign on the door. Waited 3 mins for anyone to come to the bar then when I asked I got the reply "Not today." The conversation only got worse but ended by her saying the kitchen is open on Wednesday Thursday and Fridays. I left and won't be going back. Hire better staff Dukes.

One of a run of bars on Princess Avenue selling food and Craft ales. They are all much of a muchness. Not my cup of tea.

Went out late Sunday afternoon to go to Garbutts, decided to have a drink in Dukes which has sliding doors and lovely outside seating when the sun is shining. We went to Garbutts, which was packed out and came back to eat at Dukes which was a big mistake. I wanted a Kofta kebab and the girlfriend wanted haddock and chips. Sorry no haddock and chips whilst at the bar paying no problem,ordered a chicken dish with poi red sauce, black pudding and small new potatoes that had been roasted,ordered a kofta kebab,and paid for the meal. Ten minutes later a waiter comes to the table, sorry no lamb, okay ordered a chicken skewer. 15 minutes later food arrived. My chicken skewer was dry and tough, the rice was an atomic orange colour which was not as good as the 2 minute Home Bargains microwave instant, the salad was boring and obviously made from cheap wilted salad ingredients with a slash of balsamic vinegar to liven it up. The girlfriends chicken dish was a mixture from hell. Burnt potatoes, strange tasting black pudding and a pepper sauce from a steak dish, vile.

Regular here as it is local. Good for a coffee, lite bite or a meal. Beer selection is average but get busy on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Good food and service , great atmosphere

I will always visit Dukes when on Princes ave - summer is definitely best with it's street front terrace. It's really like being on holiday. The cocktails are really good and they have a huge range of beers. Food is really good too - great for friend dates on weekdays. The service is always really good. I recently visited over the bank holiday - but a long island iced tea at 2pm wasn't my best idea!

This place did use to be pretty good but last two visit have been a bit underwhelmed sadly... veg curry was only vegan option, clearly out the freezer and microwaved with mushy spuds in it.. not very spicy. Kids options good and the battered fish looked good. However the chips were poor all round... very average. Will be looking elsewhere on princes Ave from now

I’ve been to Dukes half a dozen times in the last year or so but this is the first time I’ve got around to writing a review. Dukes is one of the best places to have a meal and a few drinks on Prinny Ave, the food is always freshly cooked and the portions are huge, it’s a standard bar/pub food menu with burgers and fish and chips and normally 2 or 3 specials on the board next to the bar, I’ve always had a great experience in Dukes and the ladies that work the bar and serve the food are always polite and prompt with serving the food and clearing the tables. All round it’s well worth a visit.

Great atmosphere and service with friendly staff. The food is excellent particularly the fish and chips with an excellent specials of the day board along with good beers and wine. A good mix of age groups during the day overall highly recommended.

Not the best! Beef dinner off the Christmas menu was so tough, even my knife couldn't cut through it. Disappointing really. Company made up for the poor food.

Me and my wife have been frequenting princess avenue in hull for the past few weeks and I must say this is the cleanest nicest bar there is down here sensible priced drinks and serve cappuccino as well if you don’t want alcoholic drinks the menu looks great to and very reasonable price well worth a visit

Visited Dukes on a fairly quiet Wednesday evening with 3 friends for a catch up and dinner. It is well presented inside and a nice place to have a relaxed drink. There is a good choice of food on the menu including burgers, salads, grills and traditional meals and also a specials board. I ordered fish and chips and was presented with a fish nearly as big as me and very delicious! The portion size was extremely generous and my companions equally enjoyed their salmon, fishcake and steak dishes. The main meals are all around £9/£10 in price and all well presentes and good sized portions. Would have given it an excellent rating but no one came to check if our meals where ok after they had been brought out.

Called for tea with family members. Found a table easily even though it was busy. The waitress was attentive and efficient. The food was lovely, the steak especially so. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would definitely recommend. A place to relax and enjoy with friends/family.

My wife and myself have been visiting Dukes for the last ten years plus before going to football home games and we have never had a bad meal, with extremely good value meals. The steak ciabatta with cheese and extra mushroom is to die for, chunky chips are great. I visit many restaurants but none can match Dukes steak ciabatta. The staff are very friendly and efficient and always know what you want and even the usual table when you ring to book. The food choice is incredible and presentation mouth watering, difficult to stick to my usual choice. A must.

There was 15 people and we went to celebrate my dad's birthday. Everybody enjoyed their food, there was ample portions and the food tasted really good. Also the bar staff was really polite and always smiling which is a bonus

Called into Dukes for lunch today and was quite impressed. Whilst the standard menu offered some great choices, we were attracted to the specials board.- specifically the lamb burger with harissa salsa. Also served in a brioche bun, with home made coleslaw and chunky fries. This was truly delicious. Staff were efficient and friendly. Considered good value at £9.95.

A modern choice with comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff and universally pleasing menu. A great choice for a quiet drink during the day sat near the window, watching the world go by.

The restaurant/bar wasn't busy and atmosphere was pleasant and not rushed. Our reserved table was immediately available and the staff were lovely and non-intrusive. The menu was very good as was the food and there was plenty of it too. Very good value for money

Visited Dukes with a friend on Friday teatime last - we had reserved a table and got seated straight away - I had a veggie burger with Halloumi Cheese - it arrived with hand cut chips and large onion rings/coleslaw. The meal was delicious and nicely presented - I was so stuffed had to leave half my burger (staff did ask if I wanted a doggy bag) lol Staff were polite and friendly - excellent value for money! Looking forward to going back - ambience was good too but around 7.00pm the music suddenly got very loud and was difficult to talk ( I appreciate this is for the Friday night crowd) this was ok as we were leaving to go on somewhere else. Would thoroughly recommend for eats

After having a lovely meal here with my girlfriends I decided to re-visit with another friend. The food was simply amazing for the price!

We ate twice last week in duke and both times had a fantastic full English breakfast!

Visited on Friday evening sat outside in sun and ordered the special of honey breaded chicken and must say it was excellent accompanied by fries and salad it could not be faulted. All for under £6! Definitely be bavk

Service was really nice and friendly. The staff were young but really great at what they did. And really accommodating as i was a bit awkward and wanted a different dressing with meal.

Visited for first time just after opening hours, so place had a few people in but not many which meant getting served and recieving my food in no time at all, service was professional and friendly and my English breakfast and cappuccino were exellent will go again for a treat breakfast 👍

They simply refused to serve me and my friend food and soft drinks because we didn't have IDs! We arrived there to have lunch, talked to the barman, got seats, looked at the menu but when I went to order, the same barman that told me about the service and everything said "they don't serve anything without IDs" not even food and plain water. I had the feeling that that wasn't the real issue, another guy was instructing him, he looked like he didn't really know what was going on, but... Don't think I'm going there again

Dukes do a great English breakfast which is possibly the best in town. It's served up from 11am and is a great way to start the day. The only reason for me marking the place down is :

Dukes' does the best cappuccinos in Hull. They actually have loads of foam like they should do ! The staff are really good and professional too. Only gripe is if you want to sit outside there will be smokers but no fault of the bar. A nice friendly atmosphere too . Thanks for getting it right ! :-)
