Patience required at the till even when there is no queue. No experienced staff to be seen to speed things up or teach juniors. Staff get flummoxed very easily. Although nearly empty when we visited we had to quote a table no.!?? on ordering. Which is a ball ache. Saw orders going to wrong table. Reminds me of a works cafeteria run by 4th graders on work experience week. Good food though.

The breakfast quality is shocking, that’s cheap and nasty I cannot describe how bad it is. The egg was swimming in lard, the sausages I wouldn’t feed to a dog they were that cheap and the bacon was probably the cheapest you could possibly buy. Infact the only think we ate was the toast. The company that has taken it over should be ashamed of themselves, charging premium prices for cakes and buns that have been bought from a catering company and defrosted. It’s a 0 out of 10 for me

Visited with my family for lunch, food was absolutely rubbish, the food is also very expensive I ordered a mushroom omelette which was about 2 inches thick with a pile of tinned mushrooms thrown on the side. It was very unappetising. One of my party had scrambled egg which wasn't mixed properly and was just a mess of white and yellow on their plate. The place is run by teenagers who don't have a clue about customer service. We waited 50 minutes for our food even though the place wasn't busy, one young girl spent most of her time leaning against the counter doing nothing. We definitely won't return and I certainly wouldn't recommend this place to anyone until they retrain or get better staff.

Used to use this cafe frequently when owned by cooplands. My recent visit first time since new owners...not very good I'm afraid. The cafe was particularly busy, didn't have a table number and was told if I don't have a number they cannot take my order. This can be tricky when on my own. Got a table number and then waited over 30mins for breakfast. I had to remind them in the end and they stated they had lost my ticket. A lady waiting next to me had been waiting 45mins for 3 hot sandwiches. The tea cups were not clean, they were stained. I asked if I could have a coffee cup instead as they looked cleaner...was told no, 'the tea cups are coming out the dishwasher looking like they are stained.Thats how it is.' This really put me off. The breakfast was OK but toast only cooked on one side. I was very disappointed by this experience and unsure whether to give it another try. The cafe used to run like clock work but not this time round im afraid .

My second visit to Hull's Secret Garden. There was a long queue at the counter but it soon went down. The wait was about 20 minutes which was fair enough given the busyness! I had seen this on TA and wondered where it was in the city centre. I was in Hull shopping (a rare occasion) when I suddenly spotted the sign, curiosity overcame me and I decided to investigate! The entrance on the ground floor (street level) is just that. There is a lift or stairs to go upstairs to the spacious and airy restaurant. I was quite surprised at the size of the cafe which occupies a corner plot on the first floor of the building overlooking the streets on 2 sides. The big windows make the cafe light and welcoming. You queue up with a tray and collect sandwiches and cakes (Couplands bakery so they should be good) etc from the chiller or order meals and drinks at the counter. I just had a pot of tea and a cheese scone on this occasion.I found a window table to watch the world go by on the street down below. There are 2 levels with a couple of steps to watch out for, especially if carrying a loaded tray. My scone was a little heavy but tasty nonetheless and definitely ‘hit the spot.’ Lots of people were having lunches brought to their tables, quiches, salads, jacket potatoes etc and they all looked inviting. I noticed the soup and bread roll on the menu and feel that I must re-visit and give it a try. They do breakfasts too. There was also a children’s menu so I may visit next time I have the grandchildren. It was certainly a busy place at lunch time which is a good advert in itself, a lot of customers of a ‘certain age’ who looked like ‘regulars.’ I thought the prices looked good value for money. My scone and tea were less than £4.I will definitely be back!

Had a beef sandwich & slice of custard - plain but fresh. Quick service & very clean facilities.

Nice clean place, friendly staff, food nicely cooked and hot. Had a cooked breakfast, did not have long to wait, also visited at lunchtime. Good choice of meals, they have a nice display cabinet, with sandwiches and cakes. Hope to visit again soon.
