We went for a meal today to celebrate my Grandads heavenly 90th birthday ( he passed away in December). We were a group of 26 and so had preordered everything in advance. The room setting was lovely at the rear with doors open to the garden. That’s about the only positive thing I have to say. The service was nothing short of abysmal (drinks orders after at least 20 mins waiting), the food was pretty much all cold and very poor quality. Considering how much we were charged, I expected much more. If I were the management I would be embarrassed to have served and then charged for that. We will not be returning, nor recommending.

An opportunity for The Villa to showcase its restaurant was sorely missed when we attended for the 1st time with 26adults & 5 children for a celebration with family & friends. The starters were quite ordinary & rather small & whilst the main courses were tasty they too were not substantial & lacking in vegetables. Bread & fries were requested & were charged as extras on the final bill. The desserts were also on the small side, it was all rather disappointing. A chance to impress & build their customer base unfortunately failed as we will not be returning.

We visited as a party of 30 to celebrate a family birthday, upon arrival the tables had not been laid out as requested, luckily this was spotted and rectified before the birthday girl arrived, the whole group commented on the ridiculous portion sizes, the starters were tiny, the fish dish and the belly pork were minuscule, with maybe a mouthful of potatoes, there could have only been £2-£3 worth of food on the plate, so much so we had to order some chips to supplement the meal, these came in a small bowl which they had the audacity to charge £5 a portion for. The food was average at best, and the prices are extortionate for what you get, we were all disappointed and won’t be returning

I always try to make my reviews very frank and honest and have done the same here. My family and myself booked to go to the villa for Christmas lunch and we dined in the pavilion. Upon arrival, we received a drink. There was a variety and all were happy. We found our table and it looked really nice, there were crackers and hats, balloons and party poppers etc, which did add to the fun. We received our starters, some had the soup, which they said was lovely, and others had pate. The pate did look a little brown and then pink on the inside, but this was because it had been pre-prepared. I’ve been to many events that are catering for large numbers. It’s not possible to prepare each dish individually. It was nice, and the chutney that came with it was lovely. I have to be honest when I say I and the rest of the party were very disappointed with the main course. The portion size was very small. We all thought the vegetables were undercooked and the parsnip wasn’t roasted. I did end up leaving some of my vegetables as they were so hard. The turkey was 2 thin slices with stuffing in the middle and it was quite dry. The roast potatoes though were very nice, though there was only two. I don’t like being negative in such a nice environment, but the main course was very lacking. There was a choice of puddings, one being a chocolate and cherry torte and the other Christmas pudding. I had the torte which was absolutely gorgeous. Others had the Christmas pudding and said that was very good too. This was followed by tea or coffee and mince pies which were very nice. I did enjoy it. There was a lovely ambience, good music, Santa was there, and an elf making balloon animals. Would I go again on Christmas Day? If I knew there was going to be an improvement with the main course, then yes I would.

Very disappointing return to this restaurant. It’s main attraction is the building and grounds itself. It is still expensive for what you get, and when a Caesar salad doesn’t have any of the advertised anchovies, and the truffle parmesan chips doesn’t have either, then something is wrong. Sad, but it isn’t what it was.

Had a lovely meal on 6th Sept 2020! Unfortunately there was no rice OR Naan bread with the vegetarian balti that I had. I have had curry for 50 or so years and this is the first time ever that this has happened. The food at "The Villa" isn't cheap but is very nice, but curry without rice and naan, surely they can run to that.

Nice venue and ambience. Lovely aubergine and fried outer mushroom starters. The lovely Angela had Hunters Chicken, which was better than I expected. I had hake with potatoes which would have been fine if the hale had been cooked properly. Eventually asked for remainder to be cooked through, which is was. Would I go back again? Yes but with a careful eye.

Myself and 3 relatives went here for afternoon tea, firstly the disabled parking is abysmal and is NO WAY disabled friendly, my mother and Aunt both have serious limited mobility problems and whichever method you choose to enter the building there is a long walk to the Bar/ dining area, this was my first gripe and i did mention it to the young lady on reception. I did not recall seeing any hand sanitiser anywhere but possibly mistaken, so we used our own !!, The table we was taken to was not set for an afternoon tea for 4 people which is usually part of the experience of afternoon tea, lovely china table wear and linen, there was what looked like one purple weed in a vase as décor and that was it, our tea and coffee were served and then the afternoon tea, it was probably the most boring and stingy afternoon tea around , the scone was very nice but there was only one small pot of clotted cream between 2 people and the little eclairs were very dry and the other highlight of the tea was the little quiche. The staff were lovely but i think that the Villa needs to either get a grip of the overall Afternoon tea experience or give up as a bad job.

I stayed here for 5 nights as a solo diner. Twice in the restaurant and 3 times in the bar area. All was good, the restaurant was very good apart from one thing - on both visits I ordered an extra portion of Savoy cabbage but the second portion was minuscule - its size/price would have been questionable in a London fine dining restaurant. However, when I questioned it all was good - i got an extra half portion and the cost was taken off my bill. This experience will not put me off at all! I even enjoyed the dessert which is a rare event for me. In the words of Arnie “I’ll be back!”

We visited this restaurant with friends who live in Wharton. This is one of their go-to places for special occasions. They have told me the story of how he proposed to her here many years ago. And they are still married! The meal was tasty and we were all happy with our selections. It is so hard to get vegetables when traveling in England so I really appreciated the Greek salad. Other people in the party had the steak burgers and fish and chips. The food was wonderful--we even liked the ketchup! The treacle pie and sticky toffee pudding met our expectations as well. It is a great place to take guests visiting from America--so much charm.

We treated my parents to dinner midweek in the main restaurant and were absolutely delighted with the whole experience. In particular I would comment on the beautiful presentation and care taken in the food prep. All our dishes ( between us we covered the majority of the a la carte menu) were well executed; the highlights were the brisket or scallops starters, ox cheek main and white chocolate sphere dessert (which put my mum into raptures). If you live locally, I would compare quality to "12 restaurant" in Thornton but at a lower price point, and if you have a Taste Card it represents exceptional value. We eat out regularly and have historically found the Villa a bit hit and miss but on present form I can highly recommend a visit.

Have eaten here a few times now with family and the food has been consistently good. Unfortunately we have been seated each time near or opposite to the rear bar area where the staff stand all the time so you feel very 'watched' which spoilt it a bit.Other tables deeper into the rear restaurant looked a lot nocer and more private to worth asking for one of these for a nicer dining experience. The only bad experience we had here was when the kids finished school/college for the summer as it was absolutely packed with kids in school uniforms taking up the whole of the outside front and side seating area as well as some inside tables. The volume of kids was a bit intimidating when we had to pass them all to enter the hotel into the bar area. Seeing lots of young people in uniforms drinking bottles of cider and glasses of wine also made us wonder about under age drinking.

We chose The Villa for our sons Naming Ceremony as we wanted a beautiful setting, nice food and less stress with the organisation of the event. We achieved the first two and all the waiting on staff were excellent and so was the food. We were disappointed with the coordination of the event. There was no direction (we'd had three meetings with the events staff at The VIlla beforehand to go over all the times.) we also arrived an hour before our guests to go over last minute changes and to check everything and get baby changed The Villa were kind enough to provide us with a room to get changed in which was appreciated. However, the drinks reception was being set up after our guests had arrived which was embarrassing. Our guests were wandering and scattered all over the building (including being sat in the room where the ceremony was about to take place) instead of being directed to the drinks reception and for us to welcome them. I felt the events staff needed prompting a lot for example, set up when we got there, background music after the ceremony, to set up the tea and coffee station and being around to tell people the food was ready (my mum went around all the tables and did this for us) and as a result the whole event felt last minute, rushed and amateur when a lot of time, effort and money had gone into the day. A few simple things being done on time would've made the day flow and left us with a great impression of the day. Lovely venue, friendly bar and waiting on staff but poor planning and we will not be booking any future events here as a result.

The Villa is a lovely location especially on a balmy summers day; the interior is equally welcoming in other seasons however and I'm sure with the fires lot a winter visit would be nice. We had a couple of courses each and only one of the four dishes was slightly under a very good standard, although it was the accompaniment, not the fish itself which didn't hit the spot. The fillet steak was perfectly cooked blue which can so often be done wrong, and they had a couple of interesting ales on tap. Service was attentive, restaurant was probably 1/2 full (we dined late) and there appeared to be a wedding reception on which didn't affect the dining room in this case.

This was our second Sunday Lunch visit after a long absence as The Villa is now primarily a Wedding Venue and we have arrived several times for a meal only to see a small sign at the bottom of the drive stating that the pub and restaurant were closed to the public due to a wedding booking. The first of our two recent visits went reasonably well though the service was better than the food quality which was average. as for the most recent visit we were very disappointed though again the service was good. However the Sunday lunch was frankly very poor in terms of food quality. the two starters ( soup and ham terrine) were good and one main course (sea bass) was also pretty good though the portion size was very small (1 small fillet). My partner's roast beef was appalling with probably a third completely inedible consisting of sinew which wasn't capable of being cut. the Yorkshire Pudding was also inedible (stone cold and unpleasant) and the vegetables and gravy were merely tepid. Extra vegetables were provided at our request and this portion was at least served at reasonable temperature. we told at least three of the staff when asked that we were very disappointed but no reduction was offered on the bill. Last time for us both as the value for money was extremely disappointing though we both like the venue and the service was fine.

The starter was average and nothing that I couldn't knock up at home. Three of our party went for the roast beef, it was tasty enough but the child like portions didn't go down well. At that point the service stopped as we had to prompt every next stage of our meal very poor service from staff that seemed not to like being prompted. I have reviewed the hotel and restaurant before but has I have been to another recent event I can't do both again within a 3 month period. As the hotel experience was just the same I thought that I would review the dining experience in isolation. The experience begins at 7 where we meet in the bar area for wine and canapés. A little disappointed that we didn't start with a sparkling wine but with a chardonnay instead. Saying that the wine was delicious. The canapés consisted of a goats cheese encroute, a bouillabaise and a duck bonbon. The encroute and bonbon were delicious, but the bouillabaisse was not to my liking - a little too fishy. We were lead through to the main dining area, and this time we had friends with us to join in the experience. The starter was a seared cod with ras al hanout, lime and chilli on lentil dahl and pak choi. The wine to go with it was a voignet. The starter was very nice but lacked the warm chilli hit that you might expect. The voignet was nice and sweet which seemed to compliment the dish well - unfortunately this was the last time this marriage seemed to work. The next course was a rabbit terrine with a delicious mayonnaise with a Pinot Noir to compliment it. The dish itself was very nice, but I found rabbit terrine lacking flavour and it definitely needed the mayonnaise to lift it. The wine however I found to be over powering. The first mouthful was a real assault on your palate which perhaps is the reason why there appeared to be a lack of flavour in the dish. The main course was BBQ beef brisket (Texas style). I understand that brisket is a cheap cut of meat and that it requires a lot of time of slow cooking to achieve a nice moist beef with lots of flavour. Unfortunately this was not achieved, it was a little chewy and lack flavour. The BBQ sauce had to be used to impart any flavour rather it being used to compliment it. The Zinfandel which accompanied the course, yet again was immensely overpowering and once again negated any flavour of the cooking. And finally the cheese board arrived with a selection of Lancashire cheeses, ranging from blue cheese and mature cheddar to more creamy goats cheese. This was paired with a Merlot which had nice soft tones to it. This time it was cheese that overpowered the wine - very disappointing. The overall experience was once again enjoyable and it gave me the opportunity to indulge in the thoughts that I could be a food critic. As this is the second time that I've been to an event like this, would I go again? The answer is yes as it gives me the opportunity to try wines that I wouldn't necessarily try, particularly at a retail cost of £25, and also a 5 course meal with food that isn't on the menu. The next one is in October.

This time we ordered a bar snack as we were told the restaurant was fully booked although it looked empty. We waited a full hour after we ordered and still no food, we couldn't walk out as we had already paid so we asked where the food was and were told it wouldn't be long. We waited another 10 minutes before it arrived, how long does it take to cook fish and chips! We were hoping it would be something special after the long wait but it was just like it said on the menu, fish and chips with a few mushy peas on the side! Won't be visiting again any time soon!

The food is well cooked, inventive and beautifully presented. The two course £10 lunch and set menu dinner is a real bargain and the standard of cuisine is great. My mother love it here and she is picky as only a Northern old dear can be. The trouble is that even if you are the only people in the dining room service still takes an age. I've counted out over two and a half hours for an evening meal from seating till bill on a very quiet Tuesday night. It's not a bother to us when we have nothing else planned of an evening but I can see this really annoying others. Not stayed here so cannot comment on accommodation but food is well worth it. And in my humble opinion worth the over long wait for it to arrive.

There's a short a la carte menu and a seasonal menu with some very interesting choices. We all chose from the seasonal menu which is fantastic value. I had sardines as a starter; beautifully presented and very tasty. For the main course I chose the duck breast which was absolutely gorgeous. Dessert was lemon drizzle cake, making its first appearance on the menu. Excellent.Service was under-stated and attentive throughout the meal. I thought the menu looked a cut above when I looked on-line, but that can always be deceptive. Typical starter: confit belly pork with black pudding, pear and blue cheese croquette, main: braised blade of Northern Gold beef, saute mushrooms, rhubarb pure, cabbage and bacon. This place has the air of a country house catering for larger weddings and has plenty of rooms, but it seems the Chef has some ambition. I called in mid-week recently with wife, son and mum. Son and I had neck of lamb, the ladies confit of duck. Everything was very good or excellent, from starters to puddings - serious cooking - not quite michelin star, but not a million miles away. The wine list looked good with a range of prices from reasonable to very special occasion. Even more impressive were the food prices - 19 PDS for two courses, 25 PDS for three. However, at lunch or from 6 to 7pm (which is when we ate) this reduces to 14 PDS and 18 PDS. There can't be any better value anywhere than this! Very few in the restaurant on this evening, and service was good. I'm not sold on the heavy gothic style of the interior, and a little investment wouldn't go amiss, but this pales into insignificance if this standard of food is maintained at these prices. We went back a few days later and tried the bar menu (served all day), Quality was again good - I had an excellent burger, the wife had fish and chips, but value didn't really compare to the restaurant, especially if eating early!I'll be going back to see if the quality is maintained!

Mothers Day lunch was disappointing. We were ushered into a room at the side of the bar and not in the restaurant despite the fact I had booked this in January. They had put up tables out of the marquee and we were so squashed in by the time everyone was sat down it was difficult to get to and from our table. The food was being served from an area in the marquee which resulted in the door being left open and we were freezing, we had an 85 and a 90 year old on the table and they were cold. We had our meal which was nothing special and left before coffee. To add insult to injury we were not offered the Mothers Day gifts. We have done Mothers Day here for the last 3 years and are regular customers in the restaurant. Such a shame.

On a cold windy Tuesday evening it was a warming experience to be welcomed by most attentive bar staff on entering The Villa. Pre - meal drinks were served promptly with a smile. The restaurant was quiet in contrast to the rest of the premises. The quality of the food was exceptional, the glassware and linen were set out to the highest standards. Particularly impressive were the home - made rolls which accompanied the first course. All the food served to our party was home - cooked and cooked to perfection. The staff were always interested in satisfying our every need and were genuinely interested in feed - back after each course.( No pun intended )The menus were varied, catered for all tastes and were competitively priced. There was a small informatory leaflet detailing future events on each table in a most discreet style. At the end of the evening we left feeling genuinely pampered by the whole experience and keen to return. The prices encourage a return and not just for special occasions. Most highly recommended

Very disappointed, went in 2008 a party of 10, we all had a lovely meal, plenty of wine all on the biil. and my partner and I stayed the night. Excellent then so went back on our experience two years ago, Rib eye steak awful, full English breakfast was so meagre the egg covered it all. and very expensive in comparison to the 2008.

Sitting by an open fire after a busy day drinking a martini surrounded by wood cladded walls with easy listening music - life seemed rather good! Team this with pleasant attentive service and very tasty bar food and there is much to recommend the Villa. Imaginative menu with specials on Wednesdays and Fridays delivers fresh and satisfying food. Leather sofas are the finishing touch. There is also a more formal dining area that delivers high quality fare. Go - you won't be disappointed.

Went to the Villa for the first time in years and was very impressed. The restaurant is excelent and great value. The staff were attentive but not in your face and the whole atmosphere was relaxed and calming. The food was imaginative and superbly presented. Not big portions but nice ballance size. A three course meal does not leave you feeling bloated. The wine list is very good too with some different wines.... we tried a Turkish red and were very pleasantly supprised.Overall for 85 quid for 2 courses, wine and pre dinner drinks for two, outstanding value.

It's 10 year since our last disasterous visit to the Villa and we swore never again! However after hearing rave reviews from friends and colleagues alike we thought we'd give it another go now it's under new ownership and we love the chef, Nigel Smith. The staff were excellent, very friendly but professional and attentive, and knew the menu items when we asked for clarification. I didn't like the table they showed us to and requested a window one instead and we were moved without a problem and with a smile. The food was excellent to the point where we had difficulty choosing as everything looked fabulous, and tasted it when our choices arrived. Our only gripe was the cost of the wine which we felt was excessive - our usual choice was considerably more expensive here than in other local restaurants which was disappointing. The Sunday lunch menu which we had was excellent value for money so overall, excellent!
