Just returned from an overnight stay at Hencotes where we enjoyed Wine tasting and a tour with the wonderful Brian 🥰 his knowledge and passion was infectious and a great way to start our minibreak. The restaurant was gorgeous and the staff so attentive and friendly, nothing was too much effort. Our accommodation was faultless and the hot tub was a gorgeous way to finish the day. Our evening meal was absolutely delicious and the restaurant atmosphere had a cosy laid back feel even though it was busy which I loved. We both slept really well and the bed was super comfortable. A hamper was dropped off outside with breakfast supplies which was a lovely touch. We will 100% be returning in the near future for another visit. We had a really wonderful time 😊

Beautiful dining room with fantastic views across the Shropshire Hills making for a nice setting for a birthday meal However the food for the evening meal was average at best. The falafels were dry and weren’t as good as falafels from Aldi. I doubt they were made in house. The accompaniments were meagre and limited. The steak was just average and just about warm with the sauce arriving late. For the price we were very disappointed with the standard offered. The chef needs to up their game with a bit more imagination given the setting and the price. Service was okay but nothing special. Food was slow to arrive but luckily the company at the table was good.

The main meal was very poor. The falafel was dry and dominated the whole plate as there was very little else to accompany it. For £26 I would expect something with a big more creativity, style and flavour. Pudding was absolutely huge in comparison. Myself and two friends all ordered the same thing and none of us could finish it. Staff were nice but there was absolutely no atmosphere in the restaurant and hardly anyone there which was disappointing for a Friday evening. It was an all round disappointing experience

I had my wedding here over the August bank holiday weekend and I COULD NOT have picked a better venue!! The venue itself, the views, the staff, the co-ordinators, the food were all 10/10, I have had so many compliments on how much my guests enjoyed the day. The wedding had to be moved inside due to weather concerns a few hours before the ceremony, and I have had feedback about how professional the staff were in moving everything indoors, for example checking the lighting and running rehearsals themselves to make sure everything still goes to plan. All the big and small details of the day were planned to such precision, my guests with dietary requirements were looked after and had their own canapés, meals and evening pizzas amended for them. The band also fed back how welcomed and looked after they felt at the venue. I understand there is a new front of house/ service manager who has recently started- he was there on the day and the day after to welcome myself and the guests and had a real impact on making sure we felt welcomed and overseeing the running of service- he was a real credit to the venue! The wedding and events co-ordinator and assistant co-ordinators have been there supporting me and answering all my questions every step of the way- they are also a real credit to the venue and made my life so much easier! We also stayed at the Grange with the wedding party the night before and night of the wedding- again, the facilities, cleanliness and rooms were all 10/10. Everyone was so impressed at how beautiful the rooms and views were, I would really recommend staying here. Thank you Hencote for making my wedding a 10/10 day and something that I will remember as being one of the best days of my life, aswell as being able to share it with all my family and friends.

Accommodating does not quite cover the exceptional service and contented stay my friend and I experienced. Joined by a large 10 month old fury friend we were worried about leaving him in the accommodation whilst we were on a Vinyard and Wine Tasting Tour, conducted by Max. We did not want to upset other guests should Meeko cry whilst we were out. Worry not, we were informed he could join us! Max was a great host, very knowledgeable and considerate of all the guests taking part on the tour. I think everyone would agree that we all left the tour having learnt something that we can share when enjoying a bottle of wine in the future. Meeko, the Lupine, also joined us in the main restaurant for breakfast and our evening meal. As a ten month old pup, he was able to experience the busy and noisy setting of a bar, lay down and listen to the hustle and bustle of a restaurant. The experience given to us and Meeko enhanced our stay so very much. Meeko was treated like royalty, offered water and treats on so many occasions. The most welcoming, homely stay away from home that I have had in a long time. Thank you!!!

The tour was thorough, delivered by Thomas, who was warm, welcoming, knowledgeable and very accommodating with questions, photographs and conversation. He was keen to speak to everyone and include everyone's previous knowledge. The tasting was fabulous and a real treat. It gave us an insight into how fabulous this new, flourishing English wine industry is. We, as the tourists, are very privileged to have witnessed this industry in what is essentially its infancy. We had high expectations for this meal as the website builds up the quality of the food. The location was beautiful. We had a gorgeous table overlooking the vineyard and Shrewsbury. The restaurant is very well decorated and the toilets spotless. The staff were lovely too. Unfortunately the main coursr food was disappointing. The starters were good, as was the dessert but spending £90 on the Chateaubriand for 2, we expected high quality, on par with Marco Pierre White as the cost was similar. Sadly the meat was dry, the sauces were like water. I sent mine back and got a slightly thicker consistency but then less than half of the small jug. It was really disappointing - and an expensive disappointment.

The standout part of our meal was just how shockingly bad the service was. For the incredible surroundings, beautiful restaurant and interiors, it is such a shame especially at this price point. There were a couple of great junior staff who did their best but it was really surprising. The restaurant is stunning, absolutely breathtaking views over the vineyards and countryside, one of the best you'll see in the area. The food was magnificent but took a long time to arrive. No one checked on us during the meal, to check either food or take a drinks order throughout our entire meal, which took around 3 hours from start to finish. We had to go to the bar to get drinks ordered ourselves at one point! We went for Sunday roast so had expected it to be a bit smoother. The restaurant wasn't extremely busy but it appeared that all tables had a similar wait. The service really hampered our experience but if this is improved, this place would easily be a luxury 5 star experience.

We paid our deposit on arrival on 28th March and are still yet to receive it back after numerous emails & trying to speak to someone but the phone always going to answerphone this is a massive problem! Our first time visiting here and what a beautiful place it is. We enjoyed a glass of wine looking out over the most stunning view before we joined Brian for his wine tour and tasting. This was the most fun and informative wine tour we’ve done, the wine was served in very healthy measures and all delicious. We’d also opted for the cheeseboard to accompany the wines and I’m so glad we did, the people who didn’t were looking on very enviously when it arrived. We bought a few bottles of our favourites to take home to enjoy but we’ll definitely be back to enjoy more drinks on the terrace.

Hencote was my first choice for the venue of my best friend’s family hen party. It’s the most beautiful setting for any celebration and it didn’t disappoint. Vivienne & the team have been so helpful from start to finish and helped make my vision come to life. We hired the private room which we decorated ourselves and opted for a brunch table, which was absolutely delicious (pictured below). We had two activities which the guests could choose from to suit budget, these were wine tasting and cocktail making as well as a late lunch in the main dining room. Both activities were fantastic. The wine tour was very interesting and it was so nice to learn more about the Vinyard and to try the different wines. The cocktail making was a hit especially the Espresso Martini!! The food we had in the main restaurant was again delicious and the service from the restaurant team was very attentive and friendly. I could say so many other nice things about the day as it genuinely was perfect start to finish. Thank you so much Vivienne & the Team @ Hencote

The wife was given birthday present of Wine Tour and Sunday lunch at Hencote, and have to admit had never heard of the vineyard even though live so close. On arrival the views are stunning what a hidden gem this is. We were told due to the weather that we could not walk around the estate but all the tour would be one from inside which at the time was disappointing, but the views from where we were sitting in the restaurant over all of the vines and land made up for it. There was a small group which made the experience feel personal and the wines were very nice. Have to say what made the experience was Lesley the tour guide she was knowledgeable of Hencote wines and manufacturing process, local history and kept us entertained with many fun stories and really made the day The end of the experience was a Sunday lunch which was up there with the best i have had. So great day had by all.

We booked the wine tasting experience on a pre Christmas deal two for one the cost being £37. We have been for a meal before which was nice and the staff are very pleasant. 6 of us went the group consisted of 14 people and a tour guide who works on the vineyards. Nice lad very knowledgeable. I guess we weren’t expected to be outside for some of it and would have dressed more appropriately if this had been highlighted. I think there was a total of 4 bottles of wine between 14 of us so don’t go expecting a generous amount. We opted for the cheese board which was pleasant and we were given more crackers when requested. 2 bottle of tap water on the table for 10 was a little light and I requested more but felt awkward one of the cheeses was very strong and I needed it. If I had have paid £37 a head I would have been annoyed but as it was an offer I guess you get what you pay for. We went into Shrewsbury and had lunch there following this, a nice experience but wouldn’t do it again.

This was booked for a birthday , plus family from Australia visiting. On arriving this place looked a bit uninviting.Buildings that looked like Portacabins were situated in the area. In side its lovely, clean and inviting. The service from a young lad was good. He answered all our questions and had a good knowledge of the menu. The lady server who spoke with a strong foreign accent was miserable and abrupt. Definitely not a person to be front of house. I had ribeye steak with 3 times cooked chips. Most of our table has steak and not one of us enjoyed it. One person even sent it back because he asked for medium and it was more like extra rare. The meat was chewy and tough. Ive had better steak from morrisons and its been cooked better. The chips seemed to taste like yesterday's chips. And the peppercorn sauce was thin and tasteless. I had lemon meringue alaska for pudding and it was OK. This place seems to be over priced, and trying to hard to be something its not. The menu is pompous and misleading because the food is bordering on below mediocre and a complete waste of money.

Edit: I have randomly noticed the owners have removed their reply.. It was rude and totaly against everything that happened My family had the unfortunate experience of booking a reservation for a party of 16 at this establishment back in 2020. Due to the Covid pandemic, our plans were put on hold, which was understandable given the circumstances. However, what followed was a series of disappointments and unprofessional behaviour. When the restrictions were finally lifted and we reached out to reschedule our reservation, they did not have availability that suited our family members.. so we simply asked for a refund. To make matters worse, during my brothers communication with a staff member named Kavanna, we were promised a refund for the deposit we had paid. We patiently waited for months, expecting the refund to be processed in due course. However, it became evident that they had no intention of returning our money promptly. Numerous emails and countless phone calls were made in an attempt to resolve the matter. Each time, we were met with delays, excuses, and false promises. It was an exhausting and frustrating process, and we felt like our concerns were being disregarded. Finally, in June 2023, after persistent efforts and a significant amount of time wasted, we received the long-awaited deposit refund. However, what shocked us the most was the complete lack of apology or acknowledgment for the inconvenience caused. It was as if holding onto our money for years without any valid reason was a normal practice for them. Such unprofessional behaviour is unacceptable. It not only reflects poorly on the establishment but also demonstrates a disregard for customer satisfaction and basic ethical standards. I would strongly advise others to think twice before considering this place for any future reservations.

The headline: do not book this place for group trips! I’ve finally mustered up the courage to post a review about this place. I’ve honestly never experienced such strange and unprofessional behaviour in my life. I booked The Grange for 13 of us, and had had regular contact with the venue about things like getting a private chef. They said it was against their policy, and so we asked if they could provide a chef for the evening - they agreed. Roll on *three weeks* before the weekend, and they contacted us to tell us they couldn’t provide the chef. I asked if we could, therefore, find one ourselves and they said only if we got them to sign certain waivers and we did a full kitchen inventory (amongst a lot of other paperwork). We said yes, and everything seemed to be fixed (after a lot of internet searching and panicking). A week before the weekend and they contacted us to say the owner has said we weren’t allowed to have the chef after all- with over a grand paid and also non-refundable. No apology, no explanation, no attempt to solve the issue other than offering their restaurant (shock). We arrived at The Grange (a bit browbeaten already!), which is beautiful, and saw that the owner’s house was at the back of it. He stood in his driveway and stared at us as we arrived - we waved, he didn’t - he stared. As a group of women we felt extremely uncomfortable. This happened a lot over the weekend. We also then received an email from reception informing us that the owner had seen we had left a light on from 5pm - 6am. This was supposed to be a relaxing trip, and honestly what I’ve mentioned is the tip of the iceberg. We felt watched, on edge, and I was pretty worried for our deposit because the place seemed out to grab at any money possible. It’s a shame because it has the bones of the most amazing place. Hopefully someone else will buy it and it’ll reach its full potential!

We visited Hencote yesterday for a family meal. There were 4 adults and 4 kids in total. It was quite disorganised to start with and unfortunately it didn't get any better than that. When we sat down, 3 different people came for us to take our order even though we already have pre-booked our order which the booking team insisted for us to do. It took a while for our drinks to arrive, even though we have ordered this at the bar. The food was spectacular - I couldn't fault it! Kudos to the chef. However, the service was very disappointing. The staff communication appeared lacking, as no one exactly knew what was going on on our table. The 2nd order of drinks came so late. We nearly finished our food when they arrived. One of us ordered a cocktail at the end of the meal, but didn't get his drink at all. We couldn't understand why this was the case as the restaurant was not busy. Very disappointing service from such a prestigious place.

Disappointing....... We had such high hopes for this restaurant. The sweeping elevated approach to this wonderfully modern, purpose built dining room set on a hill looking over Shrewsbury promised so much. There were positives ( the beef Wellington was beautifully cooked for example) but overall this was a disappointing experience. Table booked for 19.30 on a Saturday night. Arrived at 19.20 and were asked to have a drink at the bar as the table was not ready. No problems so far but this false sense of hopeful anticipation eroded quickly. At 20.00 ( still sat at the bar, with three other parties who had arrived before us and still not seated) we were asked if we would like to see the menu. At the time of booking we had mentioned we had to be away by 21.00 so asked if the table was ready. Apparently it had been all along so a wasted 30 mins..... Menus arrived. Bizarrely small type face. Bizarre choices (top tip, if you are a vegetarian this is not the place for you; beef in various guises is the order of the day). Ordered at 20.11. Starters came at 20.43. Main courses at 21.08. Glacially slow service with all the urgency of a museum. Couldn't be bothered and had no time anyway for deserts and coffees, so we cannot comment on these. It is such a shame; this place should be full on a Saturday (which it was not) with a coherent and legible menu with expedient service. It is difficult to see why we would return.

We arrived to a unlit car park in the pitch black, not clear where to go at all. All of our party drove to the front entrance to be met with forklifts and delivery vans at 7.45pm at night. Once we found the car park and made our way in the dark to the entrance. The woman greeted us commented on how lovely my coat was but didn’t offer to hang it up so it sat draped on the floor by our table. The service was slow, considering there was only 5 tables for a Friday night. The water annoyed me. We didn’t have the choice for tap water we had to pay £1.50 pp for water in a glass bottle. The menu was ok, struggled to choose the starter and when it came it was very underwhelming. I actually thought it was very bland and the different accompaniments didn’t work at all. Our main arrived and they forgot to order our sides so we waited 10 mins for those (the gentleman did kindly take this off our bill) but our food was cold by the time our sides arrived and trust me you needed them! Once again slow service, lots of staff standing around but not really doing much. We had a hot drink and decided against pudding. The total cost: £118 per couple. In my opinion, not worth it. I don’t mind paying more for a meal out but I expect impeccable food and definitely the same level of service. I have been here for a drink before in the daytime and once again the service was poor but the view made up for it. Probably won’t be returning but glad I have tried it.

We had a fabulous time. We initially attended the 11:30 wine tour and tasting. Our guide, Lesley was very knowledgeable, fun and very attentive. A great and educational introduction to Hencote's wines and British wine production in general. We were pleasantly surprised to find the wines were excellent and the equal to those from other nations. Their cost is very competitive. We then had lunch which was excellent beautifully prepared and presented. Also, we must mention the superb waiting on staff and all the staff in general. They were all professional, approachable and polite. The icing on the cake must be the amazing view towards Shrewsbury from the dining room.

We stayed at Hencote to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and had the most wonderful time. We stayed in the glamping village which was amazing and had breakfast and £40 each towards our evening meal. All of the food was fantastic and we were well and truly looked after. We did take our puppy with us too, who was welcomed and able to eat with us! Would definitely return. Thank you so much for making it such a special weekend! :)

We attended a vineyard, winery and wine-tasting at Hencote. Our guide, Brian was superb, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the business and what a great story Hencote has to tell. Beautiful scenery and a very modern winery and contemporary restaurant, decking and terrace. Definitely worth a visit on a sunny day! We didn’t dine on this occasion but will definitely go back and try the restaurant. It looked great. The wines were excellent! I particularly liked the LXX sparkling white and the Mark III red. They also produce white and rosé, all very nice. Nice cheese board too!!

Went here for a friend's wedding, good location, clean and nicely decorated on the inside. Outside is ugly...a grey industrial building. I had a fantastic time but this was more due to the people I was with rather than where I was. £4 a shot, £12 gin and tonic and around £10 for a glass of wine.

Just returned from a one night glamping/wine tasting/dinner and breakfast experience which was overall excellent. The lodge was lovely especially the huge bathroom and the wine tour/tasting was fun and interesting. The restaurant (particularly the views) was fabulous with a great atmosphere and decor. The only let down, unfortunately, was the actual food. Starters were OK but my hake main course (£26) tasted like a block of salt and my husband's lamb (£27) was rather chewy. I told the waiter (the couple on the next table had also complained) and was immediately offered a replacement but as there was nothing else I fancied, the manageress insisted on bringing me a lovely cheese board and my husband had a passable rice pudding dessert. The voucher included £40pp towards the meal and we also had a bottle of wine with the meal and some drinks beforehand but when we asked for the bill we were told that we didn't owe anything! Breakfast was delicious although, as they were setting up for a wedding, service was rather erratic. All in all I would definitely recommend but chef must get his act together.

Took my family and freinds for a birthday Dinner. The location is Fantastic and the view from inside the restaurant was Breath-taking, however what an anti-climax when the food was delivered and the expense of it...... It was a shocker . The food is was mediocre, cold and overly priced for what they served. I should have known better, when we were asked to pay a £30.00 deposit for each member on the table, then further aggravated by the request to pre-order our meals two days before the booking so that they could prepare. Which turns out, as the waiter explained, that the meals will take 30 min as they did not recieve our pre-order meal form ??? Wow!! All our effort and the pre- meal order was not found!! I should have gathered from the beginning that this is a resturant that has no faith in themselves and spends more time anticipating ways to harness the patrons, in fear that they might not pitch . It was so dissapointing and yet they have the potential to be so much Better. How unfortunate. Yours truly, let Down " once bitten twice shy " Wade Miller

What a difference 12 months makes! This place has rapidly gone down hill! Poor quality food, over priced (let's be fair things have gone up but not by this level!!) , just average food for ridiculous prices ! "It has a lovely view", just doesn't cut it for the poor level of food. Oh and £40 for a half decent red is also eye watering and it is only half decent. Won't be visiting again as it seems to be absorbing it's owners arrogance. EDIT: Not sure how the January and June mix up on my review on T.A. occurred. Of course I wouldn't leave a 6-month gap before reviewing! I did indeed visit in June and stand by my comments, but must thank the person replying for pointing it out and validating my point about the arrogance that seeps through the place. It was June, it was your gold star, gold tick chef and it was average and over priced!
