We usually eat at Monsoon however wanted thought we'd try The Taj for a change. We'd hadn't booked but there were a few empty tables. Good fresh & warm poppadom & nice pickle chutney selection. chicken rezala & tikka shashlik both tasty & chicken was tender. Rice, nann & side of saag paneer also good. The only negative was the lighting, the room is way too bright!

The Taj was packed on New Years Eve, which was a good sign. Some speciality dishes on the menu, plus all the old favourites. Really enjoyed my meal. Bottled Kingfisher beer. £32 per head. Cards accepted.

Stewed stodge. Service was good but oh the main course curries - stewed within an inch of their lives and certainly not freshly prepared. There’s no excuse for serving food that bad. Left 75% of the meal, paid the bill and did a quick exit. Sorry Taj but we’ll not be returning.

I think this is the best Indian restaurant in the area - the food is delicious and freshly prepared. The staff are friendly and the price seems very fair. We always have a good meal when we come here - well worth the drive out from Basingstoke. Highly recommended.

At the moment we can only get a take away and this was by far the best we have had for a very long time. Far superior to the other curry house in the village. The Taj has certainly upped their game. We were five and every dish was delicious and perfectly cooked. So happy we can get such a high standard to curry here and delivered to your door!

Well done to the guys at The Taj, Hartley Wintney for a great “ Saturday Night Takeaway” Food was great as usual and great friendly service. We are regulars to the restaurant but first time having a takeaway. The food was still hot when we got home and we live in Ash Vale! Worth the journey for good food. Will certainly be back for another takeaway soon and hopefully sitting in the restaurant sometime soon when circumstances allow. Keep up the good work, Stay Safe, Regards Graham & Fee.

Got a takeaway from the Taj as a late quick dinner. The food was ready in 20 mins so the service was quick. Got the food home and the chicken korma I ordered was awful! The chicken was so tough and dry it was completely inedible! It really isn’t the first time the quality of the food served has been completely below adequate! We avoid going into the restaurant because the staff have previously been very rude and forgot about us, to the point be had to go to the bar to get our own drinks! I am not usually one to write reviews but it is becoming impossible to find a decent Indian! It is meant to be a treat having a takeaway but this was anything but! Very disappointing! :(

We decided to use the Viceroy rather than our usual Indian so that we could walk home. We have used them before for takeaways and have always found the service to be reasonable. On first arrival we were catered for very well. The poppadums and first drinks arrived promptly but the chutneys are not the best I have ever had which starts the meal poorly. The main meals arrived in good time and weren’t of bad quality but having eaten in a fantastic Indian in Camberley any other curry does seem to lack much flavour and freshness.

We have heard mixed reports from friends about the restaurant recently but our experience has always s been very good including our most recent visit just before Xmas. We find the food to be of high quality and with plenty of alternative curries to try. Our advice is to try something different to the same old traditional curry dishes. Also the chef will always make a vegetarian version of any curry on the menu.

I'm a local resident and have enjoyed many meals here previously. Tonight was different. Staff were surly and disinterested, my partner sent his main back twice with the same hair in the dish. The bill was presented with no consideration for the issues during the meal. When challenged we were told that the dish was replaced anyway, and then grudgingly, that they were going to remove the charge for it anyway. Left a thoroughly bad taste and I won't be returning.

We booked the restaurant for a late meal after putting on a play at the Victoria Hall. There were around 20 of us and my over-riding impression was that they couldn't care less and the sooner we left the better. They served our main course, grabbed our plates. We were not offered dessert or coffee and as we left I overhead one of the staff saying "right, they have all gone now". It was a deeply disappointing, not to mention upsetting experience. They just wanted our money and for us to go as soon as possible. I appreciate it was quite late, but they knew that when we booked. If they didn't want us at 11.00 they should have turned the booking down. I was a regular customer and I will never consider eating there again.

Regrettably we gave this place a 2nd chance after a bad first visit. The owner is incredibly rude, reminiscent of Basil Fawlty. Our reservation seemed to be a huge inconvenience to him. I have to say that other staff are courteous and obviously trying their best despite being run off their feet. Every request takes at least half an hour. We sat at our table for 15 minutes with no menus or offer of a drink. Food is ok. One dish we sent back as it was cold. It returned 30 seconds later, having clearly been put in the microwave, still cold. Defiantly won’t be returning to Balti Towers.

It was Tuesday night. 7:30 pm. The server was very rude, argued with us about what we ordered! The Prawn Biriyani had about 3 shrimp in it, not prawns! as with the prawn curry, tiny shrimp in a sauce. I asked three times for Mango Chutney, by the time it finally came, my food was cold. The restaurant was empty except for a table right next to ours who were celebrating, and very loud, we couldn't hear our conversations, they could have been seated away from us as the rest of the place was empty

I decided to come here for a pre-work meal purely because it was the only place in the village that I hadn't already eaten in. I knew that this place had a bad reputation for their level of service, but I didn't know what to expect from the food. Unfortunately this turned out to be the worst thing about the place as almost everything was overly oily. Things were so bad that the sauce with the curry itself was almost entirely oil, while both the bhajis and the kebabs tasted of nothing else. While the service here is noticeably slow for an Indian restaurant, it wasn't all that bad. In fact, the service was probably the best thing about the place as, with the quality of the food being so poor, the prices here are too high for what you receive. The menu here is perhaps a little bit larger than your typical Indian restaurant, which means that there is plenty to choose from. A total of 17 starters gives you plenty to choose from from the off and it is nice to see that around a quarter of these are vegetarian options. However, unlike some other Indian restaurants, there is no vegetarian version of the mixed starter. Once you get past the starters section, the rest of the menu is split into different categories, with tandoori, chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetarian dishes all getting their own sections. The vegetarian section is rather impressive as this offers a number of varied dishes, ensuring that vegetarians aren't just lumbered with side dishes like they are in many other Indian restaurants. While the specialities section looks astoundingly large at first, once you read through it, you soon realise that that a number of the dishes listed here are fairly basic things like chicken tikka masala, lamb jalfrezi and chicken tikka korma. That being said, there is enough variety throughout the menu as a whole, so it's not as though they are lacking anything. Disappointingly the dessert menu here is identical to practically every other Indian restaurant in the UK, simply listing the usual list of pre-packed desserts and they don't offer anything made on the premises. While I was here, after both a plain and spicy papadum with the pickle tray, I opted for the mixed starter followed by the chicken zalzala with a saag and masala naan, before finishing with the caramel parfait for dessert. I also ordered a mango lassi to drink. The mango lassi was very runny, offering a consistency which was barely thicker than milk. I found this to be very poor as it should have been much thicker, having a consistency between milk and yoghurt. The flavour was also weak and it was difficult to taste much of anything at all. What was there seemed to be slightly sweet, but it didn't taste even remotely like mango. To make matters worse, the glass was overloaded with ice cubes, all of which sank to the bottom. These caused the drink to taste of little more than water at the bottom, causing me to have to raise the straw for a stronger flavour. At the very top the drink was more flavoursome but, as described earlier, I still found it to be lacking. The ice also seemed to melt rather quickly and it didn't take all that long for it to mix in with the already runny lassi. The papadums came with the usual selection of onion salad, lime pickle, mango chutney and mint sauce. The plain papadum arrived hot and, judging by its temperature, appeared to have been cooked to order. However, this may have simply been because we arrived as the restaurant opened. Unfortunately it let itself down when it came to texture as this was soft and only slightly crispy. When it came to flavour it seemed okay, but it was merely average. In contrast to the plain one, the spicy papadum was very crispy, although it didn't offer much in the way of spiciness and its flavour was practically identical to the regular one. The onion salad consisted entirely of yellow onion, which unusually came in long strips rather than small pieces. It was also very soft and lacked flavour, tasting like little more than water. The lime pickle contained large pieces of lime, which were extremely soft being almost like mashed potato in terms of consistency. It offered the usual sharp and spicy flavour, but it didn't stand out as being anything other than average, although it was very oily. The mango chutney had a thick sauce, which contained small, soft and mushy pieces of mango. Unfortunately there wasn't much flavour to it and what was there didn't taste anything like mango. It also lacked any kind of sweetness, making this a very unusual mango chutney. The mint sauce was extremely runny, having a consistency exactly like milk. This made it difficult to use on the papadums effectively. It also disappointed when it came to flavour as it simply tasted like plain yoghurt without even the slightest hint of mint. The mixed starter consisted of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, sheek kebab and an onion bhaji, which is served with a side salad. While the chicken tikka was soft, it could most definitely not be described as tender. It was also unusually chewy given its softness, making this a very strange piece of meat. It offered a different texture on the outside, where it was crispy, while the inside was moist. Unfortunately it was impossible to taste the chicken due to the marination, which simply tasted average and did nothing to stand out. While the lamb tikka had tender meat, it was very fatty which gave it a rubbery texture. Again the flavour of the meat was drowned out by the marination, which on this occasion was tangy. Even after chewing things didn't get any better as, while the flavour of the sauce was gone, there was far too much fat in order to taste the meat. The sheek kebab was overly hard on the outside, while the insides were chewy. This tasted absolutely terrible, tasting nothing like meat at all as all I could taste was oil. To make matters worse, they hadn't used any spices at all, which you would usually expect to find in a sheek kebab. The onion bhaji had a thin and crispy outside, while the inside was overly chewy. Much like the kebab, it was impossible to taste the onion due to the excessive amount of oil, although there were at least some spices this time. The side salad consisted mostly of lettuce, but they had also included a small slice of cucumber and tomato along with a small amount of shredded carrot. Unfortunately even the salad was terrible here as all of the salad was soggy and tasted very watery. The chicken zalzala was described on the menu as being a hot curry with a thick and spicy sauce with olives and chillies. However, what I received failed to match this description. The sauce was extremely runny and could not be described as thick in any way at all. If it was thick at one point, it definitely wasn't when it was served, which may have been due to the excessive amount of oil they had used. I have had overly oily food in Indian restaurants before, but this took things to a whole new level as around three quarters of the dish was oil, which went to waste. What little sauce remained was no more than a mushy runny mess. It was no better when it came to flavour as all I could taste was the oil, while it was barely spicy at all despite being described as a hot dish on the menu. Despite the chicken being hard, it was also very rubbery and appeared to be a cheap synthetic meat, similar to what you find in several budget Asian restaurants in the UK. This meat was particularly bad though and stood out as being one of the worst cheap meats that I have ever had, which wasn't helped by the fact that it had no flavour at all. The green olives were soft and had an extremely strong bitter flavour, which was not pleasant in the least. Saying that the dish contained chillies was a bit of a stretch as my dish only contained one, which was mushy and didn't offer anything at all when it came to either flavour or spiciness. Given how terrible the rest of the food was here, I was surprised that the saag and masala naan was not only good, but great. The bread itself was soft, while the spinach inside was slimy. While there was a generous amount of spinach inside, I felt that they could have distributed it better throughout the bread as most of it was located around the edges, leaving the middle somewhat empty. They were also generous with the amount of spices on top. I found that these were the key to this being so enjoyable as they paired exceptionally well with the spinach within, ensuring that at least one thing would be pleasant here. The caramel parfait consists of caramel ice cream coated in chocolate, which is then coated with caramel. The chocolate on the outside was thin and soft and had practically melted when it was served. There didn't seem to be any chocolate either as all I could taste was caramel, which was unfortunately extremely sweet to the point that it was sickly. While the ice cream inside had a nice smooth texture to it, this too was so extremely sweet that it was sickly. To make matters worse, the extreme sweetness was paired with an extremely bitter flavour in the ice cream. These two extreme flavours did not go well with each other at all. This made the dessert so difficult to consume that I couldn't managed more than two spoonfuls of it before deciding that it was best left unconsumed. The restaurant opened 15 minutes early during my visit. Whether this is a regular occurrence at this restaurant, or they opened up because we were waiting outside, I do not know. But it was certainly nice to be able to wait inside as many other restaurants would leave early arrivals waiting outside. While they took our orders for papadums and drinks straight away, we were left waiting for quite a while before they decided to take our food order. As they waited until 18:00, it might have been that they wanted to wait until it was the restaurant's opening time though as things may not have been ready in the kitchen. As I had read the other reviews prior to visiting, I was worried that our food might take a long time to arrive. However, while the service here is slower than most other Indian restaurants, we weren't left to wait all that long with our starters arriving 20 minutes after we ordered them and our main courses only arriving a mere 10 minutes after that.I found the value for money here to be poor as, despite being fairly standard for an Indian restaurant, the poor quality of the food and the use of cheap ingredients means that the prices should be lower than they are. To give a feel for the prices here, you are looking at £4-6 for a starter, while a main course will set you back between £6 and £13. With most of the curries being at the lower end of this scale, it keeps things affordable here. Also, with no dishes costing more than £13, nothing costs too much here so you don't have to worry about spending too much if seafood is your preference. You are then looking at either £3.50 or £3.75 for a vegetable side dish, while rices and breads cost between £2 and £4. Finally you are looking at £4.50 for dessert here, but kulfi is a little cheaper at £3.25.In terms of appearance, the restaurant is pretty plain and simple, with not much going on inside at all. However, the place does a reasonable job as it feels like most other Indian restaurants inside. They have opted for a tan and cream colour scheme, with the walls being predominantly the latter colour. There are several small square paintings inside, all of which are suitably Indian in design but, aside from these, there isn't much else to look at. The only other noteworthy piece of decor is a framed football shirt from one of the local youth teams, who they used to sponsor. Aside from these there are only the standard mirrors used to decorate the place, while the tables and chairs are typical of an Indian restaurant in Britain. In total there are 19 tables inside the restaurant, which should easily be enough to accommodate walk-in customers in a village this size.

We were a little pressed for time so we asked if we could place an order for starters when we sat down and had our drinks orders taken. The food itself is ok ...If you are prepared for a very long wait for it. This is because they give first priority to the take away service to the detriment of their restaurant customers. Also the toilets are an absolute disgrace. The push button water tap for the sink is hanging off the wall and the hand dryer does not work at all. The entire toilet is a health hazard which I shall be reporting to the public health authority. My advice would be pass the viceroy by as it is easy to find a better restaurant anywhere !!

We booked a table for 3, and arrived on time. No notice taken of the booking, given a table in a draught, has to move ourselves. Only 2 tables occupied but despite plenty of staff the service was slow. Very slow. Curry good, but popadoms soft and given the service, just a 3 this time. Could be outstanding, just needs to try a little harder.

Average curry on a quiet Sunday night, plenty of staff but they still couldn't get the bill right. Charged twice for a bottle of wine even after querying they still itemised one bottle of wine in two different ways. Check your bill!

Good service, good choice and average food. Visited on Monday evening and it was very quiet. The food is okay but does not stand out in a very competitive market. Would visit again.

We have been using the viceroy for many years and were always pleased with the service &the quality of the food Also we live in hook where there are 3 Indian restaurants but we choose to drive to Hartley However on the last few occasions we have been massively let down We had guests over for dinner and we had raved about the food to them ,so we ordered it and went to collect .When we got the meal home there were 2 dishes missing when I called up I was told we could have them next time on the houseReally on the house???we had paid for them not to mention the disappointment for the person who's dinner it was.So next time we fancy a curry we decided to give it another goI was impressed when I called they remembered when I said the name and said we could have the dinner on the house Well I thought that is good service this is why we have come back My husband goes to pick up the food they give nothing on the house just don't charge us for the dishes we had missed out on before So we arnt given any compensation What's so everNot to mention this time the curry was very bland and the popperdoms stale. This is how you treat good customers who have spent a lot of money in your restaurant We will now be giving our custom to another curry houseDon't waste your money !!!

Popular 'Indian' (i.e. Bangladeshi) restaurant in Hartley Wintney. Phoned away and picked up a take away. Food is of a high standard and the staff always take care of diners. The menu is extensive, and they have a number of interesting speciality dishes that are worth trying.

Best Indian takeaway we've ever had. Might try eating in soon, but daughter is now vegan, so that could prove tricky! Staff a little chatty amongst themselves whilst we were waiting, to collect, but the food was so good, who cares?

Visited this restaurant about a month earlier and both food and service was good so decided to pay another visit Friday 19th Aug. The restaurant was about half full when we arrived. We were seated very quickly and the usual poppadoms and drinks order. These appeared very quickly. However, it was about 50 minutes we waited before our order was taken. We ordered a chicken Karachi and lamb tandoori. The karahi usually appears still sizzling but this didn't. Unfortunately the chicken was so dry and tough it was difficult to eat. In fact the lamb was more tender, but that was tough to eat too. The rest of the food was ok.We left about half the chicken and lamb on our plates as they really weren't very pleasant to eat. When the waiter went to clear our table I informed him that the chicken karahi was one of the worst meals I had ever been served and that the chicken was dry and tough. He said that I should have complained earlier and they would have replaced the Karahi which was fair comment. However, a chef with any pride in their cooking I don't think would have served such a poor dish.We asked for the bill from another waiter and again made sure they were aware of the poor quality of our meal. There was no reduction in the bill. Another waiter came for payment and I made clear to him that I was disappointed the bill was not reduced for poor quality food. He went away and got the karahi crossed off the bill. However, he also hinted that on Fridays and Saturdays food quality and service are not as good due to the number of people visiting the restaurant. This begs the question that if they know this, why haven't they taken steps to limit the numbers entering the restaurant on those days? Maybe Mr Ramsay needs to pay them a visit!

First visit and all quite good though the chicken chunks appeared to have been re heated and tough and chewy. In fairness we were credited back the cost of that dish. Everything else was fine so will give the chicken another go another time.

This restaurant was recommended to us but I have never been to a place with such poor service and when the food did finally arrive it was luke warm and we had to return it. Took 45 mins to take our order and no main meal for almost 2 hours! When the food arrived it was most definitely NOT worth the wait. We won't be back and I would recommend that you avoid this restaurant at all cost.

This is our local, its a great place to eat in or takeaway! The food is very authentic and we have never had a bad meal. Try the Bombay potatoes with some added chilies for a real taste of India! The only down side to the restaurant is the service, it's not the friendliest of places, there has been many occasion when i have walked in and no one has acknowledged me or said hello, you almost feel like walking out! But! I wouldn't leave till you tried the food, its worth turning a blind eye to the rude service and just eat.

Although plenty of space, we were squeezed in between two ladies to the right, and a family of three to the left, the table if you could call it that, could just about fit two dinner plates to make matters worse the lady to the right of us had a dry cough and every 30 secs was coughing Great start, the food was so so, but the main was disappointing, and hardly worth the money, if you want a relaxing evening you wont find it here, I couldn't wait to get out, better off having a takeaway from the supermarket

My Mother booked this for a special occasion, I was embarrassed for her and the fact she had to stomach through a poor over priced Indian meal.We ordered a prawn and chicken dish which came in 2 flower pots swimming in gravy, the prawn dish looked like chopped rubber the chicken dish was 4 cubes of dry chicken accompanied by the pot of gravy. We ordered 2 paratha which resembled a shammy leather my Father used on his car in the 1960,s. The service was slow and uninspiring my 90 year old Mother could have moved quicker than the waiters! This restaurant survives on the good will of the people of Hartney Wintney they have no where else to go in the village or to compare with. About time the Viceroy upped its game and moved into the 21st century.

We decided to book a table at this Indian rather than go to our usual in the village for a change. Wish we hadn't bothered! It was a Friday night and the table was not ready or set. There were loads of people by the entrance waiting for takeaways and the place was very busy. However, there were no staff anywhere other than doing the takeaways. We waited 50 minutes for our starters - how long does it take to make samosa?? We then sat without any drinks as nobody came to collect th plates or ask if we wanted more drinks. Finally they came with our main course but I had to send my chicken korma back twice as it was dried out and the sauce was vile to say the least. They did take the course off our bill but that hardly compensates for such a poor service and miserable evening. We then decided to just leave but even when we paid they put the machine on in front of us then left so we ended up having to press the button for our receipt ourselves!!!!! What horrendously shoddy service. We eat out a lot and I have never had such a terrible experience. Do not go here - they need more staff, better food and to stop serving takeaways consistently when people are trying to have a meal.

To be quite honest as a local I tend to use the takeaway rather than eat in. The atmosphere is good and the food is excellent and good value. It's authentic rather than 'camp' indian and the food is excellent.

My husbands family have lived in Hartley Wintney for over 20 years and we have eaten here many times over the years. However, it's been sometime since my husband and I have eaten there and the other day a take away was ordered and the food was very disappointing. This wasn't due to being busy as it was virtually empty when we collected at lunchtime in the week. Stale tasting poppadoms, the rice was missed out, and the rest of the dishes tasted bland and pasty like poor quality ready meals. Such a shame so won't be going back.

We ate here with friends last saturday night. We arrived and our table wasn't ready. When we were seated we waited for our drinks order to be taken - we ordered poppodums at the same time. These had arrived and been eaten before anyone came to take our food orders. During this time the bar was getting covered in dirty glasses with no attempt to clear them. One of drinks was wrong and had to be sent back. We ordered a second batch of poppodums which arrived looking like they had been grilled - they had burnt patches!!The starters arrived and were average - but the real issues started with the mains. Half the food arrived cold - and the rice was cold and lumpy. One person rice was missing as were most of the naans. I had tandoori mixed grill which arrived sizzling but the meat was cold in the centre. At this point we had enough and decided to leave before eating our mains. (FEAR OF DELHI BELLY) . We spent 2 hours in the restaurant and only managed to eat starters.I wouldn't go back here and if the restaurant want loyal customers then they need to get their act together.

19:30 booking Sat 16th Jan. I had a close friend coming to stay that I hadn't seen in several years and I was looking forward to a good night and a lovely meal - bad start I chose the Viceroy. I have lived in HW for 20 years and in the last 5 years this restaurant has gone from average to abysmal. We eventually got to order our food an hour - yes 1 hour - after arrival. I know most sensible people would have left before this but being in good company the time passed quickly, despite several requests for our order to be taken.Eventually the food came, luke warm and both sauces looked like they had come from the same pot but with a bit of cream dripped on one.OK so they were busy but good management and planning would have avoided situations like this - look after your customers and the profits will look after themselves!!! I will not be going back. Especially as on complaining to the manager he shrugged and stated they were busy - don't allow so many bookings if you cant deal with them!

We called in just after 6 pm when the restaurant was still empty, having phoned a few minutes earlier. The service was timely and unobtrusive. I followed my son-in-law's suggestion and tried the Chicken Naga. It was great - hot with subtle flavours and the pilau rice was just right. I would definitely return when visiting again.

I cant understand why people return to this place when they can go to the Monsoon down the road. Sometimes I go here because friends invite me but every time its a complete disappointment. This last time the pappadoms were cold and chewy, the pickles were runny but worse was the main course. The menu said lamb bhuna. The waiter when he delivered it said meat bhuna. Yes, you guessed it, it was beef. This is really the bad old days of the Indian restaurant. Mendacious. I would have walked out but I was in company. Regardless it was tough, sinewy and weary. All the meals here are ochre coloured. No variation, they could all be the same for all I know. And , Oh yes, as many people note the staff are surly. When one of are party asked if hot-plates would be provided as at other tables the answer was simply "No" ... Well at least that was an accurate statement. "Meat .... ? " ... give me a break, fellas.

Went here a week ago with my husband. We enjoyed some freshly cooked pappadoms and chutneys to start, then main course of king prawn tandoori, pilau rice and pedhwari nasn - all delicious. My husband had chicken tikka masala, pilau rice, saag paneer, pedhwari naan and pilau rice. All served promptly and our waiter recommended a different lager for my husband to try. Highly recommend for food and service.

Our party of three turned up around 7pm and we were welcomed and eventually taken to a table. We did not book in advance.Shortly after arriving, we were given menus and had our order for drinks taken. The service was generally slow and little care seemed to be given to any customer in the busy restaurant. After viewing the menu for half an hour we flagged a waiter to take our order. Our food arrived very long wait. The food was very good although sadly didn't stay hot for very long. Another disappointment was with clearing the tables. As the food became cold, there was quite a bit uneaten. We were waiting for another age (The members of our party all probably aged and celebrated another birthday we were there so long!) before one of our party in frustration demanded some attention and the table was cleared. We had to wait another age for the bill to come and again for someone to take the payment! We were there for over three hours and ate for around 20 - 30 minutes. While I appreciate the restaurant was busy, there is no forgiving a lack of care for customers even if you just receive an apology for the delays (which we didn't).I am sure this is possibly just one of those experiences and maybe this isn't a typical visit. It was however my visit and the experience I received hence the below par rating. I am unlikely to visit here again.

This has been our local Indian for 8 years now. When we first moved here it was very good, but then over time it became....."not so good".... so we stopped using it. Over the last few weeks we've had a takeaway and eaten in and the food on both occasions was very nice. The dishes were very nicely spiced, well cooked and in the case of the delivery meal, piping hot on arrival. We will be going there again soon.......it seems things are on the up again!
