The Viceroy in Lewes

It was very reassuring to eat here for vegan options. They have a printed vegan menu available upon request. This takes the hassle out of trying to request custom dishes as is the norm elsewhere. One of the few restaurants that offer a vegan onion bhaji which was very appreciated. I can also recommend the Madras. This restaurant is a model example of how to cater for those with dietary requirements - I will be returning!

Recently refurbished. Very good menu with some unusual dishes. Great value. Most dishes available GF and Vegan. No licence so bring your own drink, which keeps the overall price down considerably. Not too busy early in the week so better for a quiet meal if you prefer. Also take away

Great food and super friendly. Impromptu night out and we were really pleased with the food. It’s take your own drink if you’d like wine/beer etc, which is really easy with the local shop nearby if you don’t realise.

We had a takeaway so can’t comment on the atmosphere but we have had a couple of takeaways in recent weeks and have loved them. They have always been really good but we think they may have ta new chef as they seem even better, either way great meal. Thanks and keep it up the good work 😊

Had a takeaway whilst visiting family in the town. I’m predictable and always order the same thing wherever I go to an Indian so have a fairly good idea of what I am getting. Whilst the Korai chicken was lovely it was very bland which was disappointing however all the other dishes were fine.

This is a BYO establishment, which I would recommend as the price of soft drink is ridiculous.

We bought a take away of three dishes. The vegetable madras was ok, but the king prawn bhuna and chicken jalfrezi were terrible. The 'king' prawns seemed to be just large ordinary prawns, hard as bullets and tasteless, and the 'chicken' in the jalfrezi looked like it was from a catering pack of char siu chicken. This has to be the worst meat I've ever had in a curry: hard, tasteless cubes. Very disappointing, avoid at all costs.

I have been here twice now with my colleague, the food is outstanding and I’m from Wales and have so much choice of restaurants. This is the place to come if in the area 👌🏼 the mix grill is bang on 👍🏼

The hotel is very good and the staff is very polite and helpful they will help you to chose the food as per your like. Must visit once if you want to taste delicious Indian food.

Fairly deserted restaurant, did not know the ridiculous prices and minimum spend (14.95£ pp) the restaurant required until sat down. Have expressed our regrets to the staff and was greeted with a smirk; “there’s a Chinese takeaway nearby that may suit your price.” Fyi I am of East Asian heritage, and such racial stereotypes and microaggression is unacceptable.

The atmosphere was fine, but we were mainly the only ones in there until we were about to leave and then another table of guests arrived. The food was fantastic, the restaurant was very clean, nice comfortable decor which made the whole experience extremely pleasant. Average prices, which is generally a good thing, and you bring your own alcohol (not soft drinks) as they don't have a licence to sell alcohol. I thought this was great as prefer the cost save and my own preferred choice of beer anyway. Highly recommended.

Had a takeaway from the Viceroy last night. Usually the Viceroy is excellent quality and reasonably priced. Unfortunately they have reduced the portion sizes and the mixed starter was just a rip off. I think it will be a very long time before I use the Viceroy again. Which is a shame.

Just dropped in on the way back via the ferry to France. I have been eating curries for over 40 years. This place was easily in my top 5 - excellent food. Newhaven is a dump, but this place is a gem

One of the best curries we have ever eaten. The service was impeccable and the staff were extremely friendly. We live in France, but will definitely come again before our next ferry crossing. Can't recommend enough and even asked the chef to come out to thank him 🙏

The meal was OK. Nothing special, this restaurant used to be much better in my opinion.

This is a real gem of a restaurant. Newhaven are very lucky people. Food was excellent, I think there were 7 r 8 different chutneys that came with the poppadoms. All fantastic so that was a great start. The restaurant was very busy which on a Sunday night they must have a great local reputation. Starters, mains again all fantastic and some different authentic dishes to try which I love. Very hard working lady at the front.of house. I assume she is the onwer? Finished with ice cream which my son loved. Also take your own wine which helps keep the price to a reasonable budget. 11 out of 10 if I could. Fantastic

My partner and I , have recently moved to Peacehaven and were looking for a great Indian restaurant, by chance we noticed the Viceroy in Newhaven. The choice of food was excellent, with a full vegan and vegetarian menu. Everything that was served was so fresh and tasty. They even prepared a Kashmiri curry for my partner that was not on the menu . The vegetable Jalfrezi tasted incredible. The onion bhajis must have been hand made minutes earlier so fresh and tasty. The staff were so polite and friendly. I suppose the only downside was that as they don't serve alcohol, I couldn't have a beer, however next time I will take my own . So, amazing food and friendly knowledgeable staff. Will definitely be returning. Or have a takeaway. One further positive, is the lack of MSG side effects, they obviously don't use this stuff or very little. Well done 👍

A couple of weeks ago stayed with friends who took me to The Viceroy. Lovely restaurant, brilliant food and take your own wine. I had Tandoori Prawns which is my go-to dish at Indian restaurants. They were really good. Service was impeccable, good atmosphere and sensible prices. Highly recommended.

Great selection of meals and sides. My chosen dish was well presented and very tasty. The Viceroy isn't licensed for drinks but allows you to bring your own. There is however an off licence approx 100 metres walk away.

Absolutely delicious! very fresh, full of traditional flavours. We shall be returning.

We didn't enjoy the food this time The stuffed paratha wasn't stuffed It was greasy aswel. The korma didn't have any veg in apart from potato It just wasn't up to the usual standard

The staff are very friendly, there is a really good variety of food available. My curry was PERFECT! COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER.

We were travelling on the overnight ferry from Newhaven so needed somewhere for dinner before hand so decided on the Viceroy. Really friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere, food of good quality and excellent value. The restaurant isn't licensed so you're encouraged to bring your own, we actually prefer this as it means we can be sure we can bring a bottle of what we want rather than hoping it's on the menu! Definitely would recommend and would return.

Went here with family whilst staying in Newhaven recently and had a great meal. I had the special with fish, coconut and pineapple, It was lovely. My husband had a lamb curry which was also lovely. . Went there just by chance - it was a great find. Would definitely go there again.

Decided to use a last minute offer on an Uber delivery, never used it before but the app was easy to use and the menu choice here was great. We waited a tiny bit longer than anticipated but definitely worth the wait. The food was hot and delicious and really fresh. Not greasy like we've had from other places. We tried a couple of new dishes and was not disappointed. Lovely restaurant food and would totally order again. Thanks

My absolute favourite treat. Have been using this takeaway for years. Have been recommended to try other local restaurants by friends. But always come back to viceroy. When we have friends over to ours and order inn, they are always asking where we got it from, and love it too. Definitely recommend

The pilau rice was of the same fantastic quality as Miahs spice, colourful and flavorful. Unlike some other takeaways which do boring yellow pilau rice. The chicken tikka masala was a thick sauce, but still reasonably runny consistency, which I like. It wasn't as sweet and rich as Miahs spice, which I would have preferred. I would say that for the chicken tikka masala and pilau rice, this will be my second favourite in the area. Unfortunately I have been disappointed with saltdean spice recently, so Viceroy and Miahs spice are the best two in Peacehaven, Newhaven and Telscombe area. Moloncho probably slipping in third. The food was with me in peacehaven within 30 mins of ordering which was concerning, but tasted fine, although for £5 delivery you'd expect it to be fast.

The food was just perfect light aromatic and perfectly spiced. The chef’s special was delicious and the menu has everything you would wish for in an Indian restaurant. Very clean and the staff very attentive… we shall return when passing through. This is a very good standard of Indian food.

Food was delicious other than an inedible piece of coconut husk that got left in one of the poppadum dips and I had the unfortunate displeasure of chomping on. Soft drinks came in 500ml bottles alongside the glass, which destroys the illusion when it comes to justifying their price (although I was given a free refill which was nice). The restaurant itself didn't feel completely welcoming (no music or atmospheric lighting), but this probably can't be helped due to the building's design.

My partner and I happened to be out of town and I fancied this place for dinner and wow! How tasty everything was! One thing I liked in particular was that even though we have several dishes every item tasted unique and different from the others. Like we had a Balti which was really nice and saucy with a kick of some sort. The Dansak nice and sweet at the same time slightly hot and tangy. Bombay potato was cooked to perfection and the Tarka Dall was so smooth. Mushroom bhajee also decent. Compliments to the chef. We also checked out there toilets and can say they were squeeky clean. We received great service from the start to finish. Plenty of parking outside and at the back of the restaurant. Top notch! Will be back next time we are out and about. Thanks guys. x

My order cost £30.50 the onion bhaji where small burnt bits of onion my nan bread was missing and I've never seen a lamb birtiani like it basically £30 for 2 tubs of rice

What an absolute disgrace I paid £30 for 2 tubs of rice small burnt onion bhaji will NEVER order food from there again and will discourage any of my friends or associates to order from there when is a lamb biriani a tub of rice?

Food was nice but when calling to place the order, the person who answered was so rude, couldn’t believe it… don’t think I’ll bother ordering from them again, why should I give my hard earned money to someone so rude?!… your loss

Horrible cold greasy watery and tasteless, all in all a nasty experience that’s never to be repeated!

We used the Viceroy for many years and it was very good. We moved away for a number of years and have now gone back. We have had two take always the first was reasonably ok my wife’s chicken tikka was good but my chicken Patia was less than average. We gave it a second chance and I changed my curry choice. It was truly awful. The curry was swimming in oil. The paratha was greasy and flat more like a chapati. But worst of all nothing had any spice or flavour bland, bland, bland. We will not return.

Had a lovely family meal here and the food was great. However the resturant isn't licensed so bare this in mind if you plan to visit as you will need to bring your own alcohol. We were the only customers in at the time as they had been closed for a while and to be honest felt a little rushed as staff standoing around us alot. Curtains or blinds should be considered for the windows as when the sun was coming in it got quite hot. Didn't think the menu had a great choice compared to other Indian rstuarants i have been to. All in all was not bad but just short of 5 stars.

Just used for the first time, was very disappointed portion sizes are rubbish no flavour and the tikka platter was 4 bits of very greasy fried meat!! Won't be using again

Arrived at 6pm,table for 7,was greeted by very friendly lady.We were given popadoms with various dips.The main meal arrived with not a very long delay as we were all served together at the same time,food piping hot!.The desserts I can recommend,they were delicious.Can recommend this restaurant,shall certainly go there again.p.s. Just had the misfortune to order a takeaway from here which I collected at 6pm. Today Tandoori Chicken starter, £3.80, Onion Bhahji, £3.80 and a cauliflower Bhahji £3.85. the tandoori chicken last saw a tandoori oven last week when it was originally cooked. Obviously re heated in the microwave as it was rock hard and stringy and so old the yellow tumeric had soaked deep into the flesh. Cauliflower Bhahji obviously frozen and cooked in microwave with a bit of bland sauce poured over the top. Probably needs another two minutes in the microwave as it had only just defrosted. Onion Bhahji may have been been deep fried but not for long and then put tin container with a lid on so it was just mush by the time I got it home. I eat two onion Bhahji then the rest went in the bin. Never again.

First time using these and doubt I’ll use them again, not great value for money, Small portions, I was still hungry lol, abit bland and watery (pathia), newhaven curry house is better and that’s saying something 😂

They are very attentive with our order and called us to ensure it was what we wanted as the Just Eat app didn't give us all the options.

I've only ever had takeaway from here, but it's nearly always lovely, and it arrives quickly. I've taken off a star because a few times they've forgotten something, and their response is to just give you double next time which isn't ideal! But I will still order from here.

Disappointed. First time using them, Tarka Dall was like soup. Chicken Madras they forgot to add chilli, no heat at all. Sag aloo and Sag paneer paranthas were good. Hence the two stars. Wont be back.

A new Viceroy menu leaflet arrived through my door recently advertising their new ‘Premium’ menu and having not used The Viceroy for many years due to repeated poor food and service in the past, we decided to 'give them another go'. Bad move.Their leaflet says 'Order online and get 10% discount', which we did. No discount was applied so called to ask why. "That's because you need a discount code" I was advised. So I asked where I get said code from and why it is not printed on the leaflet? The response was "I'm sorry, but I didn't design the leaflets and it's not my responsibility." After protestation, four cans of Coke were eventually added to my order by way of compensation for the missing discount.During that call, it also emerged that they had accidentally processed and charged for the order twice. £46.90 x2. I was told it would take up to 7 days to refund the extra £46.90!When placing the online order, we requested a collection as opposed to a delivery. The website asks you to input the postcode of their restaurant if you would like to collect. We did this and were given a collection time of 19:06pm, a one hour wait.We went to collect our food at 7pm, only to be told that our order was "Already out for delivery." I asked how that could be possible give that we had requested collection? After investigation, it seemed that our address was lurking in their computer system somewhere from goodness knows when and that had been used for the order. I was told that their online ordering system was ‘Very broken’. So back home to wait for the delivery, which finally arrived some 40 mins late.Food that arrived was stone cold and the ‘Premium Signature’ fish dishes hardly qualified as a fish dish because the amount of fish in them was barely visible to the naked eye. Same for my Royal Chicken Balti. A plateful of cold sauce with no more than four small bits of chicken!!So in summary, we will not be using this restaurant ever again. The service was very bad. The attitude of the staff was indifferent. The online ordering system is appalling and the food is way over-priced and distinctly below average. It didn’t help either that the owner just stood in the background grinning, whilst I registered my disappointment to the young lad who was clearly being left to take the flack.

I have been in Seaford over 5yrs, just had a delivery from the Viceroy, this was the best curry I have had since coming to this area , The food was glorious everything was fresh and flavoursome Thank you John and Lisa

I have been looking for a decent Indian takeaway that can cater for my dairy intolerance for years and then a neighbour recommended the Viceroy. I ordered a takeaway on Saturday night and I have to say my search is over. The menu is great with a mixture of classic dishes and a large number of specials. The online ordering process is very straightforward and you get a 10% discount. I had to phone to check on allergy information and my query was dealt with in a friendly way and was never given the impression that it was an inconvenience for them. Food was ready for collection within half an hour and was fantastic. Nice and hot, well cooked and not a spot of grease in the cartons when we served them. Will be using the Viceroy all the time moving forward. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

What can I say a month after the first takeaway and a good review we gave a completely different experience came about , our in-laws are staying in our COVID bubble so we ordered on Saturday the 21st November 4 curries, a chicken madras, a chicken dhansak, a biryani and a chicken tikka masalas . The food arrived on time but minus the chicken madras which we phoned up to see where it was , the rude and abrupt guy on the end of the phone said DO YOU WANT 10% OFF YOUR NEXT ORDER ! , which we replied no thank you we would like the food we ordered which came 20mins later after everyone else had almost finished there meals . Well I say almost finished , l mean mostly left as it was Lukewarm and almost every dish tasted the same . To add the popadoms were not that fresh and my wife’s tub of rice was half full ( or half empty take your pick lol ). The whole experience was as if they lured you in the first time with a nice meal and then after that they couldn’t give a sh*t . After last night’s experience I tore the takeaway menu up in disgust. Funny thing is we only used viceroy as we couldn’t get through to malonchos Indian in Peacehaven which shows how good it is . Think I will keep ringing malonchos from now on no matter how long it takes to get through. I thinkIn these uncertain times they should be trying to attract business not lose it .

I have been using this restaurant for years but recently the food has not been to a high standard for the price . The curry I have been eating for a very long time has been tasteless and watery . Also the photos show how a takeaway arrived to me . Then the restaurant accused me of doing it deliberately to get a free meal however , I had already played for it. They actually expected us to eat it out of the bag . The manager did send us another meal in the end and said it was a gesture of good will . Then told us not to bother ordering from them in the future .

Had a takeaway from here on Saturday 10th October 2020 , the food was very tasty I had the chicken madras and my wife had the chicken tikka masala, the poppadoms were nice and crisp which is always a good sign there fresh. The only thing I would say is I order through there own website which states 10% off if you order using it ,this never came off the total price , and also we placed the order it said select a delivery which we put at 18.15 our door bell went at 17.20 it was the food nearly an hour early . This was strange as it says it doesn’t open till 17.30 , we didn’t mind as we were hungry but it would have proved to be a problem if we were having guests round and they weren’t arriving till 18.15. That aside will definitely use again as it’s not a reflection on the tasty food .

First visit last thursday...my b'day treat & it was excellent. Good service, tasty food & well presented. Covid rules followed & everywhere spotless clean. No license so you take own drinks bt Roys off license closeby so no problem. Will return ..highly recommended

Good food but incredibly expensive breads (but coming from 'up North' this always seems the same South of Sheffield!). Hot curries not very hot if the Naga was anything to go by, but still tasty and a good portion.

Just had a takeaway from here and it was very disappointing. The portion size has got smaller and smaller over the years and what we just had can only be described as child size portions. To make things worse my daughter's korma had a long head hair in it so she couldn't eat it. Last time we will be using this establishment.

Our first time ordering from The Viceroy didn’t disappoint. Ordered three curries, three rice and two naan. One of the best takeaways we’ve had and good value for money. In lockdown so didn’t expect delivery at time asked for but it arrived bang on time! Excellent all round and looking forward to our next one.

Cold food delivered for £35 and unapologetic response.I work for the NHS and had a long week, so I ordered food at 6.40pm I ordered a set meal for two and a few sundries. When I ordered it said food would be here for 7.30 at 8pm I called them the woman said the driver had left 15 minute ago the driver the phoned miles away not even knowing where we are. He arrived 30 mins later with freezing cold food.We called the restaurant and they couldn’t care less. Offered a discount of next order! If I want cold food I’ll order a frozen microwave meal.He agreed a refund but on return of the food, so we obliged by tipping the food back into the dishes and sending it back the driver was much quicker collecting it than he was delivering totally bizarre to ask for food that was delivered cold back!I do wonder if they are now serving it to someone else after it being on my plate

First time we ordered from here was impressed. Since then we have ordered from here a few times, been a bit hit and miss re taste and temperature. This time turned up without the rice so we wont be buying from here again.

We have been here on several occasions now.The food is outstanding and the staff are very helpful.Its one of the best places for an indian meal i have been to.Bring your own alcohol is also a plus as you can gaurantee a drink that you like.

Delivery took about 25 mins over the time they said (45/1 hour) when the curry got here wasnt very hot and tbh not very tasty either and I had to spend over a certain amount for the privilege was expecting more for the money and time
