1st time visit for coffee and cake, we were quickly shown to a table, really comfy and relaxing, coffee was excellent and with a large selection of cake there's something for everyone and dog friendly.

Time for a quick cup of tea and slice of cake and did not disappoint. Staff are lovely and make you feel welcome. All the food is homemade and delicious. Check the specials also, well worth my time and money. Lovely fruit cake. Saved a piece for later on. Thanks guys.

An out of this world culinary experience in a great setting

In the pouring rain we had a full English breakfast and vegan b. enjoyed. By the way, the beans taste fantastic. They are cooked with pureed tomatoes and oregano and have a delicate aroma.

a lovely place with attentive staff and tastey food me my wife both had a full english breakfast it was fantastic the sausages were suculent and perfectly cooked the bacon so flavorsome really was a treat as expected the eggs where cooked expertly with a slightly runny yolk all was fantastic at least it was until sadly it came to the beans these diddent match up the flavour was like nothing i had ever experianced in the baked been department but in a bad way a very bad way these little buggers repeated on me for hours and hours i learned afterwards that these are homemade ! for the love of god WHY? please please please could you go back to a good old branston or heinz my perfect 10/10 breakfast was reduced to an 9/10 simply due to these little abominations im still farting now !

Food range was wide. When the food came it was really tasty but there could have been a slightly bigger portion. Staff were very friendly. We were sat near the door and there was a queue to pay which was annoying, but can't be helped as it's a small establishment

Called in on a busy bank Holiday, they found us a table quickly and the menu is a great mix between traditional and modern food. Despite being really busy they were very friendly and service was not bad considering the number of customers. It is both people and dog friendly !

Are the best eggs I've ever tasted...., met him outside, told him his eggs were main reason for visit, so he came back in to make my breakfast even though it was his day off !! What a fella...as the late great Dave Myers would say 'one egg is never an oeuf' ..thank you Ian....till next time !

Don't know what happened yesterday but if it hadn't been for the fact that lovely friends treated me to lunch I would have complained. Ages to get served, drinks came long before food order was even taken, then we had to ask for service. I ordered cheese and leak quiche, it was not a quiche, no pastry, no taste. Two small leaves of lettuce, HALF A SMALL SLICE OF BEETROOT (why bother), couple of sun-dried tomatoes, watery tasteless slaw, yuk. I have eaten a fab Mac & cheese here before, was therefore so disappointed with my lunch yesterday. Quality and presentation was poor. You can do better.

Great atmosphere and the service is brilliant

I'd go as far as saying, the best sarny/toasty I've ever had. Cakes are also 5*. Nice quirky decor, and staff are very catering.

Fantastic friendly staff Beautiful food I can highly recommend this place

Visited this place for the first time with my wife who is celiac. They were very accommodating with this and we were able to get a raspberry and coconut slice of cake each which was outstanding (there were lots of other options of both sweet. And savoury food). I am not celiac but had the same and it is as good as any cake I’ve ever had. We will be regular visitors from now on but I strongly advise booking a table. The secret is out and there were having to turn customers away as it’s so popular.

The service was impeccable; the staff went above and beyond to ensure our dining experience was nothing short of extraordinary! The food was divine and truely perfect - We would highly recommend!

We came across this amazing cafe enroute to an overnight stay in Saltburn by the sea. We were shown to a table in the upstairs part of the cafe immediately on entering the premises. We were served within a few minutes of being seated, we both chose toasted sandwiches served with coleslaw and crisps. Have to say the food was absolutely delicious, the ingredients were of the freshest, the best coleslaw ever. Amazing cakes with no aftertaste of baking soda/powder that you often experience. The cappuccino coffee was the best we've ever experienced, so good we had to have a second cup. All of the staff were very professional, friendly and coureous. Highly recommend and look forward to a future visit.

Stopped by for a Sunday lunch on a recommendation, quirky little place and quite possibly the best Sunday lunch I've ever had. The beef fell to pieces, was tender and perfectly cooked, veg cooked to perfection, crispy but fluffy toasties. The list goes on. Lovely little find and will be back.

This place is an amazing jewel in the heart of great Ayton. We went for lunch for my son’s birthday today. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. The food was amazing and selection of cakes etc was second to none. Well done to all the staff we will definitely be returning soon xx

It is a great cafe for tea/coffee and cake, with plenty of savoury food options and freshly made bread available as well. The staff were very friendly, and a good playlist was on when we visited. We didn't reserve a table, but you can do if you know the time you want a table. There are some more tables in the back room, so worth going in even if they appear full from the street. We went for the toasted teacake (nicely cinnamon spiced) and Bakewell slice. Both were healthly portions, and nice coffee.

Unfortunate inability to serve warm cappuccinos even when the first ones sent back. Scones hard and dry. Jam but no cream which was ordered. Thought it was going to be as nice as it looked but obviously we will never call again.

Great Ayton is a delightful location at any time of year and has a few great sports to eat and drink. Our experiences here have always been breakfast but I can say this is easily the best breakfast in the area. Watching the chef carefully prepare a range of foods with real dedication you can’t help but be impressed. Breakfast for me is full of English and I would recommend anytime, absolutely superb. I have been told the Sunday lunches are also excellent so we will try them soon. This is a lovely venue with great attentive staff and terrific food, well done all.

Not welcome! Took a day off from work and my wife was excited excited about the opportunity to take me there. When we walked in we were told there was only seating outside, where it was too cold in November, there is apparently an extended seating area upstairs that was 'closed' and there was no effort made to sit us on large tables, sharing with one or two other people. It was explained to us that most had just sat down so would be a while. Overall, they just didn't want our business and we're going to be as awkward as they could about it. Left feeling very negative.

Popped in for the full English breakfast and it was very tasty.

Lovely staff,great service,brilliant food

First visit here after passing by for many years as it always looks so busy, however we didn’t realise it opened up at the back and we were lucky enough to be seated on the lovely cosy sofas upstairs. The staff were really friendly and attentive. Three of us had the cheese scones which they warmed for us and I’m not exaggerating when I say they were the best cheese scones any of us had had. One of us got the scrambled eggs on toast with halloumi and avocado and although this wasn’t an exact option on the menu they said it was no problem. This was so well seasoned and a generous portion. Again, one of the nicest versions of this we’ve tried. The coffees were particularly delicious too. We can’t wait to go back.

Popped in for a bite to eat with a friend. Quirky gorgeous little place. It felt like being in in some a aristocrats morning room, fab decor, comfy, shabby chic. Love it. We both had a little breakfast. Everything on that plate was super tasty. Bacon was really well cooked and homemade beans a revelation. Would love that recipe, sausages were best have had in a while. Came with great wodges of sourdough toast and big pats of butter. It was a little plate, but just what we needed and really filling actually. We asked for various drinks and some water. It's the little things, beautiful crockery and even the water served a a fish shaped bottle that was so unusual. Service was great. All the girls were polite, speedy and accommodating. Definitely be back!

Friendly staff. Food is always wholesome and some of it is innovative and well above average. This cafe is also something of an inigma in that some of their food is presented with little fineness. On the one hand, they serve up white chocolate mochas to die for, yet they will serve bacon buns in bread door steps. That might be appropriate for artisans who burn up 12,000 calories in a day, but a strain on the average constitution. They sell cakes and bread from the front shop. Some look the part but again need more refinement. I have bought home-made bread from them previously, but it needed to be a lot lighter. I really do wish this little cafe all the best for their efforts, but hope they can make a few tweaks to elevate their culinary standards to match their wholesome home made qualities.

I organised an afternoon tea for a birthday gift and it was amazing - the best afternoon tea I have every had. Instead of boring finger sandwiches, we had a toasted sandwich, pastry and a quiche, followed by savoury and sweet scones with homemade jam, followed by homemade cakes. I think we had a little more of the sandwiches/pastries than usual due to one of us being vegetarian but even sharing them would have been plenty. It was incredible - well worth the money. The staff were polite and friendly and even dealt with some rude and entitled customers that expected people who were already seated to move for them very well! This is a great little spot and is dog friendly - which is even better for us. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be returning.

I have visiting for quite a few years and have recommended it to many friends over the years. I also live around the corner so it’s on my doorstep. The level of customer service seems to be very hit and miss depending who is working. There is one particular member of staff that probably needs to work in non customer service environment. I have actually never even see her smile let alone the very rude and abrupt way you are seated and served. After chatting to a friend she actually shared a very similar story and said never again. So unfortunately I feel I will be only buying cakes (which are excellent) to take away from now and using the many other cafes in the village if I want to enjoy food or coffee seated.

We visited here, on a Sunday morning, staff very attentive and helpful, food was superb, breakfast and sandwiches were delicious, and of course we had to take out a selection of cakes that were on display. all in all a fantastic experience and we cannot wait to return

Wow we use a lot of cafes me and my partner and this is amazing try the gypsie breakfast wow and the homemade beans amazing. Price is great staff are so good and so polite asking hoqs the food. Finiahing with fresh carott cake homemade please try this place

So glad to visit this place once again. As usual service was excellent and always with a smile. Even though they have a great selection on the regular menu, we thought we'd ask if there were any specials and yes there was. Both the items we ordered off the special menu and they were wonderful. I can honestly say the quiche I had was among the best I had ever had, if not the top. For dessert I had Caramel oat cake, which paired well with my hot chocolate This is a place we have to go to whenever in Great Ayton, should not be missed whatever the weather.

Good food, Great cakes. 4 stars because I watched a member of staff check the cakes while eating. Checking cakes with the same hand she was putting the food in her mouth with not the best to see. Eat wash your hands then check cakes . Overall great visit apart from the cake contamination

She seemed annoyed as I hadn't mentioned that we had a table booked - ended up speaking over me asking did you book, well did you book, well what name, what name! very very rude and loud, I was embarrassed by this time and almost walked out! My husband and son agreed she was totally out of order with her attitude. Good points now - breakfast was lovely, reasonably priced, and the rest of the staff were lovely. Will not visit again which is a shame as it's a lovely little place.

The staff were helpful and friendly and really good with the children on the adjacent table. I had the vegan breakfast (because I find a 'full English' really boring and now avoid them) and it was great. Loved it, will go back.

Quirky decor in a cosy cottage layout. Upstairs seating too. Very comfortable ambience. Went for brunch at 11am. Got busier by lunchtime. Attentive service, lovely menu and our food and coffees were excellent. (E.g. wild mushroom and garlic cream on toast with perfectly poached egg.) May 2023 service was slower today but still love the place. Best not to be in a rush, anyway.

Here for a wedding and just sat here now: what a fab cafe. Had the best welcome when I arrived - all the staff are super friendly and can’t do enough for you. Breakfast was great. Wish I lived closer, would be here all the time but despite being lovely, a 9 hr trip would be a bit too much. Highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed

Dangerous lack of concern about nut food allergies, had to be asked to check with the kitchen after saying "pretty sure it doesn't have nuts" and not offering to check. Unfriendly customer service had me leave after 15minutes. I would rather have ok food and good customer service. They are relying on their good food for return custom.

Whilst the coffee and cake was extremely delicious, this establishment is NOT child friendly and the staff are VERY rude. Especially the young girl with blonde hair. Also I would not recommend eating here if you have an allergy. I have a nut allergy and asked if 1 of the cakes had nuts in and the staff members response was ‘erm I don’t think so’. There was no offer to check with the kitchen or the usual response of ‘we can’t guarantee there won’t be traces etc’. I then asked her to check for me and she rolled hers eyes! I will not be coming back or recommending.

We called in around two’ish as walk-in guests to The Velveteen Rabbit as most of the pubs in Great Ayton were busy as it was Easter Friday and what a delightful find it was. We were given the “Red chairs” table in the window adjacent to the display counter showing off some very tasty looking cakes. There are further tables upstairs on the first floor where the toilets are located. The staff were friendly and humorous. We chose a full English breakfast, scrambled egg on toast with sausage and a toasted ham & Brie sandwich with salad and crisps. All the meals were excellent, especially the homemade baked beans with the breakfast. To accompany the meal we had a glass of Merlot, a Pinot Grigio & Soda and two large latte coffees. The bill came to £45 which was very good value for money and so £5 tip went into their jar. The restaurant had a steady string of visitors and is dog, baby and cyclist friendly. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. They have music evenings too - the next one features George Boomsma on April 7th 2023.

I pass here a lot and always admire the yellow front door. Ordered coffee and cake to take away, the coffee is good but I’ve tasted much nicer cake from a cheap market. I also found the staff quite miserable and generally bored out of their tree. Definitely not a service with a smile. This has rather put me off going again. I always support small businesses but this one, I will definitely think twice about it. I wouldnt be happy if it was my business.

Had a lovely lunch here. The staff were attentive and very friendly. The fresh scones with clotted crean were delicious and the large coffees were definitely large and nice and hot. Would definitely recommend a visit here if you are visiting Great Ayton.

I wish trip advisor had a 10 star rating. This was an absolutely heart warming, special, delicious and we in our party of 7 for my Mams birthday were completely and utterly overwhelmed by you guys. Kirstine was in constant touch with me prior to the booking and could not have done any more to make this day so special! Amongst our party (I’m gonna run out of words here aren’t I?! 🤣) there was myself, my mam Janet (the birthday girl), my mother in law, my auntie and uncle as well as my nana and grandad (grandad who has just turned 90 on 17 September)- he is actually fitter than all of us combined but my nana is now very frail. Our waitress EVEN walked my nana hand in hand down the few steps to ensure she was safe upon leaving. The food was outstanding. The music was unbelievable- BTW: I named every track since the minute I walked in and I’m now on your site getting the track list. BUT- the service was absolutely out of this world! The lady that served us (I want to say Amy but not sure but I’m sure you can check)- it was Sunday 9 October was absolutely worthy of a flipping knighthood! She was so careful around nana, kept her at ease when nana was struggling to eat all on her plate, was in continuous talk with me about the pre-arranged cake that I ordered (and we were all gobsmacked at that too) all personalised with my mams, mine and our two dogs names on to boot! Not to be maudlin but, recently as a family, we have had some very very tough times and this experience was the absolute tonic we all needed. I don’t even know how much more I can say about this place- food AMAZING but the staff and customer service (especially our waitress) was second to none. Please can Kirstine and our waitress get an actual mention from us all. Let them personally know that you guys made our day. What a divine place, what divine staff, what divine pre & after care, amazing music and just flipping amazing! Thank you, wholeheartedly from all of us for making the day so special!
