An amazing cafe! Very friendly staff and great coffee. Can't thank the wonderful John at the bike hire enough, spent a perfect day in the local hills on some of John's very well maintained emtbs. Smashing fun! Will be back very soon.

Just been here today and we were blown away with how great it was! Had some lovely home baked cakes and our gluten free requirement was well catered for. What made it really special was we were able to hire bikes. John was so helpful with this and went above and beyond in making sure we were well set up and took lots of time telling us about local routes. A great day out!

I hired 2 mountain bikes from John for a long ride around the North of England - around 550 km. The bikes were in very good condition and had everything we needed. John also supplied us with a few extras which we thanked him for. He was also very helpful in delivering the bikes to the station where we started and collecting them after 6 days. Next time I am in the area I will definitely visit John to hire bikes. John, thanks again for everything.

My Son and I came here to hire some E mountain bikes. What a lovely setting on arrival, the cafe looked great and was busy and had a good vibe to it. We were greeted by John the owner who sat us down and showed us all the different routes he recommended for our day out. He showed us the bikes and all the features etc. Very friendly and helpful guy! We had a great day out up on the hills. We could tell the bikes had been well maintained and looked after as they performed very well on some tough terrain in places. Overall a great experience, very reasonably priced and a great area to explore. Thank you John, we will be back!

Lovely little place, quite quirky with an original bicycle theme ambience. Had tea, coffee and a cheese scone, the latter being particularly good. Only slight negative was being served the drinks in beakers rather than cups. Nevertheless I would definitely call in again.

Stopped here on the way back from a walk. Nice small café with seats inside and outside. Friendly staff and a nice selection of treats. I had a coffee frappe and my wife had a strawberry milkshake. Both were very nice and we enjoyed sitting on the deck chairs in the sun drinking them. We got some fruit scones to take away for later which were also really good. Nice taste and they didn't crumble when preparing them with cream and jam. Will definitely stop here again when we are nearby.

Hmm…for an eco friendly place, I’d have expected a brew in a china mug or cup and a proper bacon sarnie on a bap/barm on a china plate not served in a tiny panini on cardboard tray and paper cup. The missus had a toasted teacake which was good. Atmos and decor ace, log burner lit to “take the chill off” on a damp day.

What a little gem this place is! I pass this cafe every day to work but had never been to visit. On a morning out with family, we decided to call in. Love the quirky bike hanging from a bracket along the roadside which immediately strikes interest as to what is behind the gate and this little place is tucked away in what was a former garage in Swainby. Parking around the back and a lovely little outdoor eating area with old cable reels as tables and the inside of the cafe is adorned with bike (both pedal and motor) related memorabilia, comfy seating area with a wood burning stove and some lovely local artwork. Hot chocolate was not too sweet and generous portion of cream decorated with mini marshmallows. My only tiny issue here was it could have done with being hotter but it was still delicious! Accompanied by a superb slice of almond slice and cheese scones are up there with some of the best in the area. A review on here complained about disposable cups.... really?? Well, I applaud this and well done to The Rusty Bike for being eco conscious and to keep costs down. Many hospitality places have had to adapt to ever changing habits, economy and trying to recruit staff is a problem for many, especially in out of the way places and country areas. Besides a café of this style can get away with it and cannot see what the issue is. Unpretentious, friendly, relaxing and quirky, yes please! we will be back and recommend to others.

I called up John and was able to get a road bike at short notice for a Saturday. The roadbike was well maintained, everything I needed and had a Shimano 105 group set. The group set was good enough for the climbs in the N Yorks moors, incl Rosedale Chimney, and on the coast. Loved the bike. John also fixed me up with some extras in the tool kit, so thanks for that. He was also very accommodating allowing me to pick upthe bike the evening before, and drop it off the morning after my ride. John is a big bike enthusiast which is reflected in the place. There are classic bikes hanging on the walls of the cafe with history. I loved reading about the stories behind them. Unfortunately the cafe was closed to customers when I picked up the bike so couldn’t try out any of the food/drinks, but the place looks great. It has an outdoor seated area too. Next time I’m in town I’ll be back here to hire a bike

This is a great little cafe, especially for cyclists, tucked in close to the North Yorks Moors. The cafe was warm and inviting, with friendly and helpful staff. I think they could possibly reduce the covid measures they have in place now, in line with other establishments. The beans on toast came with really nice chunky bread, plenty of butter, and a decent amount of beans. However, serving them on a paper plate and a paper bowl for the beans. The hot chocolate and tea were both decent but the hot drinks were expensive: I really fail to see how any cafe can justify £3.50 for an americano in a paper cup, or a tea for £2.75 in a paper cup, for that matter. In fact, some of the prices were a jit strange. Not only were the hot drinks overpriced and strangely related, but also the soup of the day was over £6 (presumably, in another paper bowl, or a paper cup), which seems excessive. I fail to understand the reason for the overuse of paper plates, cups, and bowls. If it was an overhang of the covid measures (which the cafe seem keen to continue), then surely they would provide wooden cutlery too instead of the metal versions they provide. Also, if it's to reduce washing up, then why provide metal cutlery? Instead, they are contributing to single-use consumption by using throw-away waxed paper containers.

It's a nice place to pop in for a coffee & cake or tray bake, comfy chairs & good music. It is a very popular spot for the cycling community, on street parking was fine as it was relatively quiet but I imagine it's a different story on a sunny weekend. I'll give that a try when the weather picks up. There is a nice relaxed feeling here (mid week and raining) - as if you could easily stay for a good couple of hours and not be rushed out. I bet it will be buzzing on warmer days.

Absolutely amazing customer service, bikes, tea and cake! I couldn't find the bike hire to review so I'll do it all on here. My partner had booked a bike hire for my birthday unknown to John (owner). We agreed to hire E mountain bikes on a Thursday but non of us clicked on this was closed on a Thursday. But once we arrived John was there in an instant and was very accommodating and very informative about the bikes and we loved the reccomended routes, we had an absolute blast! Although the cafe was closed John provided us with lovely yorkshire tea and cake which was homemade and delicious! Great place in Swainby, a little away from the river looking out at the foothills of the North York Moors so beautiful and different in every season. Went with a friend at lunch time and found the café really busy so lots of atmosphere, passing cyclists, dog walkers, hikers (it's on a bus toute), and just friends meeting for coffee. There is outside seating as well and a cosy log burner too. Great tasting tomato soup and lovely bread - much recommended. Visited one year later and sorry to say the food was dry and unappetising and drinks were in paper cups even the table flowers dead, rather depressing atmosphere and no cosy fire burning.

We hired an e mtb bike from John so that a friend could try one out. From the start John could not have been more helpful both with the bike and the route we had planned. Unfortunately we had an incident with the bike, damaging one pedal beyond our ability to fix it on the trail, so we phoned John. Within half an hour he turned up with a new pedal and with some skill and experience he managed to repair the pedal and crank, which was also damaged so we could continue our much looked forward to ride. So thank you John and yes I would recommend the Rusty Bike Cafe though due to timing we missed out on the food but many other bikers were tucking into what looked like tasty food.

This used to be a favourite café stop on our bike rides but since the pandemic they have replaced crockery and cutlery with disposable paper boxes instead of plates, wooden cutlery and takeaway cups. We visited today hoping to find that things had been restored to normal like almost all other cafés have but alas no. Still disposable serving materials. The sad thing is that this is a lovely bustling atmospheric café that serves great food and delicious coffee but it let’s itself down badly by persisting on paper plates etc. in the name of sustainability despite still charging top prices. I don’t want to drink from a paper cup and pay £3.50 for it. So we won’t be back until they get the crockery out

The cheese scone I had today was the best I’ve ever had and the cakes all looked amazing too. My other half had a fat rascal which he loved too. Coffees were good…we didn’t haven any problem with the cardboard cups/plates some people will whinge about anything though! The toilets were lovely…more like hotel bathroom then toilets at a cafe. Second visit inside a week, first after run with friends and today to show partner the castle discovered on said run. Both times the drinks were great and tea cake and scones excellent BUT I do not wish to sit inside a cafe and drink from a paper cup and eat from a paper tray. Sitting outside I could maybe understand it. Note signs saying please place rubbish in recycling but on return to counter was instructed to place all in black bin bag. I even pointed out it included butter wrapper and dirty napkin therefore rendering un-recyclable. Saying “it’s recyclable” is not the same as stuff actually being recycled. We'd asked and paid for cheese that we pointed out wasn't there. As he took our food away for a meagre sprinkling of cheese, I asked if we could have them served properly on a plate. The young lad said "we can't do plates because of Covid"!!!! I asked how we were meant to eat it and he told us to "dip our bread in the beans"! 🤣🤣 This is 6th of August 2022!!! Ridiculous!!! Drove over for breakfast, but not really many hot options for vegetarians, just beans on toast really. Couple of items on the lunch time seem better options. Didn't mind the paper and cardboard cartons etc, but my hot chocolate was a bit too lively to work that well in the cardboard cup. Homemade cakes are good, can recommend the coffee and walnut cake, decent sized slab. (Biker sized, heh heh) Toasted teacake was OK. Pleasant enough, but a queue soon forms as it's popular here, and the service can be a bit slow. Has outdoor seating at the front, oh and it's dog friendly too. Quirky decor inside with reclaimed wood, hessian furnishings and a woodburner, cycles and whey hey a lhaverlee lil bikie, a 1936 Ariel no less. I smirked at the comment on a review that said this place is popular with "cyclists and motor bikers but don't let that put you off because they were well mannered." We bikers aren't all rufty tufty mafiosa sons of anarchy you know, strange how folk pigeonhole bikers, they're the loveliest, most genial folk I know, bikers. Books... covers...judging, but that's the 'human condition', I guess. Also sells some gorgeous cards by textile designer, Jane Kitching, whose exuberant works adorn the walls too. Yes, I would revisit, it has it's own charm for sure and I like a bit of quirk and homemade always gets a vote from me.

We were told by some one that it was a good place to eat To drop in to or incorporate it in a walk We really enjoyed it but slightly disappointed that we had paper plates knives and Forks plus paper cups this is the only thing that put us off.

Have visited this cafe four or five times and it always feels warm and cozy. Ideal for a light snack and a coffee. The soup and a savoury scone were delicious. Popular with walkers and cyclists and it's dog friendly which was a plus for us.

We called in at the end of a fab walk. The welcome was lovely and the decor was even nicer. Robyn clearly takes real pride. Unfortunately it was raining, so we found ourselves stranded and forced to stay for 4 very enjoyable pints. We're told that food will be available from the end of July. If you're passing then pop in and support this great pub.

Lovely cosy cafe. Arrived unannounced, with a large group of people with additional needs but were made very welcome and seated very quickly. The staff were very kind, patient and helpful. A good choice of lunchtime meals and snacks which everyone enjoyed. Would visit again when in the area.
