Nice staff but rushed so service is slow. Menu depends on what has already been bought to take away so maybe not much left later in the afternoon but food is good and well served and there are good facilities.

Myself and my friend are both cyclists and loved this café for it's picturesque location, great coffee and gluten free options for me! It was my first time here since moving to the Northeast from Lancashire and will be a regular going forward. It's also dog friendly and as I have 3 dogs I will be coming back with them and the wife very soon!!

This is a great little cafe, especially for cyclists, tucked in close to the North Yorks Moors. The cafe was warm and inviting, with friendly and helpful staff. I think they could possibly reduce the covid measures they have in place now, in line with other establishments. The beans on toast came with really nice chunky bread, plenty of butter, and a decent amount of beans. However, serving them on a paper plate and a paper bowl for the beans. The hot chocolate and tea were both decent but the hot drinks were expensive: I really fail to see how any cafe can justify £3.50 for an americano in a paper cup, or a tea for £2.75 in a paper cup, for that matter. In fact, some of the prices were a jit strange. Not only were the hot drinks overpriced and strangely related, but also the soup of the day was over £6 (presumably, in another paper bowl, or a paper cup), which seems excessive. I fail to understand the reason for the overuse of paper plates, cups, and bowls. If it was an overhang of the covid measures (which the cafe seem keen to continue), then surely they would provide wooden cutlery too instead of the metal versions they provide. Also, if it's to reduce washing up, then why provide metal cutlery? Instead, they are contributing to single-use consumption by using throw-away waxed paper containers.

It's a nice place to pop in for a coffee & cake or tray bake, comfy chairs & good music. It is a very popular spot for the cycling community, on street parking was fine as it was relatively quiet but I imagine it's a different story on a sunny weekend. I'll give that a try when the weather picks up. There is a nice relaxed feeling here (mid week and raining) - as if you could easily stay for a good couple of hours and not be rushed out. I bet it will be buzzing on warmer days.

Absolutely amazing customer service, bikes, tea and cake! I couldn't find the bike hire to review so I'll do it all on here. My partner had booked a bike hire for my birthday unknown to John (owner). We agreed to hire E mountain bikes on a Thursday but non of us clicked on this was closed on a Thursday. But once we arrived John was there in an instant and was very accommodating and very informative about the bikes and we loved the reccomended routes, we had an absolute blast! Although the cafe was closed John provided us with lovely yorkshire tea and cake which was homemade and delicious! I mentioned my birthday at the beginning because he went above and beyond not knowing it was my birthday, 10/10, we will definitely be returning in the summer!

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the delightful charm and culinary excellence of The Rusty Bike Cafe in Swainby, and it's safe to say that this hidden gem has earned a permanent spot in my heart. From the moment I stepped through the door, I was captivated by the warm and inviting ambience that perfectly complemented the rustic yet modern decor. The Rusty Bike Cafe stands out not only for its welcoming atmosphere but also for its exceptional food quality. The menu, a thoughtful blend of classic favourites and innovative creations, showcases the culinary expertise of the chefs who have a passion for crafting memorable dining experiences. Great place in Swainby, a little away from the river looking out at the foothills of the North York Moors so beautiful and different in every season. Went with a friend at lunch time and found the café really busy so lots of atmosphere, passing cyclists, dog walkers, hikers (it's on a bus toute), and just friends meeting for coffee. There is outside seating as well and a cosy log burner too. Great tasting tomato soup and lovely bread - much recommended. Visited one year later and sorry to say the food was dry and unappetising and drinks were in paper cups even the table flowers dead, rather depressing atmosphere and no cosy fire burning.

I’m not sure if it was the time of day, after 3pm, but was told by a friend that they were recently served their coffee there in a proper ceramic cup and saucer. Besides that the restaurant was clean and the ‘fat rascal’ very nice, though very different tasting to the more traditional ones at Betty’s or Thomas’!

We hired an e mtb bike from John so that a friend could try one out. From the start John could not have been more helpful both with the bike and the route we had planned. Unfortunately we had an incident with the bike, damaging one pedal beyond our ability to fix it on the trail, so we phoned John. Within half an hour he turned up with a new pedal and with some skill and experience he managed to repair the pedal and crank, which was also damaged so we could continue our much looked forward to ride. So thank you John and yes I would recommend the Rusty Bike Cafe though due to timing we missed out on the food but many other bikers were tucking into what looked like tasty food.

This used to be a favourite café stop on our bike rides but since the pandemic they have replaced crockery and cutlery with disposable paper boxes instead of plates, wooden cutlery and takeaway cups. We visited today hoping to find that things had been restored to normal like almost all other cafés have but alas no. Still disposable serving materials. The sad thing is that this is a lovely bustling atmospheric café that serves great food and delicious coffee but it let’s itself down badly by persisting on paper plates etc. in the name of sustainability despite still charging top prices. I don’t want to drink from a paper cup and pay £3.50 for it. So we won’t be back until they get the crockery out

Plenty of room inside and out so would recommend for a group visit which is something I intend to do with my cycling club. The cheese scone I had today was the best I’ve ever had and the cakes all looked amazing too. My other half had a fat rascal which he loved too. Coffees were good…we didn’t haven any problem with the cardboard cups/plates some people will whinge about anything though! The toilets were lovely…more like hotel bathroom then toilets at a cafe. Staff were friendly and met the owner as we were leaving who was also lovely. I would highly recommend this place and we will make this our new regular haunt when out on our bike rides.

Second visit inside a week, first after run with friends and today to show partner the castle discovered on said run. Both times the drinks were great and tea cake and scones excellent BUT I do not wish to sit inside a cafe and drink from a paper cup and eat from a paper tray. Sitting outside I could maybe understand it. Note signs saying please place rubbish in recycling but on return to counter was instructed to place all in black bin bag. I even pointed out it included butter wrapper and dirty napkin therefore rendering un-recyclable. Saying “it’s recyclable” is not the same as stuff actually being recycled. The young lad said "we can't do plates because of Covid"!!!! I asked how we were meant to eat it and he told us to "dip our bread in the beans"! 🤣🤣 This is 6th of August 2022!!! Ridiculous!!! Drove over for breakfast, but not really many hot options for vegetarians, just beans on toast really. Couple of items on the lunch time seem better options. Didn't mind the paper and cardboard cartons etc, but my hot chocolate was a bit too lively to work that well in the cardboard cup. Homemade cakes are good, can recommend the coffee and walnut cake, decent sized slab. (Biker sized, heh heh) Toasted teacake was OK. Pleasant enough, but a queue soon forms as it's popular here, and the service can be a bit slow. Has outdoor seating at the front, oh and it's dog friendly too. Quirky decor inside with reclaimed wood, hessian furnishings and a woodburner, cycles and whey hey a lhaverlee lil bikie, a 1936 Ariel no less. I smirked at the comment on a review that said this place is popular with "cyclists and motor bikers but don't let that put you off because they were well mannered." We bikers aren't all rufty tufty mafiosa sons of anarchy you know, strange how folk pigeonhole bikers, they're the loveliest, most genial folk I know, bikers. Books... covers...judging, but that's the 'human condition', I guess. Also sells some gorgeous cards by textile designer, Jane Kitching, whose exuberant works adorn the walls too. Yes, I would revisit, it has it's own charm for sure and I like a bit of quirk and homemade always gets a vote from me.

I love this place but having taken some friends here recently and being offered tea in a paper cup and quiche and salad in a cardboard box and no proper cutlery I was left less than impressed. Owner's surely can't use covid as an excuse...

Great little cafe, great for a light snack or just tea and cake
