Disappointing and very over priced. Having been staying at Hazelwood for a business course we went to dinner. Service was very slow, 45 mins to receive our mains - I had chicken £28 which was dry, parma ham over the top was brick hard, ordered triple cooked chips at £5 which were oily fries. Friend ordered the venison which needed a steak knife to cut it. Water glasses were not refilled. When plates were cleared we were not asked if we wanted a dessert, had to ask. Sticky toffee pudding was good but was £9 and took ages to come. Never asked if we wanted more drinks. I would definitely not eat in here again. My meal - main, desert and a coke cost me £48, a 10% service charge was added as well. Very over priced and not worth the money at all. The next time I stay I will be going somewhere else.

I was kindly sent complementary vouchers for afternoon tea by the manager, in a bid to restore faith in Hazelwood Castle after leaving a poor review. Oh dear, the exact same problems we experienced the first time (July 2022) are exactly the same. The bare minimum staff are poorly trained and my, does it show. The negative reviews for afternoon tea have a couple of common themes running through them, and this is what we experienced. I blame the food service manager....train the staff you do have to a high standard, keep on top of things, be kind, & get stuck in and the department will run like clockwork. I think the owners rely on the past glory years of this beautiful place, but you can't fool all the people all the time. Sorry won't be coming or recommending again. I wish you well.

Again, like the hotel…Lacking attention to detail. Table not set up properly when we arrived. Water jug way to big for the table. Prawn starter was very disappointing and garlic balls you could of played tennis with. Cheese soufflé was good. Main was duck and fish which was very nice. Desserts again hit the spot. Lots of cobwebs, which just need addressing and sauce stains on pipe work and walls. Again, attention to details. Breakfast was fab and service attentive.

I can highly recommend the Yorkshire Staycation package at Hazlewood Castle.Brilliant value for money. 3 nights which included a 2 course meal each evening and breakfast each morning. Also an Afternoon Tea which we ate in the courtyard on a beautiful sunny afternoon.Axe throwing was also included, although we opted for a longer lie in on that day!I upgraded to a suite which is definitely worth the money for the extra space in the room, we also treated ourselves to full body massages in Imagine spa which really added to the experience, blissful relaxing get away. For the £460 we paid for 2 people I really wasn’t expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The staff were all extremely polite, the food was hot, delicious and decent portions. It wasn’t a 5 star experience but it doesn’t claim to be and I would expect to pay much more if it was! The grounds are stunning, a walk into the forest to see the tipi’s & log cabins is fun.Thank you for an enjoyable stay, we will be back.

Ate here as part of my hotel stay.Good produce and service pretty fine.Mixed bag on dinner itself though. All a bit confused about it really. Both courses were tasty let me firstly say that.Starter was Gravadlax and in my humble view, it was exceptional. However, it was underpriced at £8 I thought.Main course was chicken. Different story. A tad steep at £23, in my opinion. A small (albeit moist) chicken breast cut into three to disguise small size I feel, along with a small handul of spindly French fries and a grilled whole tomato.Oh and the buildings and the surroundings are spectacular so why a greasy spoon paper napkin guys? An establishmentOverl of this grandeur should surely be using linen ones?????Overall I was happy enough and I'd eat here again plus my hotel stay was really good. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the adult way they are treating people when it came to Pandemic measures. Following procedures of course but doing it in as nice a way as possible.Oh, are breakfast here next morning. First class. Good portion size, beautiful local produce, cooked perfectly and service fast and fuss-free. BEAUTIFUL coffee too.

We ate here as part of our hotel package and we were pretty disappointed. The food was mediocre, the starters were quite nice but very basic. For mains we both had a chicken dish which was literally a plain oven cooked chicken breast, one whole tomato, a jug of pepper sauce and some oven chips. I had a cheese board for dessert which apparently came with fruit cake as they'd run out of crackers! I opted for bread which I think was meant to be toast, but was just like very hard stale slices of bread. My boyfriend did enjoy his brownie cheesecake thing though and the wine was nice and reasonably priced. Breakfast was worse, raw scrambled eggs and overcooked sausages - and terrible coffee and tea! They seemed to have very limited staff, I imagine due to Covid, but the restaurant and hotel were busy and the bar staff had told us they had been very busy with afternoon teas, so not sure why they haven't got all their staff back yet - I imagine to cut costs. All the staff were lovely, very young and attentive when we were at the bar/restaurant but I wouldn't recommend this place as any form of treat.

Our first experience was at the first lunch time in the gardens. Waited nearly half an hour for a waitress explained we were vegan and she explained she would bring a menu. Some time past before she brought the standard menu with almost nothing vegan on it. She apologised and said she would ask the chef what they could offer. Some time past so we chased up the waitress as she admitted she had forgotten it became clear only the side dishes were available, side salad, chips, hummus that took an age over one hour and a half. That dinner time again the menu had one item a risotto without cheese. The dinner service was something out of faulty towers delivering food to the wrong tables over and over again funny or what!!!overall if your vegan forget this hotel. Bed was hard and didn’t sleep well general service absolutely terrible not enough staff that’s obvious.

My husband and I visited a year ago on our anniversary and apart from a rude reception fell completely in love with this beautiful venue. Forward on one year and its our Silver wedding anniversary so we book a four poster room with dinner bed and breakfast and strawberries and prosseco. On arrival the usual rude reception but we anticipated that and were determined not to be put off. Then we arrived to our room. It was filthy odd as it stank of bleach. Door handles and light switches were filthy. Paintwork had never seen a cloth mirrors dusty food crumbs on furniture and litter on the floor. Husband asked for the manager because not only was the room not clean this is unacceptable during a time of risk(covid) Not once did the manager apologise or offer to clean the room again so we loaded the car and left. My suggestion would be if you value your health give this location a miss.

Having a family link to Hazlewood Castle (my mother being a wartime “Hazlewood baby”) I treated the parents to a surprise Christmas treat with lunch in the restaurant. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent - certainly home cooked through all courses - and they don’t skimp on portion size either. My advice is to have a light breakfast beforehand if you’re going for lunch(!). The historic ambience of the castle and unusual setting of the restaurant itself (in a restored cellar with stone walls literally three feet thick!) made this a great place for a memorable Christmas treat. My only caveat - and it is a relatively small one - is that the bathroom facilities are located in the main hotel area and require negotiation of a few exterior steps, which might be slightly challenging for elderly people.

Great atmosphere and service. Thank you.

Absolute atrocious food and atrocious service. The lamb was so tough and dry that they did not charge for it. The mash was not seasoned and the portion size left everyone hungry. I suspect all the meat is sliced and put under a salamander for some time, so dry and with a “ baked” finish. The chef should be ashamed letting food go out of the kitchen like that.We waited so long for every course that the mood was totally spoilt. We sat down unattended for so long that eventually we had to ask if we could order some drinks. An ordered bottle of wine was bought to the table and just ploncked on the table. Very untrained serving staff, an absolute disgrace for any restaurant. I will certainly not be returning to this restaurant and would strongly advise any one contemplating dining here to give it a big miss.

Our meal at vavasour was absolutely wonderful and i feel its a shame people only really get to know about the restaurant if they are already staying in the hotel. The food was both clever and delicious. The chef should be incredibly proud. It must be easy to get lazy in a hotel restaurant but this has definitely not happened at vavasour. The choice of wine was extensive and reasonably priced and the service second to none! Callum in particular really went above and beyond to make our evening special. I have no criticisms and only feel very grateful for a wonderful evening. In particular try the Harrogate blue for starter and the butterscotch pannacotta for dessert! Oh my!

Four of us ate here on 2 nights whilst staying at the hotel. Unfortunately the restaurant is situated outside the main hotel which meant walking through the rain to reach it. The menu was a bit on the pricey side (eg £24.50 for a pork main course). However the standard of presentation was excellent and the quality of the food was also very good. The main let-down however was the cheese selection. The menu offered either 3, 4 or 5 cheeses. I asked the waitress what the five cheeses were, she informed me that they only had 4 cheeses to offer me! The choice was either Cheddar, Wensleydale, Cheshire or a Goat's cheese. No unpasteurised (like Brie or Camembert) and no blue cheese whatsoever! Needless to say, I declined the cheeses. She said that if I visited the following evening, the selection would be better. I called in the following day and asked if they had managed to get 5 cheeses up & running to offer. The waitress said yes they indeed had 5 cheeses, so I asked what they were and was told the following..we have Cheddar, Wensleydale, Cheshire, Camembert and Feta. In God's name whose idea was it to put Feta on a cheeseboard??? Have these people no idea? So although the starter and main course were very good..and the service was indeed efficient and professional, I can only score the restaurant 3 out of 5 due to the total lack of understanding of what constitutes a decent cheeseboard.

Booked afternoon tea at the castle. When we arrived they were clearly in the midst of a wedding & there were also hotel guests to be assisted however the gentleman that assisted us made sure we were immediately welcomed and he took time to show us around the lounges and settle us by the fire in the room we chose, adding an extra log on the fire for good measure. The afternoon tea arrived consisting of a healthy portion of sandwich; delicious scone; a trio of mini desserts and plenty of tea or coffee. We were 3 ladies with plenty of catching up to do and with so many cakes we were ensconced by the fire a good couple of hours, so long that they bobbed another log on for us. We were not rushed at all and all the staff, particularly the gentleman that had seated us, were exemplary. With the staff and castle beautifully presented, warm and welcoming, just as you would hope for a country house hotel special afternoon tea. I am already looking forward to visiting with friends for a girls Christmas lunch in a month. Then I just have to think of an excuse to celebrate another afternoon tea in the new year.!

The staff were very attentive and made sure we were happy with every course and throughout the night. The food was delicious we all had three courses as it is a set menu on Christmas Eve and we were not disappointed. There was plenty of options on this menu and it was also a taster of what we have to come for our wedding. Once we had finished dining we still had drinks to finish and were not rushed to do so. We then asked if we could show my Step Mum around the castle to see how beautiful it is especially at Christmas time as this is when we are getting married and once again the staff were amazing and let us have a look around at our own pace and helped us with any queries we had. I ate breakfast in the restaurant on two days in August (the morning of my wedding and the morning after). The first time I went for breakfast it was very early and the buffet was not yet ready so they served it fresh from the kitchen and it was delicious. We ordered a variety of different meals and each was served hot, fresh and fast and was well presented and very tasty. On the second morning I ate a little later so chose from the buffet and it was equally nice to the first day, by the time it was on your plate you wouldn't know it had come from a buffet. We were still quite early (buffet had not long opened) and I was a little concerned there might be a long queue if it was later on and the restaurant was busy as it was quite a small area. However, when I went back later on to collect a room key from another guest, the restaurant was ten full, there wasn’t a particularly long queue and the food still looked and smelt lovely. The experience I had with breakfasts makes me want to try it for an evening meal... maybe we'll book for our first anniversary!

I ate here only 1 night of my stay at the hotel as I was disappointed with the food, the cost of the food and quality. The main courses were all around £20 and what was served was very small, and the taste was disappointing. I wouldn't have minded the price if the food was of a high quality but I didn't feel it was anything special and definitely not worth the price. The presentation was the best part of the meal. After a disappointing main course I had to order a pudding despite now being well over my work dinner allowance as I was still really hungry. The pudding was really nice in comparison but again not worth the money paid for it.

A well-thought out menu with high quality, locally sourced food, served beautifully. It is expensive but really worth it as a treat or special occasion. The wines come from the owners vineyards in New Zealand and were to die for.

What can you say the waiter service was excellent, very attentive and certainly made our evening (a big thank you). The food was delicious but I think the menu was just OK nothing different to anywhere else really. We did have the breakfast as we stayed over night, this was a disappointment because it was buffet style, I certainly wouldn't have expected that for this type of hotel .Nothing ever seems warm enough! Not nice. One thing that struck me what if the hotel was full and everyone came down at about the same time , it's not a big enough place.

I decided to call at this restaurant for lunch following a recommendation from the hotel upstairs on a prior visit for possible booking of the hotel for my wedding and we was celebrating our 25th anniversary together.I have to say that I hope my wedding food is not as poor as this......!!My partner decided to have the Salmon starter and I had Pate, 1. There was'nt enough bread with it, 2, no option for butter.3. Salad leaves (not salad)It also looked like something thrown together on a piece of slate.I move to my main, I had the burger, with fries, Onion Ring'S, and Side Salad.I actually got an overcooked burger, on dry bread with frozen chunky chips and bits of salad leaves. My partner got a piece of chicken breast with the bone still attached and a couple of leaves of salad and of course the Frozen chunky Chips. The cutlery definitely needed cleaning and the general ambiance was boring. The saving grace had to be the young lady serving me, she was both attentive and polite without been over obtrusive, she couldn't help us enough, I asked for ground pepper and I got it without batting an eyelid.Would I recommend this restaurant, I would hesitate for the food, but atmosphere taking the location into account then yes, but check the food standards first...

It was Stephens Birthday and we went for lunch following the quad biking in the Tudor Bar but using the Restaurant Menu.We all had different starters, all cleared their plates. The pate was voted best, but I loved my prawn cocktail. Pity the tomato soup did not come with a roll.Main courses we consumed was the beef, pork and chicken, great taste, Yorkshire puddings were to die for, roast vegetables and we got extra vegetables and extra gravy. Really went down well.Desserts we had profiteroles, Etonian mess, sticky toffee pudding and bake well tart ( should have been warm in my view) again nothing left.Coffee to finish and we left feeling full but nit bursting so all in all we will return.Staff were very attentive.

my wife and I dined here one night while staying and although the food was very tasty the whole ambience of the place lacked refinement and atmosphere with plastic topped tables (with some chips on the corners) no tablecloths and bright lighting.the service was slow and a pre ordered bottle of champagne was not at the table as requestedI would politely suggest - tablecloths and dimmed lighting or candlelight and improved service

We found this interesting venue thanks to the Gourmet Society website. Approached by a long, winding drive through woods, we discovered the fairy-tale Hazlewood Castle, set amidst picturesque gardens and grounds. The Vavasour Restaurant has a fine ambience - warm and intimate, yet with three-foot-thick walls, it takes one back to days of yore. The dinner menu offered a very wide, appetising choice; the attractively presented food was served on piping hot plates. All six of us thoroughly enjoyed the three courses (the cauliflower / cheese soup was to-die-for!); we sent compliments to the chef. Constructive criticism was the service, which began most attentively, then gradually dropped off (we waited ages for our dessert orders to be taken and later had to look for someone to bring us coffee!). The food is quite pricey, but our Gourmet Society Card discount made the final total a little more palatable. This is a unique venue with a superb chef; we will be back!

Ate here whilst staying at the hotel. It's a small restaurant for the size of the hotel and was popular. I had duck egg starter. The crispy breadcrumb duck egg was just a little overcooked but the overall flavour of the dish was first class. I followed that with rack of lamb. This was well cooked and slightly pink. The dauphinoise potato was very good and the overall parts of the meal were excellent. I finished with a sticky toffee pudding desert and thoroughly enjoyed that as well.Overall this is a very good restaurant however at £75 for the 5 courses, my wife had a starter and desert, the price was for me 15% too high for the standard, it was good restaurant standard rather than fine dining. Staff were good, again not fine dining level but hard working and reasonably efficient.

I booked this restaurant for my sister's birthday lunch, having seen someone else's review of this restaurant for the same kind of event. They said they'd had really good service. I therefore called and booked, telling them the reason for booking.Unfortunately we would have to say we got the kind of service you would expect from a busy local cafe which has a great reputation for good food.... Except for the majority of the time we were the only people in the restaurant! (Although people seemed to be rushing past our room with plates which I assume was for people in the main hotel upstairs rather than the restaurant). In fairness the food was nice, and we enjoyed our meals. I did however have to quickly ask my family if anyone wanted sauces before the hostess rushed off, and I got the impression I'd been a bit of a pain for doing so. We also asked if the heating could be turned up (we were all shivering and desperate to put our coats back on) and after a cursory check that the radiator was turned the whole way she just said "sorry, it can't go up any higher" and rushed off. She didn't even ask if we wanted to move to a table further inside the restaurant! The main issue however was that although members of staff were constantly going past our room ( with an archway so we could be seen if they'd bothered to look) they did not come to check if we were enjoying our meals or needed anything. Ten minutes after we'd all finished and not managed to catch the attention of the three members of staff rushing last, I stood up and moved towards the archway saying to my family that I was going to find someone as this was getting ridiculous now. I then found out the kitchen was just outside and round the corner, and the main reason for it being so cold was because they were leaving the main door to the restaurant open so they could run back and forth with dishes without having to open it, with no thought to any customers in the restaurant!I then was asked how they could help and I had to ask them if they could please take our plates away and offer us dessert menus. In my opinion, you shouldn't have to do that! The service was not more attentive after this, and I felt quite uncomfortable that they'd heard me complaining to my family. However if they will not even glance at their customers or check they're happy (as is usual in the service industry) then I'm not sure how else I was to have got their attention. There was no apology either. We were ever so disappointed in this restaurant, we'd thought that the location was stunning, and we'd assumed that in a place where the prices are quite high, we could expect premium service. To be honest, I really have had far better service in a Beefeater. The food was lovely but I would recommend not eating there for lunch unless you're a resident at the hotel or perhaps using the spa. It's a big disappointment otherwise!

We ate here recently for our wedding anniversary. We got married at Hazlewood and love the venue. It's perfect. We have eaten at the restaurant many times and always enjoyed the food however on a recent visit I couldn't believe the cost of some of the items. Deserts are £9 each. £9!!!! Do you get the whole cake for that price? Sausage and Mash is £14.50 (note 3 small pork sausages on a bed of mash) and this wasn't with Veg. Veg was an extra £4. Yes I paid £18.50 for Sausage and Mash. That is getting towards steak territory. I have no issues with paying for a good meal and don't get me wrong the food is relatively good but that was obscenely over priced and a real shame. Only visit if you have a taste card. Unfortunately our anniversary was on a day when the offer was not on.

This restaurant attached to Hazlewood castle is outstanding. The menu has some great items on it and the food was cooked to perfection. With a large wine selection and very friendly staff there is very little to pick fault in.We also had breakfast here and the breakfast menu had loads of items to choose from. Added to the value of our stay

In a cellar no one else there , could not attract attention of staff to give them an order, asked for a wine list which never came. The toilet was outside and up the stone steps....miles away. Chicken Caesar salad overpriced.

The restaurant is tucked away in a corner outside the main castle, long walk from car park, not good at all in bad weather. Wouldn't fancy this on a cold January evening.Food really good, staff very friendly & helpful. Great choices on menu, difficult to choose which I think is great, well presented & good quality.Sadly toilets are outside and back up some steep steps into castle, it was a rainy miserable night, so not really good if you need to visit the ladies during your evening. Quiet despite bring Friday, but the restaurant seems to be an afterthought to the main activity of Hazelwood Castle which is weddings, it seems to be the primary function of the venue & thus not much atmosphere. Enjoyed the evening, but with the restroom & parking situation spoils the overall experience.

Has been cleaned up and looks much better. Unfortunately, you can get more than a pint and a bag of crisps here. People were coming in to score and staff are aware. Sitting area out front is nice to people watch and the weird comings and goings in Taddy.
