The Fish Bank in Selby

Nice chippy. The fish was lovely and light crispy batter, the chips are done well, the curry was a bit of a different taste but I quite liked it sweet and zesty £12.50 for fish chips and a drink I think is about the going rate, staff seemed pleasant and customer focused and not miserable. Would come again.

How this place is supposed to be one of the best in the area beets me only went because Wolsey's was closed will not be going again

Fish appeared to be large but was all batter. Never been to a fish shop where the chips are weighed. I went here 6 weeks ago and same complaint went tonight hoping things had improved but I'm afraid not.

Brilliant fish and chips (best mushy peas in sherburn), staff are very friendly and happy to help, very clean, modern atmosphere.

my daughter called to collect on her way to ours in south milford, hungry and expecting their usually good fish/chips what looked so appealing crispy batter was just that when cutting into the so called fish, vry little of it an expensive experience @£23.70 and one Iwill not be repeating, in future will be plying my custom at the other fish shop lower down the street

We order fish and chips from here around once every two weeks. Normally it is first class. In general the fish has large flakes and beautiful light crispy batter. Tonight it was sadly very disappointing. The fish seemed to be a tail end with thin poor fish. It also had an excessive amount of batter which was not as light as normal. If this had been my first visit I wouldn’t be returning. However I hope this is just a blip (different supplier/ frier ? ). I will treat this as hopefully a one off and certainly give them another chance. Under normal circumstances I would recommend them to anyone.

Just been ordered 2 fish 1 chips and large peas when she passed it over I saw there were no peas so I paid again. When I got home only 1 fish.i didn't take much notice how much I paid shouldn't have to not happy.

Fish is great but he buys in pre prepped chips and they're god awful. I never understand why this place wins awards over Woolsley Fish and chips shop down the road. Better fish and chips there

Small fish cooked too long ,Chips twice cooked not to my taste a lot thrown away ,some like this shop but not me.

We went on a Saturday afternoon, 3pm and bought £6 specials from the deals list. Small fish, chips, mushy peas & a battered sausage. All 4, cleared their box it came in, saying that was spot on. Helpful staff & few minutes wait while cooking them. Sat outside in the garden at the tables, sorted. Will go again, each time we are nearby. 5 minutes from Squires bike meeting place, so call in.

First week experience fish and chips we're good not the best I've ever had second week they were average at best Think they are very busy and are struggling to cope, so the quality has been sacrificed asked for lightly battered and they were no different to ordinary batter quite dissapointing really Hi Since I posted my review The Fish Bank has really got its act together, The Fish are great and the lightly batterd Fish is so much lighter , The chips are real Quality and the service is fast with a numbered system Thanks for taking the criticism on board it has really worked well done Fish bank and staff

Chips are a little undercooked.

Myself and my children have just had the best lunch experience here. The service was excellent and very personable and the food was delicious. The lunch time special of small fish, small sausage, chips and peas was the perfect size for me and very reasonably priced at £6. My kids ate all theirs and loved every bit of it. The whole place is very clean and well organised and there is a nice enclosed garden at the back to sit and enjoy your food. Definitely coming back and recommend 100%.

Too many staff for a small fish shop. Too much gabbing.

Just had the lunch special Fish,chips, sausage and choice of sauce £6. Really enjoyed it, was nicely cooked and tasty. Sat in the garden at the back. My main reason for this review is because of the staff. So pleasant, polite and helpful. Was nice to walk in to a shop and staff are smiling.

Great chippy, large chip portions and tasty fish. Couldn’t have hoped for anything more really. A bit of a drive for me but it was worth it.

Excellent quality fish with delicious light batter..even the bread roll was good ! Highly impressed on my first visit.

Love this place and would certainly recommend it. Excellent food and very friendly staff. However on this occasion I believe they were talkative and friendly to the detriment of concentration. I ordered two fish, small chips and small peas. I double checked my order and the staff confirmed and double checked it. On getting home I had been given one fish and two lots of chips. This is what I was charged for despite it being the wrong order. I will continue to use The Fish Bank and I’m sure it was a genuine mistake but memo for the staff. Continue to be pleasant and friendly but also CONCENTRATE on what you’re doing.

First visit for quite some time. Very pleasant and efficient staff in a spotlessly clean environment. Fish and chips were first class. Would certainly recommend.

I read about this wonderful place on the internet today and I have had the best fish and chips ever. The staff are amazing great to talk to and that’s what is good about this place as well. Best fish and chips no one will beat them ever.

This week’s visit was to The Fish Bank, Sherburn in Elmet, Leeds. Due to recent press releases and being in the last 40 of the fish and chip shop awards. I requested a lightly battered fish with chips and a normal fish on its own. Well they cant determine the difference so no point requesting lightly battered, they were both exactly the same! Chips really undercooked. The fish was very greasy and evidently wasn’t drained at all. Batter was extremely soggy and wet. The peas and curry were very nice. One of the girls serving needs to curb the attitude with customers too! So disappointed with tonight’s chippy tea I must say.

Very nice fish and chips. Portion sizes were spot on, and the fish had a lovely light crispy batter. Highly recommend the mushy peas- they’re really tasty! The shop itself is clean, smart and modern.

I can't quite understand how The Fish Bank is award winning as the quality of the food isn't brilliant. I find the batter quite tasteless and often quite claggy. (if that's a word!). The chips are also a little overcooked and a little crispy on the outside. I have been in a few times to ensure it wasn't a once off, and it's not. I have to say each time I ask for scraps and the first time I got. handful, and the last time they said they didn't have any - it's leftover batter so surely they must have had some!! And also the service is quite slow with a seemingly complicated ticket process when all people want is either fish or some other protein with chips! I'll now wait until I'm in Selby to go to Mr C's - that's award winning fish and chips.

Update to the earlier review... We went a few weeks back. Much better. Good quality fish, chips and batter! Will definitely return again now 👍 Original review - We've been a bit disappointed on a few occassions now. Would love both fish and chips to be cooked a bit longer to get them nice and crispy!

I got a disappointing extra large fish @ £11, it was no bigger than a normal one at £6 I think its time this was looked into? On another thing though its my only complaint after many meals from there Thanks

I have never had a bad fish and chips here. Although busy, they are diligent and don't forget any of the complicated order requirements I sometimes give them!

Consistently poor. Every week. Recent weeks quality has dramatically dropped. Chips are pale and bland, almost like theyre undercooked. Fish is 90%batter, 10%fish.

Been wanting to try this place a while but I live 10 miles away. Yesterday I drove home making a pit stop here from the seaside. Excellent service and great tasting fish. Would say prices are on the cheaper side to what I'm used to paying which is a bonus. Thumbs up thank you

Foods half decent and price is average for fish and chips however the size of the portion is just enough to fill a 4 year old I’m still hungry so I would say expensive for portion size. customer service is poor, Food was placed infront of us and no words exchanged.

The fish and chips here are amazing and I would highly recommend. The only downside is the music is always really loud and having sensory sensitivities, the loud music always triggers me.

Awful “fish”. If only there was fish in the batter than would have been a start. Batter was hard and difficult to eat. Very small amount of fish in proportion the the batter, and what was there was over cooked. Very disappointed. Also a long wait and there was only 2 people ahead in the queue. Won’t be returning.

Well I'm sorry I cannot agree with the three recent reviews that acorded the Fish Bank a score only one rating. Like my review title says, the better of the two. I opted for the sacmpi and there's twelve of them, never got that amount before in any restaurant or pub. All freshly cooked and chips of a high quality. Staff friendly and efficient, good Yorkshire sized portions and the premises spotless and modern. Need to revise the prices on the menu though. Car parking only a few minutes distant over the road.

First time - food was excellent. Will certainly be returning. Ordered easily on line and was available as soon as we walked through the door.

Went today to be honest only because fancied fish and chips and Wolsey fisheries also in sherburn was closed. And to say that i herd that they own wolsey all i can say is please please dont change wolsey to your standards. you may have a mor modern looking shop but, its not all about how modern u look its also about quality. To say u are up for a national fish and chips award my suggestion would be for you to withdraw your shop and change to wolseys if you want any chance of winning. Attitude of staff was very poor, scale of menu was poor for a fish shop didnt sell scallops, fish cakes or pies. cost of fish and chips was very expensive. Fish was very thin and batter was like raw dough. and under cooked. chips were under cooked. Curry sauce was like water tasted bad and not traditional chip shop curry. my suggestion to anyone would be if looking for fish and chips in sherburn then go wolsey fisheries.

Best fish and chip shop other than the coast. The fish is beautifully cooked and very fresh and the portions are very good. Excellent service and I always order online.

We called after visiting Fairburn Ings nature reserve .I had read the reccomendation on line in Yorkshire Post that The fish Bank was voted one of the best in Yorkshire and they were not wrong .Tremendous fish and chips and not greasy at all .Cooked fresh while you wait .We ate in the outside seating area as it was a dry day.Would highly reccomend .

Friendly staff, excellent food. Average prices! Edit : went in 12th August 2022 wearing an xmas themed shirt and tie. They put "merry christmas" stickers on my order. Priceless! Very pleased :-) excellent chips, fish and sausage as always.

Not satisfied with the portion of the fish and chips. For starters the gravy was all clumpy, the chips were a bit tough and the fish was tiny for 8 pound something the fish looked like a kids or a small at least the other fish and chip shop gives you a decent size fish and chips for your money

Food quality has always been excellent here, and Im giving 5 stars as Ive now tried the online ordering service which was spot-on - ready for collection as i walked through the door, and separate boxes/bags for everything including scraps so that it was all still crisp on arrival home. Well done.

Good quality fish and chips. Not too oily or greasy. Batter is light and crispy and the fish was beautifully white and flakey. Mushy peas were tasty but with a little too much liquid. Curry sauce was not as hot as I would normally like it and it tasted a little bit too fruity (more raisins than I'm used too maybe?) But it was still a pleasant sauce to accompany the fish and chips. Overall a good chippy and one I will definitely be using again.

When fish bank opened the quality was very good for quite some time, pre and during the pandemic it was terrible and felt like feeding of the masses regardless of quality, people were queuing out the door because of the novelty at the time of having fish and chips when everywhere was mostly closed. At this moment in time the quality from the fish bank is probably the best fish and chips I have ever had from takeaway anywhere in the UK and that's no exaggeration. The service seemed modern and polished using a new numbered order process, staff working well together and quality of fish and chips perfect. Definitely recommended.

Fish was nice and staff was so nice

Not been for a while, now serving cod which is nowt like haddock was, was mushy, chips used to be alot chunkier now small scrap ends covered in fat, seems like theyre now buying cheaper stuff and charging same price, didnt even have any change for a £10 note, last time ill be going again, gone way way down.

Ordered the 'fish bank special' didn't get the breadbun only fish chips and sauce. Ended up costing more than if I ordered separately. The chip portions are getting smaller everytime I go. It's overpriced for what it is

Absolutely disgusting. The fish was grey, tasteless with very greasy batter. Was very disappointed.... will not be buying from there again. The chips were okay but nothing to shout about.

Really nice fish and chips but the web site menu is misleading as contains lower prices than actually being charged. My order, according to the menu on here, should have totalled £22.60 not the £25.15 charged. The online order page does show the true prices. Either change the menu prices on your site or charge that amount! The prices are ok but misleading customers definately isn't.

Really bad service have me go change a £20 because they didn’t have change to come back with a £5 note and still didn’t have £1.50 change so wouldn’t serve me ended up going to Wolsey fisheries just down road is much better service and food

Just had the best fish and chips ever. The fish portion was regular, but really large. The fish was delicious and the batter thin and crispy. No oil on the fish and the chips were dry and crispy. Really impressed and can't wait to revisit Extremely well done. Also the young staff were polite and cheerful.

Customer service!!! training is required by one member of staff....Ordered and paid online, on arriving and presenting my order number, miss strop told me to "go away, you have the wrong shop" I showed her my online order on my phone, clearly showing the words...Fish bank...only to receive the teenage tut and death stare, again she said told me i was in the wrong shop!!! Then one member of staff said "what's your name" I told her, then she told Miss Strop, there's his order. On receiving my order Miss Strop, almost threw the bag across the counter and said "enjoy" again with her death stare!....poor, training/manners required Other thing to add, if you are going to wear a face mask, put it over your nose!!!

Warned about this place by a lot of people but have always seen a queue outside so thought it can't be that bad. Ooops. Fish & chips and a fishcake: fish ok(ish) but small; chips stale; my wife couldn't finish her fishcake as it had a big chunk of uncooked potato in it! This despite being told at the time of ordering how their fishcakes are all hand made to order, and how good they are. I don't think we'll be going back there.
