After being a regular visitor every week for a number of years I was served as a starter the twice baked souffle which arrived like a pancake to my surprise. I tried it and it tasted like soggy scrambled egg. I had a quiet word with the restaurant manager . The rest of the meal was very average. However on returning home some 1 mile away I was violently ill and had to call the emergency doctor, The following morning I telephoned the hotel to let Sharon the owner aware. She as usual was not available. The next day the Hotel telephoned to say that they had cancelled our egular booking and not to go again. This was due to making a quiet complaint. I then visited the hotel one morning to discuss this with the owner who again would not come out and see me. Her partner then came and said tsssssswe could come again. NOT LIKELY - They have lost their most regular customer.

Such a shame. Turkey was salty and overcooked. My companion had beef bourguignon which was served in a ramekin dish with a pastry topping! How unusual. The meat was very dry and no gravy. Too salty. Dessert was Christmas pudding with watery (no) brandy sauce. Tastless. The only plus point was the friendly staff. We were sat in a dining room and were the only people there. No atmosphere for Christmas lunch.

A really lovely Sunday Lunch for three of us. Given the grandeur of the surroundings and the wonderful service and real tablecloths and napkins, I was pleasantly surprised that the food was only £20 per person. The Curried Cauliflower soup was to die for and the ''penny loaves' that I remember from my childhood were warm and delicious. The main course arrived plated with a Yorkshire Pudding filled with root vegetables. I should have liked some green vegetables too. The desserts were very enjoyable and one of our group had the cheese board which is quite often at a supplementary cost, but it was included with three kinds of cheese, grapes, and the most wonderful biscuits I've ever tasted. Service was exemplary and we can't wait to visit again. Only one disappointment.....we hoped to go again THIS Sunday but it's very difficult to contact the place. We phoned several times during Wednesday and gave up and booked elsewhere. We'll persevere again though very soon !!

We were looking for a romantic meal out together and found this lovely location. The restaurant was decorated well and we got a window seat to over look the grounds as the sun was going down. We had 3 courses, including the cheese souffle, mackerel, and vegetarian pasta. Everything tasted amazing. The waitresses were helpful, although the wine server didn't look very happy the whole time. Overall we had a lovely evening and can't wait to go back.

After staying at the hotel, I was taken aback how friendly the staff were, from housekeeping to the receptionist the bar staff and the restaurant couldn’t do enough for me . It was lovely that all the Wolfhounds were catered for and that is no mean feet in itself . Although some of the decor was a little shabby and looking rather tired the housekeeping did everything they could to keep the place looking neat and tidy. I was told the hotel was being renovated slowly and I can’t wait to see the results on my return visit, wishing them all the best in the future.

We have lived in nearby Selby for almost 8 years but this is the first time my husband and I have tried this restaurant. Our wedding anniversary seemed like the perfect occasion for this - it lived up to all expectations and more. The welcome was warm, with a friendly ambiance. We were seated at a lovely table near the window overlooking the garden. The food was absolutely delicious. We had duck spring rolls to start which bore no resemblance to usual Chinese fair and were crisp and flavorful. Followed by mains of rump steak and salmon. Again a feast for the tastebuds. I had a wonderful raspberry parfait (mouthwatering) and my husband had the cheese board. One thing he was particularly pleased about - the excellent bottle of Rose wine was left on ice for us to pour when we wanted. No fuss or rush, just efficient understated service from the waiter.

We went as a family taking parents who are 89 years old and have a long history of having family meals and functions at the hotel. My wife and I spent our wedding night there 32 years ago. Our meal today was dreadful even our parents who have dementia commented that the meal hadn’t been exactly what we had hoped for. We are so disappointed that this lovely local hotel has become so run down and the food and service dreadful, if a chef had been on the premises I would be very surprised. The beef was inedible and the two who had mackerel starter said it was disgusting. I can’t figure out how sticky toffee pudding can be served cold but taste burnt with a blackened top. We have had many enjoyable times at this hotel in the past but will never visit again whilst under the current management

We have just returned from a night’s stay, including dinner, booked through Secret Escapes. We arrived early, expecting to leave our bags and return later, but were greeted by a lovely young lady who immediately allocated us an upgraded room. The room was spacious and quaint and it as good to see good quality products on the tea tray as well as complimentary water in glass bottles. The bathroom was a good size and soap dispensers avoided the need for little plastic bottles which invariably get thrown away half full.

We'd booked for four of us for a small special dinner for my mother in laws 80th birthday on 28th October. Although there was no acknowledgement of this occasion whilst we were there, even though I'd added it to the booking details. We'd also been there for her 70th birthday and had a great experience. We had to ask the if they could put our coats somewhere as we left the bar area. We also had to request a wine list. The waitress knocked a full glass of chanpagne off the tray all over my mother in law me and the table shortly after we say down in the restaurant. Of course accidents can happen, but I had to ask her to change the wet tablecloth and cutlery. We never heard a 'sorry' only a 'that's never happened before'. The only compensation was not charging us for that glass of champagne and I didn't want to make a fuss. Two other accidents/spillages happened at an adjoining table too by another waitress. The meal was pretty good. But sadly the dining room is in need of investment and refurbishment and a through cobwebbing. Two large cobwebs were in a corner to near our table at table height that had obviously been missed for sometime. I did point this out. There didn't seem to be a manager or supervisor on duty that evening. The ceiling plasterwork and window frames are quite deteriorated in some areas too. The staff seemed young and inexperienced, although there was plenty of them. One of the most offputting things was when the staff started to move around and lay up the empty tables for Sunday morning breakfast at 9 pm whilst there was still three tables of us eating dinner! The cutlery drawer and activity made it very noisy. We finished up as quickly as we could, missing coffee and left at 9.20pm, as it then had all the ambience of a motorway service cafe, only one table of two was then still occupied. Overall we were very dispappointed/unlucky with our experince, which is a pity as the building and grounds are lovely.

This is the 3rd afternoon tea I have had here in the last 4 months. The food is amazing! Especially the homemade scones very light and tasty. The Monks Fryston tea is also very nice and I highly recommend it. I have only done the afternoon tea during the week so the restaurant hasn’t been busy. It is child friendly I have a 3 month old and he has been with me twice born and once whilst I was still pregnant. Good access for a pram and the staff are always very friendly. The setting is stunning and we always take a walk to the pond and round the orchard seeing the ducks and the geese. The only criticism if you could call it that is the baby changing unit could do with upgrading as it’s a changing mat on a table in the disabled toilet and it is quiet low down and wobbles. I will always keep coming back here especially for the afternoon tea and look forward to tasting the rest of the menu.

Visited the restaurant as part of a 'Dinner, Bed and Breakfast' deal whilst staying at the hotel. It was a Monday evening and very quiet and peaceful. The service was great - not too overbearing but attentive when needed and the food was outstanding. Loads of flavours and not too over-facing and the dishes that needed to be hot were piping hot. One of the best cheese boards I've had in a long while too. If this restaurant was in the centre of Leeds or York it would be full every night of the week! Compliments to all!

Our afternoon tea looked impressive and was nicely presented on a 3 tier stand. The scones were fresh and delicious and the tea made with real leaves, not tea bags, was also good. The finger sandwiches were not made with good quality bread and we didn't enjoy some of the fillings. The smoked salmon and beef were ok but the egg didn't taste of anything. The banana bread tasted strange and was not enhanced by the chocolate icing. The fruit cake with cheese was nice but we didn't enjoy the summer fruit roulade. The passion fruit jelly was u usual. Not sure if I like it or not. In hindsight we would have been better hosing the cream tea with just the scones rather than the full monty.

Stayed here for a weekend with my friend. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. The Hall itself is stunning, as are the grounds. Our room was slightly dated although not to the point of complaining. The food was included on the first night of our stay (which was stunning), however, we also needed to pay full price on the second night because the only other place to eat in Monks Fryston isThe Crown (which doesn't serve food on a Sunday night). The food again was stunning, however, we felt a bit rushed towards the end of the meal as we were having our desert, when the music was suddenly turned off and we were plunged into silence, with staff hovering around (the restaurant should be open until 9.30pm and this was 9.15pm), and it wasn't cheap! Most of the staff though were very helpful and friendly but we also felt that the waitress on the second morning was very pushy, insisting that we order hot food before we'd even looked at the menu, which was a shame. However, their Granola was the most amazing Granola I've ever tasted, so that made up for it! Overall, it was a relatively nice experience.

Had not been to Monk Fryston Hall in years, our last visit was to celebrate the in laws 50th Wedding Anniversary 7 years ago. A lovely sit down three course meal was had then, in the main room with approximately 15 guests. Our return here was the choice of my mother in laws to celebrate her birthday, she visits here often to meet up with family for coffee. Afternoon tea was booked for 10 guests. On arrival at the hotel it had a lovely atmosphere. A roaring fire near the entrance, huge christmas tree and a piano playing a variety of tunes. Got some lovely family photos in this area. The gentleman who showed us to our table was smartly dressed and courteous and took some orders for bar drinks while we waited for other guests to arrive. The round table we were seated at was at the front of the room in a bay window, this felt a little cramped for the 10 guests that were to be seated round it. Several glasses that were on the table for the water were very dusty and dirty, my son's actually had lipstick markings on the rim of his glass. These were taken away by a waiter and fresh one's brought back. My husband and I and other family members were quite shocked also at the room. There was paint peeling of the ceiling in places and dirty dust was clearly visible on some of the coving. I personally did not visit the toilets but I was informed later that these were also not very clean and in need of a refurbishment. The afternoon tea that was served was lovely, but nothing too special. We had a fair wait for it all to arrive at the table as we were told there had been a mishap in the kitchen! Only a few finger sandwiches each and then an abundance of cake, scones with cream and jam, mince pies, small cheesecakes and christmas cake with cheese. A great selection of tea and coffee was on offer, served in a mix match of cups and saucers. The pots of tea and coffee were re-fillable on request. Understandably a lot of sweet items were left and we were provided with a couple of large brown take away bags should we wish to take anything home with us.All the staff were smartly dressed and courteous at times. However, they did not seem jolly or happy in any way and didn't want to chat to the guests for too long. The girl who served our table was yawning several times, not happy about something at all and when my son tried to crack a joke with her she just gave him a hard stare! The three course meal we had here several years ago was splendid and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. However, although the afternoon tea served was tasty and well presented I do feel it was only average and we have had far better afternoon teas in other restaurants before.

Booked for my wifes works Christmas night out and at 50 quid for two was expecting something half decent and certainly the place looked great as we arrived so expectations were high. The prices for drinks were what you expect for a restaurant a tenner for a pint and large white wine but then when my wife got a second she was given what could only be classed as a small but still we were charged for a large and the bar staff were adamant about the size in spite of it being in a thimble size glass.Still we had the food to look forward to and the starters were ok nothing special but edible although the bread was barely this side of stale. But then came the main course and oh dear very Oliver Twist! I know mass produced Christmas meals have a certain sameness about them but really? I was one of the lucky ones as I got three marble sized roast potatoes to go with both the brussel sprouts, a couple of slices of carrot and a couple of slices of wafer thin turkey, pigs in blankets and stuffing were advertised and duly there was a ten pence sized disc of stuffing and I swear half a cocktail sausage all covered in a watery mess that was apparently gravy.Additional pigs in blankets were requested and a plate duly turned up to be devoured by the starving group. Can't complain about dessert as the cheese board was surprisingly pretty good by the evenings (rather low) standards.Still we had the disco to look ofrward to and would have done had the DJ managed to leave the early 1980's again I know that there was some good music in that era but Tiffany as the highlight of the music? All in all a most disappointing start to the festive season and I will certainly never set foot in the place again. For fifty quid we could have had a great meal at Oddfellows, Saffron or Elmet kitchen!

We were served by Becky and Marius who looked after us well. The building is full of history and oozes charter. We will be back

I went for the experience....glad not for the food! Coffee was terrible (they were shocked I asked for a refund but were very willing to oblige) & the soup was pitiful (mixed vegetable). It was watery pureed celery/asparagus w/ thyme. For £5/$7.50, it was a waste of money. However, they did provide gluten free bread upon request. My friend had onion soup which was better but still not good. I felt like I was a monk indeed...eating horrible food.Skip it!!

After our previous visit some time ago, my friend and I decided to try again because we like the place so much. We have visited this place many times over the last 20 years and seen many changes, not all for the good. Last time we were bitterly disappointed. This time, what a difference!! The food was excellent, the service and ambience very good. We will visit again with confidence.

Attended a friends wedding which was a fantastic day from start to finish. The location and settings are beautiful and something other venues would not be able to compete with.I have to say the hotel is lacking some TLC and is a little dated. The rooms were okay but for the price I did expect more.Breakfast was chaos with tea and toast coming much later than when we arrived I think they struggled to cater for the whole wedding party who had stayed over.Lovely girl on reception. Taylor I think her name was, credit to the place :)

We were given a Travelzoo voucher for a 2 course lunch for 2 people with a glass of Prosecco each. We booked lunch on a Thursday and it was very quiet indeed. We were a bit early so had a look round before going to the dining room. It is in need of a bit of TLC, but the place has charm. The ladies toilets were modern and clean, but apparently the men's were not very nice. The staff were all very pleasant. We had our Prosecco in a lovely oak panelled bar where the daily papers were available to read. The menu choices were excellent - we had starters and mains on our deal but could have had a sweet for extra payment. We ordered in the bar and went through to the dining room when the food was ready. Rolls and butter, and a jug of water were brought just before the starters. No pressure to order extra drinks, The food was well presented, portion sizes just right, and taste excellent. No complaints at all about the service or food. After lunch we had a stroll around the gardens, but they also looked in need of a good tidy. Overall a very nice lunch, but lacking ambience as it was so quiet and in need of refurbishment in some areas.

Had the set meal in the restaurant and the food was fantastic , started with the corned beef option , then we both had the lamb and it was cooked to perfection and the rhubarb crumble was to die for . Had breakfast next morning and that was very good too . Compliments to the chef .

Manager? Stains on his jacket and trousers and then staring as I went to the toilet. Toilets very dirty, cleaned it before I used it. Massive pieces of carrots as a veg dish, just rubbish. Plaice over cooked. Just bad on all levels. Cannot believe how busy it was. Lack of choice in the area?? Lack of good facilities means they get away with it. Web page wanting staff....well yes and a new owner and banker, place falling apart.

The grounds has a lake and ducks there is a woods so it's large area the hotel is in a small village and there is a bus stop which stops outside the gate which we took advantage of and had a nice trip into York . The restaurant was pleasant and the food was presented well and was very nice . The breakfast was excellent cooked to perfection and a good choice of cereal fruit and other things on top of full selection of cooked breakfast the staff were also excellent and very friendly overall we had a very pleasant stay .

My cousin had his wedding here, and they are vegetarians. I can honestly say it's was one of the best vegetarian meals I've ever had, and such a great place, nothing was too much trouble for them.

The food here during our two day break was lovely. Varied menus with choice. A childrens menu also very good. Some locally sourced meats and produce etc which is always nice to hear local businesses supportibg each other. Whilst visiting a whole bus of people stopped for their meal. The atmosphere was fun but relaxed.

Lovely sunny day yesterday but didn't have much time for a major event.Just myself, son and grandson, so decided on a walk around the gardens followed by coffee and cake on the terraceAsked for coffee and cake, buns, croissant or danish pastries etc. This was at 11:45 and unbelievably there was nothing on offer other than biscuits, so no choice and accepted the biscuits. If unexpected guests turned up at my place they would always have a good selectionof cake etc.The coffee was brought out by two waitresses and in the most ridiculous cups, Uri Geller bent spoons and the tra on which the cups were setOne was spilt on arrival but there were no napkins, or offer to clean it up.Out came the biscuits (two shortbread and four cookies with burnt currants) lost on a large plate.I didn't ask but seeing the coffee was £3.50 per cup I was thinking they were complimentary.Later went to pay but the place was deserted till I came across one person setting a table, who looked at me like I had no right to be there and said "can I help you" in a way that again suggested I had no right to be thereI was ordered to go to the bar when i was hit with a bill for £12.00 of which £5.00 was for the biscuits!I seriously felt like I should have done a runner and, just for the record, I am a retiredGP and in my seventies.Other than that, my son commented quite rightly that the gardens weren't very well maintained. We were sitting on a grassed area where the borders had overgrown grass, gone to seed, and with tall weeds as a feature!I haven't been there for very many years but have to say that the food was ok but not exceptional!

I took a friend here for lunch, she is following the Slimming World eating plan and the chef did a great job of modifying her lunch to meet the criteria - 10/10 for that. I ordered the Ploughmans lunch and was so disappointed (see picture). The ham looked lovely as did the cheese and chutney. The problem is one tiny bit of green does not a balanced meal make. It was more of a garnish than a salad. Everything else was so good that it made me come to the conclusion that the chef is trying to fit it all on this rather attractive bit of wood, so with two large slices of ham and the chutney, there now isn't room for salad. As someone who loathes eating off even a very nice bit of wood i would rather a dinner plate with more salad, or the wood if they must, and a bowl of salad. I didn't eat it but ordered instead the soup, which was delicious and they refunded me in full and let me have the soup gratis. I do hope they get more salad involved in the Ploughmans Lunch in future as everything else was really good.

Stayed at hotel last week for 2 nights with a travel zoo offer, breakfast and the first nights dinner. The food was exellent and staff friendly and helpful. We were given a superior room instead of the standard double as one was available. The room was well appointed and had an older traditional style with also a bath in the ensuite. The whole stay was perfect and even a bus stop immediately outside the gates, we travelled to york, changing at Selby, the connections were frequent. Yes the hotel is in need of some tlc in some areas but the old features add to the charm of the hotel. On the day we left the dining room was full of guests. I would definitely stay again, thank you to the staff!

Average really but not bad. Service was a little slow but the menu had a good range of choices for a lunchtime. There were 4 of us dining and two peoples meals were good and other two were quite dry (beef). It wasn't terrible, it was just ok really.

I have been to this hotel before and had a bar lunch very good. But seeing a offer on livingsocial for 2 course lunch and glass of wine chance to go back again. We were a party of 6 service very good not to formal the meal was a very well cooked something for every one.The dining room looks great was about 3/4 full and a wedding going on in hotel but we were served quickly and made to feel welcome. Disappointed. Firstly we arrived, the car park was busy. Seemed people park there that aren't visiting the pub. Very small for the establishment. We had to drive around twice to eventually find a parking spot. Our drinks order was taken quickly and then our food order was taken. Great 👍 The food came. The fish and chips was a good size portion. The roasts on the other hand. Very thin pieces of meat. Large yorkies. OK veg. Now the roast potatoes... I'm not often disappointed by roast dinner veggies. However these roast potatoes were the worst I've ever tasted. My knife wouldn't even cut them the skin was like leather! I have no idea how they managed to get them like that. Inedible! The service was slow and seemed stretched for the amount of tables. We asked for a dessert menu and one was never brought, after finishing our drinks we left without ordering. Would not rush to come back for the food.
