The Varsity Club in Oxford

We recently held our celebration at this venue, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The location is absolutely stunning, and the team went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. Sukanya, the Bookings and Office Manager, and her team were incredibly professional, attentive, and accommodating from start to finish. Even when a minor hiccup occurred, it was handled with such care and efficiency by Chante and the rest of the staff that it didn’t affect our day in the slightest. Their dedication to ensuring everything went smoothly was genuinely impressive. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue or team for our special day. I wholeheartedly recommend this place for any event—you’ll be in great hands! Thank you, Sukanya and the team, for making our celebration so memorable!

Hosted a matriculation BOP of about 200 people here across three colleges - Somerville, GTC and Kellogg and it was great. We booked the venue quite late but the venue and the event was confirmed in hours. Moreover, the Varsity Club group was indeed absolutely exceptional with planning and service. The students, especially the new comers to Oxford, had a superb time and spoke very highly for the event and the club! The cocktails are great and the people are very welcoming and friendly! Highly recommend!

Booked and Sat on the rooftop, lovely views, Molly our waitress was lovely. Food was amazing. We booked downstairs in the bar area also so we could have a seated area - we asked for cocktails but they said no table service in this area, slightly disappointed as the bar was busy. It was quiet until the DJ came on, he was very good with great music and a good atmosphere.

We had a small wedding reception at varsity club, 2nd floor. Also had the POD on the rooftop in the evening, the atmosphere was perfect. we loved every bit of the day. The staff did an amazing job at helping planning and organising it all for us. They were so accommodating, flexible, and nothing was too much trouble. We particularly would like to thank Sukanya, Lavinia and Shubham for their time and dedication. Can't forgot all staff behind the bar on the day, you all work so hard. in particular Chante! thanks for helping make it a special day for us!

We hosted my son's 21st birthday for about 90 people on the 2nd floor last weekend. The room was perfect, bar staff couldn't have been more helpful and the DJ was fab, judging his audience just right. Overall a huge success, would highly recommend as a venue.

We rented the private bar on level 2 for a birthday celebration. The whole evening went fantastically well, thanks to all of the staff who were friendly and attentive to all our requests. The food provided was lovely and everyone enjoyed. Great selections of drinks at the bar. All the booking and interaction with the managers was easy and friendly. Would highly recommend.

We've had multiple staff parties here and they have all been fabulous. Great organisation prior to the event, helpful and friendly staff to host during the event. Would recommend for both private events and personal visits!

My wife and two of her friends held a joint birthday party on 1st Floor of Varsity on September 7th. It was fantastic; location, atmosphere and service were all excellent. Everyone at Varsity was as friendly and helpful in the run up to the event as they were on the night. The band I am in played live at the venue and the sound was great - thanks to an excellent and easy to use PA system. So huge thanks to Alex and the team at Varsity

We recently hired the Club Floor Room for a company celebration. We had 65 people standing and could fit in 2 casino tables and a photo booth comfortably. The service was top class. We were assigned a manager and two bar staff who smoothly managed the drinks requests while supporting us to move through our agenda. Excellent and we'll book again.

Hosted a group of about 30 people here two years in a row and both times it was amazing. We’ve gone in August both times which is an extremely busy time in Oxford. The Varsity Club group was absolutely exceptional with planning and service. All of the staff are extremely friendly, welcoming and overall just want you to have a great time. Cocktails are amazing and food is delicious. If you plan on hosting a group or even visiting Oxford, Varsity Club is a must. They have a rooftop section with beautiful views of the city. Highly recommend!

The venue had a classy atmosphere, and the staff, particularly Natasha, were extremely nice and helpful.

I had a wonderful experience at varsity club . I highly recommend Natasha for her exceptional service. She was attentive, professional, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. Natasha truly deserves recognition for her outstanding customer care!

The food was actually pretty good. Most of the staff were very nice. The music was good. There's only one thing... The toilets are not very accessible. I do like the terrace view. It's definitely worth the cardio all the way up!

We had an absolutely great experience hosting our company Summer BBQ here. Food was particularly good and Sukanya, our party planner, was an absolute pleasure to deal with. DJ wasn't great but wasn't expensive.

Terrible service. Was told that wait was up to 30 minutes. Was only offered a table one hour later - despite there being multiple available tables on the rooftop.

Great location to have drinks with friends visiting Oxford. It's worth trying their summer Spritz, Mai Tai, Mojito or their G&T :-)

Didn’t try the food as the kitchen was open when we got there. Lots of stairs! Be warned! Only one staff member on when we got there he was very welcoming and attentive. Loved soaking up the sun and looking over the beautiful city of Oxford.

Went here for the first time the other day after having wanted to explore more of the pubs/bars in Oxford. Our server Phoebe was particularly lovely and our experience in general was also really high, very nice drinks and a great view of Oxford as well. Would recommend!

I have been there twice, their rooftop terrace is great, beautiful view of Oxford. Both time their food and service were disappointing, unfortunately. Last time, few days ago, it was very busy, the service was slow and getting the drink right was also a challenge. It has potential to improve.

Perfect place to be for sunset watching in summer, it was fabulous.

We booked a table for 2 and we have got a table straight away on the roof terrace where we just booked. A white shirt gentlemen very politletly told us we can just choose which ever table we want and there is a table service. We did and we was waiting for 25 min. There was quite few staff 2 girl o e blondiesh and ond black hair waitress going around 2x in this amount of time. We couldn't order anything online true the qr code it was stopped. The 2 eaitress only took 2 orders and not even have a look around who else want to order anything. And after those 2 orders they just disappeared and was waiting by the bar and drinking chatting which would be ok if everyone would have their orders ongoing. I belive nobody told them there is a new table, the management wasnt around and it was really not managed or any sections anything. We decided after this almost half an hour to leave without any order take even i was was waveing when i saw they looki g around. I am really not a person who write a bad review but the whole place was beautiful and we really wanted to stay there because of the place and weather. I went really unhappy.. and nobody even noticed when we were leaving.

Beautiful location and view, but it all falls apart when there's no one to take an order or do the service. No Gould at the waitress who were working, but we're booked a table and came just a bit early, been told where's no online ordering only table service, after waiting for more than 25 min decided to leave as nobody neither approached our table not showed any interest doing so. Would be understandable if place was packet but it was half empty.

Great experience. The staff were incredible. The venue was amazing. The food and drinks were 10/10. Special shout outs to Max, Sarah, Natasha, Diren, Chanté and Marcus. The manager sorted us out and the staff were very accommodating. They checked in on us regularly and the security was top tier. Great place to host a private party.

Right from the beginning when I was planning a surprise birthday gathering the staff were so helpful. Quick to reply and happy to help. I booked the VIP rooftop terrace and we pre ordered food. On the day it was perfect. Sun was shining with a slight down pour but the pod was perfect for us to shelter inside. Staff were extremely friendly, very efficient and helpful. Food was lovely and well cooked. I would recommend the Varsity Club fof any celebration, has picturesque views across the rooftops. Thank you for being so hospitable Heather from Evesham

I’m sad to say I had a disappointing experience here. While ordering a burger the waitress asked if we wanted chips and ketchup and mayo without telling us how much extra it cost. When I asked about the extra charge for ketchup and mayo I was told twice “didn’t you see that on the menu?”. This is very poor service and I shouldn’t be made to feel stupid. Please remind your customers in case they didn’t see the full menu that it costs extra. No place I have ever been in has charged me two pounds for condiments. Also, my small bottle of sparkling water cost a total of 6 pounds, 5.50 for the water and a 50 cent service charge. Then when we asked to pay and split the bill, I was told we either both pay cash or both card, no separate forms of payment. Please run your business better than this. I won’t be back.

Huge potential but seemed like only one staff member so there’s no table service. The location is amazing and the rooftop has a good view while you drink.

We had a wonderful ‘significant’ birthday party here. The staff looked after us well, helping to plan the event weeks ahead, and had everything ready on the day, always friendly and happy to help. Our friends and family had a great time, enjoying the cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages on offer. We got outside catering in which was no problem to coordinate with Varsity. Great place to hold a party.

I am not one to post a negative review - spurred on however by a very disappointing visit this afternoon to The Varsity Club, during a special family occasion. Poor staff experience. Poorly trained host. Arrived at 3.30pm, we were advised of an approximate 30 minute wait for a rooftop table for an advised group of 6, many thanks perfect. At 60 minutes however, we enquired again and were told we were an awkward sized group but were doing best to arrange. At 90 minutes, we enquired again to be told we would not be accommodated at all or at least for another hour. Very frustrated as we had purchased an expensive round of drinks for our group at this stage, sitting patiently waiting opposite the host, whilst other smaller groups passed ahead of us. Had we been advised initially that there was no chance, we would have gone elsewhere as we were seeking fresh air in the first place. Honestly negativity impacted an otherwise celebratory day. The host was unpleasant in how he communicated with us an hour and a half after waiting. We left at this point, slightly incredulous but seriously unimpressed.

Not organised at all. You need better organising system. If you can’t manage this many people then limit walk in customer or higher more staff or apply No-show fee. We visited on Saturday evening, we wanted to go to the roof top. The staff told us we can wait downstairs and the table will be available within an hour to an hour and half. They said they will text us when the table is available. We sat downstairs for two hours with several drinks and noticed something went wrong. We came to the staff and asked where we are on the list and we found we are not on the waiting list anymore. They turned us back to our sit and we were waiting for another 20 minutes. We came to the staff and asked again and they finally set the table upstairs for us. We wasted entire of our evening and didn’t see the view because it turned dark when we got upstairs. None of staff realised they messed up until we talk to the manager. They kept saying sometime people didn’t turn up even they booked and they had a busy day so it happened. However, it can’t be an excuse and you should take your responsibility for all customers and take action to figure out how you will prevent this happen again. So unprofessional and disappointed.

Great Experience. Went there yesterday for some drinks in the evening . We were asked to wait for 20 - 40 mins and got a lovely table within 20-25 min. The view was exceptional and the drinks were amazing . The staff was sweet and very polite. Would highly recommend this place if you are in Oxford.

I hired the level 2 room for a cocktail 21st party. The staff were very helpful and dealt with all my requirements very quickly. The bar was not too overpriced and I would definitely return again

TL;DR - drinks were great, bar staff may not treat you well if you’re not a single woman My partner and I came here a few days ago because we heard it was a great place to grab a drink. And the drinks themselves were great! But that’s about all that was good. The bar staff were extremely cold to us, which soured our experience. It was weird because the two ladies ahead of us in line received extremely good service. As soon as they left, the bartenders pointedly ignored us and we had to call them a few times just to order. When they finally did acknowledge our presence, they made our drinks angrily and in silence. But then another lady came behind us in line, so before we even finished paying, their demeanor changed again and they cheerfully asked her what she would like. I’m not sure what we did to upset them, but I don’t think it’s cool to treat some customers well and others like they’re not worthy of your establishment, especially when you charge a mandatory 10% service fee. I hope other patrons have a better experience.

Had my 40th birthday party here and staff, managers and DJ were all excellent. They went through what would happen on the day with me and were faultless with everything they had promised. Sukanya was great during the lead up explaining what would happen. She was on annual leave during the event but relayed all the information to the manager. We had Markus on the day and he was really good at quickly and promptly getting things I needed. I would highly recommend them for any birthday/wedding event!

That place was incredible. It's like a labyrinth. What an incredible piece of architecture. Staff were top notch. It was my friends birthday and it was a treat for him. We had a great time. The prices are reasonable but you should know that they run deals on drinks. It was buy one get one free for cocktails and the price was 12 quid (6 quid a drink). So when it came to buying drinks, as someone who normally spends around 9 quid a drink for a cocktail or wine, plus a beer or cider for who ever I'm with (that's what most my friends drink) the total cost was slightly cheaper at the varsity club in total so that was good. It wasn't extreme and I think you really get the moneys worth when it comes to atmosphere/architectural layout. The place is incredible. First time I went there or even knew it existed after being in the oxford area for around 15 years so it was a nice surprise to go there. Roof terrace was the highlight. Beautiful views across the cities medieval skyline. I think it would be ridiculous to know the place existed and not visit it. I would definitely recommend it

I held my 21st here and I’m glad I did celebrate it here! I hired out the 2nd club floor for me and about 50 of my mates and to be honest these guys were on top of everything; from the quick replies to the setting up. Sukanya, the events organiser, was on top of the replies and quick to answer any queries. Bryn, I believe who was the shift manager for that night was accommodating and helpful meeting our requirements and even more! The bar staff that night, although I didn’t get their names, they were quick and super friendly to talk to. The DJ, Bobby, was also great, he read the room and he knew how to mix and when to play what song! But overall I reckon anyone who’s thinking of celebrating a special occasion, should definitely give these guys a message. Thanks for the memories guys!

Great venue for a Christmas Party, had our own area with disco and bar. The space was great, music had us all dancing and the bar staff were incredible.

We had booked a table for 8 on the terrace. Views are very nice. However, throughout the venue there is a pungent/damp smell. Quite off putting actually. The benches we sat on were heated which was a nice touch. However, service was not good. It seemed staff congregated around the bar instead of walking around checking who needs more drinks. We had to get up, after waiting patiently, to get some attention. I had read other reviews before booking about the bad service and was hoping it was a one-off. Looks like management need to sort things out as I won't be back.

Really lovely bar with a nice rooftop view and good cocktails. It’ll might be a challenge to climb all those stairs to reach it but it’ll be worth it.

Absolutely brilliant! We recently hired the party room at the Varsity Club for my wife's birthday (about 60 people) and we had a truly wonderful evening - loads and loads of dancing and celebrating! The Manager, the Supervisor for the evening, the brilliant DJ, the bar staff, the kitchen staff and everybody else went out of their way to make it an absolutely special event. Every little need was catered for including some great food from the kitchen and storage of a surprise birthday cake that was walked out onto the dance floor - superb! We can't thank the Varsity Club enough, highly recommended!

Got some cocktails with some good views that you can't get elsewhere. The Strawberry G&T was fruity and just right for me.

Ellie Robinson is amazing, such a good lead server, deserves a pay rise for making me feel like I am her mate, spent too much money because of her, deserves commission. Intended to spend £50 ended up spending £250 because of her, good saturday night if you ask me.

Booked a table for which you have a designated time slot. Drinks took 30 minutes to arrive & we were one short. By the time the missing drink arrived, the rest of the party had finished. Waiting staff were nochulent. Place lacked atmosphere & service charge was added, even though we were not happy with the standard of service.

We had cocktails on the roof terrace which was great. Roof terrace was full (hot weather) but the bar room one floor down was virtually empty with air con for those that wanted a cooler, quieter environment.

Best place in Oxford for amazing views of the towers and steeples. Worth booking a table outside if it's busy. There's alotnof stairs for those who would struggle so worth noting.

The bar staff seem to respect the sex of the person rather than the order of the queue. My friends and I were waiting a long time whilst others got served before us. Cocktails were served in boiling glasses with what seemed like no regard for the customer.

We only had drinks here. Great venue for roof top views but just not enough staff to serve. They were friendly but had to get their attention. Reason price and worth going there for the views.

Be warned, you can’t order sort of cocktails from the roof upstairs! That’s a shame for a cocktail bar. We waited our table in the roof for an hour. We consumed downstairs and that was fine. When we finally got there we asked for 5 CAMPARI SPRITZ, a regular cocktail (Campari and Prosecco) that we already had while waiting downstairs. They don’t serve Campari spritz upstairs and we should have gone to collect that at the bar downstairs. Hard to believe. I mean, you hire more staff and they make the cocktails wherever they want. You cannot ask your clients to book for a waiter table and at the same time asked them to make waitress jobs. The worst was the waitress reply “I’M BUSY” to the simply question “why wouldn’t you order them from downstairs?” Indecent and unprofessional.
