best chippy in Devon , lived here 24 years and tried a lot. the holy trinity ; amazing food, very reasonable prices and truly great staff . the usual plaice has got it all and does the best mushy pea fritter on planet earth.

Ordered food for 6 people. 3 people had burgers & chips. 2 of them were with no cheese & confirmed this with the server. Drove back to sons house who we were visiting & paying for dinner & found that all burgers had cheese in. Chips were basically cold & tasted like they had been cooked the day before then recooked. Son rang to inform them of mistake & that they couldn't be eaten as 2 people were lactose intolerant. Person on phone told us to just take the cheese out & scrape the bun etc. After several attempts at trying to explain we were offered 2 burgers. Drove back to collect. By the time the remaining 2 people had their food the chips were freezing & what should've been a nice visit turned into a everyone fed up of waiting around & the evening ruined. The person on the phone had no idea about food intolerance & needed training in this as well as in customer care. We definately won't be eating here again & felt it was a waste of money. Haven't ever given a bad review before but felt they needed to see that negative service leads to negative feedback.

The best fish and chips! Consistently excellent every time and I've been a regular customer for around six years. I've recommended The Usual Plaice to many friends over the years and they are in total agreement with me. I always buy takeaways, but one of my friends who is elderly and no longer drives, really appreciates the friendly and very reasonable delivery service.

Popped in with grandad, and our girls, for lunch. Friendly welcome, comfortable lil seating area, to enjoy our food. I enjoyed poached cod, freshly prepared along with the best tartar sauce. Our young lady enjoyed chicken nuggets, not just any frozen version here, juicy chicken breast, and the best chips ever. A most delicious lunch indeed.

Left an accurate review on Google reviews about his burnt chips. Owner responded by calling me a liar and telling me to take his chips back. Looked burnt and tasted burnt and no, I'm not driving back in wild weather to return your burnt chips!

Said last time I went here, that I'd never go back. This time I only got a bag of chips. How hard can that be? Totally burnt and inedible. This used to be a good chippy long time ago but the only thing consistent now, is how bad it is

Always the first place to visit when going football. Staff are very friendly and polite. One of if not the best fish and chips ive had and the christmas pigs in blankets with batter are to die for. Highly recommended for a visit.

Had fish and chips several times now. I favour the steamed fish, but my husband likes his battered. The batter is light and tasty, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Portions are good, and everything is cooked freshly. Wouldn’t go anywhere else now. Haven’t tried eating ‘in’ yet, but I’m sure it would be just as good.

Hubby really wanted to go here after not enjoying a previous place. We only travel to Torquay once a year and a chippy is a must for my hubby. We were able to eat in at a very small extra charge. The didn’t mind that we were sharing. I had had a big breakfast in The 25, cake and ice cream so was stuffed. They asked if we wanted the fish cut up to share and I said it was fine I don’t really eat fish . I tried some and omg it was lush as they say in Wales. Perfectly cooked and batter amazing. So welcoming. Definitely will go back. The only sad thing is we live so far away

Decent sized cod fillets cooked well with light batter. Good portion of chips.

Twice now in a row when I’ve collected my order, I got home to find items missing. The first time it happened, I called and the staff member was lovely, got the missing items out to me straight away and they even gave us some extra chips as an apology. This time? I called and they asked did I want a freebie on my next order, I said no I wanted the missing items. Then they asked if I could come back for it, I said could they send it out instead. An hour later it still hadn’t arrived, and I spent 30 mins trying to call but no-one answered. By this point they had closed, and they never turned up. Absolutely disgraceful customer service

Chips were absolutely vile! undercooked and greasy as hell, as someone said previously very strange aftertaste to them. Worst chippy I've ever had won't be going back again

Once again went here before the football, as expected the service was second to none pleasant and polite. After a close season break a return for lunch once again left us with a satisfying glow as the food was one of if not the best we have tasted and we have visited numerous eateries on our travels. The Usual Plaice is well worth a visit and is highly recommended.

Plymouth Argyle normally plays Torquay United in a friendly every year and this place is a 5-minute walk from the football stadium (Plainmoor). This is my second time at this chippy; I came to it last year and it was great so we decided to go again this year. I came in with my family (My dad and two cousins). My dad ordered small fish and chips. I ordered the homemade fishcake (smoked haddock version) and small chips. My cousin ordered chicken nuggets and chips and my other cousin got a large sausage with chips. The chips are unreal! Great size, and tastes so good like proper chippy chips. My homemade fishcake was great, full of flavour. The chicken nuggets are proper chicken like amazing chicken balls. The fish tasted fresh and perfect. To top it off the curry sauce is lovely, one of the best. Portion sizes were perfect and it is great that you can sit and eat inside the chip shop. The customer service was super, very helpful asking how our food was and always there to help. Hopefully, we have another friendly next season as I will be coming back!

We've always had amazing chips from here. We treat ourselves to the Usual Plaice when family are over and it's always well received. Tonight, my mother and father ate from here for the first time and couldn't stop complementing how tasty it all was. My father said it was way better than Harry Ramsdens! They had chips and roe. The lovely lady gave us a portion of mushy peas as it was the last one of the evening. All absolutely beautiful. Great food and great friendly service here. We never try another fish and chip shop when we can rely on fantastic quality each time here.

Amazing find. We were in the area visiting family and really wanted a fish and chip lunch. We found the restaurant on Google and could not have been more delighted. The service was second to none, food was great and they even welcomed our two dogs into the restaurant. Would go back any time we are in the area

Chip are so expensive and have a funny aftertaste. Gravy is really runny and tastes like rubbish gravy granules (the worst gravy I've ever had).

Totally amazed about how well, the food was cooked and taking care of, packaged and delivered still crunchy piping hot. The portions were also very generous. Overall best chip shop experience I’ve had yet.

Visited tonight as was staying at the parkdean resort nearby.tried Paul's plaice chippy once as was nearer...vile,disgusting chips so tried this and what a delight.friendly from the word off,gave my 6 year old some sweets while we waited.very reasonably prices.£6 something for a cod! well that's way cheaper than my rip off southern England.As they were nearing closing they said did I want anything free like more sausages.i couldn't turn it down.Fantastic place if you want brilliant food,a friendly face and good value.Thanks for a brilliant meal.Michael

Had to wait ages for food. Standing room only due to the 4 chairs being occupied. Staff were polite enough and friendly but unprofessional. Hair unkempt, no aprons, one staff member wearing slippers. Food was nice enough but wouldnt rush back.

Good quality food at a reasonable price served by friendly staff

Heard good things about this chippy so while staying in Torquay over the weekend we took our chance and had tea delivered, even though there was another chippy just by us! Fish, chips, cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, mushy peas and curry sauce later we were stuffed and happy as such great quality and value for money, you won't be disappointed. From placing order with one lovely lady to the meal being delivered by another lovely lady, it was a pleasant experience from start to finish :D The only advice we would give is to order lunch time for evening delivery as so popular.

We get our fish and chips delivered by Lisa who is a smashing lady. Very friendly she always has time to have a chat. She delivers the fish and chips with a lovely smile. The quality of the fish is superb. I would recommend them all the time.

Best takeaway in Torquay! The staff are so friendly and the service is fast and so easy to phone up and order delivery. The food arrives quickly and by a lovely driver, we are so grateful we could order from here while we were on holiday 2 nights in a row! This has to be the best chippy in the area. I like to think I’ve been to most of the chippies in Torquay and this is seriously the best. The batter is the crispiest. The chips are the largest. The curry sauce is the best I’ve ever had. My personal recommendation would be the smoked haddock fish cake! As far as fish and chips go, you won’t find better! Well done guys. I’ll be back again next week :-)

Holidaying locally in an appartment, take-away fish & chips are a must. Can highly recommend the haddock and chips, freshly cooked to order, and the smoked haddock fishcake and chips. Beautifully cooked chunky chips which were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. Clearly using clean oil and taking pride in their produce. Mushy peas were a little too pureed for my taste but the curry sauce was delicious. Would have had take-away every night if we hadn't already made plans elsewhere. Great to see as much recyclable packaging used as possible. Top quality local chippy!

Since lockdown I have had takeaway instead of eating in. It is always so tasty so much choice. Nothing is too much trouble They are very friendly and efficient. It is my absolute favourite chippie. Definitely 5 stars.
