I have to say it was one of the best lunches I've had. The menu choice was very good, it was cooked to perfection, the sevice was great and the portions were more than ample. I couldn't fault it and we eat out quite a bit. Will definately be going back soon.

Having visited the unicorn in the past for a Sunday roast I would say the food was acceptable,today however our visited today was not a pleasant one my wife had a Turkey roast & I had a lamb roast the Yorkshire pudding were like cardboard the lamb was dry and bland this was also the case with the wife’s Turkey roast everything presented was not seasoned the roast potatoes were rock hard,it appeared the the food had been kept warm under heat lamps thus the dryness of everything, I doubt that a return will be a long way off.

We came for Sunday lunch for our Wedding Anniversary. We opted for the small portion to hopefully have a sweet as well. (12.50). The meal came promptly and was ample. Roast beef, Yorkshire pud, mash and roast potatoes and gravy. Side dish of peas and carrots, dauphinois potatoes and cheesy broccoli and cauliflower, fantastic! So tasty and well cooked. We did have just enough room for a sweet, I had the Eton mess sundae, hubby had triple choc cookie sandwich, both lovely. The staff were lovely friendly and attentive. Highly recommended

I totally agree with previous reviews. We were looking for a suitable place to eat after taking my older parent for some local shopping. Also to celebrate a birthday. We tried a place nearer Atherstone which actually turned us away as they had stopped cooking food at that point??? We moved on to the Unicorn. Its a lovely clean and welcoming pub inside and out. The young lady wh served us when we arrived was so helpful and pleasant. We ordered food and it was absolutely delicious. The Shropshire pork and also a Prawn curry. A real pleasure especially when you are hungry. Mom was thrilled as she wanted to treat us and it did. We live in Shropshire and when we visit Mom or friends are always looking for a good food venue. So thankyou everyone at The Unicorn for making our day a real joy and pleasure. We look forward to coming again. Worth the travelling. Other venues could learn a lesson here.

Have been a customer of the Unicorn for 30 years. Today had to be the worst meal i have ever been served. Despite an empty dining room the service was no existent. The meal was cold and poor quality. It will be my last visit, not sure what has happened there.

Came for a roast and we were not disappointed! Roast beef with roast & mashed potatoes. Then we got carrots & peas, potato gratin AND cauliflower cheese. Winning! Puds were nice too but sad there was no crumble!

First ever visit here as we’ve just moved into the area. Lovely range of drinks and very friendly staff and the place was incredibly clean. We had the lunch menu for a different items and every single item was piping hot and really tasty. Will definitely visit again.

Called in on the off chance for a meal Monday afternoon. Menu looked impressive. Ordered food from “specials board” Jerk Chicken had no flavour at all let alone heat! Moussaka had not much filling & just swimming in cheese sauce-Greek salad had nothing Greek about it. Just a very disappointing meal all in all. Pub was rly nice & staff efficient.

There are so many good things about the Unicorn, and we used to come here many years ago. The problem is that although the pub itself has been updated and the bar offering is fantastic, the food has remained in the 80s. The quality of the food is also lacking. The steak was livery, gammon thin and full of oil, and vegetarian options were limited. It's a missed opportunity to offer a true gastro experience focusing on good quality, locally sourced food. With so many farms nearby, I really think they are not doing the local area any justice.

Aldi ping and ding for £15 yes your know you choose it’s a great place been refurbished really nice. It needs a great chief doing great food. I can see what there looking for numbers quick turn off over which in turn give you poor service and most of all poor quality food once is enough. I also felt sorry for the old guy sitting in a little booth on his own in the bar area !!! A bar area is for drinking and chatting and not for putting more tables in to screw more people never again more places around better quality for the same money GOODBYE !!

Checked into restaurant by a young lady, ordered drinks, no interest in us at all. Told the table number, and waited ,wasn't told we had to order at the bar. Eventually we ordered, the food came within minutes. The dishes were scalding hot,been under a light I suspect. Sausage cheap,veg had no taste. The roasters had been fried in fat fryer and tasted awful,was dirty fat I think. Paid bill and left. Had booked for boxing day,but cancelled it. This place needs a new chef and some serious staff training.. Would definitely not recommend.

Excellent lunch time menu. Dishes that are filling but won’t break the bank. We had the all day breakfast at £8.75 they also do soup and sandwich for £7.95 plus many other dishes. This menu available mid-week lunchtimes . Judging by the amount of people in the pub, it is proving very popular.

The Unicorn came highly recommended by a friend so I booked a table for Sunday at 6.30 in the restaurant. When we arrived there were more staff than customers. The staff appeared to be more interested in their conversation than the service. We were told to sit wherever we liked because there was no one in the restaurant. We took a seat in the bar area and checked out the menu. I had to go back to the bar ( and wait to be served again) and order drinks and food. Whilst the food was very good when it came, the service left a lot to be desired and maybe some customer service training is needed. Nobody asked if our meal was ok or offered desserts when collecting our plates. It was just before 8pm when we left as the staff were clearly waiting for us to pay and leave. The bill was loaded on the till and the bartender waiting with the amount already on the card machine when we went to the bar. I was under the impression that they were open until 11pm? Having worked in hospitality and it’s not rocket science that the fewer the customers the better the service should be! This has put me off returning to the Unicorn which is probably unfair as we could not fault the food.

Large party of 18 , for a 65th birthday. Second visit too the Unicorn and not disappointed. Food was excellent, First class . Service was fantastic by the young waiters and waitresses. Bar staff very polite and friendly . Definitely return.

Absolutely 5stars. We were quite apprehensive having read some of the reviews…but we needn’t have worried. The staff were incredibly friendly, polite and hospitable, the place looked great and the food was outstanding. The crispy pork belly…to die for, and the sizzling sea bass was just a dream. We were the last to leave the pub, but no one hassled us to go, and throughout we felt incredibly comfortable. We will certainly visit again. Thanks you everyone for a cracking evening.

Went for a family meal to celebrate recieving good news about recent health scare . Ordered drinks and selected a table , nice furnishings , clean was impressed . Ordered staters and main meals from the bar and sat awaiting starters . None arrived . The waitress then bought out the mains , I explained that we hadn't had our starters that were ordered . The mains were taken back . The waitress came back and apologised " sorry the lad hasn't put it through the till correctly" . Ok sometimes these things happen so we agreed forget the starters as the main meals were already done . Two of the main meals were bought back out , they looked delicious , the third meal bought out was one of the starters . I explained that due to their error we were skipping starters and we had already got two of the main meals , the waitress proceeded to take it back and bring out the third main meal . We were more than happy with this , but we were then asked if we wanted the other starter . We ate our meals paid and left , Normally in other eateries we are asked if everything was ok , on this occasion it wasn't the case . . At the time we were there the place only had about 3 tables to serve . Will they be able to cope with more customers . Shame really the meals we had were tasty and plentiful , appalling service let you down

e have been on two previous occasions and never failed to be treated in the most fiendly manner, served food that was geat and the general ambience of the place is very good. Very clean and in a lovely village location

Went for family meal. Ordered roast beef with fluffy Yorkshire pudding etc, got very thin roast beef like what you get in the fridge at the supermarket, roast potatoes were definitely not homemade and rock hard and the Yorkshire pudding was definitely not light and fluffy more like a flat pancake.

I was astonished when I read some if the bad reviews about this pub.My husband and I have been coming here for many years and have always enjoyed our food and the service here.I can only comment on the staff that are working on the particular days that we visit but we find Emmaline ( apologies if I have spelt this wrong),Paige and Jack are always helpful and friendly and give good service.It is mainly lunchtimes we come here and usually choose something from the light bites menu which gives a decent choice at a reasonable price.The portions you are served are a good size too.We have had several family ‘get togethers’ here and no one has ever been disappointed.We also came here for the last 2 years for Christmas Day lunch.We couldn’t fault it, the food was good and it was so well organised the service was excellent and even included a visit from Santa which made it extra special.I look forward to visiting for lunch again next week.Thank you to all the staff at the unicorn for making our visits enjoyable.

Went to this pub after an absence and was surprised by the new menu, but not in a good way. All the old favourites that once was is no more. No more traditional pub classics like Sausage & Mash, Steak & Ale pie and much more. The other thing is the prices have shot through the roof. The pub has had a full revamp which is nice but now lacks a bit of greenary which is a shame. My partner and i used to love this country pub and go regular, but after today it is unlikely we will go back. I dont understand why it is that once good pubs have been upgraded the menu has to too. Al lacarte is not for a country pub. You should also maybe think about the people who like the old classic meals instead of all this posh nosh your dishing out. 🙁 very disappointed is an understatement.

My partner booked 15 of us for my 50th Birthday meal on 27th January. Everything went to plan & the waiting staff did not rush any of us into ordering our meals. Our tables was was checked often for drink refills which was good service. All the starters arrived together & the kitchen team did a great job getting all the mains out together & they all arrived piping hot. All of our party commented on how big the portions was & all the meals was tasty. None of us could manage a dessert so we just had a nice coffee to finish the evening. Thanks again for treating us so well & we will look forward to dining here again soon.

Always on the look out for new places to go - and a friend mentioned this place so thought we would have a look. We always go for a drink and a look/see of place/facilities, and to observe the ambience before booking a table. They advertise 'Fine Wines' but their perception of this at the bar is Jack Rabbit & Blossom Hill - checking the Restaurant Wine Menu, bottles were simply unnamed Pinot, Chardonnay of Sauvignon - in other words whatever the local C&C has on offer - cheap! Restaurant layout was very school canteeny and prices looked expensive. Ambience was non existent and staff were surly. Needless to say, wont be added to our list of places to go.

hi we booked a table for two for one o clock and arrived at 12 55! we went to the bar area after using the hand sanitiser in the entrance hallway,the lady behind the bar said we could dine in the restaurant if we wanted but as there was no one else in there we opted for the bar area! the bar area has been refirbished to a nice standard and was quite welcoming! i went to the bar and ordered drinks a diet coke and pint of marstons pedigree. the pedigree was fine and tasted well kept unlike the diet coke which was flat and had a funny taste to it! i returned to the bar and asked the lady to change the coke which she did without a problem. i had the surf and turf with a pepper corn sauce and coleslaw which came to £20-15 the steak which was rump was very tough and hard to chew! my wife had the new york pizza which at best was warm on arrival to the table! also the inside of the meatballs was cold!! to round it off after spending £40-65 on two meals and three drinks i don"t think we will return because ii don"t think the meal was upto par! the sad fact is its our wedding anniversary today and we wanted to go somewhere different for a change but sadly won"t be making a second visit!! my wife did"nt want to complain as not to tarnish our day! we did leave the lady behind the bar a tip because she did"nt cook our food and did her job in a good manner! when your price"s are towards the topend everyting should be tiptop even down to your diet coke which can"t be that hard to get right!!

We are a group of up to 12 friends who have been regular customers of the Unicorn virtually every week for about the last 8 years. We love the place as they have always been very accommodating and the food is good quality pub grub at a fair price. We arrived this week for the first time since reopening after lockdown and I called ahead to ensure that we could be accommodated as usual with regard to COVID procedures. Upon arrival and after ordering drinks in the bar, we proceeded to the restaurant to our ‘regular’ table. There was a couple eating on an adjacent table and to maintain social distancing we were asked by a waitress to move to another table which we did immediately. We were all seated and making our choices from the menus when the landlady appeared from the kitchen area. Despite being seated at the table by one of the waitresses, the landlady was clearly very upset by our presence. I can only describe her attitude as angry, very rude and aggressive. We were genuinely confused as to what had upset her or what we had done wrong. Despite us politely asking what she would like us to do, her anger and rage towards us was something we simply could not tolerate and so we decided to leave. We have been regular weekly customers for the past 8 years, often being the only customers in the restaurant. We estimate that we have probably spent about £50,000 at the Unicorn during that time and to be treated in this way by a landlady who we have never seen there before is utterly disgusting and totally unacceptable. We have already made alternative arrangements for our weekly get together at an establishment who seem to be genuinely grateful for our business.

This was the first time we had visited this Inn. We went there for lunch and to meet up with some family members. The venue is pleasant with plenty of parking and access is all on one level. We were welcomed and given a choice of table. The menu is extensive and includes many ‘pub’ favourites. The staff were pleasant and knowledgeable. They will be having a refurbished in the near future so it will be interesting to return. We would recommend all the dishes we had - pâté, fish cocktail, steak, gammon, all day breakfast and the classic burger.

Not much to say, just thank you once again for four tremendous meals with friendly and efficient service. Have never found anything to fault this lovely, traditional, country pub. See you soon!

My family and I ate here again at the weekend, certainly our local choice, we eat here about twice per month, always great food, loads of menu options, great size portions and great service, what more can I ask!

The pub was quite busy for a Saturday afternoon, seating was ample in the restaurant area but not too much available in the pub part. At first we sat in the restaurant but it was too cold due to what looked like no heating, a big open room and noone else in there. We ended up moving the to pub section once a table opened up. Our waitress was friendly and efficient in taking our order but I think if you sit in the pub section then you order at the bar. Food was relatively quick in arriving. It was good quality and enjoyed by us all. The only reason I've marked them down one star is because they have no WiFi. Being in the middle of nowhere meant that all 4 of us had absolutely no phone signal so I would have expected WiFi to have been available when pretty much every other pub and restaurant does.

I cannot fault the food and service we received at the Unicorn. The staff were friendly, food served promptly and the portions were a good size. We will definitely be returning.

I dont write reviews but food here was spot on. Decent portions quality taste Bar staff blonde girl friendly. Good staff and good food.Will come back.

16 of our Austrey Archery Group went for a christmas meal and social. The food was really tasty with a wide range to suit all. Serving 16 people with hot food at same time is no mean feat. My fish cake starter, venison pie main and cheese cake desert were amazing. The service was very friendly and efficient. Our only issue was the portions were so large we couldnt eat it all...but you can take it home.We have already decided we will go there again and wouldnt hesitate to recommend The Unicorn

Decided to go for Sunday lunch with family. food was lovely and well worth the money and portions was big . I would recommend a visit staff was also friendly .

Love this place !! The food is freshly cooked and delicious with plenty of choices from either the main menu or midweek menu and there’s also a specials wall !! Staff are always friendly and nothing is too much . Great place for all occasions.

Been here a good few times in the past with family and has been ok, but this time not so good, starters need to be better and brought up to date in presentation . Main course was ok, beef seems to be pre cooked and heated in gravy, veg was not drained properly,served in water the cake pudding was still frozen when served,.
