The Unicorn Hotel Restaurant in Powys

Had a lovely carvery meal on Sunday with my parents/ family. Mum was in a wheelchair, and they were very accommodating. The carvery was very tasty & thoroughly enjoyed . Very lovely blueberry cheesecake. Been many times and their cheesecake have been different types and have always been wonderful . Fantastic couple run it Phil & Cath very welcoming. Staff are always polite & courteous. Would recommend

What a lovely place! From the moment I messaged to book a table a few days ago their customer service was spot on. Arriving today for Sunday lunch just cemented it. Great customer service, lovely friendly staff, super food (we had a carvery) and excellent value for money. I’m sad we are just visiting and this is not our local!! Sorry no pictures of lunch but couldn’t wait to dive in…

Had an excellent carvery on Sunday dinner time.Lots of choices and very fresh.Service was prompt and owners were hard working and friendly. The food prices were reasonable and the puddings were definitely worth having👍🏼

The first time I came it was really nice, great food but the last time I came with my partner for drinks was just uncomfortable. I was waiting at the bar for quite a bar, which is fine, other people were before me, but a family arrived while I was waiting to be served which were then served next so I had to wait even longer, and it wasn’t like the bar staff hadn’t seen me waiting but whatever. When I was finally being served I asked if they had a certain type of lager on tap, I wasn’t sure since I couldn’t see round the whole bar, the staff member pulled a weird, strained face and dramatically raised her shoulders. It was a very bizzare response and I didn’t know how to react, I just asked for something different that I could see they had. She was very short and abrupt with me, made me feel like I’d done something wrong but I wouldn’t have a clue what. Haven’t been back since and probably not going to.

The Unicorn never fails to deliver delicious proper home cooked food. We were a party of 12. Bar staff are friendly with a great selection of wines beers etc. Menu has something for everyone. Food was served all together so no one was left waiting . Nice quality and nice and hot. Fab home cooked chips which is a rare thing to be served these days. I have eaten here many times whilst staying at Maesmawr Farm resort. Thank you to every member er of the team

Great Sunday Carvery - Dog friendly in Bar or outside, good selection of veg and choice of 3 meats. Definitely on our list for a return visit. Booking advised as gets busy and heard at least 3 groups told no tables available while we were there.

Whilst working the weekend in a nearby town, my company had booked me into a hotel in Newtown, which was absolutely atrocious - dangerous in fact, meaning my partner and I couldn’t stay the night and had nowhere else to go. This is when the Unicorn became apparent to us - we had rang round local hotels and B&B’s at 7pm on the night we need a room for asking for available rooms. A local hotel had recommended the unicorn to us - a phone call to Kath was made explaining our situation. Kath was very friendly and explained to us that there were no rooms ready to be available, as the only empty room had been vacated only a few hours before - the professional cleaner wasn’t due until the next day. However, as Kath and Phil were aware of the hotel we had originally been booked into, they knew of our distress and offered to help us out by taking their time away from managing the busy Saturday night restaurant and cleaning and making up the spare room themselves, at gone 8pm. Kath also told us she had turned other people who were ringing late for a room away, but understood our desperate need for a room. We arrived at the unicorn to find the loveliest, cosiest village restaurant and hotel. After a long day of working what we needed was a nice relaxing place to be and the unicorn certainly did the job. We sat down in the restaurant for dinner which we hadn’t had yet and ordered the stack burger and lasagne. It was TO DIE FOR. Portion sizes were generous and the taste was out of this world. I particularly recommend anything with Phil’s homemade sauce on as it is one of the best tastes I’ve ever experienced. We were then guided to our room - by chance, the biggest room of the hotel. It was absolutely amazing. It truly felt like a home from home, with the decor giving this romantic, cosy feel to the place. The bathroom was immaculate and also on offer was a smart TV and a mini fridge with local produce milk and bottled water, complimentary. The room was very clean, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Despite having a stressful evening we actually had a very good sleep thanks to the comfort of the bed. To make the hotel even more homely and comfortable, across the way was a roof top terrace with water features and pretty lights, as well as outdoor furniture. Perfect for stargazing in the clear night sky. I can honestly say, truthfully, that the Unicorn Hotel is the nicest place I have ever stayed. Caersws as a village is lovely and is well worth a visit for a quiet break away. Kath, Phil, and the waitresses are very friendly and considerate. In a way, we were glad that our first hotel was so bad, as it led to our stay at the Unicorn Hotel. I highly recommend a stay here!

We went to the unicorn hotel for a family meal whilst camping. Booking was very easy with emails answered straight away. We had a dog with us which they were more than happy to accommodate in the bar area. Beer choice was limited but the service and food quality was good. Food served nice and fast and all staff very friendly. Price was standard for pub food, good selection of deserts.

Stayed here on our river Severn walk. Kath and Phil are amazing, they own and run the place having modernised it and made it so popular you have to book well ahead for the restaurant. OH, and Kate still.pulls the odd shift as a district nurse. The rooms are great, this is a very old building with beams and uneven floors but they have created some lovely bedrooms.

Fabulous fresh meal chosen from a gorgeous menu, lovely friendly staff will definitely be back for sure.

We are staying locally and thought we would try to find somewhere to eat , it wasn’t easy as there are not many places locally. However we was so pleased that when we rang The Unicorn ( from the car park) that they could fit us in . When we went in was a little quiet , however 10 minutes later and was busy . We had a couple of drinks in the bar and then went through to the restaurant. The meal was excellent . The only issue was the stacked burger needed a little extra seasoning even though it was still enjoyable and my poached chicken was gorgeous as was the garlic bread with cheese . I then went on for the chocolate cake with raspberry and that too was delicious . We really enjoyed our meal and the Unicorn. The 2 lovely ladies at the bar were so friendly and warm and our server in the restaurant who was a lady called Connie , she was incredibly sweet and professional for her young years. Next time we are visiting we will definitely be stopping in for a meal at the Unicorn.

I stayed at The Unicorn (Caersws) for three nights over a motorcycle weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the visit so highly recommend a visit. There is plenty of car park space to the front/side of the hotel and the staff & owners were very friendly and helpful throughout my stay - thank you all very much. I had a single room which was clean, comfortable and had wi-Fi, TV, tea/coffee, a mini fridge and good en-suite. The bar and restaurant were again clean and comfortable and the food was very good, I had breakfast each morning and a a main course in the evening. The hotel, while not particularly large, was very busy throughout my visit and the staff were rushed ‘of their feet’ but they always made the extra effort in seeing I had all I needed. At night all was quiet and I slept well and all this was for a very reasonable price, definitely worth a visit.

Wow! What a gem of a place. We had afternoon tea for a group of 6 to celebrate two 40th birthdays. The sandwiches, Quiche, sausages rolls, spring rolls and cakes/meringues/scones were beautiful. Beautifully presented, lovely crockery that gave it a real afternoon tea feeling. Lovely atmosphere in the place too and the hosts were really friendly. Would definitely recommend and will return if I'm ever in the area. Thank you.

Booked a table here when staying about 10 miles away since other places were closed. Under new management and was told the menu was limited at the time which made me wonder what we'd get but I shouldn't have worried, it was one of the best meals in a long time! Pork belly done to perfection. A simple dish that most places get wrong. Eating alone, I was made to feel very welcome. The staff were very friendly. Decent menu choices, including several vegetarian options, although pretty standard pub fare. I recommend the lamb burger - tasty, with the added crunch of battered onion ring, lovely mint mayo for added flavour and very nicely presented.

We had fantastic food at the Unicorn. I had chicken tikka kebab, and my husband had a curry, both were great portion sizes and delicious. We also had a lemon meringue, homemade and also delicious. The Unicorn could do with updating its decor, but can't fault the food and service.

The poor lady behind the bar was left on her own to serve food and drinks, take orders, clear tables and sort the bills out this meant service was very slow, obviously no fault of hers but this made us feel very uncomfortable as the restaurant was quite busy with people waiting, We only had main courses as our table wasn’t cleared and we were not asked if we wanted dessert or coffees sadly as we would have liked to have stayed longer at the restaurant with our family who were up visiting. We felt that we should just pay and go just to make things easier. Sadly for a first visit to this pub we were not impressed. On the up side the food was lovely so thank you to the kitchen staff.

Passing through so we made this our stop and we are sure glad we did. We had the unicorn burger and it was amazing, meaty and huge. Thoroughly recommend this pub.

Lovely meal celebrating a birthday mid-week. Staff were really pleasant, and we enjoyed our meals. Plenty of choice on the menu, some with a twist, like hunter chicken in a bbq sauce which was actually delicious and not too spicy. My brother chose the lie of the day, which was home made and really taster and my hungry husband went for the gammon which was huge, with onion rings, fries, egg and tomatoe. We had to have dessert and weren’t disappointed with a sticky toffee pudding, homemade bake well tart and a honeycomb cheesecake which was too die for’! Will definitely be going back.

My husband and I staying nearby for few nights and booked a table for birthday meal!! Ended up going in every day (with our dog) for drinks and food!! Fabulous place!! Made very welcome by the owner on the first visit and can’t praise Katie the young lady behind the bar enough!!! Couldn’t do enough for us!! Absolute delight!! Food was fantastic!! Called in for lunch. Hubby reasonably happy with lamb rump but I had lasagne. At £13 I was not expecting to get vast amounts of gloopy cheese sauce a couple of small lumps of minced beef and one sheet of pasta! Will not be returning

We stopped at the unicorn during a weeks break away in caersws. We where greeted by a friendly barmaid who immediately made us feel welcome. We ordered the beef and Stilton pie with dauphinois potatoes, it was delicious and neither of us left a bit of it. We will most definitely be popping back in again whilst we are on holibobs. Lovely interior and very clean, can’t fault the place. Well worth a visit.

Good freshly cooked food. Tasty and well served. Staff vert friendly. Good choice was very good. Recommended for family and couples as I saw nice plates of children’s food. Will go back in coming months, and maybe a Carvery!

Stayed here for an evening meal with my wife we both had slow cooked loin of pork. It was served on a bed on butter mashed potatoes on other vegetables, it was so nice the pork melted in your mouth and the mash was so creamy. We will be going back there next year when on holiday again.

This is a really great place to stay in mid Wales. The en-suite bedrooms are fabulous with every comfort. The proprietors, Phil and Kathy and their staff are so welcoming and attentive to all our needs. The food is simply superb and the Sunday Carvery is magnificent! But remember to book in advance! Called in a couple of nights ago for a meal, what a let down after reading the reviews.The glass my wine was served in was dirty, lipstick still on the rim from someone else, no orange juice for my friend who was the driver, my husbands lager was also flat.. Ordered the gammon, cooked on one side, but not the other, chips were hard in the middle, they would have been lovely if cooked for another 5 or 6 minutes. Lady behind the bar and waitress seemed very unorganised, certainly will not be returning.
