The Unicorn in Aylesbury Vale

Unfortunately our experience was rather disappointing. The young man that served us was pleasant and attentive - but the food was extremely disappointing. A party of 3 - 2 had the Seafood salad starter (light eaters) and 1 had the Seafood starter but as a main. The lack of seafood in both the starter portions (£13) and the main (£20) was disappointing. The starters had 4-5 prawns and a similar number of mussels and the main had an additional one or 2 of each - but we all thought we had not received any crab meat. On closer inspection we could see extremely small crumbs of crab meat scattered throughout the lettuce leaves but so little as to give no discernible taste. The pudding was nice and the pub itself was pleasant - maybe we were just unfortunate in our choice of dish.

Great village pub which we haven’t been to for over 20 years. Service great,hospitality great food great. Shame couple of items on the evening menu were not available however the specials filled the gap. Food plentiful and really good. Service by the team exceptional not pushy ,polite and nothing too much trouble. Credit to the establishment. I can say we won’t be waiting another 20 years to visit again. Highly recommended.

We have often visited over the years and never had anything less than great food and great service. Visited for Sunday lunch and as it was a rare sunny day we sat in the garden rather than the restaurant. All had Roasts, all excellent and plenty of veg which is a rarity these days. Pleasant staff and friendly atmosphere. Always clean and tidy. Tring Brewery beer well kept.

We visited this pub for a birthday lunch this month. We live in Cheddington and are regulars at The Old Swan, so decided to try out the sister pub. What a treat! Interesting, eclectic menu, coupled with impeccable service and fair pricing. What more can you ask for? Well done to all the team. We will be back.

Ordered fish and chips. Fish was strange tasting (on the old side?) and batter was greasy. I left it. Mushy peas were hard and inedible. Chips were great! Pointed out the problems to the (very pleasant) waiting staff but no reduction to the price charged was given. We won’t be returning. Shame, as at one time this was our “go to” lunch venue.

Disappointing. £10 for a very thin cheese and onion sandwich. Thin sliced bread with very little filling.

We had a two course meal here last night. The restaurant wasn’t busy. It was warm and cosy, with a central fire. The food was excellent, and well presented. We will return.

What a find ! This is a real gem and within easy walk across the fields from Abbots Farm caravan site. The food was absolutely top notch , very reasonably priced, freshly cooked and fabulously presented. There's plenty of vegetarian choice and it's absolutely delicious. This is a members only pub. It doesn’t matter if you live in village. If Gordon don’t like you that’s it. There are 150 houses in the village the residents of about 5 use it. Says everything

Overpriced, Lamb on the menu was a very small main meal. Found the tables very small, service and staff very good. Pity about the menu. Hope it improves, pub side and staff very good.

Nice village pub with friendly and helpful service. Great menu, full of promise and sounded exciting, hence choosing this place rather than others. Sadly the food was average at best and just didn't deliver the wow factor or to the standard we'd hoped for, especially having read others reviews. We left somewhat disappointed.

Really enjoyed our meal. We had pork belly, lamb vegetable curry and chicken burger. All very good especially the lamb dish which I looked on enviously as I chose the veg curry. We all had a pudding mine was the chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and ice cream, very yummy. Lovely atmosphere on a busy night and efficient friendly service. Looking forward to another visit.

This fantastic country style gastro pub restaurant never disappoints. The staff are so welcoming & friendly. In reality this can be between average and very good. I do like the beer garden and in the summer they had an outside performance in the garden which was excellent with no little thanks to the British weather raining on everyone. Suffice to say we had a meal prior which was good but can be more hit than miss on occasions. Based in a lovely village, if you’re passing, it’s always welcoming.

Came for dinner on Saturday night with family to celebrate a special occasion. The staff went above and beyond to make it very special the food was amazing as the chef cooked a special Beef Wellington for the occasion we also had starters of the menu they all could not be faulted all came out together and all clean plates . We all felt very safe eating and drinking here so no worry’s at all the pub has a great ambience that makes you feel welcome and comfortable from the moment you walk in. Went to the Unicorn last night for their steak night and was extremely delighted with the service we received. I think Livvy or something similar was the managers name and she was as welcoming as could be. She really lightens up the room and you can see she manages her staff with great integrity and kindness. Our waitress Charlina was also very sweet but a little on the shy side, which was endearing. She recommended food and drinks which went down a treat. Scrumptious! Will be back again very soon!

I came to the Unicorn after looking for a restaurant to eat in as I was spending In the local area having travelled down from Halifax.The food I must say was absolutely fantastic. The staff were incredibly pleasant and the food was even more so. When looking at the menu I was puzzled as to what to have for my meal but the kind waitress showed me to the burger. Everything about it was perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, I even managed to successfully navigate my way around the one way system with the help of a lovely kind barmaid who was also from Yorkshire.If I am ever passing through in the future, I shall certainly be stopping to treat myself again.Please do experience The Unicorn, this truly is the unicorn of pubs.

Brought my family here last weekend for dinner. Felt very welcome by the bar staff as soon as we arrived! Food was excellent and you get your money’s worth. It’s our first outing since covid and we were made to feel very safe. Will definitely be back!

Visited this wonderful pub on a sunny Friday afternoon to enjoy a drink on the superb garden. We weren't disappointed. Libby and Charlotte made us feel really welcome, as they always do. Arrangements for the accursed Covid19 were very professional, as expected. Overheard the chef say the restaurant was fully booked for the evening which is great. This place thoroughly deserves to be frequented by regulars and the occasionals alike. Wonderful.

Go here often with my family and really liked it. Now there is new management it is much nicer from the inside. The serving of food has improved and the garden area is very good (perfect for summer). Went to The Unicorn for dinner last night, my first trip there under the management. Wow, delightful bar and waiting staff, lovely warm ambience and delicious food. We shared the Aylesbury Scotch Egg and I had the Smoked Haddock & Leek risotto, both were a treat. I can highly recommend this lovely pub.

This lovely pub is finally being managed by people who care, and who understand what people want: A good selection on the menu, good food very well cooked, and staff who are enthusiastic, efficient, friendly and courteous. We are local and we are delighted. We will definitely return for more.

Great to see The Unicorn rejuvenated under new management. A proper pub serving great food in a lovely old building.Good selection of beers, on the menu - great to see pub classics mixed with a good variety of specials - which were delicious. My husband and I visited the Unicorn last night and had a great experience with delicious food, great service from Libby, fab selection of gins, and an all round great evening in a cosy and friendly pub. The new management have really turned things around. Highly recommend!

I visited the Unicorn this evening & had a really tasty meal. My husband has recently had to change to a gluten free diet, so eating out can be a challenge, but not this evening. The staff were so helpful, and helped us out with choosing a suitable meal.Lovely food, friendly helpful staff, great new management. Will definitely be returning.

We had a fab meal this evening at the Unicorn. It’s under new management, it’s had a bit of a makeover & looks lovely and is very comfortable, the staff are nice too, its so great to have the relaxed atmosphere back that the Unicorn once had. It’s also really lovely to have a good selection of pub classics hot & cold as wells as specials. They also do a mean hot chocolate which is very welcome as is the fire after a cold walk with the dogs, dogs are welcome in the bar area where there’s a bowl of water for them as well as a cuddle & dog biscuit from the staff. We shall definitely be using the Unicorn regularly as we once did. We wish the new owners & staff every success, thank you.

Booked by phone explained we would have our small dog with us, on arrival greeting words you cannot eat in restaurant but in bar area, which were fully aware of, but although lady in bar knew my name so must have had record of booking no table reserved or laid up for five. Waiting for family to arrive from Stafford we had travelled from Surrey, advised again we needed to go to table and order as they had a party of 25 in and if not ordered before them we would just have to wait for food. Only a choice of 5 main meals as Sunday, four of us had the chicken and ham pie, realised would have half hour wait while cooked, pie tasted good, but vegetables disappointing one piece of carrot and a couple of leaves of cabbage. Dessert no provision for sugar or gluten free, three of us had the rhubarb with white chocolate crumble, and clotted cream, the crumble was white chocolate chips on the rhubarb and a long wait for it, very small portions. Also two people asked for alcohol free beer, waitress told us what they stocked they both said fine, only for her to come back and say did not stock anymore. The manager who was lovely said later he was waiting for more to be delivered so do not know what was fact. Wish we had been advised that they had a party of 25 in and would be a long wait for food before they accepted the booking as they obviously did not have extra staff, also the party gathering in the bar area where we were seated meant we could not hear our selves speak, why they could not have gone to function room I do not know. I had recommended this pub after stopping for coffee on a previous visit to area, and felt embarrassed.

My girlfriend and I popped in one Saturday lunch time as we were passing.

I was here recently in the function room and had a great night. The menu was perfectly sized- small, but every option interesting and tempting. The staff were very accommodating and we felt well looked after. The food was- as usual- delicious. Yes, there was a bit of a wait but I’d much rather that and tasty, quality food than quick, microwaved rubbish.

The pub and staff are welcoming, the is good but the wait for it can be very long depending on the time when you visit. The Fish and Chips always tasty and desert excellent. We have also been on Steak night this is excellent and well worth the price would recommend for a quiet night out , without the children.

Hadn't been for a little while. Set menu only available, £21 for 2 courses. Two of us had fish and chips and one the grilled mackerel. Out of the 3 desserts on offer the one we wanted wasn't available. Were charged the weekend 1 course rate of £17. While the food was tasty this was extremely poor value for money. We were told to take the service charge off, which was already a given to be honest. Won't be returning any time soon.

Lovely pub & garden with good ambience in a nice little village. First visit here & Chris & Claire were both welcoming & went the extra to provide us with great service & a delicious Sunday roast. Will definitely return, especially as they also have different events happening at various times that sound like fun. Bit pricey yes, but the quality was excellent.

Very disappointed. Booked for lunch, friends wanted sandwiches as was very hot. Ordered, staff took 30 minutes to tell us that only enough salmon for 1 of our orders. Fish platter was served with cheeses ! No question before from staff of on menu ?? They never thought that customer might have ordered fish platter because they were non-diary!! Sandwiches were so bland could have been made by a child , no class.

We have eaten at the Unicorn a number of times over the past 4 years and have always had excellent food, and cheerful service.

What a shame! This used to be a decent pub with good customer values. I went in with my old mum for a drink. Bad atmosphere, no welcome and you just sensed that standards were low and no-one cared and no-one was in charge. We stood for 5 mins for a drink and no-one looked up, people just clearing glasses and chatting to mates, oblivious of the two customers. We left (still unnoticed!) and went to the Pilgrim in North Marsden. Different class: welcome, engaged and good value - like the splendid Five Elms in Weedon. Someone told me in the Pilgrim - not an employee but a punter - that the Unicorn is expensive and has seriously nose-dived. I won’t be returning or recommending it, as I used to. Poor.

I went to Madrid.... The Royal Madrid, last week and stayed in the Hotel Opera next to the Madrid Opera House and paid €4.00 for a pint of Estrella. The Unicorn is the epitomy of Rip off Britain.

We have been to The Unicorn several times over the past 4 years that we’ve lived in the area. It was our go to Sunday Roast in one of the villages outside Leighton Buzzard, where we live. The prices are higher than most pubs in the area and food is tasty, with and old worldly atmosphere that comes with this beautifully situated pub in a picturesque village.

Having dined here several times over the last four/five years we had left it for a while after appalling service last year. Hoping it was a one off we tried again this weekend. Unfortunately we shouldn't have bothered. It was atrocious. There was one poor girl left to run the whole place it would seem, another occasionally popped her head around. We waited nearly an hour to be served our food, which was tasty but not really worth the wait. We then ordered dessert only to be told, twenty minutes after ordering, that one of the options on the messily written menu, was unavailable. We cancelled our dessert order, paid up and left. They took the price of one meal off the bill, but we won't be visiting again, unless we hear that the place has hugely upped it's game. Not good enough. Not good at all. Avoid, unless you're happy to wait for hours for your food.

Saturday night but only us and one other party of 4 all night. Could see why by the time we left! Scrappily written chalk board menu carried over to us with limited uninspiring menu. The full menu posted outside not available. Steak nice but chips were dry...not good when literally steak and chips!! Duck just ok. Used to be a dead cert for a good meal. Won’t be going back which is a shame because used to be great and pub itself and setting is lovely.
