Visited as a lunch out treat. Couldn't fault the service or the food which was served in a timely manner . We enjoyed the Hake with clam chowder and hubby had the chicken burger which he said was cooked beautifully and wasn't at all dry. Would highly recommend here for a good quality meal with friendly service and topped off with a sea view.

From start to finish our experience here was quite confusing. I’m not sure if the staff were new. We were seated at an empty table (no cutlery or glasses etc) and after a few minutes were asked if we wanted any drinks, we said we didn’t have a drinks menu to look to pick these and we were told they haven’t made it yet. We received our drinks and were then asked for our food order by a different member of staff. Our starters arrived within a reasonable time and were quite tasty. We did have to ask for cutlery to eat them though. This was followed by a long delay with nobody coming to take our plates or check on us. After maybe 30 minutes, we were asked if we’d like our main course and the plates were taken (dropping some of the cutlery on the floor) My mussels were underwhelming and the sauce wasn’t nice, the mussels themselves were not fresh and an off colour. My partners ribs were small after she was told there wasn’t much difference between the small and large portion (I’m sure this isn’t true) Two of my party ordered salads with chicken, there was no chicken on them so they asked for the chicken to be added. 15 minutes later we were told the chef had forgotten and would they still like the chicken? Perhaps there’s some teething problems as I understand there’s been a change of owner. The service and food were both questionable.

Lots of other reviews here flag up the slow service but it was fine for us, and very helpful and pleasant too. The Torbay sole was very nice, and the ribs went down very well with our kids. Lively atmosphere too.

Just wanted to write about the experience my family and I had on Sunday! They quite often take me out for a Sunday lunch, the joys of being a grandma! We don't often stray from Truro for ease but as it was such a nice day weather wise they suggested we go further afield! I've never been to The Unicorn before but my granddaughter had seen a Facebook post of huge Yorkshire puddings and thought I'd like it. The venue itself is lovely, we sat in the conservatory which was warm and light! All the staff seemed nice and happy to be there which is rare! I really enjoyed the roast I had and my granddaughter was right, the Yorkshires were huge! I was pretty full but did opt to have the homemade Chocolate Mousse with Chantilly cream! It was a little lumpy but so tasty that it didn't matter! Will be back for sure!

So disappointed …as a local, we chosed to eat here based on their recent Facebook posts promoting a new chef and great photos. This was a very special family goodbye, however, it was totally spoiled by poor food and poor service…The ‘rare’ roast beef was overcooked , cold and fatty. When we requested some horseradish sauce to accompany it we were informed they don’t serve any. The chicken breast was actually a chicken leg which we then continued to wait for it to be replaced. The Prosecco was 125 ml measured out into a separate glass and flat….the service was unapologetic and our concerns were ignored.

Enjoyed a very nice Sunday lunch here recently, felt they could have had a bit more meat options - beef and chicken were the only two on offer, although they did have their full a la carte menu on alongside too. Beef was cooked beautifully, plenty of vegetables, roasties and a huge yorkshire pudding. I got a side of cauliflower cheese which went down lovely. Service was fast, and friendly. Perfect location by the beach, I’d recommend booking as it got busy fast!

Avoid ...the car park will issue false penalty notices. I notice there are multiple complaints about the car park. So this is a 1 star review purely on the basis that we used the car park this March, paid and displayed for a ticket including the car reg. Two weeks later a bullying demand for £100 arrived. Unusually I have retained the ticket so have proof of making a cash payment ( The machine was unable to process card payments) . I'm surprised at just how angry I feel about this. And cautious about commuting to any appeal process with such a company.

We love this place and when we’re in the area we pop in. Prices now at the Unicorn, with a burger served with a handful of fries is £16, is most probably going to stop us returning for our lunchtime treat. Not sure why, but not just ourselves but other customers found the restaurant freezing and kept coats on during dining. I hope that restaurant/pubs will be able in the future, when possible start to reduce their prices when their outgoings hopefully reduce, as I feel and listening to others that going out is becoming too expensive and I’m fearful that more establishments will suffer with reduce footfall.

Since moving two years ago the Unicorn fast became our favourite local. However over the last six months, it has sadly spiralled downhill. I’d say we usually visit once a month, either popping in for a drink after the beach, a casual lunch with the children or date night dinner. The last four times, unfortunately, I’ve had to bring something to staff attention. During a lunch in January there was a large dog that barked consistently for 20 minutes until I asked the waitress to have a word as we couldn’t hear ourselves think. During evening drinks in February there was a wet sandy dog roaming around the restaurant which then came and sat next to our table scratching and stinky. So inappropriate having dogs in a restaurant setting when you’re trying to enjoy a drink or meal. The Unicorn seems to want to be on the more up market scale with nice food, fancy cocktails and fairly expensive prices, yet allows dogs to roam around like some casual sandy beach pub. When I came for lunch with my parents later in Feb I spoke to Harry (who I assume is bar manager) about the two previous visits where feral dogs had ruined our time. He said he would pass on my feedback and details to the owner; I never heard anything back. That particular lunchtime mine and my Mum’s sole (which I’ve previously had twice and was delicious) was so overcooked and dry it had to be sent back, second time round it wasn’t much better but just about edible. Not to mention there was a window cleaner doing all the windows/roof during lunch - surely arrange that for out of service hours? Last night was the absolute pits though, which has driven me to write a review in the hope that the owners take some notice before they lose all their local customers. My husband and I came for an early date night at 6.30pm. We were seated by the window - it was FREEZING. And I mean freezing cold. I thought maybe it was just a draft by the window so we asked to move. It was still freezing away from the window… we looked around and everyone was sat in coats and hats!!! I said to the poor waitress “is it really flipping cold in here?” and she said she was so sorry but they were out of oil, and had no way to turn the heating on??? Surely you should be letting people know it’s Antarctica before they arrive or at least offer an apology and complimentary drink on arrival. Harry is the only one that seems to be able to hold the whole show together, even though he’s been left with no tools to do so. The other day he was left completely out of lager. He is super friendly, accommodating, and makes excellent cocktails; yet has to take endless criticism on the chin, even though he has no real power to improve the restaurant. The Unicorn would really be completely lost without him and quite frankly he needs a pay rise for the amount he has to put up with. Our food last night, was excellent, but for a £72 bill I would rather be at home heating my own house for a month with some takeaway fish and chips. Oh and I might also like to add when we visited for dinner in October and parked in the car park (which says on the website free parking for Unicorn customers) we were issued with a parking fine through the post. The staff don’t ask you if you have a car in the car park or let you know you need to put your registration details to obtain the free parking. I honestly don’t know why we keep going back, it’s getting embarrassing to call it our local.

I'm so disappointed expected apology from the owner .was dreadful ask gluten free Dinna no gravy y didn't thay tell us that . Not very professional. Changed the meal to burger was awful no words . Paid £ 29.00 2 bottles gluten beer also coffee cold roast dinner. No words was in shock thinking the manager would spoken to us . We local ppl definitely will not eat there again . Please can you justify the price being charged for a packet of Bart crisps £2.50 is totally over the top especially when normal retail outlets only charge a £1 even the national trust known for high prices don’t charge this much for the same packet of crisps

Having had an excellent meal at the Unicorn previously during the summer, I recently made a booking for 17 family and friends to host a surprise birthday dinner for my wife. The Team at the Unicorn couldn't have been more helpful. They allowed us us to come in early to decorate the room and tables and also took delivery of and stored a large cake we had made for the event. On the evening they helped heard everyone onto the room for the surprise moment, and all of the guests commented on how lovely the staff were. The food was superb and despite the large variety of different dishes, all 17 meals arrived in rapid succession. My sincere thanks to the Team at the Unicorn for making this such a memorable experience. We will be back..

Absolutely loved our visit to this little hidden gem. Great food (best sticky toffee pudding I’ve ever eaten) and great atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble for our waitress Ella (I think that’s her name) and when we mentioned it was our wedding anniversary the manager gave us 2 glasses of fizz on the house! Uninspiring menu, it was difficult choose because of the menu choices. sent steak back but still couldn’t cook it properly. Everything else was under average. Staff didn’t point out the car park was private when we arrived despite it being dark so now expecting a ticket when all they had to do was ask us to put our registration in the iPad. Won’t be returning.

Great staff, nice location but the food was poor. Hard bread, split butter, over creamy soup, dry nachos and we were served tomato’s which were unpleasant to eat, and they were the star of the dish - I left them. Nice drinks - shame about the food.

Came for the Christmas Market and the father christmas which was all free and wonderfully festive. Lovely community feel to this pub and the good is always so good with great awareness of allergies. Play park a stones throw away for the kids. Dog friendly.

We went for lunch, three adults and two children. The waitress was friendly and handled the delay with our orders well. When our meal arrived after 45 minutes it wasn’t served all together meaning we didn’t eat together. We ordered a children’s chicken burger but my grandson didn’t like it. The reason was evident when we tasted it, the bun had been burnt and the whole thing tasted unpleasant as a result. I had the cauliflower and blue cheese soup, which was tasty but the accompanying bread had to be returned as one piece was contaminated with what looked like meat blood. The replacement also tasted burnt and was inedible. Overall it was an extremely disappointing meal, the waitress never asked if our meal was satisfactory, she seemed far more interested in an adjacent table where she appeared to know the diners. We have dined at the Unicorn before but we will not be returning as there are many other excellent local restaurants to choose from.

I saw the flyer for their craft market while on the bus and decided to pop down this Saturday and see what it was like! Arrived around midday to find a nice display of stalls in the bar area. I ordered myself a coffee at the bar as there wasn't many places left to sit. I spoke with Harry, lovely young man who sorted me out a lovely decaff latte. There was a really nice buzz in the place. Had a look around all the stall, lots of variety and even managed to pick up a few gifts! On my way out I noticed they had Santa himself in the corner! I popped over and had a chat with him and his little helper, who turned out to be the manager. She told me they were handing out gifts and stickers to children for free and that Santa was doing it for free too!! I even went home with an 'I saw Santa at the unicorn on the beach' sticker, despite my age!! I should have brought the grandkids! Was a nice way to spend an afternoon, wasn't too chaotic and the staff were all so lovely. What community spirit the unicorn displayed, you don't see it much anymore! Hope it's on again next year!!

I hate leaving a bad review, and hate the idea of negatively affecting someone's business. However, I equally feel inclined to warn families that they may be fined for visiting. We got a 60 quid fine for parking in their carpark. I presented a receipt to prove we had been there but the appeal was declined and we had to pay, on the basis that we should have entered our reg plate on arrival. I contacted the manager who basically said it was our fault, (also gave somewhat contradictory or dishonest info) and denied that staff should have taken the initiative to provide us with ipad to input no. Plate. The whole thing has been really upsetting. The park was run down, and the restaurant was empty on a sat pm, so hey, take your chances if you dare. :(

Well, where do I begin? I booked a table for the 7 of us for my mum's 80th Birthday. A girl called Eden arranged the booking and nothing was too much trouble. When we were in our holiday accommodation in Porthtowan we had some issues with the electrics so I went down to check all was ok at The Unicorn so it would be perfect for mum. I needn't have worried: large table in light, clean conservatory and one lady explained the parking rules clearly too. i told the staff at the pub what a nightmare we were having back at the holiday home and they were sympathetic. They even let us use their pub phone to call for some assistance from the owners that night! That evening, we all went down for our evening meal. Each meal was hot, tasty, generous, and beautifully presented. The waiting staff were rushed off their feet but very efficient, even finding time to give my mum a Birthday card! After our meal, we stayed for the Open Mic Night and I even got up and sang for my Mum which was a giggle. I/ we will definitely visit again as it was perfection and more than made up for the issues back at the holiday home where a radiator actually fell off a wall as the brackets had melted, tripping out most of the electrics during the night! Well done all at The Unicorn on the Beach!

Not good service, food overpriced and not the best. Not alot of choice, nothing plain except for kids. Lots of mistakes made throughout our order. Went to The Unicorn on the beach Porthtowan last night with my family as Halloween falls mid-week this year & I have to say we all had the best evening ! We love it here any time but last night was a Halloween themed night & I have to say it was such fun ! The staff were all dressed up & having fun ! ( special mention to Beetlejuice! who's costume game was 👌) the manager Eden was happy , warm & attentive as always & made a huge effort with all the kids , giving them tattoos & things to entertain themselves ..really making them feel welcome & that makes a huge difference as a family ! To be able to go somewhere have great food & drinks at reasonable prices but also feel that ALL members of our party were welcome , even the smallest ! Not just welcome positively encouraged ! Reminds me of holidays in Spain or Italy when taking your children out with you is not only expected but encouraged & also obviously the beautiful setting on the beach ! We are so lucky to have this place nearby. It truly was the most enjoyable evening , a dj , games , costumes etc the fun atmosphere! We're all buzzing about it the next day & Can't wait for next Halloween 😆 although we will be visiting again very soon as this place is rapidly becoming our favourite "haunt" ! Thank you to the Unicorn and all the staff that put on such a great night 🎃

OH MY GOD!! I was here this afternoon for the Halloween party with my family and I was blown away. We live in the village and it is so lovely for the community to be able to come to the local for things just like this. All the staff were dressed up and involved making it fun for the children, the pub was beautifully decorated with games and activities all set up. I was able to sit and enjoy my food, (which was incredible as always) while my children could join in with the Halloween joy. Special thank you to Eden who made such a special effort with the boys bringing them sweets!! I cannot give this pub enough stars.

Just got back from the Unicorn after having a delicious dinner. What an atmosphere, it appears there was a Halloween party going on which looked so much fun! The staff were all kitted out in their Halloween get up, to the point that I nearly ran to the shop to get a costume myself. The vibes were 10/10 with music on in the background. Hopefully this will be something the pub continues every year, as the village needs something like this for a bit of fun!!

Great, so friendly and great food. We were fitted in last minute and on a Friday night too. Leah & Jazz worked hard all night to keep their customers happy. Thank you. We loved Unicorn on the Beach. A lovely setting, great atmosphere and very friendly staff even though they were very busy. The food was really good. Dog friendly too and some staff made a real effort with our dog. We would highly recommend it.
