not the easiest place to find ! Although we had satnav there are no road signs until you get to the car park which is a 20 minute walk away. Not an extensive menu, but wouldn't necessarily expect that at this time of year. We both ordered the pie & chips ; delicious, very ample portions & no room for dessert !!! Certainly worth a return visit. I would think this is very popular for anglers & walkers ; although it was a dreary day we spotted egret, heron & swans. Quite quirky !!!

Had a lovely walk along the river to get to the Turf. Welcomed by a beautiful pub on the best location. Gorgeous building. Great views. And amazing food. The winter ploughman was amazing. Great meats, pickles, bread and a cheese melt. Phenomenal flavours. The fig, hazelnut and Parma ham salad was Delicious and the Darts farm burger with truffle fries, was seemingly gorgeous. Well worth a visit. Nice walk either way to get there.

This place is a hidden gem, you can only get here by walking or ferry. We walked and had a pram with us and the walk was stunning along a river. We only had drinks but loads of places to drink along the water and the inside of the pub is really cozy. A wonderful find!

Best value burger. The chutney perfectly compliments the rich taste of the burger patties. I'm very picky when it comes to chunky chips, I gotta tell you it was also fabulous.

We ate from the outside bbq. was reasonable. lots of people about with bikes and kids. some employee with authority complex ticked me off for riding my bike across canal lock bridge (the hotel doesn't own the canal so wtf??) i pointed out to him that i was perfectly within my rights and that i was an expert rider. he said, "yeah but kids will try and emulate you". oh really? maybe he could also tell me next week's winning lottery numbers so i don't have to listen to his pseudo headmaster BS again.

A great spot on the estuary that serves a nice pint and is a great spot for a place to paddle or cycle to. Sadly the menu has changed, become more limited, and in some cases not very good. £7.50 for a kids bowl of pasta pesto was poor value. Burger was not good, and poor value at £17 chips were poor. The goats cheese open sandwich was nice, but sadly it was a choice of goats cheese or seafood in the open sandwich with selection.

What’s pants experience this was. Given the car park is just under 1 mile from the pub, I was working on this place being great. To have lasted this long when requiring such effort in a world where we want everything delivered to us right now, it must be good, right?! We arrive in time for our reservation and were eventually greeted with a cold, ‘what’s up’ from a young guy behind the bar. We were pointed in the direction of a dining room to go and sit in at the end of the building. The door was shut so I had to check it was the right room we mere headed to. When we got in there we were greeted by what looks like a serving hatch from a Chinese takeout and three large empty tables. We sat at one and decided this was where we were staying, mainly because they were that sticky, our arms were glued to the table!! This place boasts the panoramic views, not from the dining room! The windows were that dirty, you couldn’t see through them well enough to enjoy the views! This led us to wonder about the quality of the food. We discussed this as we listed to the ambient music from the Sonos in the bar/dining room coupled with the hardcore rap/drill music with some rather choice lyrics in, that was bleeding from the kitchen, at quite a volume I have to add!! The food came, it was ok, but nothing special. The atmosphere in the room was dead as we were the only ones in here, despite tables elsewhere looking available! I would imagine if you went here for a pint on the lawn in good weather, it would be a great place to anything else, I wouldn’t bother!

what a shame to see this venue go downhill so fast, having being regular customers for many years our recent experience with the new owners and expecting some improvements or changes to the already idyllic location, we were terribly disappointed. grubby uncleaned table, impolite staff and off hand attitude all around. we visited on a beautiful day at the end of July when y ou would expect crowds of visitors, but no it was very quiet, presumably the word of the decline had got about.

I love this pub! However since the new owners took over they have made some frankly cynical money grubbing changes to the menu and they must be the only pub in the country that charges for dog treats! Yes you read that right Every other pub I've ever been in that's dog friendly gives away free dog treats Not here 50p for a bonio what the actual Also me andy mate go here regularly for a beer or two or lunch , we have previously enjoyed a great crab sandwich but I was unpleasantly surprised to see it on the menu as a "Devon crab and prawn sandwich" That is not a thing! they have cynically cut the expensive crab with cheap imported prawns to cut costs , about 40% crab 60% prawn we estimate, this is disingenuous and downright dishonest , it implies the prawns are from Devon but I doubt that strongly I suspect they are imported from the far east where they are often produced in terrible conditions by indentured workers that amounts to modern slavery , it's a crying shame as the old owners where decent folk , the new guy is apparently a multi millionaire , I guess you don't get stinking rich by being kind , decent or honest , the pub will do brisk trade because of it's magical location and I'll still go there for a drink but I'd rather eat my own feet than eat there again :(

What a find! Having to walk is an extra charm too, such a beautiful stroll along the canal path. We had mussels and ploughman's lunch, both lovely. Tiramisu and lemon posset for dessert. Good drinks, nice coffee too and the views are spectacular. We managed to nab a couple of illusive deck chairs and ended up here for hours. Will 100% be back and make a day of it, maybe jump the ferry to Topsham for a hour! Positives: Charming, picturesque, well kept, good services, nice interior, excellent food, lots of exterior tables, great atmosphere, optional BBQ with vegan options. Seeing others food come out - the burgers and chips looked divine. Negatives: It's pricey, but you kinda expect it. But I guess it's kinda average prices now for pubs and you've got the location. Was a bit disappointed I had quite a few dead mussels in my portion so someone in the kitchen isn't checking them properly but I was full on what I'd had so couldn't grumble too much. Honestly had the perfect end to my week off. I think this has to be one of the best places locally.

First visit under new owners and underwhelming. £30 for 4 drinks - really expensive compared to other local options! Normally go to The Anchor at Cofton which is prettier and less pricey. We wanted a snack but kitchen was shut until 5 on a fairly busy Easter Saturday. As most people walk/cycle there and it was fairly cold people didn’t want to wait. Disappointing! Will visit for drinks again as we walk that way, But will forget the food as menu looked below average anyway.

I've been coming to the turf every spring/summer since the 80s. As I live quite locally many friends have worked there and now some of my friends children. The last 2 weeks I've been unfortunate to be served at the bar with a member of staff with a stinking attitude which has tainted the experience of visiting. When asking if there were lighter meal options I was told no, when later another member of bar staff said I could order a bowl of chips that wasn't on the menu if I liked. Then the next weekend I visited she was very obnoxious when I ordered my food and drink and overhead her being rude to other customers too. All other staff very friendly and helpful however and I won't let it prevent me from returning in thr near future.

The worst meal to date. We have been many times since the new owners have been on board. Friday night supper clubs plus multiple Sunday lunches, this meal was such a disappointment. We both had the roast beef, on ordering we asked for pink meat if possible. It was brought out and both our beef was cooked to death and tough. I sent it mine back as my Yorkshire was like concrete too. It was brought back with a new Yorkshire and the same meat. I was advised all of the meat was well done today, so no other option. The whole meal was bland and tasteless, the only thing enjoyable on the plate were the roasties. Such as disappointment all round especially after having great meals previously. We’ll stick to Rob Dawe’s pop ups elsewhere in future, as the rest of the kitchen don’t seem to uphold his standards.

If you are not 'smart phone savvy' then it can take time to order, but at least you can get a printed menu, provided you ask for one.The food and service were good and value for money, but the choice of gins & tonic were limited to the local producers and the prices were a tad high.Overall experience was worth it however.

Very noisy & extremely slow service. They are fortunate that there is no direct competition in the area for visitors getting off the ferry because it’s a very mediocre place altogether. Took an age to get a menu despite asking twice, then no one came over to take our order even though kitchen would soon close. The waiting staff were like zombies - one of them was so clueless she obviously needed more training. When we arrived one of us (luckily) had the NHS Covid app on their phone so were able to "sign in" for us all. The very helpful Joe showed us our table, and we did the ordering of the drinks and subsequently the food from our table using the QR code on the paper menu. The drinks took 10 mins to arrive, the food took 30 mins. I had the chilli beef nachos, my other half had the fish and chips, and our son had the jerk chicken burger. It was a lovely summer's day on Bank holiday Monday and this meant that lots of families were down there along with many cyclists and canoes. It was a wonderful place to sit out side along the estuary and watch the activity on the water. A nice cool drink also helped with the walk. I will come here again soon.

Went a while ago when down in Devon to visit family. Was a lovely location and service was excellent. However food came out quite cold and lacked a lot of flavour. Have been before and enjoyed so hope this was a one off

I am a hard critic mostly, but this has to be one of my best food experiences, and it’s not just the pub, location, outdoor eating facilities, great weather (on that day) and friendly staff. A family bike ride right around the Exe estuary from Dawlish Warren to Exmouth ferry(about 30kms) with my wife, 12yo and 9yo, started a while before lunch and Turf Locks was just at the right location for lunch. Three crab and lemon mayo sandwiches and one sausage and chips were delivered in a timely fashion using those vibrating table identifiers which worked great. At about £40 all-in with soft drinks and cakes wasn’t bad value either. The crab sandwiches were excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful and the choice of seating location between canal/lock or Exe estuary was marvellous. Other customers were in the same mood as you can only reach the pub by canal, river, cycle path or walking. Overall, excellent.

A meal at the Turf locks is one of our favourite things to do. Therefore when friends of ours visited from South Africa, we did not hesitate in taking them there for dinner. We enjoyed an absolutely fantastic meal there, yet again, but I was blown away at how delicious it was. Presented beautifully, my pork belly dish with new pototoes and seasonal vegetables was a solid 10 out of 10. Other dishes round the table were Lebanese lamb, with brown rice and accomplishments, again thoroughly recommended by our friends as was the sea bream. As always, one is made feel very welcome, the views over the estuary stunning and the ambience unique and very special, which all made it into an unforgettable and wonderful evening.

Lovely walk to the Turf and enjoyed some cheesey chips! Lunch menu isn’t very big but full of light sandwiches and toasties! Such a beautiful location and it’s a great dog walk too, especially from the starcross direction.

Really love our weekend cycle to Turf Locks. Staff very friendly and the food is super. We tend to have a small lunch normally a burger and a pint for 7.50 and they offer a variety of burgers. The coffee bar is amazing quality coffee which looks and tastes as good as any mainstream coffee shop. Large play area and lots of outside seating. Bike car or walk this place is worth it with stunning views all the way.

Popped in for a drink after bike ride. Staff at bar looked miserable and no smiles whatsoever. Admittedly was quite a busy Sunday afternoon, but standards should be maintained continuously. Beautiful location though, will definitely come again. Hope next time for better customer service!

With a group of cyclists again we attended upon the Turf Locks this time for a decent lunch on Saturday & it was, as always, very busy. But that didn't stop us finding decent benches to sit on outside, tables, places to leave our numerous cycles again, a fine place for the children in the group to run about & explore safely and the sunshine.

Every year we hold our annual boat trip and always go Turf Locks . The staff are so friendly, the food was fabulous and all the staff worked so hard to ensure that 58 people were fed can catered for with such lovely food - cannot fault this place hence why we go back year after year and also on other occasions with friends. Turf locks is beautifully located, stunning views and just a lovely place to visit, one of my favourite places.

Location is great, staff adequate although seemed understaffed for a sunny Saturday afternoon and the bar couldn't keep up. Having to order food and drink in two different places only added to the time it took. Food was nice, ate the peri half chicken and fish and chips, both hot and fresh. £35 for two mains and two drinks - not cheap but not unreasonable given location.

Came across this lovely place whilst taking a walk along the Exeter Canal. Stopped for a cold drink and was pleasantly surprised at the spectacular views surrounding this quaint building. Looks like it would be a winner for weddings etc. We didn't eat here this time but will return again soon to try their menu. Looks a bit pricey. Walk, cycle or canoe to this lovely spot.

Super pub located right on the edge of the estuary. Gorgeous views and plenty of room to run explore and return to the pub for a drink and some food. Family friendly, dog friendly, impressive to take visitors to. I definitely recommend a visit.

We visited during a walk along the Exeter Ship Canal, only had a Coffee, but was very welcoming and had a great choice of drinks behind the bar. There was cracking looking cakes and bar snacks, with some meals on offer too, although we didn't sample any of the food. This is a must if passing in the area, especially if you want a nice cuppa or drink and relax whilst watching the views of the Exe Estuary!

We visited the Riveria for lunch today, our first visit for 8 years and I have to say that I was very disappointed. I ordered cod and chips at a hotel next to the sea but I was given a piece of battered fish straight out of the "Bird's Eye" mould and not freshly cooked as I expected from a hotel of some repute. This was nowhere near the quality I enjoy regularly from my local Wetherspoons!

Stunning pub with amazing food, wine selection, and the owners and staff are absolutely wonderful. It's our favourite place to visit. Twinkly lights, cosy fire in the winter, and live music and garden parties in the summer. Perfect 👌

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you

I asked for a cream tea for two and was told it was £12 for one scone each and a mug, but if I wanted a pot for two and two scones it would be £18. I queried this and was told by two assistant that was right. How can that be right? Ridiculously overpriced even if it cost £12 with a pot. The scone was out of a packet and heated up (probably to soften it up) and wasn’t that thrilling!
