So taken aback to be charged £9.10 for a 175 mls glass of wine . Such a shame , beautiful place but that is very expensive. Will certainly stop me going if that’s what prices are like . Please rethink your pricing . People will stop visiting .

First visit under new owners and underwhelming. £30 for 4 drinks - really expensive compared to other local options! Normally go to The Anchor at Cofton which is prettier and less pricey. We wanted a snack but kitchen was shut until 5 on a fairly busy Easter Saturday. As most people walk/cycle there and it was fairly cold people didn’t want to wait. Disappointing! Will visit for drinks again as we walk that way, But will forget the food as menu looked below average anyway.

Great location but if you want a relaxed, leisurely meal this is not the place. Our table had a permanent queue of people for the bar beside it. The two waitresses were lovely but rushed off their feet. My partner never got her drink. Vegetables were great, meat less good. We will come back for the ambience and location, but just for a drink.

I've been coming to the turf every spring/summer since the 80s. As I live quite locally many friends have worked there and now some of my friends children. The last 2 weeks I've been unfortunate to be served at the bar with a member of staff with a stinking attitude which has tainted the experience of visiting. When asking if there were lighter meal options I was told no, when later another member of bar staff said I could order a bowl of chips that wasn't on the menu if I liked. Then the next weekend I visited she was very obnoxious when I ordered my food and drink and overhead her being rude to other customers too. All other staff very friendly and helpful however and I won't let it prevent me from returning in thr near future.

The worst meal to date. We have been many times since the new owners have been on board. Friday night supper clubs plus multiple Sunday lunches, this meal was such a disappointment. We both had the roast beef, on ordering we asked for pink meat if possible. It was brought out and both our beef was cooked to death and tough. I sent it mine back as my Yorkshire was like concrete too. It was brought back with a new Yorkshire and the same meat. I was advised all of the meat was well done today, so no other option. The whole meal was bland and tasteless, the only thing enjoyable on the plate were the roasties. Such as disappointment all round especially after having great meals previously. We’ll stick to Rob Dawe’s pop ups elsewhere in future, as the rest of the kitchen don’t seem to uphold his standards.

We don't live too far away from The Turf and it is our go-to place when we have visitors, a nice bike ride, walk or ferry ride to get there. It is a unique place, spectacular views, the service is always very good and friendly. The food is excellent, including the Sunday lunches which we have been for on other occasions (but not this time). It has never let us down, they keep good beers too. It ticks a lot of boxes. Give it a try. Andy

We, a party of 8, arrived at a full to bursting pub after a very wet and windy walk to find they hadn’t got our booking. As Londoners we expected the usual “well there’s nothing we can do we’re full” but no we heard “well let’s see what we can sort out”. Within a short time a table had been prepared and the lovely staff were serving us excellent lunchtime food. Not only were they delightful but one of them even arranged for one of our party’s jacket to be cleaned where he had gently slid over in the mud! Everyone enjoyed their food from the fish and chips to the excellent homemade soup. Well done guys no wonder you’re so busy. We have visited before during the summer and sat outside looking at the beautiful view, what a great pub.

Our first visit of many ! This is an absolute gem of a place & in a spectacular location - literally surrounded water with amazing river views & surrounded by nature. It was easy to get to & well worth the trip. We had the best pub lunch in ages - excellent food & drinks, very welcoming staff, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of choice to sit in characterful spaces inside & a truly incredible beer garden to explore outside that runs down to the water's edge in all directions. It was the perfect afternoon for our first family get together to celebrate our new grand daughter - we'll definitely be back again soon !

Had two crab sandwiches which were simple door step sandwiches with very little brown crab meat filling. Just a few crisps added. Sandwiches here used to nicely presented with a fantastic side salad. Did try to let management know but staff member went to kitchen and returned to say he would pass message on. What a shame, but hope they get message and pull their socks up. £9.50 for a very basic sandwich is just not good enough.

If you are not 'smart phone savvy' then it can take time to order, but at least you can get a printed menu, provided you ask for one.The food and service were good and value for money, but the choice of gins & tonic were limited to the local producers and the prices were a tad high.Overall experience was worth it however.

Very noisy & extremely slow service. They are fortunate that there is no direct competition in the area for visitors getting off the ferry because it’s a very mediocre place altogether. Took an age to get a menu despite asking twice, then no one came over to take our order even though kitchen would soon close. The waiting staff were like zombies - one of them was so clueless she obviously needed more training. Surprisingly there were no cakes to go with coffee or cream tea/scone options despite it being a hotel. Sandwiches were ok but underwhelming. Don’t think we’ll bother again.

When we arrived one of us (luckily) had the NHS Covid app on their phone so were able to "sign in" for us all. The very helpful Joe showed us our table, and we did the ordering of the drinks and subsequently the food from our table using the QR code on the paper menu. The drinks took 10 mins to arrive, the food took 30 mins. I had the chilli beef nachos, my other half had the fish and chips, and our son had the jerk chicken burger. The food was excellent, as always. The system with the QR codes worked well, and it was busy and active, but it is such a beautiful location.

I am a hard critic mostly, but this has to be one of my best food experiences, and it’s not just the pub, location, outdoor eating facilities, great weather (on that day) and friendly staff. A family bike ride right around the Exe estuary from Dawlish Warren to Exmouth ferry(about 30kms) with my wife, 12yo and 9yo, started a while before lunch and Turf Locks was just at the right location for lunch. Three crab and lemon mayo sandwiches and one sausage and chips were delivered in a timely fashion using those vibrating table identifiers which worked great. At about £40 all-in with soft drinks and cakes wasn’t bad value either. The crab sandwiches were excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful and the choice of seating location between canal/lock or Exe estuary was marvellous. Other customers were in the same mood as you can only reach the pub by canal, river, cycle path or walking. Overall, excellent.

Presented beautifully, my pork belly dish with new pototoes and seasonal vegetables was a solid 10 out of 10. Other dishes round the table were Lebanese lamb, with brown rice and accomplishments, again thoroughly recommended by our friends as was the sea bream.

An excellent meal particularly with the recommendation by the member of staff I think her name was Robbie or Bobbie. Well worth a visit.

We visited during a walk along the Exeter Ship Canal, only had a Coffee, but was very welcoming and had a great choice of drinks behind the bar. There was cracking looking cakes and bar snacks, with some meals on offer too, although we didn't sample any of the food. This is a must if passing in the area, especially if you want a nice cuppa or drink and relax whilst watching the views of the Exe Estuary!

After moving from London to Exeter a couple of years ago, I was amazed to only find this absolute gem yesterday! Can’t believe I haven’t been sooner! Yes granted it’s not accessible by car and it’s a bit of a trek to get there, but It is totally worth it! So happy I stumbled across this place and can’t wait to get back to try the food (and their homemade cakes. Yum!) staff were also very attentive and super friendly. Lovely vibe around the whole place. Truly is a little hidden heaven, just outside Exeter. Itching to get back, Nowhere better to spend a sunny day! :)

Awful food, the owner was horridly rude, do not take children as full of dog pooh on the lawn, way to expensive, food when it did arrive was tiny, hugely overrated

Booked a party here and got it reserved. Just decided to give it away with no communication. Ruth tried to lie to me on the phone as say she hadn’t received my email then read it out over the phone. Total shambles!

Well kept beers and good food in a location that is near to paradise. Been going there for 50 years and it is one of the best locations in the West.

Stopped off on a Sunday walk with friends. First time here. Said only open at lunchtimes. Ordered 3 beers, including Czech favourite of mine Budvar. Also a decaf coffee, cappuccino and a tea. Service and price fine.

We caught the Penny Ferry from Topsham to the Exeter canal and walked up ¾ hour to the Turf Locks. We could have cycled from Exeter itself or caught another ferry from Exmouth and walked further. At the end of the Canal it is a popular site with a superb view (on a good weather day) Lots of good drinks on offer - I drank local still cider. Food was good regular pub food. Can be a little cramped on a busy day... got a place in the drinks/food queue while we asked the group for orders!!! Good place - lovely walk/cycle

We parked our car at St Clements Church, Powderham and walked the mile or so along the banks of the estuary. Good menu, but went for the burger& beer offer, good choice. Cracking little pub with a large beer garden. Very family and dog-friendly. You have to walk, cycle, canoe , paddleboard or arrive by ferry from Topsham or Exmouth. No car access. Was very busy and its probably worth booking a table if the weather is unsettled.

Took the ferry from Exmouth to Starcross and walked the couple of miles to the Turf Hotel. I’d booked a table inside as the weather wasn’t so great and we had a nice big table by the door. Good beer. We ordered Fish and Chips which was clean and tasty, the batter wasn’t greasy and the fish was large and flaky white. Although the bar is small the service we found to be efficient and friendly. The food arrived promptly and the waiting staff were friendly.

Stopped by Turf Locks for lunch whilst on a bike ride. Fantastic views and lovely staff. Food is always excellent quality and nice to have a mix of sandwiches/ toasties as well as proper main courses. Service can be a bit slow (we waited 40 minutes for our sandwiches) but with a lovely beer garden to chill in, you can't go too far wrong.

We paddleboarded down the canal and stopped at the turf for lunch/fuel for the second half of the day going back up the estuary. It has a big outdoor seating area right on the River edge and although it was busy (with a 50min wait for food), there was enough room for everyone and the staff were great!

Lovely end to a bike ride along the River Exe. This pub cannot be accessed by road but is well worth the walk or bike ride. It is popular in the summer so there can be queues but service is quick and friendly. Pleasant views but scenery on the way there and back is even more beautiful.

Second time we’ve been here with 2 young children for lunch - both times were worth the bike ride from Exeter. Great food, good beer, friendly staff and a lovely scenic spot between the canal and estuary, with room for the kids to safely run about. Lovely place to chill.

Visited yesterday evening for a meal. You have to want to go to this location either by walking, cycling or by ferry but it is so worth it when you do. Good but limited menu options but something to suit everyone. Very dog friendly and despite there being quite a few people about it didn't feel over crowded. Very relaxed and pleasant evening.
