.A rarity almost: an indepenent pub not owned by a chain. Small menu but nothing bad about that. Fayre on offer unpretentious and honest: no frills or twiddly bits. We (3 of us) all had the fish and chips. Not sure what fish it was but it was fine as were the very good chips. Very decent sized portions and could not manage desserts Specials available (also getting to be a rarity) but as I didn't see them can't comment. Decent selection of beers. Pretty popular for a Monday lunchtime. Downsides: well the olives and flat bread were overpriced at £9, especially as the flatbread was not very nice. It's a pretty basic sort of place that hasn't been tarted up but that's not a bad thing given that the food was better than anything from Mitchell and Butler, Fullers et al. Were it not for the flatbread I'd have said it merited better than average.

Visited several times for drinks in the garden and wanted to try the food. When we decided to go for Sunday lunch on a wet birthday Sunday we weren’t disappointed. The choice on the day we were there was of beef or pork, we opted for pork and when it arrived it there was plenty of it, along with roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, stuffing, gravy and a great selection of vegetables (parsnips, swede/carrot mash, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower and a separate dish of broccoli cheese). Served hot and fresh by friendly staff. Best roast dinner we’ve ever had outside of home. Would fully recommend and will definitely be visiting again soon. Nice old fashioned pub with good atmosphere and staff.

On a recent return trip, we had lunch here with two sets of friends. Between us all we had the excellent homemade pie (beef & Stilton), faggots (local game), fish sharing boards, Jake on a bed of a fab chowder, local sausages, and we all agreed the food was too notch. The Specials board is updated all week. Sometimes it’s hard to choose ! Between the lunches, we popped in for drinks a couple of times and were greeted warmly by the Landlord and staff. It was also nice to sit by the roaring fire on very cold afternoons.

I visited The Turfcutters back in November, the meal was good but nothing special. I enjoyed the atmosphere and service was good. I paid for my meal and was going to leave a tip. I asked the staff if they get the tips and I was disappointed when I found out that they do not get the tips/ tips are not shared equally. I think that this is unfair as they work very hard and play a part in the great atmosphere, that I enjoyed.

This isn't the fanciest of places but it is exactly what it says it is. The food was tasty and filling, the beer good and the staff what you would expect in a pub. This isn't fine dining but that isn't what you want from this place. The beef stew and chilli where excellent. The music on offer after was also good.

Truly awful - and no suitable toilets. The food we were served was below average, the coffees were unfortunately not good at all. The service from the woman running the cafe was disgraceful. She seemed off from the outset, and was downright rude in the end after one of our group was reduced to tears by her behaviour. Most importantly the toilet was not suitable for visitors to use, you have to squeeze through the kitchen which is open to the seating area to get to the toilet, which is extremely close to where food is being prepared and completely inaccessible for anyone with mobility issues. The toilet door did not shut, so the woman who runs the cafe had to slam shut another door in order for there to be any privacy (and any level of hygiene), which then resulted in one of our party being trapped inside the toilet unable to get out. When another member of our party was eventually able to force the door open from the outside and the person who was trapped was understandably shaken at the experience, the women running the cafe had the nerve to tell her to calm down, and then denied having said anything at all. All in all it was a horrendous experience, no redeeming features - this unfortunate situation could have been helped with a kind manner but instead was made much worse. Avoid. We will be making a formal complaint to the food standards agency. A bizarre and upsetting experience!
