Such a cosy place in this sweet town! We managed to order a few minutes before the kitchen was about to close and the portions were extremely generous! Fresh and tasty cod with an amazing tartare sauce highly recommended!

We had a wonderful meal at Montys. We had our two dogs with us and they were given dog beds, treats and water. They loved it and it made for a relaxing meal with our dogs snoozing beside the table. Food was lovely and staff were great. Would definitely recommend!

Third time visiting this place first time food was cold so they took back brought it out again and it was still cold 2nd time place was half empty but chef was too busy to cook for us third time booked for 4 people but they only laid the table for two. Each time staff have been very polite but not a friendly atmosphere I must say the third time the food was very hot which was great. we also waited over twenty minutes for our bill in the end we went to the bar and paid

It's been at least a couple of years since mum and I visited Monty's, which is part of Montague Hotel and Restaurant, Beaulieu. At that time there was a bar menu and we each had a sandwich and a pint, the place was lively and we enjoyed ourselves despite noisy children. Our return visit was awful. We walked into the bar area and no staff (the barman was changing a barrel but this wasn't relayed to us when I went to the restaurant side to find a member of staff). Lifeless and souless. The customers comprised a family with a noisy barking dog who thankfully left and a chap sat by the fire. I asked for a bar menu and the reply was "we don't have one but we have a restaurant menu". I scanned it and thought at nearly £30 per dish for a main course....no thank you. I went back to the bar area and mum spotted that there was 'soup of the day' being advertised which was being served with a toastie (mum would have the soup and I would have the toasty). I then ordered 2 halfs of Flack Manor's Romsey Gold. I set up a tab and the 2 halfs came to £7... you do the per-pint maths. Far too expensive, even by London prices and this is only 4% ABV. Even Molson Coors Blue Moon 5.4% is only £6.80 in establishments near to this place, and is of far superior quality. The few (and young) staff present needed more experience in working in a bar and being able to offer banter with customers and the lack of any atmosphere caused me to cancelled our food order, pay for our drinks and leave. It was the first time I have ever cancelled a food order in my life. I'm unsure who owns this place and whether it is part of Lord Montague's empire. If you're wanting an up-market meal then yes, this would be perfect, eating in the restaurant. But for what should be a lively bar with its own menu then please don't bother. You will be disappointed. This place has so much potential but is desperately lacking personality. Maybe it relies to much on its location, the seasonal tourists and the fact that there is no other bar in the village. Running a bar with hotel and restaurant staff doesn't work.

Underwhelming meals. Overpriced for flavour and presentation. Service was slow, inattentive, and basic. Atmosphere non existent. Had the Beef Risotto at £32 and my wife , the Smoked Haddock £27. Risotto was only ok, and haddock was overcooked with rubbery skin and not much flavour in rest of dish. Mentioned this to waiter...nothing. With a couple of ok starters, but without drinks, bill was over £90 for 2. This is poor. Having had a couple of great meals in St Ives (Silco and Portmeor Beach Cafe) last weekend, for less money and better on every metric, this was disappointing. Eaten many times at Balmer Lawn in Brickenhurst and quality of food and the experience was much better. Will not be returning to Monty's.

Very slow service, food was underwhelming for the price, celeriac soup didn't taste great. They forgot to add bits to it which people at the other table got. Cheese cauliflower dish was also average. Boiled cauliflower with bechamel sauce rather than cheese. Won't be making it back.

We booked lunch having read about the new head chef at Monty’s Inn (and The Terrace Restaurant). We were extremely disappointed. The whole meal was overpriced and terrible value for money. At £15, the chalkstream trout starter consisted of a few narrow, thin strips on a small plate. Monty’s Inn should be embarrassed to serve such skimpy portions. It was a crime to charge £32, for the slow cooked beef blade bone marrow with saffron risotto & crispy onion! The risotto was bland and didn’t taste fresh. The beef was dry and where was the bone marrow? The staff just went through the motion of serving. The place was soulless and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Do not waste your money here. We cannot recommend Monty’s Inn at the Montague Arms.

Bar restaurant is beautiful....the 3 dogs well looked after. Dad had a starter but it was hunt the trout, not worth £15... Husband enjoyed the burger and dad enjoyed his fish and chips. But, me and my mum found the roast dinner to be average, it was luke warm and the veg cold with very little gravey not worth £25-30 cost. Will not revisit Monty's Inn. We would return to the Montagu Arms restaurant.

Something of nothing. We’d seen great reviews of the food here and as staying down this way decided to try it. Can’t deny the food tasted nice, it was poorly presented, with a lack of care or finesse. Steak, nothing like pictured, just a slab a meat on a plate with a basket of chips - I could have cooked it just as well at home and presented it a lot better. Salmon, just a piece of salmon and a pot of salsa, potatoes substituted for carrots, but just laid on plate. For what you get I would say 30% over priced. Staff not attentive enough, left empty glasses on table even when serving food. A shame, was hoping it would have been a lot better.

The hotel itself is absolutely divine. We went for a pre walk coffee and customer service was excellent. Lovely touches like complimentary mulled wine and sweets! However we went to Monty’s inn for a roast dinner and the meal was very disappointing. My roast came out cold, the waitress offered to ‘re-heat it and returned with the same cold roast on a hot plate. The service was pretty poor, the staff seemed stressed and the food was cold. I’d absolutely not return to the gastro pub but the hotel itself is stunning. They seem like completely different companies.

What a terrible lunch. First, if the menu (a short one, which you would think had been prepared for the day) advertises mackerel, why do you get told after the order that there is no mackerel but they do have bream ? Not as if this was a late sitting and the mackerel had sold out; they must just not have had mackerel! Second, why was the bream smothered in a rather awful pesto clearly straight out of a jar? So overpowering that even after scraping the stuff off, I just couldn’t get rid of the garlicky stench of the fish. Thirdly, how come a butternut squash main is £22, while the bream is £20: where is the market sense in that? Fourth the presentation of sausages wrapped in bacon was frankly quite disgusting, amateur and unpleasant to behold. Finally how come the total bill for two came to £30, yes £30 more than yesterday’s lunch at Chewton Glen? If I am asked why did I not complain, the answer is that having a row is not why I go out for Sunday lunch! Is this trading rather too heavily on the now rather passé Montagu name? Really not worth the effort, much less the price.

Unfortunately my first 2 meal choices from the menu were not available so I had to settle for a simple risotto, so 3 star rating for food is because it's a simple dish. I ordered a dark rum with coke but didn't receive it. When I asked about my drink when my meal arrived I was informed they had no dark rum. Ok, so why wasn't I asked if I wanted something else? They were fairly busy when we arrived so service was slow but this improved when a couple of waiters from the main hotel restaurant came across. I feel sure things would have been better if they hadn't been so busy.

My partner and his son visited yesterday. They ordered 2 food items and 2 drinks - after waiting 40 minutes they enquired how long the food would be. He was then informed the order had not been sent to the kitchen. My partner then cancelled the order and asked for refund. This took another 15 minutes to get a refund because they had to find someone who could do the refund. At no point was an apology made, and still charged for the 2 soft drinks. We can all make mistakes we get that, but to not even offer an apology is something else.

The whitebait were crispy and a good portion for starters. You felt they were not going to scrimp with your food. Excellent fish and chips, in fact the best chips I have had in years. Crisp on the outside and meltingly soft throughout. The fish was fresh and lightly battered in crispy grease free batter. The burger looked good too. Staff were friendly and accommodating, fitting us in early. Good prices for the quality of food. The chef obviously enjoys their calling and the staff made you feel welcome with a bouncy but restrained enthusiasm. Best book as they are rightly busy. Rather too dog friendly for my taste, the dogs were treated like royalty and spaced out to avoid territorial disputes. Faultless really. I ordered chalk stream trout, new potatoes and nicoise salad. When it arrived I did not recognise the slither of fish fillet perched on a pile of gem lettuce leaves. Accompanied by cold potatoes, with the odd French bean. No anchovies etc. When asked, my feedback said it was hardly Ok and I explained why.The waiter listened and did nothing. I believe the description did not meet the trade descriptions act. Then the bill hosted a compulsory 12% service charge not OK. Disappointing experience for our local restaurant.

We booked a table a good few weeks in advance for Sunday lunch. On arrival, after a lovely long walk around Beaulieu, we received a warm welcome, but with the statement that they had been busy and they may have run out of roasts! Immediate disappointment! This was indeed the case and we had to choose from a very limited selection of just 5 alternative dishes. Our drinks service was very slow. The 2 haddock and chips ordered were enjoyed, the Monty burger VERY average, and the cod dish portion rather small. The final issue was being overcharged on the bill (which had to be pointed out and rectified). The pub was full but as people left not one table was cleared down unless the new customers did this. The staff just talked between themselves when the bar was full of empty glasses. This pub is badly managed, if it even has a manager. The bar maid had a dog in her hands when we arrived, she passed it over the bar and then continued to serve us without washing her hands. Same goes for a member of the bar who had a cough, never once did we see her wash her hands. We went in on the Saturday and Sunday and never once were glasses cleared off tables unless the customers did this themselves. Come Sunday lagers, cider and crisps all ran out early afternoon. I certainly would not recommend going her unless it gets a Manager.

We returned to Monty's Inn after a visit earlier in the year. It is a special place for us, as our grandparents met there when stationed in Beaulieu in the 1940s, and talked often of the Montagu Arms. We were looked after brilliantly by the team, who gave special attention to the little one at the table, and we will certainly return in the future. Thank you to all the team for their hard work to make our visit happy and memorable.

Very enjoyable visit with a large family group including a young child who wanted to eat straight away. The team looked after us very well, were super-quick with the children's menu. Good food done with imagination and good drinks. Fantastic location as well. Will be returning.

We decided to go for lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Once Natalie found out it was our anniversary she returned with two glasses of fizz and a card! The food was really good as was the service and the atmosphere. We haven't been here recently (lots of choice locally) but will definitely be back soon. We did buy our friends a voucher for lunch here and they also enjoyed themselves. Special shout out to Lisa and Natalie - thank you!

Been meaning to go here for a long time as often drive passed on a trip to the New Forest. Finally made it for lunch one midweek day - me and my dog. Initial impressions were it was lacking atmosphere. As you go in there is a dining room to the left and a bar area to the right. The bar looked more inviting but I was seated in the dining room. Service was friendly and was offered drinks straight away with time to look through the menu. Dog was given a blanket on the floor and some water which was a really nice touch. I chose a light lunch of mackerel with a side of salad and chips to bulk it out a bit! It was all very nice - salad was huge! I also got a meal off the dog menu for my dog - fish pie I think it was - it was enormous!!!!!!! I had a nice enough time but I felt it really did lack atmosphere and almost felt a bit disorganised or like and after thought to be serving food in this pub/inn. I can’t put my finger on quite what it’s lacking but as it’s fairly high prices I don’t think I’d rush back. The service was very good and I was well looked after. Couldn’t fault that but just something missing atmosphere/decor wise. Give it a go if you’re happy with prices as food is nice enough.

Met a friend for lunch. Very nice ambience. My friend was delayed so we were late ordering but this was fine. Varied menu. We both chose Neil’s mushroom and ricotta tortellini - it was delicious. Good service , all staff seemed happy, helpful and pleased...

We had high expectations about this pub, it was only 5 minute walk from where we were staying in Beaulieu, we came in twice around 4/5pm on a Friday and Sunday for drinks, thought it would be nice to get the feel of the neighbourhood but it was empty, felt soul less. The member of staff that was serving was friendly but unfortunately the whole ambience of the pub was zero. Maybe we came in at the wrong time of day but thought as it was the weekend it would be buzzing. If we stayed in Beaulieu again we would probably try a different time.

On the 30th September 1989 we spent our wedding night at the hotel. The team, the service and the food were outstanding. 34 years later we have returned to have dinner at Monty’s to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Suspect a few faces have changed but...

Went in here at lunch time today for a quick bite. Paid £10 for a Brie and cranberry sandwich with rocket. The rocket was full of grit and had obviously not been washed so I had to give it to my dog! Absolutely awful..

Beautiful Location for a Sunday Roast. Friendly and welcoming service with a smile. Food is beautifully presented, however the roast beef was a disappointment, beef was hard to cut and very chewy. The gravy was watery and tasteless, potatoes felt pre-cooked and reheated almost like from frozen. Veg very al-dente, but great Yorkshire pudding. Desert was a small portion however extremely tasty, both the cheesecake and the crème brûlée are recommended. Paying a premium price for the location not the food, a bit a disappointment.

The gun is an idyllic old pub. Wonderful location, super friendly staff, a real fire and food that's worthy of any top-class restaurant. The only negative is that I don't live near it. Fantastic experience, I highly recommend the gun.

The staff were petty and made me feel ashamed of food allergy and intolerance. Stood behind counter laughing about the situation which was so insulting. Left after trying to order. Will not return here, especially when there are nicer places with kind staff that want custom.
