The Gun Inn in New Forest

We made sure our walk from Lymington to Keyhaven included a bite to eat at The Gun Inn. We had a great welcome from a young gentleman at the bar asking if we wished table service or self service out in the garden, we choose the garden to take advantage of the lovely weather. Local ales/beers are well kept, perfect temperature. Food menu is short but I'd defy anyone not to find something to like on it. Crab baguettes are indulgent for the price but delicious. The gun powder & truffle oil fries almost caused a fight at our table over who ate the last one they are that good!

Ate here today whilst out walking the dog. Although I live fairly close I had fallen out with the place. I am pleased to say that has changed. Menu quite simple but the food we chose was delicious and well presented. The real ales were very good and in good condition my wife said her wine was good too and believe me she is quite fussy. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. Atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The prices were a tad expensive but the venue and staff counter acted that I will happily return and will also recommend to others

Last visited here 20 years ago when it was a bit spit and sawdust type pub full of locals. What a difference! Very Friendly greeting upon arrival was able to get a table to eat which is lucky apparently as you are advised to book Had a very nice chargrilled steak with proper chips!! Would definitely recommend

Hadn't intended to stop in but very glad we stopped in for lunch before heading on to Hurst castle. Nice inside and big beer garden with both shade and sun

Well the manager was amazing! A super welcome and well organised greeting, accommodating us quickly at a lovely table! The menu, we feel is a little limited, with little variation, however the food, when it came was good. A lovely atmosphere in the bar area and convivial feel to the evening! Thank you- as locals we will come more often!

Lovely pub for locals and tourists, loots of seating and nooks & crannies! Excellent outdoor beer garden with a TV for sports. It's a super clean dog friendly pub, run by friendly people. Looking forward to my next visit.

The gun is an idyllic old pub. Wonderful location, super friendly staff, a real fire and food that's worthy of any top-class restaurant. The only negative is that I don't live near it. Fantastic experience, I highly recommend the gun.

Popped in for a lunch drink and had a burger at £20 which I thought was expensive but what a burger worth every penny… lovely beer garden, good grub

Lovely roast this afternoon. The pub was busy, but they managed to give us a table 😀 food was perfect with plenty of well roasted potatoes. 100% worth the 90miles drive. Especially as the key is right outside for a wonderful walk afterwards

I cannot believe the amount of whiney, negative reviews for this fantastic local pub. We turned up with our dog and were made very welcome. The pub was recommended by a local estate agent after we had spent a day viewing properties in this beautiful part of the country. Cannot wait to visit again as local residents and support this great hostelry. 👍

Just what you need after walking to Hurst Castle and back. Service was really good and quick and food was superb! We had a truffle mac and cheese, a chip butty and a pint and would recommend all 3.

Up there with one of the best roasts ever. Best we've found in this area. Book early and try and get in the main pub rather than out the back.

Dog friendly pub with delicious food

You could not ask for a more perfect pub to rest and revive yourself after a long walk in the marshes. Absolutely charming. I only ate a snack—sourdough focaccia—but it was excellent.

Inside of Pub is Old character, however the menu is all "New Cuisine", ie too fancy food with unneccassary fancy sauces and small portions, but Extotionate prices. Menu would be much better if it was a Traditional menu. Also overcharged for drinks.

After being highly recommended we booked for a perfect roast. Unfortunately it was far from perfect the roast potatoes had as much crunch as a soggy wet lettuce and my meal was at best luke warm. It would of also been nice if the plates were delivered all at once but alas they weren’t.

Unfortunately the kitchen was being inspected so there was no food available when we visited. I'm sure it would've been good. The Gun Inn is a lovely pub in a great location with a large car park across the road and good access to waterside and other walks...

Great food,service and beer,what else do you need? The last time I visited The Gun Inn was about 30 years ago and wow, what a difference , i’m really looking forward to returning with my family and friends. Returned for lunch and as with my last visit,my wife and granddaughter had a marvellous time.I didn’t take photos off our meal this time as my wife and granddaughter have a private life,just photos of the beer I enjoyed.

Absolutely fantastic veggie Sunday roast, big enough to split one between two. Friendly staff and gorgeous beer garden as well as charming interior with roaring wood fire. Perfect after a long walk by the sea. Very dog friendly.

Excellent pub. Welcoming friendly staff. Great food. Spacious and well lead out tables. Lovely warm fire in the winter. Can’t fault it.

Great range of beer and whisky's

Asked for a cream tea for two,cost £10 each.We were served a mug of tea,two small scones,prepacked cream and jar of jam.Not value for money,so said we were not happy and recieved a refund.May I suggest you serve cream teas properly,ie a pot of tea and real scones.We enjoyed our cream tea in a cafe on the sea front.

Best Sunday roast!! Both pork and beef came with excellent trimmings and good selection of well cooked vegetables. Service was faultless and cloudy beer v tasty.

Best pub Sunday lunch we have had in years!! Excellent quality food and generous portions. We have booked to go back next week.

Quick lunch…….nice atmosphere on a very grey day, super root veg soup, great seasoned fries, Viognier by the glass(!) and super service from the young tribe on duty. What’s not to like?

Amazing starter of baked Brie. Some mains less impressive: veggie option was v good but sole was overcooked and not as good as a previous visit. Most disappointing was the beef roast - wonderful beef but lukewarm Yorks pudding and potatoes - yet the potatoes with the other dishes were incredibly hot. Really frustrating, espec as the roast was £27. Nice atmosphere and fabulous staff so will defin try it again.

A great old, gastro foodie pub. Nice ales and professional service. Big garden and covered area too.

Food average though I think the chef tries to be too clever with some of the meals/accompaniments, service OK to begin with but then went downhill. Offered dessert, after waiting 15 mins for menu gave up and left. The acoustics are poor, the table next to us was so loud we couldn't hold a conversation.

First time there. Very oldie worldly.

Sunday Roast with an Oktoberfest twist! Great service with laderhosen Okt. festive vibe. Delicious food, warm atmosphere, friendly folk and happy dogs. Cost and comfy… Thank you to all the team.

My wife and I, two crab baguettes, really nice, fresh and super wholemeal baguettes, £33.00 for both and ate them in the lovely, sunny garden. BUT ... absolutely no finesse. Served on white plates, dumped on the table without an offer of salt & pepper, napkins, knife & fork or even a smile. Come on Gun, it was thirty-three quid for two baguettes you must do better than that. I get better service for a bacon sarnie at a cafe in Droitwich for less than a fiver. Just not good enough, really poor.

Fish and chips was sublime. Friendly helpful staff. Lovely family pub. We visited on 28.09.24. Busy lunchtime….but service was slick and professional, really great team!

Love this place, lovely beer garden on a sunny day and tremendous food

Dropped in for a quick drink having not been for a couple of years. What a disappointment to say the least. It’s about as comfortable as my garage in there! Table sticky and hardly anyone in there, you would expect it to be up together if there is nothing happening and the staff are standing around. Zero comfort and no carpet or warmth to the place. Absolutely dismal as you can get. Never going back and I suggest you don’t either.

This was a lovely pub to go to after a nice long walk. We had baguettes which were very tasty, also very much recommend the chips. The staff here are so friendly and helpful. Can see why it is so popular.

Our extended family of 8 plus dog stayed in Keyhaven for 5 days and visited the Gun Inn on a few occasions for drinks and also food Staff very friendly and attentive .. great service and the food was amazing So happy that this great pub was on our doorstep

Stopped for a drink during a long and hot hike. Friendly staff, good selection of drinks, they very kindly refilled our water bottles. Should have stayed for food, but we will next time

Stopped for a drink, beer and service good though drinks are expensive . Never been in such a cold unwelcoming pub little thought given to the customers comfort, no soft furnishings to be found . At these prices I expect to be at least warm and comfortable.

Popped in while passing. Friendly staff allowed a free tasting of the real ale before purchasing. A lovely touch. Then spent an hour in the beer garden listening to the birds singing. Will definitely return when in the area. Drinks only, can't comment on the food.

Fantastic pub. Very tasty food. The best chips I've ever eaten Great atmosphere with very personable staff. Very large beer garden with an outside bar to purchase drinks and order food. Outside area has massive covered tented area, which is good for hot weather also has heating for colder days. They have live music events too The pub was very clean. We will be back Highly recommend this pub

Also highly recommended by Jay at Oslar Coffee Shop ( Barton on Sea) and several other holidaymakers who had visited. So we just had to give it a try. EXCELLENT ESTABLISHMENT, the warmest welcome, super efficient and friendly staff who went above and beyond to make it a great experience, SUPERB DELICIOUS FOOD, and despite some people saying it was a bit pricey we felt that it was such great quality that it was worth it. Tastiest Crab Baguette with chunky delicious beef dripping chips and the special Gunpowder Burger OMG , the best meal we’ve had since arriving at Milford on Sea, why did it take us 5 days to go ? We absolutely enjoyed every single morsel of our lunch. THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL PUB , super staff and FABULOUS FOOD. If we travel to the area again WE WILL BE BACK TO THE GUN INN . 😍😍

After walking the Lymington to Keyhaven trail, The Gun Inn was a welcomed end to our walk. We sat in the garden - there is ample space, even when busy. Food and drinks can be ordered in the garden and the food came promptly. I had the Halloumi Burger and my wife had the Catch of the day. Both were equally lovely plates of food. The chips are just right and a must! One thing we did notice was that the price was relative to other places and not inflated due to location. Thank you, we had a lovely lunch.

We stopped here for drinks only, the staff were very friendly & helpful. It’s dog friendly and they have a lovely garden to chill in.

Lovely food: fresh fish and nice selection of red wine. Staff friendly and lovely rustic feel to pub. Great beer garden with open and sheltered area. Only reason didn't give 5 stars is car park opposite pub is £4 to park for 2 hours which i feel is too much. Think it council owned.

Nice, but a little over priced.

Really nice pub - large area out back with benches and tables and a satellite bar in addition to the one I side and it's dog friendly. The food was great and the service prompt and down to earth. I met family there and it was a really nice friendly down earth atmosphere.

Have been to The Gun a few times & am adding a new review as it’s some time since last review. Booked a table beforehand. Warmly greeted & shown to our table by the young & professional staff. Order for drinks & food taken at table. Steak & catch of the day all explained to us. Food served in a timely fashion & very nicely presented. We had 3 burgers & one chicken kebab. All were excellent, especially the chicken which was perfectly cooked & plentiful in portion size. As it was a nice day we moved outside for deserts & coffee. This was all dealt with efficiently with our “tab” moving to outside table. When outside you order at serving hatch with food then served to your table. Puddings were delicious. It wasn’t until we were on our way home that we realised that service charge hadn’t been added to the bill. Next visit we will ensure we do as service throughout our visit was excellent.

Fantastic Pub I was really impressed with the quality of food and range on the menu. Some really interesting takes on some classics. I had a crab baguette, beautiful flavour and we had sides of Asian slaw and kimchi both were excellent and washed down with a lovely pint of Guinness

Really good sandwiches (we had the cran sandwich and the roast beef sandwuch) had these with fries covered in truffle oil. The Asian slaw was amazing. Recommend.

We took a family bike ride from Lymington along the coastal path and had booked lunch here for the 4 of us! We had the bikes so sat out front (forgot our bike lock! 🤦‍♀️). The team were so welcoming! The kids menu was fairly predictable but when we asked for smaller portions of the adult menu they couldn’t be more accommodating! The seafood was amazing, and the beautiful focaccia and a spicy Bloody Mary dip was delicious! Would recommend and return without hesitation! Great food and even better value for money for the quality seafood served! They’ve got something special here! Garden was also really beautiful, so will sit there next time!

Great vibe and friendly staff but lunch was a let down. Very little choice of sandwiches and lighter meals so we chose "mature cheddar cheese and pickle baguette" It was more like a pickle baguette- far too much. Couldn't taste the cheese, which was certainly not mature cheddar! Just a mild pre- sliced and very thin excuse for a cheese. Bread nice enough but disappointing meal.

when you ask for chips make sure you ask for less salt they are very salty

This is a really good pub. Food and atmosphere always good - have been eating here for a few years and I think they do a good job. Service is always profesisonal and the food is good quality and well presented. They seem to have gone quite Korean at their last menu change - which is fine, but I would dearly love the pork belly starter back :)

Very busy, so staff understandably rushed off of their feet. We ordered chips and a cream tea as it was 45 mins to an hour wait for food so thought we would grab something quick to eat with a pint. Lovely garden, lovely area with fantastic beach walks.

This was our first time at The Gun in Keyhaven. Food was lovely and very reasonably priced .Very nice and relaxed atmosphere. But I’ve got to say the waitress Lottie was very bubbly and friendly. Couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming. Nothing was a problem .She is a credit to the company. Will definitely be returning. Next time with friends ! Can’t recommend enough.

We went just for drinks. It is a very nice pub with lots of history behind it. We liked it very much. We were served promptly and headed to the back garden which was really good. We enjoyed our stay as it wasn't very busy, just a few tables but we all were in a quiet distance. It has a different ambience inside and outside. Very close to the sea from where to walk, ride a bike, walk the dog or just sail the boat.

Great location for starting or finishing a costal walk. There is a reduced menu early in the week but the fish & chips were fantastic the beer garden is really pleasant so are the staff....highly recommend this pub

Lovely pub food served in a friendly atmosphere. Fresh fish and tasty poke bowl with chicken. Wicked chips in beef dripping. A naughty treat. Would definitely return for the food and the welcome.

I visited earlier with my family and was surprised to see any negative reviews. We shared haddock and chips. It was a good sized portion, which was delicious and arrived at our table very quickly. The garden was wonderful, it was nicely presented with a nice atmosphere and plenty of space for our 2 year old to run around. The bartender was friendly and professional too! Would visit again!
