After reading mostly positive reviews we had high hopes for the pub. However, we were left disappointed. There is no atmosphere in the pub & we didn’t feel particularly welcomed. The waiting staff were polite & friendly enough. Unfortunately, the meal wasn’t great, not very flavoursome & the steak was very over-cooked. It was a bit of a let down after having high expectations.

This beautiful old pub is a hidden gem. I went with my mate for a couple of pints earlier this week on a damp & dreary eve; we made a roaring fire (the landlord allowed us to freely gather wood from his store), sat by it and drank some of the night away with tasty local ale & some Islay whisky. It's a bit like stepping back in time. I've also eaten here on quite a few occasions for Sunday lunch & I've never had a bad experience. It's also dog-friendly, which suits us just fine (we left our dog-lead at the pub a while back & they kept it safe for us to collect). Honestly, this old, quirky place is a dying breed of traditional English pubs and should be supported as much. Not only does it bestow a sense of community, it's a great place to sit near the fire, play board games, or eat local food if you so desire. Definitely recommended for an experience.

Avoid this place at all costs! Food is overpriced and bland. Cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. Toilets are disgusting and the garden is overgrown and unloved. On the day we went there was no local wine (yet the village’s vineyard and its owner are literally 200 yards down the road), no orange juice, no crisps and no nuts! What pub doesn’t have a ready supply of crisps and nuts?! Food hygiene rating purportedly has gone up from 2 to 4 but in all honesty, you’d never know and if it’s not 5, is it actually good at all? Oh, and the new landlord is very rude We’ve been visiting this pub for over 20 years and the previous landlord/lady had it running like a dream. The garden was beautifully maintained and the place was buzzing, particularly for Sunday lunches and those famous giant Yorkshire puddings. We were always welcomed with the best hospitality but I can’t see this place lasting much longer if none of the above aren’t improved. So sad to see it this way

Booked for a Sunday lunch with our sons who were down for a family birthday and we were not disappointed. Hadn't been for a year or two, but we were pleased to see that standards were as high as ever. Friendly staff, roaring fire and excellent food. We like a good selection of vegetables and that is what you get here with very generous portions of meat and a home-cooked Yorkshire! No 'Aunt Bessie's' here!!! They don't offer a starter on a Sunday and with the size of the main course you don't need it and we were too full to think about dessert. This is a local, family-run pub in a beautiful old building at the heart of a village and long may it continue to be so.

... But this is one of the best pubs I've ever been too. I wish this was my local. The Sunday lunch was a lovely hearty affair washed down with a delightful Jail Ale. Staff were very friendly. Both the interior and exterior are historically beautiful; a vintage black pub sign with gold lettering, antiques, photos of the past etc. Pubs like these are essentially museums too; reminding us of a simpler time when the pub was the heart of the community. This is a five star review but my only humble recommendation would be to have one or two more cask ales as when we arrived there were only two on offer. Then it really would be the best pub in the world!

Sadly if you read other reviews you will see the owner of this pub is aggressive and childish. Please take a few moments to read the many awful replies he has made to his customers. As to the meal, the steak was poor quality but the meal was cheap so I’d have not passed comment on it however the chips were clearly not cooked, as could easily be ascertained by tasting or cutting into them. A pity but as the meal issues wouldn’t have rated a negative review had the owner/landlord or whatever he thinks he is been civil. Your comments show you clearly for what you are, rude, aggressive and out of your depth. Any person looking at these reviews can easily see that. A pity for the rest of the staff who obviously try. Avoid eating/drinking here as any slight issue will be so badly handled as to ruin your night.

Last week eight of us visited the Tuckers Arms for an early evening drink to celebration a major birthday of four of our friends. It was early evening and didn’t appear very busy but on approaching the bar we were ignored for some minutes before the barman acknowledged us and said he would serve us after sorting drinks for restaurant customers. When he finally took our orders there was no apology for the wait and no greeting of any kind. There was only one real ale on but when the barman tried to pull a pint there was just air coming out and no beer. He called for help and the landlord came over and then returned after sorting the issue but again no apology or acknowledgement .Other members of our party wanted cider or blush wine but these were not available plus it was not possible to have a large wine as the pub only had medium wine glasses. Whilst the drinks orders were being dealt with we asked if we could move chairs around near the pubs back door entrance to the garden and were told it was not an issue. After a few minutes the landlord appeared and seemed very unhappy we had moved chairs. He slammed a chair down out of the way and continued to rant about the exit being blocked and when we explained the furniture was already in that position he said “ I’m the landlord and I am due some respect”. Our special evening was totally ruined by an unpleasant experience mainly caused by the landlord’s attitude . It’s a lovely old pub but these days people expect more than beams and history. There is much competition for customers these days and people will only go and spend money where they feel they are appreciated and their custom is valued which appears is not the case at the Tuckers Arms. We will go elsewhere from now on.

Thank you so much for an absolutely wonderful Sunday lunch. Everything was perfect from the fluffy yorkshires, delicious stuffing balls, yummy roasties , succulent meats together with the perfect medley of vegetables. The deserts were scrumptious too. Additionally your customer service was second to none . Right from when we were greeted to when we left. One of my friends visiting from London said she was really impressed with the standard of food & customer service. She eats in Michelin star places & she said The Tuckers Arms was just as good! We so wish we had discovered you before. We have been so disappointed with many restaurants in Devon as I explained. We were so pleased with everything. So thank you everyone for the perfect ending to our weekend. There's not enough room on this page to write more complements but I really could! 👏💜

Last wk a party of 8 of us visited the tuckers for a celebratory drink for 4 of our friends big birthdays . On arrival the barman did not acknowledge us at the bar for a few minutes when he said , I’ll be with you in a few minutes . So no welcome at all ! Meanwhile whilst I stayed at the bar along with 2 others the others in our party asked the barman if we could move a couple of chairs to a table by the back door to accommodate all 8 of us , he said that was fine .so 2 chairs were moved to the table . The barman eventually asked us what drinks we wanted , when asked for the 1 real ale available the barman couldn’t actually extract any beer from hand pump & had to call the landlord for assistance ! Meanwhile no cider available & when I asked for a large glass of blush wine the barman looked very puzzled looking at the bar then said , what’s that then !!! When I told him it was a wine he then said he hadn’t got any . I plumped for a large glass of rose wine but was then told that I couldn’t have that as there were only medium wine glasses available , quite unbelievable !!! The landlord eventually sorted the hand pump issue , not apologising at all for the delay & then proceeded to be very unpleasant when he demanded that we moved the chairs as he said they were blocking the emergency exit. When 2 of my friends said that the barman had said it was ok to move those chairs the landlord became verbally abusive & quite frankly unpleasant . He said ‘ I’m the landlord it’s my pub & im due some respect ‘ utterly unbelievable behaviour ! ! What was meant to be a special celebration was just ruined by an arrogant rude disrespectful person , namely the landlord ! If you want a warm welcome , nice ale & chilled wine , service with a smile , DON’T visit ‘The Tuckers’ Will we not be returning .

One of the best meals we've had in a long time! Absolutely fantastic - high quality food, LOTS of food (they do not scrimp 😂) and great drinks too. The staff were lovely and very accommodating to us. Just down the road is a gorgeous little river and bridge - so so scenic. The baby changing, however, is not easy and this needs to be thought about as I really struggled changing my 1 year old on a narrow bathroom floor. That said, it didn't take away from the truly lovely experience we had here and would come again and again and again because the food was so brilliant.

My wife and I, plus our 2 kids and a dear elderly friend came for Sunday lunch, and we weren’t disappointed. My wife being a coeliac, she has to lead a gluten free lifestyle, and to put her mind at rest, the chef came out to see her and make sure what she was getting was a totally gf meal. Dalwood is a quintessential English village: pretty and charming. The countryside is easy to get out into for walks. Pub is the same, thatched and how everyone expects a pub to be. Friendly and helpful staff. Meals were very good, but no wine list ("two red, two white" ) But it is a pub, and not a hotel (it may have been our mistake to expect otherwise). Our room was quite small and the only window was in the ceiling, no bedside tables for spectacles, water glasses, phone etc,and nothing to sit on other than the bed. The bathroom was rather tired and worn.

I understand it is under new management but it was more than obvious they were not ready to provide a full service. We were not the only customers a little shocked. Without a starter we opted to share a main course of Lobster that would be a light starter, sadly they were unable to accommodate us in fact they couldn't even tell us what wine they had. I do wish them every success just find it sad that we were looking forward to the evening especially as the place was recommended. What a beautiful little hidden country pub! Visited here as a couple recently, booked in as we heard it was advisable due to current pandemic. Food was absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Started of with a Cornish larger, we had rump steak and hake for mains, cannot fault it was delicious. My partner is a huge steak eater & it was cooked to perfection. The garlic bread is a must, so different and tasty. We finished with creme brûlée (my first one ever) and pancakes, apart from having such stuffed bellies the food was amazing. Price was excellent & worth every penny. Staff was friendly & accommodating. Definitely worth a visit!

The service was very friendly and nothing was too much. The chef even sourced some BBQ sauce for our little one. The food came out quick, hot and tasty. The pies were amazing and the fish was fresh and yummy. Highly recommend.

Went there Saturday night with my friend, food was quickly served and tasted delicious. Service was lovely too and everyone really did their best considering there's so much rubbish going on in the world right now. Staff were so upbeat and atmosphere was really nice. Don't have anything bad to say at all - will definitely be visiting again! Thank you so much Tuckers Arms for such a nice evening!

If you read my previous review, you'd notice that there was a slight glitch in the service I received, which was something I hadn't expected.I tried to make the owners aware of the issue, via email and direct message via Tripadvisor, but to no avail, so ended up resorting to snail mail. I received a superb response from Tracey McGowan, who went far above and beyond any reasonable expectation to resolve my issue. To that end, my wife and I returned for Sunday lunch and had one of the best Sunday Roasts in a long time. It was lovely to see a slow cooked beef and a rare beef option on the menu and, for my taste buds, the only thing I could possibly ask for is that they do a slow roast Brisket, as that's my favourite.Great to see a super pub quickly return to top form... not that they dropped very far and we will be back soon.

I discovered the Tuckers Arms on Trip Advisor as was looking for somewhere to eat on a Monday evening. What a great find! Amazing historic pub with loads of character. Our table was right next to the Inglenook fireplace which was lovely. Very good choice of food and superb service made for a lovely evening. So impressed, we went back to explore the countryside around Dalwood the next day which was lovely. Highly recommended!

We booked the restaurant for an evening meal on Sunday whilst we were staying in the area. We were met at the door and the current covid arrangements for dining were explained and the restaurant are NHS track and trace compliant with a QR code on each table. It is an typical country Inn with a thatched roof and parking is OK but limited on the front car park, but you can park on the road. The staff were excellent and explained the menu, we both chose the beef Sunday roast and I have to say it was easily the best pub Sunday roast I've had. Meat was tender and great selection of vegetables, portions were good and we were both stuffed but did manage a pudding which again was excellent.Overall a lovely place and great food, with excellent staff and highly recommended.

We went for lunch as a family. Given the COVID circumstances we thought the welcomer and service were very good. The menu looked interesting, and we had been primed that fish was a speciality. One of us had a very nice meal, but I had a very disappointing dish in which the flavours clashed horribly and the fish was very over cooked. We would give it a second chance though because of the setting and the friendly staff.

THE best roast I have ever eaten! I went with my son on the last night of our walking weekend and were looking at the menu when the lovely waitress said they had a roast beef on offer which we both chose. I had a the crab and prawn starter which was excellent. But then the roast turned up and it was simply delicious with a large selection of veg all which tasted equally delicious especially the cauliflower cheese. My son had a desert and chose the cherry jam and almond sponge pudding with vanilla ice cream. The whole meal was absolutely fantastic. Great service and good ales. Can not recommend this place enough. The whole meal came to £61 with the roast costing £15 each. It is a rare find and I would recommend people go out of their way to find this lovely pub. In terms of Covid they were fully compliant with scanning your app on your phone with QR code.

A little disappointed in the choice on the menu staff were very pleasant and attentiveness but disappointed with the over all meal pork belly more fat than meat and veg a mix of frozen and fresh and meals that dont stand out not some thing I would rave about. Nice to sit outside with slight heating but the chairs and table made it a very uncomfortable meal to eat. Value of meal was ok but dont expect your change to be returned to make it your own dicission to tip as that choice was made by staff with not receiving back the difference of 6.90 it was just taken so for us it's a 6 out of 10 on this visit not likely to recommend to others

Stayed in Axminster for a week and ate here twice during our stay. Pre booked our table. In a party of 4 adults, all have lovely food on both visits, all had different meals on both occasions. I have a diary intolerance and they had a vegan cheese cake and ice cream on the menu which is definitely worth a 6 hour drive for alone. Orange marmalade served with a chocolate creme brûlée desert was delicious if only the chef would sell in a jar! Child friendly too with a choice of food for children on request. Would highly recommend a visit here. We will be going back!

Amazing food eaten at this lovely local restaurant! We had the Xmas menu this time around and it was great, fantastic decor and the front of house team made sure we felt welcomed from the first moment to the last. Credit to Jess and her family, would highly recommend

Came here for lunch with friends on a Friday. Parking wasn’t easy - had to park down the road and walk back. We reserved for 1.30 since they close the kitchen at 2pm. We had a lovely welcome and a nice quiet table. Excellent beer with Timothy Taylors and very good selection of food. We had Liver and Onion, Seabass fillet and Bely of Pork plus a wine or beer each. The quality and quantity was excellent and good value @<£25 each. Fully recommend
