We live quite locally to the Trout and have had ups and downs with change in management over the years. The pub itself is beautiful and the location is idyllic being riverside by the Thames. The potential is enormous but sadly the food was terrible. I booked a Sunday lunch online for my son's 25th birthday with a clear message that this was a special lunch (he has autism and was so looking forward to this celebration). Our booking was for noon. When we arrived the staff were friendly and efficient. One of my sons and I decided to have the 'Great British Sunday Roast' (it sounded so good) with my son choosing the pork with apple sauce and I chose the chicken. My other son chose the burger. We waited around 45 - 60 minutes to receive our food. No water offered but we finally got one of the staff's attention and got some water (half way through the meal). Belly of West End Farm pork, baked apple sauce 21.95 This was fatty, as expected, and tasteless. The gravy looked and tasted like a shiny Bisto pre-made gravy. The potatoes tasted, and had the texture of pre-cooked and frozen roast potatoes that had been sitting under a heated light for a while. Awful. There was NO apple sauce with the meal. Castlemead Farm chicken, sage and onion sausage stuffing, bread sauce 19.95 This too was... awful. The smell of the gravy (which was the exact same Bisto gravy that was used with the pork) was so strong and nauseating. The presentation was poor with the plate swimming in this Bisto gravy, potatoes (as above) pre-cooked and warmed up, a small spoonful of some sort of squash that was drowned in the gravy, a large Yorkshire pudding that was rubbery and tasteless, was plonked on top. The chicken was half a breast with bone and a tiny wing... it was unsightly, smelled awful and the predominant taste was a beef Bisto gravy that was so overpowering I felt sick. We paid and left as my son (who has autism) was stressed. I did not complain as it was his birthday and that would have upset him. Please don't call it the 'Great British Sunday Roast' as that meal wouldn't have qualified as the worst school dinner. How difficult is it to cook a Sunday roast?? I have since read other reviews (I wish I had read them before booking!) and I've seen that the general manager has answered with good intentions to get things right. They haven't... what a shame as it was a huge waste of money and disappointment all round.

Food was an absolute joke! Was charged £15 for 2 x10cm long pieces of battered fish in a bun...there was more mayonnaise and relish than fish...The service was awfull..v rude when i questioned the portion size and unwelcoming from the get go...You will literally get better quality and portion size at a macdonalds or burger king!! Dreadful service (food arrived promptly but we had to find a staff member to ask for menu and pay the bill), then service added. Food mediocre (2 small pieces of chicken in the Caesar salad and soggy croutons), coffee was fine though. Great location and beautiful walks nearby but the service and food quality not good, such a shame.

We have stayed here before 3 years ago and loved it, so returned for a break away between Christmas and New year. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights but changed our plans and only stayed for one (which we were pleased about in the end). Firstly on a positive, the food is delicious, we had both supper and breakfast and no complaints here! We stayed in a superior suite with a sofa bed for the kids. The room is nicely decorated and the roll top bath lovely. There are however several issues within the room that need sorting ASAP. The sofa bed is so old and uncomfortable with springs sticking out that all 4 of us ended up in the King size bed. The TV in the bedroom however stopped working over night and the flush on the loo broke. There is obviously something wrong with the boiler in the room as it was unbearably hot. Fortunately there is a balcony in the room, so we were able to sleep with the door open, but obviously this shouldnt be necessary as it was December. Also for some reason when the heating is on, the water from the cold tap is warm, which proved tricky as we had our dog with us, and he soon finished the bottle of mineral water provided. Eventually I used cooled water from the kettle left out on the balcony for the dog. The room was very well priced and so we weren't expecting 5 star standard, but some fundamentals that need rectifying ASAP. I did explain a few of the issues to the manager on leaving but felt to embarrassed to explain all of the problems as there were so many! She was apologetic however. It is a shame, as we like the Butcombe group.

We booked Sunday lunch for five plus three children. An excellent meal, special child menu that featured miniature versions of the adult roasts. Makes a change from them always being offered sausage and chips! The adult roasts were very generous and piping hot, good value at under £20. Friendly staff (Danni) saw to our high chair needs and provided crayons and colouring for the children.

Stayed for a three night break with the purpose of visiting Oxford and surrounding area. Friendly welcome on arrival; shown to our room which was spacious and well decorated. Ate in the pub on two nights. Excellent choices on the menu. Both nights we ate very well, quality of food was high. Service was efficient and very friendly. With a hearty selection for breakfast this pub offers excellent value for money. Throughout our visit the staff were friendly and affable. Will certainly look to stay in one of their sister hotels.

I parked up at the Trout as it's a beautiful spot, yesterday afternoon. We took the dogs for a walk, unfortunately on the walk we disturbed a wasp nest; my daughter, myself and the dog were quite badly stung. We returned to the Trout as we had intended for a drink, but also needed some thing else. I asked for a cream tea/cakes/pudding and was told bluntly that they didn't do cream teas nor cakes and wouldn't do a pudding as the kitchen had shut an hour ago. So I just ordered drinks. But I gave it one last try and asked if they had any sting cream/ antihistamine that we could use. They didn't! Then they asked why, I explained and they said " That would hurt". End of discussion. To be clear my daughter and I weren't in any danger, probably mildly in shock but in a fair bit of pain, Also to be clear they were not busy, in fact we were the only people in the bar with 3 behind. So to summarize, totally lacking in politeness and hospitality with no hint of basic human kindness.

We came to the Trout for a wedding party for my niece. The venue is idyllic with the river and bridge as the backdrop for the tepee-like tent which housed us for the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. The staff were excellent. Very efficient but managed to blend in. Never had to wait for a drink at the bar and the food arrived at the same time. The food needs a special mention as it was outstanding. We all agreed it was the best food we've ever had at a wedding and the chef is clearly very talented. We had such a good time and will definitely be coming back for a weekend visit some time soon.

Last minute decision to grab dinner somewhere, and decided on The Trout at Tadpole. Wonderful location, and generally good food. Waiting staff can sometimes be a little dower, and uninterested. I had Sweet pea and mint tortelloni, whipped feta, salsa verde, pangritata. Portion looked terribly small for £14.95, could almost have been a starter. Disappointingly, the food was dry on the surface. It looked very much as if the plate had been left too long on the heated gantry before it went out for service. I didn’t complain but will definitely bring it up next time. The dish was very tasty in spite of being slightly dehydrated on top. My friend has the beef burger, maple and bacon relish, smoked Cheddar, mustard aioli, crispy onions, skin-on-fries. Cost £16.50. His dish was perfect and was a decent size main. I’ve been here quite a number of times, and do find that the portions can be a little on the small side.

The restaurant and surrounding area are beautiful, location is good. The food...meh, and overpriced. It's fine but not worth the money. I ordered the salad which turned out to be a pile of tomatoes with a bit of rocket, a bit of parsley and some cottage cheese. My husband had a ploughman's, but we've had better for less money! The staff were lovely and efficient, and overall it was a nice lunch, but absolutely not worth what we paid.

I have often driven past this pub and marvelled at its beauty from the outside, however that’s where the good points end. The food is poor and the service is around the same. Don’t get me wrong the staff are friendly but about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. We were given desserts with no cutlery, which then turned out that my dessert was raw and my husbands wasn’t even what he had ordered. The flat iron steak didn’t have any garlic butter as advertised, the burger was incredibly bland. This was a rare night where we had a babysitter for a treat and we left thoroughly disappointed. Save your money, it’s a Wetherspoons in disguise but extortionately expensive.

A sunny Saturday lunchtime and The Trout was on our list of places to visit - mainly cos of the name and as we weren't sure when we'd arrive, the fact that food was served until 3pm! Pleasant location by the river- also right by quite a busy road - and plenty of tables and space in the garden. Having hunted down a menu we were just looking through it when told by a waitress that - 'If you're thinking of having food you can't as we're not serving walk ins'. Well, if you're busy and that's the situation then fine but there are ways of saying it without being so unwelcoming - like, ' You're very welcome to enjoy a drink but unfortunately and I'm really sorry about this, we're really busy today and only serving food to customers who've booked'. All the serving staff looked pretty fed up and smiles and cheery comments were noticeable by their absence.Drinks were pricey as wellThink there are plenty of better plaices around than the Trout.....

Popped in for lunch after a lovely circular walk starting and finishing at the pub. Disappointing that there is no lunch menu so went for a starter each. The duck terrine was good, but £9 for a minuscule amount of beetroot, goats cheese and rocket with a drizzle of balsamic glaze and some sugared hazelnuts was shockingly overpriced. Nice location which I guess draws the crowds to enable them to charge such prices. Main courses looked more substantial but next time it will be a packed picnic by the river for us and maybe a drink at the pub afterwards.

Only disappointment was the Porn Star martini cocktail. Very poor presentation with a lack of passion fruit on the surface nor the traditional shot of Prosecco ☹️

We walked here for nearly 2 hours, with 2 children. We'd been told the food was good. The menu was difficult to understand as the prices weren't all on show. See photo. This is tricky with young children as you don't want to spend a fortune on something they may not eat. The descriptions were also pretty sparse. The chips were straight out of a bag, the 'house bread' was a toasted pitta (which when we asked, they said that is the house bread) . The mussels with 'crusty bread' came out without any bread at all. When we asked we were given a toasted brioche bun which was most certainly not homemade. I'd be more than happy if they said when we ordered that they had run out of bread... But they tried to avoid giving us any bread which just felt really dishonest. I wouldn't order a meal thst was described as having crusty bread if I knew there wasn't any bread! The waitress seemed super moody and didn't want to be there. Certain things we asked for didn't turn up but they still tried to charge for them. For a 100 pound bill it was all very disappointing. After considering an 80 person party at this venue, this lunch was enough to convince us not to book anything else or to ever return again.

Poor service is the override comment we were directed to a dingy table in what was probably the public bar, then ignored.

The trout is in an amazing location, right by the river and certainly has the potential to be a "must go to" pub. As locals, we have a variety of choices and we have been to the Trout once or twice a year. Each time its been a little hit and miss. Earlier this summer, it was very good and we dined outside for lunch choosing a plethora of dishes. This time it was a Sunday and it was clear that the team work very hard to manage a busy schedule with both walk-ins from the Thames path and booked diners. It has always struggled with getting the staffing levels just right and again we were let down by how busy it was and also a lack of attention to detail (e.g. dead flowers on the tables, crumbs on seats). We had booked in advance for a family sunday lunch and though the food was very good and varied (burgers for the kids, roasts for adults) the puddings arrived cold and after the ordered coffees. Our waitress was polite and attentive though she was obviously stretched with having to work across a large bar and eating areas and we could see plates piling up waiting to be collected. This may have been a one off but we remember also being let down in the past which is a real shame as the food is actually very good. Come on Trout you can do better! I would still recommend the pub but perhaps on an evening rather than Sunday lunchtime as i think they would be less run off their feet. In the summer its a great location (we paddled there from up stream!) and lots of space for kids to run around in safety.

Excellent evening at the Trout last Sunday - service was great, the food even better. Not crowded at, so social distancing etc not a problem. Would have been nice to have more than one vegetarian option on the menu, but the one on offer was superb. The meat-eaters were very happy too.

Visited here twice in two days. Once for a drink and once for early evening meal. Staff friendly and welcoming. The selection of beers and other drinks looked good. The cider I had was good. The grounds and outside area a re lovely for sitting. You can sit close to the canal if you wish.My second visit was for a meal. I had a tasty but small chicken and ham pie on a bed of mash potato with greens and broccoli, topped with a tasty gravy. I had a large glass of merlot to drink with it. I did not have a starter or a dessert. The service was good. The pie was very much overpriced at £15.50. I would suggest £10 at the most. The large glass (250ml) of Montes Merlot was very good, but at £10.20 per glass, again, very much overpriced. (You can get a bottle of it for about £10.) £7.50 would have been a reasonable price. I added a 10% discretionary service charge, making £28.27 altogether. Sorry, but never again. The food is good but not that good for that price. Same with the wine. Never again for food, maybe though for a summer time drink.

We rounded off a recent trip to the Cotswolds, with an overnight stay at The Trout at Tadpole Bridge. Everything began really well. We were offered a choice of rooms by a hospitable member of staff, which were clean and furnished to a good standard. Later, we enjoyed a couple of drinks in the large, beautiful garden, while soaking up the last of the warm afternoon sunshine. Later in the evening, in the restaurant, we had an absolutely outstanding dinner, which was full of flavour and beautifully presented. The waiting staff were attentive and charming, and the meal was a perfect end to our break in the Cotswolds. However, the next morning, it was like waking up in a different hotel! My wife showered, but when I attempted to use it, the water supply was off. I had to wait for around twenty minutes until the water supply was restored. Not a good start. We went down to breakfast at 9.00 and ordered a pot of coffee, which the waitress brought to our table. She then returned after around 20 minutes, to take our order for a cooked breakfast. At 09.50 our breakfast arrived, after what seemed like an unreasonably long delay. Maybe they were short staffed, due to the difficulties being experienced in the hospitality sector, but there was no apology or explanation from the staff. There was one other table occupied by four ladies, who had been waiting as long as us to be served, and one of them explained to the staff that they had a taxi booked for 10.00, as they had a train to catch. Unfortunately, they had to leave before their cooked breakfast arrived. We really enjoyed our stay at the Trout, but it was let down by our negative experience at breakfast.N.B. There appears to be two separate listings on Trip Advisor for 'The Trout At Tadpole Bridge' and 'The Trout at Tadpole Bridge'. They are both the same place!

We had eaten here previously and were looking forward to enjoying another meal. The prices are high, especially the wine which was ordinary, at best. The starters we chose were simple and were tasty and well presented. However, the mains if Barnsley chop and river trout were a disappointment. The chop was tough and stringy. The trout itself was well cooked but the potatoes in the sauce were almost raw. This was mentioned to the waitress but there was no apology or response of any kind. The mooring is very neglected and border line dangerous. All in all not a pleasant evening.

We dropped in here for lunch with London based friends, mainly due to a muddle with a similarly named pub/restaurant not far away!Pleasant surroundings; slightly limited menu for vegetarians; even more limited beer choice; and erratic service. All made up for an OK experience, but not enough to tempt us to return.

I’d reserved a table, online for a Saturday afternoon treat with friends. We arrived to find no table reserved for us but no big deal as there were bench tables in the garden. So we got our menus and sat in the garden. Table service due to C-19 which is obviously fair enough. 40 minutes later we left after what felt like being totally ignored. What a shame.

I chose the crab and mac and cheese, which sounded delicious, unfortunately i got a bowl of pasta in a thin tasteless liquid, no cheese or crab. the salad was a radish sliced and a sprig of parsley for £17. My partner had roast beef, which was 2 slices, a third of which was fat and the thinnest gravy i have seen for £21. Then had the discretionary service charge on the bill. I was so disappointed, i wont be going back.

I visited the beer garden with a drink for a friend having not been before. The location is stunning and the pub also looked warm and inviting. Unfortunately the staff were the opposite. We went inside to get a drink where there was 1 single person serving drinks and a lot of customers waiting. The staff are young and experienced and it really shows. Once we had our drinks we went out to the garden and relaxed. Our relaxation didn’t last long when we saw a member of staff (looked like the manager) run across the beer garden in pursuit of some customers. It appeared the staff member was angry as the customer said he was going to leave a negative review after the poor service. The member of staff was very aggressive and was taller than the customer, he was being intimidating by standing over him and jumping around. He was shouting loudly and when the customer said he wanted to be left alone and walked off this member of staff still carried on and went after him shouting. I was concerned the situation may escalate and felt uncomfortable. Everyone in the beer garden including ourselves witnessed this and I was shocked that this is the kind of response a customer would receive should they make any kind of complaint or be dissatisfied. Shameful behaviour and I definitely won’t be visiting again.

We visited this establishment twice - the first time for a meal, in which the chips were burnt and the dessert cold. We decided to persevere by trying a drink outside there later in the week, as the location is beautiful. Unfortunately this was a decision we would regret. On the tables outside, it provides a QR code to order drinks online, which we did. Twenty minutes passed so I chased the order at the bar and the bartender apologised it had been missed and promised he would bring it out straight away. A further 15 minutes passed, so we chased again. Lots of nonsense excuses followed and we eventually received no drinks but a refund and prepared to leave. Completely unexpectedly the manager chased us out into the garden and said any negative review we might leave would be tantamount to threatening him. He became extremely agitated and jumpy. There were raised voices and intimidating behaviour displayed in full view of families in the beer garden. What a fiasco - a disgrace to the owners of this beautiful establishment. Please avoid or admire the view with a picnic from the other side of the river bank!

As I'm working in the area for a few months, having driven past the Trout a couple times I wanted to try it. Went on a Wednesday evening and was led to the nice beer garden. I asked if we could sit close to the water but was told they couldn't take food that far. Whilst I found that a little amusing at first, I could understand as there were a fair few people around and perhaps would be a challenge to offer service at distance. We sat under the gazebo and ordered some drinks which took about ten minutes to arrive despite being a beer and coke. The food options were good and we ordered some bread and olive oil to start. It was quite expensive for what you got and the presentation was literally bread with a bowl of oil but is what it is. Anyway the food arrived after half an hour and was good. Portion size was decent and was very tasty. Unfortunately however it was from here that things were shambolic and uncomfortable. As you'd expect, the evening gradually got dark and despite this really nice gazebo with plenty of overhead and fairy lights etc, nobody turned them on. The place was somewhat busy in and out but after a while it was simply ridiculous! Customers were leaving and waiting staff were coming outside and in no rush to either clear tables or check on us. One male staff member must have walked outside to the doorway, stood and went back inside on perhaps five occasions, whilst the two young female staff (one of whom seemed new) did slowly clear tables. But with the greatest of respect, they did so slowly and seemed to prioritise that over seated tables without going over to check on them. We had absolutely no care after being brought our food. Nobody asked how it was, offered us more drinks, cleared the plates or any desert. It got to around 8:45 and I got up to request the lights be turned on. As I did so, another table got the attention of the new waitress and said it was crazy how they were serving drinks in pretty much darkness at this point. For anyone elderly or such, it was relatively dangerous too. The waitress went in to supposedly sort this. Fast forward half an hour, with staff still walking around and not approaching us long after we'd finished (nearly an hour after being brought the food), we began to joke about just walking out. The table who had complained certainly appeared to do this without paying and if it hadn't of been for the fact this was a date, I'd have definitely done the same. For a nice pub to charge the prices they do (£5.35 for a beer) you would expect a level of service. We joked to ourselves no wonder they didn't offer food at the river if they can't manage a light switch and customers a stone throw from the door. We went in to pay and didn't think much of checking the receipt but am now writing this review because having just seen were we charged £4.48 service charge, I feel insulted. I'm rarely one to complain about food and certainly appreciate young staff working hard but for well over an hour to not recognise customers outside are sitting and eating in the dark (having been told by different customers this fact also!), not ask us how we're doing and if we'd like anything and then have the audacity to charge for service is embarrassing! All in all £49.33 for bread, a beer, coke, two mains and chips. Can't say I will be going back or recommending the trout. Massively disappointed as I would have tipped well up until the experience of being left in the dark!

Sadly, I’ve never felt so unwelcome upon arriving at any pub/restaurant. There were three staff behind the bar when we arrived and not one of them gave any form of acknowledgment of our presence for a good few minutes, even though they had looked straight at us. Eventually though they spoke to us (they were extremely busy), and we were taken to our table. The food though, was excellent. We can’t fault it.

Very nice food and good friendly service but somehow a little bit lacking. I really don’t like automatic service charge on my bill (especially as there was a mistake and one round of drinks had been added twice - cheerfully removed when I pointed it out but the 10% of it on the service charge was not) one feels mean asking for the “discretionary” charge to be removed and the irony is we’d probably have left a bigger tip. They seemed to be preparing for something bigger whilst we were there so the staff were rather preoccupied with moving furniture around. Two items on the daily menu were not available by the time we got there (12.45) but there were alternatives, only one of which were we told about until after we’d ordered. We are local and have eaten here often - it may have been an off day or they may be resting a little on the laurels of a good reputation.

Booked online & made a silly mistake. No problem as I e-mailed the restaurant just after – no reply. Next day e-mailed on the Landlord’s address – no reply. Next day telephoned & left message – no reply. Next day telephoned again – left message – no reply. Next day telephoned – got through and spoke to a real person. Explained the mistake only to be told that she’d already changed my booking !!!! Didn’t bother to reply to my 2 e-mails nor reply to my 2 telephone messages. Really, really poor. I was on the verge of just going somewhere else where I knew I’d get in and be OK. On the upside, good service on the day, good food and fair value for money. NO complaints about that at all. But please reply to customer contact. It’s what your contact details are for !!!!!

We were staying at The Trout as part of a three venue tour of hotels in the Cotswold - The Trout was , in my opinion the best venue of the three. The Trout is situated on the Thames and is fantastic location of afternoon drinks watching the activity on the river. On one of the warmest days of the year the place was packed for dinner service. There are lots of outside tables for summer's evenings with some under a giant gazebo to keep of the midsummer sun. Food and drinks were excellent though I though the wine was a little on the pricey side. The cheese board one of the most varied and best I have had.Katie and her team cope well with the huge number of diners and our waiter, Ellie was attentive and amusing and helped make the evening such a pleasure.
