An English pub on a beautiful part of the Thames serving really good food efficiently and such a nice atmosphere: perfection!

Great views and a good atmosphere

While the staff was lovely, the food service was abysmal. We were given a discount, but it hardly made up for waiting for over an hour for food. The squid and pate appetisers we good the rest was left half eaten.

Delightful riverside pub with a lovely atmosphere. Too many tables in the restaurant and bar, it felt squashed. It was not a great selection for vegetarians. Nearly every dish had "exotic " mushrooms. Of course, the veggie meal was smaller than the meat dishes. When will restaurants learn that vegetarians like vegetables! A dish of Gnocchi and a slice of red pepper is not a main meal. Prices on the higher side (for us) main meal, dessert, and soft drink = £40. The staff were very attentive and polite.

Food was okay and not great value for money.

Five stars for Poppy who served us with a warm welcome and big smile while also being efficient professional and helpful we will return!

Amazing location but the roast was not good value for money. Too much meat, not enough veggies and the veggies were also not cooked properly. The menu also advertised bottomless gravy, which they did not bring and when we ask for some more it came in a tiny pot. Nice place for a drink but not good value for the money on food.

A lot of our food was good, but there were issues and the food service was very slow even though the staff were attentive and friendly. The chicken on my dad’s chicken salad was dry and tough. He had some of my daughter’s kids roast instead (which was absolutely enormous). Roast potatoes were hard in the middle/undercooked. Lemon tart delicious, sea bass good, veg good, chips and gravy good. Ladies toilets were all blocked. Absolute chaos getting out of car park due to bad parking. The issue is that the pub itself has soooo many tables, more than the kitchen, car park and indeed toilets can cope with. Perhaps less quantity and more quality needed.

Just dropped in for a drink on the terrace having eaten here previously. Second time we have been told all empty tables by wier were reserved despite being towards end of lunch when we arrived. Tables still empty when we left 1hr+ later.

Beautiful location, pub decor was also very attractive. Food was expensive, but delicious and the quality you would expect for a high end establishment. Pub is deceivingly large inside, but doesn't feel crowded. Best to book on weekends or evenings as it is super popular! Seating inside & outside by the river.

Delightful location but service on a Tuesday afternoon was very poor. First meals arrived without cutlery and condiments (maybe our mistake - should we have picked it up when ordering?). Food passable at best. We had ordered a two course menu and an hour after finishing the main course we had to search out a server to get our dessert. Coffees were delivered before main course plates were cleared. Server who cleared lacked etiquette - reaching over one of our party to pick up a pile of plates. Eventually, after more chasing, the rest of the desserts arrived, including the small desserts to go with the already-consumed coffees. Order also incorrect. Very disappointing.

Really a very good experience on a busy Sunday and we were 10 people. Great and friendly service, food very good quality, will definitely return! Fab location and very cosy interior. A gem.

Sub-par food, Cod was like tissue paper and batter undercooked or overly thick. A big disappointment as their self-aggrandising claim that it’s a Gastro Pub is simply ridiculous. The food is very average but overpriced.

Lovely village style pub located on the river. Good food and plenty of outside seating. Well worth a visit if in the area.

Had to walk out due to lack of service at the bar. A quarter of an hour wait for a drink is too long. Other than that, the pub was hot, packed and unpleasant and the only free seats were in the smoking area - I don't smoke... A great example of how to mess up an idyllic location.

Having been to the trout inn before we thought it would be great to go back for some lunch in the sun. However, when we arrived there were no clear tables in site (all had food and glasses left on) we had to clean our own table, so many menus were screwed up where others had attempted to use it as a cloth to do the same. Saw many customers walk out after an attempt to find a seat as they didn’t want to clean up other people’s mess! The setting is beautiful, just a shame about the service, we walked in and the girl seemed annoyed we wanted to eat, and had to ask her manager for permission? Despite everyone around us eating? Wouldn’t have been happy to tip! Probably won’t return again :(

Great service from Steph, amazing food and lovely view

Great interior, but a disappointingly underwhelming terrace with most seats having little or no clear river view. Tired furnishings and awkward seating arrangements detract from an otherwise promising riverside location. Top end of the price range for a pub. This was a first time visit and am not really compelled to return again given the truly dreadful terrace but with riverside pubs in short supply, it's a must-use facility for Oxfordians to patronise and cherish and I would like to think (hope) provides the funding and impetus to get sad terrace back to top form.

Beautiful pub, lovely surroundings. The food was very standard and was very overpriced - £18.25 for the most basic fish and chips and £19.50 for the lacklustre burger - you can’t tell me these ingredients are not straight from Brakes. It’s pub food - not of high quality. The prices are set purely from greed. Toilets are also disgusting - come for a pint but don’t order the food!

Terrible time. The food was hours late. While the staff was understanding and explained that it was due to technical issues, we had to follow up twice (after one hour and then after 40 more minutes) before we received service. Though technical issues are understandable, I am not sure why that meant that the parties next to us ordered after us and received food earlier. Moreover, one table got free drinks for the wait, while we received nothing. We were promised a refund but it has yet to be processed. The food was subpar.

Went twice in a week the first time we waited 2hrs for our food and were told it was due to an app malfunction and we should have been told not to use it.....we weren't, despite one of our table getting their food after using the app, we then waited for undercooked food. Went the second time only 1.5hr wait this time and the kitchen screens had gone down this time apparently. Everyone else was given a refund... I wasn't offered one. Staff were friendly and apologetic but frankly twice in a week something needs to change. Food was average, veg wasn't cooked my steak had half a raw chalotte on it for some reason. Lovely setting, dreadful service, especially for the money.

Loved it. We turned up a group of 4 and they knocked it out of the park. Oysters were super fresh. Beer was cold and bubbly and staff friendly and attentive. Salmon 5/5 Ribs 5/5 Oysters 5/5 Squid 5/5 Fish pie 5/5 Beer 5/5 Wine 5/5 Would highly recommend

Beautiful atmosphere outside and in, lovely historical building. Food was amazing and service was great, everyone was so friendly.

The food never arrived. Staff are friendly and the setting is absolutely stunning. In the end we we got a full refund including the drinks, which is beyond fair. Sometimes IT equipment just lets us down, will try again one day.

The worlds worst table booking system. Want to speak to someone - nope. Don't bother calling them it's a horrific automated system. Even after several tries at different times - nobody answering the phone, it just rings and rings.

Came here for a weekday dinner catch up with a couple of friends. The food was lovely and arrived in good time. Nell our server was very friendly and looked after us very well.

It’s a terrible shame that we seem to have booked a table on a day when there were staffing problems. We had travelled far and were made to wait a long time (half an hour) for our table and even longer to be able to order. Sadly the food for the six of us was nit brought out close together but over half an hour - the roast was rubbery and cold by the time it was given to us. Also the coffee machine had been running out of beans and one cappuccino was milky water. However, Lily was a pleasant and friendly waitress and she gave us a discount of half the cost of the food without us even having to complain or ask. Lovely pub, we were students in the 90’s who came here occasionally. However the birthday meal for our daughter was rather disappointing.

Our visit was awful. We used to visit the Trout regularly 5 years ago and it was absolutely shocking how much the service, the menu choices, and the food have deteriorated while the prices almost doubled. We were a large party of 13 including 3 children and our children had to wait almost 3 (!!!) hours for their food to be served. My son was then served a burned sausage, my daughter's burger was uninspiring, and the fish and chips were just fish and chips (not even any peas). Most of the adults could not order their first (or even second) choice from a very uninspiring menu because they had no food left. All the starters were so salty they were barely edible. The mains (when they finally came at 3pm, we arrived at 12:30) were eaten hungrily but nothing was good - my steak sandwich was basically dry bread with 4 tiny slivers of steak that had been cooked for so long it had the consistency of an old shoe. We were served the wrong side dish and when they took it back (after my son had his fingers in it) they wanted to take it straight to the next table - how horrifying. All of us used to enjoy coming to the Trout. None of us will ever come back. Even the discount we were given on the bill will not make up for the awful food and service we had on our visit.

Nell was a great waitress, attentive and very helpful. Food was delicious, especially the rum steamed pudding with ginger ice cream. Highly recommend. Book in advance to be sure of getting a table.

Our waitress Nell was incredibly attentive, tending to multiple tables at once in a professional yet personal manner. Along with the amazing food, the setting is brilliant and worthy of the praise it receives both in Oxford and beyond.

The Trout is an Oxford institution. I've been coming here for forty years, often by boat. If you can eat outside the riverside terrace is wonderful. On a midweek afternoon visit on a sunny day, when it wasn't crowded, I'm sorry to say the food wasn't great. Vegetarian sandwich delivered with meat gravy. Other food good, but not justifying the above average price. It may have been an off day in the kitchen. I'll update the food verdict next time I visit.

Fabulous building, great food and efficient service.

The Trout Inn was serve yourself by ordering at the bar and then the food was brought to your table, but you had to get your own drinks. I had the meatless burger wotha small side salad and it tasted alright. My friend had the Malbec pie with three small pieces of meat in it. The flavor was nice, but we felt that the £18 price tags were out of line. On the plus side you would be hard pressed to find a lovelier location and the staff was Ace.

One of Oxford's most lovely pubs! Nothing quite like having some lunch at the Trout and then walking back through Port Meadow.

Terrible service/ have to order at bar where staff are fairly clueless: we’re going to serve us warm champagne as they had none chilled …. Was unable to order deserts as the chef had packed up by 21:15 …. A joke - still paid top dollar for no service or deserts

Lovely pub down by the river with a great beer garden and a wide selection of ales However all the empty tables were covered with used plates and glasses which I had to clear myself to sit down - this was at 3.30pm

Lovely setting, however on ordering on a summer's evening (6pm, 30.7.24), we were told they had no baked camembert, no pizza, no halloumi, even no chips!?! (everything we wanted to order, so we left!) Whoever is responsible for ordering ingredients (potatoes?!) should be sacked! Not impressed at all. One item unavailable- ok, it happens, 4 items (and likely to be even more than this overall, as these were the only 4 items we had wanted to order) and for basics like chips and pizza to be unavailable at this time is just not acceptable at all! Also, I would have expected the girl who gave us the menus at the start to have helpfully informed us of what was unavailable on the menu to save us wasting time deciding what we wanted to then find out it was all unavailable and having to go elsewhere.

Riverside location overwatched by a heron (may not be in situ everyday). Good food. Clipped welcome on entry and lack of charm offensive throughout (younger female staff were friendlier), which, of course, some might enjoy. Decor throughout is comfortably attractive.

We got seated quickly which was good but it did feel as though we were just stuffed in a tiny little corner with not much room to move. We waited 20 minutes before anyone came and took our drinks and food order. No apologies but the waitress was lovely, she apologised for the drinks taking a while due to it being busy which was absolutely fine and understandable. The food was served quickly and our server and the waitress were so polite and lovely. Nothing was too much bother for them. The food was all incredible. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish and polished off the majority of it. Will definitely return.

I came here with my family when we were visiting Oxford, and we were served by Nell who was lovely and made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious and I was happy to see multiple vegan options for myself to choose from. Would happily come here again next time we are visiting!

We were very disappointed that 3 things we ordered were not available, our meals turned up at different times and when my wife's meal arrived it was missing key ingredients as listed on the menu, when we raised the issue instead of replating a new dish they just threw some tomatoes on top. Our starter dishes were also not cleared when our main was served. It was disappointing to see other customers complain and struggling to find something they had available on the menus. This place could be amazing but it needs to make some big changes.

Lovely setting but the food was dry (over done toast with 4 prawns) I mentioned the quality of the food to the staff but was shrugged off, disappointing!!

The obvious selling point of the trout is the view of the river and of course that is lovely but everything else about the trout is disappointing. The service is awful and slow, the food is terrible for the price point, how are the bathrooms so dirty? Lovely for a drink but I would absolutely give the food a miss.

Wow! What a find, tried it on personal recommendation and not disappointed. Lovely & clever menu choices (recently - July 2024 - updated) Nice range of drinks & beers, a couple of cask too. Very impressed by the service, staff were all great.
