Don’t get me wrong, I like The Trout and have had some excellent meals here however having visited family in Whitehaven and returning to Yorkshire we detoured to The Trout for something delicious to eat. Both opting for the Sunday roast with one having beautifully cooked beef, still pink in the middle I ordered the half roast chicken. It was neither roasted nor half a chicken but an unsliced flavorless chicken breast that at best was perhaps pan fried, I was disappointed. The gravy was more wine and herb flavoured as opposed to meat flavoured which again was a little disappointing. On the up though the vegetables were cooked well except the roasties needed to be crispier and the mash creamier. When next eating at The Trout on a Sunday I’m going to pass on the roast thank you. I noted previous reviews for the roast dinner were from 2020 and 2019 so a more current review I felt was necessary.

We stated at the Trout hotel on the15th june for 2 nights. My wife is in a wheelchair so we decided to call room service to make it easier, unfortuatley no one answered the phone, so i went with our order to the bar to see if i could find anyone, the resturant manager took our orderbut gave no explanation as to why no one answered phone. Next morn we went for breakfast but to our shock there was a makeshift 45' ramp goung up to the breakfast room so i pushed her up with great difficulty, after brsakfast i went to wheel her down the damp and because it was set on an angle and not sqare we nearly came off the side of ramp, extremly dangerous, Alison the breakfast manager came to our aid and was fantastic and she reported to manager and the next time we went it had gone so weel done Alison as she has helped save a serious accident happening. The resturant manager who i saw previos eve was not the best people person and never smiled once, maybe Alison could do a better job as nothing was to much trouble. Apart from that all was good.

Lunch at The Trout. We both ordered exactly the same, the steak baguette with Dijon mustard mayo with a side order of skin on fries and two diet cokes. When we ordered we were the only people in the bar area. After about 25 mins our food arrived, no sign of the drinks, so we asked a passing waiter to chase up our drinks. The baguettes were beige in colour, very doughy and tasteless, there was very little steak and a blob of mayo, no Dijon at all. The manager realised that we still hadn’t received our drinks, he apologised and removed one of the baguettes from our bill. Honestly, best part of the meal was the drinks. We have a business in Cockermouth so are regularly asked for recommendations for lunch, sadly we will no longer be recommending the Trout

We had dinner for three in the Terrace Bar on Saturday 17th February 2024. Starters goats cheese and chive soufflé, tasty but small for £10.50, garlic bread with mozzarella and salt and pepper squid were lovely. Chicken burger was good but frozen fries for £18. Chicken curry was nice but with two nan breads smaller than a biscuit? The duo of pork is supposed to come with crushed potatoes but was served with mash? The food standard overall was average and expensive for what we got, we ordered a dressed salad with our meal, it never came plus my daughter was asked if she wanted extra sauce for her burger, she asked for ketchup and that didn’t arrive either. Two chocolate brownie desserts with coffee at £8.50 each, were disappointing, small hard brownies, not worth the money, had much nicer elsewhere. The servers were friendly and apologetic and my daughter got a free drink to compensate. Overall, we were not overly impressed, the environment deserves much better food and service, it’s a longtime since we ate here and we won’t be back in a hurry.

Went for dinner when staying in the area. We have previously stayed there 3 times over last 6 years. Our visit did not start well, the car park was completely full and we had to park some distance away on the main street. It was a very wet night and we were soaked by the time we got into the restaurant. Arrived at the dining room, advised a membef of staff we had a reservation, he checked and then pointed to a table. Never said a word!! Dining room very dark, dismal and very old fashioned. Just 6 other diners, not at all busy. No ambience at. Menu very dull and uninspiring and again old fashioned. Little choice for vegetarians. Service was competent but charmless. Both our meals were tepid at best, my chips undercooked soggy and inedible. Very sad by this experience. The Trout was once excellent but it is now 3 rate charmless old fashioned and dull. We paid £55 for a meal of 2 main courses, 2 beers and a coffee, very very expensive. Much better restaurants in Cockermouth, this one should be avoided

Where to start?! Terrible service. 1 1/2 hours for a meal to be served then one meal, fish, was undercooked. Sent back and still not received 20 minutes later so told to forget it. 20 minutes for a round of drinks and the empty glasses were not removed until asked to be taken away. £7 for a pint of lager and nearly £5 for a pint of flat lemonade. Mediocre 1980s style food massively overpriced. Do not spend your money here

Decided to visit on a Sunday evening as we had not long arrived locally and although there were mixed reviews, most seemed to be in regards to afternoon tea and room bookings. There was some minor bumps over finding a table as I hadn’t booked online but we were seated cordially in a window. Drinks could have been simplified, the order of a slimline tonic came with no ice or lemon and the diet cola came flat and from the pump. I asked for this to be changed to a bottle and it came as the full sugar variety but at that point I wasn’t going to send it back. Food ordering was simple enough although our server didn’t know what the ‘of the day’ dishes were, my partner had the steamed muscles and I took the quiche with salad. For my part (after a 6 hour trek from Essex) I was grateful for food, however given the price tag, it was lacking. Side salad - tasty, plus one point, New Potatoes - pre cooked and blasted in the microwave so the inside had a gelatinous quality before being drenched in buttery oil, minus one point, Quiche - overcooked, the pastry was more akin to a tin, not so much crumble in the mouth as shatter on the plate. While I do eat with a knife and fork it took strength with the knife to break the pastry apart. The filling was over cooked and the cheese had crusted at the edges with a lasagna like quality, the interior texture was between egg and a dry rice pudding. The decor is gracious, greys and contemporary patterns, but there is little attention to cleaning. Cobwebs hung from the window we were seated as well as from the picture frames. Looking down at the authentic cast iron radiator I was aware of the dust and food debris around it. Maybe they deep clean in the week (?) We didn’t stop past the mains, paid the bill and left. A testament to disappointment and an allergy to lazy cooking. Yes I could have complained to the team but I didn’t feel that it would be well received on the basis that if the kitchen is happy to send the food out like this, they are unlikely to appreciate the finer points of a critique.

Stayed overnight, unfortunately after travelling six hours we arrived to be told our booking.com reservation was cancelled and they didn’t have any other booking for us , however this was rectified when we showed our confirmation and we were upgraded to a suite . What we didn’t like was having to walk through the lounge where people were eating with all our luggage and being stared at , very embarrassing. Also we got in the way of the restaurant staff with our luggage. Bad layout. The suite itself was lovely however it was so noisy on the main road I got no sleep that night . The hotel is expensive £200 for a night and as we are vegan unfortunately breakfast was just fruit so we didn’t bother . Room service cost £10 for a tray whether you just wanted a sandwich which is a bit expensive so we didn’t bother.Hotel was easy to find and free car park , however it’s also a busy restaurant and bar so we were lucky to get the last free space , no idea what we would have done if it was full. !! We met some locals who told us Bing Crosby used to stay there and fish in the lake .

The service was excellent, Steve and another young lady, who's name I didn't catch. They couldn't have been more helpful. Shame that the food let them down a bit. I ordered "CRISPY PORK AND BLACK PUDDING WITH APPLE SAUCE". The meat was like a pulled pork mixed with some black pudding. A smear of apple sauce on top with some SMALL crumbs of crackling on top and not many of them either. Very disappointed in the meal. My wife had the roast dinner and that was very good, (I had some of it as my meal was very small). She had a pudding which was very dry, so much so that she had to use the milk from the coffee to soften it up. Coffee was very good .

We only stayed for 1 night. The rate was inclusive of a £28.50 credit per person for the restaurant and bistro. For this you could have the excellent set menu and coffee. There was also an a la cart menu which included fillet steak. The Trout has been closed and refurbished over recent years as ther have been 2 major floods in Cockermouth. It pains me to write this but our recent visit to the Trout was a really bad experience. We had visited a couple other times over the last 18 months and noticed the quality of the food and service had declined but refrained from writing a review in the hope that it was a 'bad spell'. Clearly, it looks to now be normality. We have been good customers of the Trout for many years, having got married here years ago, returning for regular meals in the restaurant, terrace bar and overnight stays. My review and two previous bad experiences are involving the Terrace Bar as we have refrained from booking the restaurant again until we seen improvement.

From the main road the hotel looks a bit dated, however when you enter the hotel from the car park the fittings are modern and luxurious. We had lunch in the bar area where we were greeted by very friendly young staff. We opted for the three tapas for £15.00 (calamari, beautiful plump succulent king prawns and tempura soft shell crab). We also had two main specials for £12.00 of smoked haddock risotto and a huge home made chicken burger and chips. All of the dishes were excellent and nicely presented-well done chef. There is also a beer garden and tables and chairs where you could sit by the river on a nice day.Excellent lunch with the added bonus of parking in the centre of Cockermouth. Can recommend.

As regulars to the Trout we can't praise the dining experience enough! In the Bistro the regular & tapas menu is very good. The 'specials' menu is more adventurous & a real treat - the lobster & crayfish linguine was superb. Congratulations to the chef, who always delivers and to the waiting staff who are very friendly & genuinely seem interested in the food. I'm informed the beer is well kept & here too the staff are knowledgeable about their product. Thanks to all.

Visited The Trout for a bar/bistro meal whilst in Cockermouth and were warmly welcomed by the staff. As it was midweek it was fairly quiet with some regular travellers dining but service was good albeit relaxed.

¿No conducir?

Lunch for 4 with 2 in their nineties. Lunch was excellent - one steak, one steak and ale pie and two fish and chips - all very good both quantity and quality. Puddings much less impressive - my French Apple Tart was hardly recognisable as such with a bit of soggy pastry, and a few slices of dry apple on top. No filling and no glazing - and nowhere near as good as a traditional apple pie (does anywhere do this anymore?) . On the other hand the banana parfait looked ok (good feedback from Mum) and hubby enjoyed the porn star coppa - which i think he got purely because of the name (a good marketing ploy?).

He tenido comidas congeladas mucho mejores para 2. 50.

We stayed here for my birthday and it was great. The food was lovely, the drink was also nice. The atmosphere was good and the staff were helpful enough. The room was nice, the bathroom had under floor heating which I found exceptional as no other hotel I have stayed in has had this. The room was slightly dated, hence why I gave 4 stars. The bed was comfortable enough, however we expected a more modern room for the price of it.

Our friends booked this place for dinner. First problem was the car park was full and we had to find somewhere to park on the streets. The place was extremely busy and buzzing. There seemed to be lots going on with parties of people enjoying themselves which was nice and contributed to a really good atmosphere. We were booked into the bar as the brasserie was full. We were seated quickly and drinks orders taken. Staff were really lovely and very efficient. There was an extensive menu, including the a la carte and a specials menu which you could mix and match. Three of us had starters - one rumbledethump with a friend egg, one bread and butter pudding savory and one hot smoked salmon. These all arrived, beautifully presented. The hot smoked salmon was a bit on the meagre side but the other two were quite substantial. Mains included the venison burger with pear and blue cheese which was an odd mix but it seemed to work, two of us had the risotto which was very tasty. Desserts were chosen, one Ecclefechan tart with clotted cream and one lime coppa. Two of our party had coffee which arrived with home made shortbread which was very lovely. Our waiter produced two more pieces of shortbread for those of us who werent having coffee which was a nice touch. With wine the bill came to £107, which was very reasonable. A really lovely evening.

The state of this place continues its sad decline. Standards have dropped significantly since my last visit a couple of months ago. The men's toilets are an absolute disgrace. There's one serviceable cubicle- but the toilet bowl is hanging off the wall and the door lock has been bodged up so many times it barely provides the necessary privacy. The stench from the urinals is so bad - you can tell when the toilet door opens as it wafts into the pub. Not really what you want to be smelling when you're eating and drinking- it's bad enough when you have to go to the toilet . The staff are great but completely up against it as there are so few of them. Dirty glasses pile up on tables untouched. This place is desperate for a makeover. I for one won't be rushing back. I know the beer is cheap but, I'm afraid I'd rather pay "proper pub" prices and have a degree of comfort rather than sit in a what effective looks and smells like a cattle market. Come on 'Spoons. You can do much much better than this.

My husband, myself and our 13 year old son visited The Brasserie two days ago on a Saturday evening. We were able to walk from our cottage accomadation to the Brasserie. On arrival to the venue we were very impressed by the beautiful driveway leading down to the Brasserie. The whole establishment is obviously very well kept with beautiful spring flowers and plants and lovely lighting down the drive. On entering the Brasserie however, we were suprised that the decor didnt appear to match the rest of the hotel. We were approached by a friendly waiter on arrival who took our drinks and food order promptly. He checked we were all ok during the first half of our meal and we felt his interactions with us were appropriate, not too overpowering or disinterested. My husband ordered the mushroom stroganoff. He felt it was quite ordinary and bland. I ordered the brushetta and a side portion of fries. I felt the brushetta was overpriced but the fries were beautiful. My son ordered the pizza which he said was really tasty! During the meal.another member of staff( female) arrived and we have to say it was quite an experience! We had ordered a second round of drinks. I had ordere a lakes gin and a small bottle of fever tree ginger ale to mix it with. I was allowing my son to taste the ginger ale from the bottle. The waitress appeared out of nowhere and snatched the bottle from his hand with a resounding"no!" It shocked us all! We reassured her that this was not an alcoholuc drink. She then commented in quite a rude manner when my husband wiped his nose gently on a napkin and also told us later on during the meal that she was used to working in the " posh restaurant". During our meal she stood over us on several.occasions which we felt was inappropriate and a bit unnerving! We felt she would benefit from some more training from more experienced members of staff. We did realise she was young and and was probably trying to.please (.a little too much). We were very patient with her but felt there may be future guests who may not be quite so tolerant! A little later during the evening my husband and our son went to use the toilet closest to the Brasserie. They came back and both told me there was smashed glass on the floor and a dirty nappy. My husband reported this to a member of staff from the spa team. On leaving the Brasserie we walked through to the hotel reception as we were all so concerned about the state of the toilet and wanted to ensure it had been sorted and the message had got trough. The lady on hotel reception didnt appear to know anything about this but we did see her promptly speaking to another hotel member of staff after our conversation. The only other disappointing part to.our meal was the cheeseboard. It sounded fantastic on the Brasserie menu but when it arrived we were informed that some of the cheeses were not available. The waiter did however add a few extra for us but we felt this could have been mentioned before we went ahead with the order. Sadly it was a disappointing experience as it could be a fabulous setting within the grounds of an obviously gorgeous hotel.

We were staying in Keswick on the first of November 2024 to celebrate two 50th birthday’s. Keswick was extremely busy and four eating establishments we went to couldn’t accommodate our party of seven. However the Lake road inn had vacant tables which was great and now I understand why. It was 2.30pm and the kitchen was closing at 5.00pm so they explained the menu was limited (fair enough). After viewing the limited menu we decided it couldn’t accommodate our party so thought we would have a drink whilst booking another venue on line for an hours time. Ordered a Guinness then a glass of Malbec. No Malbec and then discovered a lot of the ales were unavailable too. We decided this just wasn’t for us and said to the bar it doesn’t matter and left. We were chased across the pub by a member of staff with a card reader to pay for the half Guinness that was settling (the first drink on my order) he said I had to pay as it was wastage? Like nothing ever gets spilt behind the bar??.I reluctantly paid for it and asked for an additional empty half glass in order to share it so we could quickly move on. We moved out side and found the empty half glass was dirty and the Guinness had a black hair in the head. We poured it down the drain. We love Keswick and the people are lovely, friendly and accommodating. So please don’t waste your money at the Lake Road Inn. There are so many better establishments than here!! Avoid!! As a party of seven there for food and drinks we would have spent £200+, so their loss!! We had a lovely meal at the Pack Horse Inn. Lamb burger special was tremendous!!! I highly recommend the Pack horse inn, the pheasant, or the George. I can only hope The lake Road Inn falls into administration and a decent proprietor takes it over. Harsh but fair.
