The Travellers Rest in Chorley

Food quality didn’t live up to the fancy menu descriptions. Potato was only lukewarm. Yorkshire pudding was just a big ball of tasteless crisp. Rice pudding could have come out of a tin - nothing special about it at all. Prices are on the high side but not justified. Disappointing.

Very slow service took 45mins to serve starter and a further 40 mins after removing starter plates to serve main course. Then children’s meals arrived and they had eaten before adult meals came. On serving meal told the sides which were ordered could not be provided. Food was very mediocre and nothing special for high cost.

We ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and the Fisherman's Friday Special, both cooked to perfection and good value for money. Service was also impeccable. .

Hi, I'm really sorry to have to write this, but my family of 6 booked Easter Monday 2024, for 1pm lunch. We had ordered steak pie, 3 fish & chips, 1 gammon & 1 burger, well we were told no steak pie or no fish & chips , so we changed order , the gammon was like thin round cheap , most places its usually thick like steak also you would have peas, we ordered bottle of rosie to be told you only had this particular one, we had it, when we got the bill, we never ever question a bill,but even the rosie wine was £32, I would pay that for good white or red but rosie it's a no no. I'm just so disappointed considering you come recommended .I'm sorry for my honesty

Nice pub Ordered drinks at the table 15 Arrived fast Asked if we was ready to order food. Said no please give us 5/10 mins . Came back a few minutes later .not 5 mins Ordered sunday gammon and beef Food arrived fast.veg was cold ( no check back ) .asked if we wanted any sauces asked for horseradish didn't arrive . Staff need to improve on there dress code skirts a little short ( just saying )

We’ve been to this pub a number of times. Usually it’s very busy and has a great atmosphere. We haven’t been able to make it for a while due to other commitments but we managed to go today. The staff were lovely as always but it was almost empty which is very unusual from our past experiences. The food was fine but nothing like the great quality we have had in the past. The starters of garlic sourdough and teriyaki chicken were the highlights. The mains of fish and chips and pie and chips were disappointing sadly. The pie was serviced in a bowl instead of on a plate which didn’t make sense and the gravy was bland and watery. The triple cooked chips on both meals were hard in the middle and tasted undercooked. I hope it was just an off day as it’s a shame.

Firstly the waiting staff were lovely and we couldn't fault them. Most of the starters were fine though the soup was lukewarm. Main course was also lukewarm and apart from the meat and Yorkshire pudding everything felt like it had been reheated. Desert was okay but the brownies were requested hot but again only just warm.Three of our party have been suffering with diarrhoea all day today!!! This is the only time we met for Mother's day, needless to say we will not be returning.

Lovely food could not fault dog friendly and they get a free meal fantastic place.

Just has a brilliant lunch here. Good is exceptional and great value for money. Really polite and efficient service too.

Our go to lunch spot! So friendly and accommodating of families - we are so well looked after whenever we go and today was no exception with the lovely Lewis. The menu and specials change regularly so there’s always something new to try as well as the classics with cheap and cheerful options on the light bites lunch menu as well as the slightly more expensive a la carte. Would recommend to anyone!

Food was excellent. Service was top notch ( Lewis) , the manager is so friendly and informative. A great place, we already have booked for a 90th celebration 🍾. Amazingly, they have a Dog Menu, 🐕.. very welcoming.

Disappointed! It used to be our go to place for Sunday lunch but not after this visit! £19 and the veg were just warm, one piece of the two pieces of beef I got was full of fat and chewy. The so called cauliflower cheese, you pay extra for, wasn’t cauliflower cheese at all it was cauliflower with cheese grated over it and the smallest portion I’ve ever seen for £5 extra! Sadly we won’t be back.

Called sunday25/2/24 dissapointed with Sunday lunch 19 pounds had changed menu called 2weeks ago small portion was about 11 pounds quite a few meals not available May try again when menu changes

Visited this pub/restaurant last night for an 80th birthday party in a group of 12 and were given a private room and thoroughly enjoyed the celebration. The food was good with a wide choice of dishes, the surroundings were very pleasant and the staff were excellent.

The Travellers Rest was the venue chosen for my 80th birthday party evening meal. The meal for our party was excellent; the menu choice was superb; and the serving and bar staff were friendly and very attentive. I was presented with a lovely birthday cake as well with candles! I'm not sure whether this was provided by the staff or not. Either way it was lovely and we were all looked after so very well. Thank you Travellers Rest

Wheelchair accessible, appropriate tables for wheelchair users, able to pull up to table without things in way e.g. table leg. Enjoyable experience with lovely staff, would visit again if in the area 👍👍

Ĺovely atmosphere served by lovely waitress, even popped the fire on for us. Food lovely, triple cooked chips a must. Will definitely call again. Oh and Whinnie toe dog is just the cutest thing ever 😍

Went on Sunday 4th Feb with a friend for a catch up over lunch and was slightly worried after seeing some of the more recent reviews. However, everything was lovely. We both had the half Sunday lunch (roast chicken) which was more than enough food and it was extremely tasty and nice and hot. Service was great too and the place had a nice ambience. I did think some of the items on the menu were pricey, but in fairness the hospitality industry in general appears to have gone this way. Would definitely recommend and will definitely return 👍😊

Quite disappointed. The food was average at best and I paid the most I have ever paid for a cup of tea (nearly £4 a cup) only brown sugar with coffee style cups. Safe to say we will not be going back! I eat out a lot and rarely leave a review, but this time I felt it necessary to leave a negative review. I wish I had checked on Tripadvisor before I booked !

Booked for a friends catch up, we were surprised at the high prices of the average meals that were served.. and the boxer dog was snorting around our table wasn’t the experience we were expecting! It’s safe to say we will not be doing a return visit!!!!

Came here on Christmas day (2023) - what some might say - the most special day of the year. Very busy,good traditional atmosphere and quite friendly staff. The downside: well; the food shall we say. Had prawn cocktail for starters: found it bland and dry and without any butter for bread.had to ask for some. The main: traditional turkey roast. potatoes and veg lovely and warm - but turkey very lukewarm indeed.totally spoiled by this major flaw. Desert: Christmas pudding in brandy sauce.lovely - no complaints on that score. The staff rushed off their feet,I guess.but we were asked several times by different servers - "if we'd like any drinks".got a bit fed up answering the same question over and over... Not cheap to come out on Christmas day for a meal - our choice of course.but overall experience was one of disappointment. Bah humbug!

Warm friendly pub and staff, best pub in Chorley. Even on a busy Christmas day everything was first class, but Winnie the dog still remains my favourite member of staff 😀

Booked for Christmas Day meal , party of 5 Arrived on time welcomed at the door and the experience went down hill from there . After an hour at the table we we had received only the starter , which to say was just adequate. The main when arrived came with undercooked potatoes, over cooked vegetables and undercooked Yorkshire pudding . We all experienced and left the the main meal . Whilst having the Desert the bar area was populated with the second sitting of people, just utter chaos. I and my party will never frequent the premises again and will not recommend it to anybody. I think a decent Chef and some organisation needs to be done here . THANKS for a good ( I think not ) Christmas Day.

Yesterday I booked a meal for New Years Eve with friends. We arrived at the pub just before 6pm as we had booked the table for 6pm. We ended up waiting one and a half hours to be served. When the food arrived, it was cold and over cooked. One of us had ordered the cheese pie, you couldn’t cut through the crust, which was disappointing. Overall I wouldn’t recommend this place to friends and family.

Very Happy with our Christmas Dinner. Nicely cooked and plentiful. The organisation of the whole event was very good, food service excellent, with no long waits for anything. We would definitely return.

Ruined my mother in laws Christmas day meal at £90 a head for extremely bad food. On mentioning this to staff and management- the reply from the manager was that your Christmas may be ruined, but you're not ruining MINE. Is that exccepptable definitely not. The money needs to be refunded. To a pension aged couple that saved up for their Christmas meal. Avoid this place, and if anyone had the same experience post it

Myself and my family went to the Travellers Rest for Christmas Dinner yesterday evening. We paid £60 per person for a set menu and we were highly disappointed with the whole experience which made us feel like we’ve been ‘ripped off’. First of all the service was very slow waiting ages for our food and drinks every time. The food was not great giving the price, the menu stated one thing and they passed plates that did not look anything like what it was supposed to be. When we complained about it, they didn’t seem to care about our opinions and left us to it as they said they were short staffed. I’m local to the travellers rest and certainly won’t be going again.

One of my favourite little places. Cute, cozy, and chilled. Just everything on point about this place. Do yourself a favour and have a visit :)

I don't know about the other reviews but the Christmas meal was to unedible. Poor service and when I complained it was me that was at fault I don't know regarding photos but the food did not resemble anything like what was presented

I attended the travlers rest as part of a group of 8 with our dogs. The food was impeccable, the staff were friendly and happy to help and the pub was cozy warm and welcoming!

Booked to eat here on Saturday night at 6:30pm. We were sad to see it so quiet on a Saturday evening with only one other family in. The decor is astonishingly smart and really welcoming. The cheese and onion pie was served in a bowl with far far too much cheese sauce (you could hardly see the pie). We thought it was a dessert. The sauce was thick and gloopy and provided an overwhelmingly bland taste, making it very sickly and ruining the whole meal. It was served with chips on the side in a dish - there was no comparison between presentation of the two dishes. With a pie already full of cheese I just don’t know why a sauce (never mind the quantity) is needed. Basically a fondue set instead of a pie and chips - really disappointing and not sure who approved this. The steak and ale pie was nice although the veg tasted past its best. The service we received was impeccable and the young lady who served us provided so much information on the menu and drink options. A beautiful place but with a meal like that it’s hard to focus on anything else, disappointing as could be an award-winning establishment.

Really comfy, clean and welcoming. Staff were amazing and constantly offered to help. We took our dog and he was welcomed 🤗 and when getting his meal staff delivered right to him. Staff couldn't help more getting us drinks, food and water for the dog. Food was lovely and the staffs recommendations were spot on. Food was amazing and portions gaint.

1st time visiting, as we're moving into the area. Have to say the food was phenomenal and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately they had an issue with the cellar due to the weather but can't fault them for an act of God! In our book it just gives us another reason to visit again (which we were going to do anyway after the delight that was dinner) to try some of the local draft ales.

Great service, nice atmosphere, had the lunch menu which was great value for money, strongly recommended the fish and chips, Barry my dog had the complimentary chicken and veg in gravey off the dog menu. Will be back again next time we're in the area.

Nice and cosy atmosphere, staff was great. Sad to say that the food left us wishing for more. I had the noodles which were quite bland, and was not impressed with the ingredients quality or taste. However my parents steak was lovely, well cooked and nicely presented.

Excellent service and great food, the staff are lovely and nothing is too much trouble, very dog friendly with a special menu for them, there meals are free with adult meals, well worth a visit you won’t be disappointed.

Had a wonderful lunch, the pub managed to feel cosy, classy and yet spacious, a really warm welcome when we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble, a special mention for the manager, she was brilliant, patient and a credit to the pub. As were all the staff, very aware and attentive the chefs need a mention too, the menu and food were immense. The Teriyaki chicken starter was stand out, our mains were fantastic! Looking forward to trying more on the menu in the future when we get chance. Plus I'll give the Mango Pale Ale a go too.

Brilliant grass roots gastropub. Brilliant service, large yet not overwhelming menu with all sorts of great food for all budgets, food was excellent, was very quiet but still brilliant setup. Will definitely be going back.

Everything was really lovely food very tasty rice pudding to die for really nice. Will call again.

Place is very clean and the staff are great, unfortunately the food lets it’s down, it’s fine dine prices with more of a two for one experience, we was the first of three to eat, the second complained and the third walked out! Rice pudding at £7.50 per person is astronomical

won't be returning poor quality food, steak and ale pie, steak seemed to be missing, expensive. half the menu wasn't available. only one available bitter on tap . can't see it lasting long

We had a bad experience it took 1hr 15mins for the food to come. I ordered the salmon en croute and it was aweful it tasted like frozen salmon and the potato rosti tasted more like hash browns, it was £26 which was way over priced for what you got.

Wonderful village pub with attentive and efficient staff serving excellent food.

Nice atmosphere good service but unfortunately food was a let down. Steak Pie and fish and chips were good. Noodles were uneatable very strange taste. Pesto pasta was bland also looked to have been made from the bottom of the bag pasta, as most of the pasta was in broken pieces. So wanted it to be good but not worth the high prices.

Top quality food every time I come, had the noodles today and it was just as good as top Asian restaurants. The service was excellent and I couldn’t have been more looked after. The manager Megan was extremely helpful and we have booked again for next weekend!

Not the best I've had mostly pre-pared food probably frozen then warmed up ,there were 10 in our party bill came to over £415 so with tip about £42 each so not good value we were all disappointed,the waitresses were lovely and kind and gave good service pity the food was poor.

Hands down the best roast Iv had, bold statement but true. I’m not one for leaving reviews but this little gem deserves praise and gratitude. Great staff, amazing food, relaxing atmosphere and very family friendly. You will not be disappointed.

Very disappointing! Not been here for a few years and after reading the reviews we were really looking forward to trying. We ordered a large beef roast dinner and 2 small chicken dinners, it was so bland and the roast potatoes were anemic. The gravy was like water and for £19 a roast was not what you expected. The cauliflower cheese was probably the highlight but at £4.95 extra you'd expect it to be. Always puts me off when the meal is bulked out with peas. The service was fine and on telling the staff they were very apologetic but no offer of a discount or free drink to compensate was offered. We won't be returning and it's a shame as we take my mother out for a roast quite often.

From walking through the door we were treated to excellent service and food. Drinks order taken immediately with my wife on white wine and I had the only cask ale on from Purity. Menus provided with excellent waitress recommendations. Food arrived reasonably quickly and we were asked for more drinks. Excellent service again. My Indonesian noodles were fabulous with top spiciness. Plates cleared after finishing eating and desserts and coffee offered. We declined and finished the wine. Then decided we had had sufficient and paid the bill. The whole experience was perfect and I can't recommend this venue anymore than....excellent. 23 years married today and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. PS staff training pays off and shows class in such a competitive area. Thank you to all at Travellers Rest.

Been saying we wanted to try this place for a long time. Finally got round to it and so glad we did. What an absolute treat.. lovely environment, nicely decorated with some quirky extras. Staff were fabulous and made you feel right at home. We were a bit hungry after being stuck in traffic for a while so ordered a few things. To start we ordered cheesy garlic bread, then 3 dishes from the small plates section We ordered: Teriyaki pork - lovely and tender knife slid through it like sliding through butter, really nice sauce. Pigs in blankets glazed in honey mustard - some of the nicest pigs in blankets I've eaten when out .. very move sausage and the bacon cooked to perfection not a burnt bit in sight Chicken dumplings - I'm not a fan of these but had to let the other half pick something, I must admit I did try one and to my surprise I bloody loved it ... It's definitely the best dumpling I've had. Mains: I had the bacon chop with fried eggs, chips and grilled tomato. Really good thick chop hardly any fat cooked well. Really enjoyed it. Other half had salmon wellington with seasonal veg. Pastry was lovely and melted in the mouth, salmon cooked nicely was still nice and moist Excellent food in gorgeous surroundings

Excellent gastro pub. The food was presented beautifully and the tastes were delicious. Service was prompt and with a smile. The country decor was welcoming and very interesting. Highly recommended. First visit, certainly not our last. Well done Andrew and the team.

Called for Lunch after a visit to to Astley Hall which is near by. Greeted with a warm welcome, Very friendly staff, opened up the dining area in the rear as we had two dogs with us ( it is a dog friendly venue ) very good menu with an excellent choice. The food was excellent with service to match.

Been here previously last year, and the food was just as good this time. Lovely little country pub with an outstanding menu. They had been busy and unfortunately sold out of a few items as we were late to the party, so to speak, but what we did have was fabulous 👌🏻 Full credit to the owners and staff for running this absolute gem of a place. Even met Winnie the pooch who is gorgeous 😍 For the record I had the Mei Goreng. Very tasty indeed 👍🏻

Wow - what a find! Fantastic food so beautifully presented in such a relaxed atmosphere. Superb quality and so refreshing to have difficulty choosing from such a varied menu. I never take photos of my food but my chocolate mousse dessert was to die for. Our family will definitely be back.

Just stopped for a drink sat outside because the weather was lovely got served by a lovely young lady and she was very pleasant and cheerful you must visit

Went here on a Saturday evening and it was very quiet. Sat outside with a drink for a bit and then when the weather went a bit more cold went inside. The few tables they have for people not eating is very few and was taken so I asked if we could use any of the other tables as no one was using them and was told no that we had to try and find a seat where only people buying drinks was allowed or sit back outside. Staff really didn’t seem to care at all

Visited today with a friend both ordered fish & chips firstly very dissapointed with the portion size considering the price secondly the chips were overcooked I approached the waitress about this and she replied that all the chips look that way, im guessing it was the manager that then came over and explained that the sugar content is high on potatoes at this time of year so they appear burnt but they are not,, judge for yourself from the pic! I don't think I would return as I feel this pub/,restaurant may be trying to be more of a gourmet place and that not for me..

Been here twice. First time the food was lovely and nice portions to match what I thought was a competitive price. Last Sunday thought would try Sunday lunch. Very big difference. The food was quite poor as well as the portions. Roast potatoes two of them that were given were hard. One carrot cut into half and a bit of peas spinach and ONE slice of beef. This was very poor value for money. Service this time round I felt was very slow. We will go back. But I do not recommend the Sunday roast

We booked a meal here today not knowing how it was going to Be as to my knowledge it seems to have changed owners a few times over the years - but 4 adults and a 10 year old gave it a try . The menu gave a good choice from fillet steaks to sandwiches and a child’s menu - but said child wanted a steak and l Said l would share one with him but he liked it medium and l like mine well done - when asked if they could cut it in half and oblige the chef said it wasn’t possible due to the cut of meat - so we ordered a medium to share - it came and they had sliced it for us - half medium and half well ** hubby had the best fish and chips for years he said - son had the best pie with crust and thick chips and gravy- and d-I-l had chicken & bacon burgers with small fries delicious!- and crusty sour dough and butter and cheesy bread to start - We will certainly be back as the atmosphere was relaxed - music in the background and attentive owners that actually bothered that we were okay and that everything was okay with the meal - IT WAS-** the thoughtful chef made our meal great the steak was delicious Well done to a great restaurant 👍

Quite expensive for what we got , £18 for a burger and fries . There was nothing extra on the plate not even coleslaw or an onion ring . I'm sorry to say I've had a better burger at a wetherspoons. I hate giving poor reviews but for the price I didn't expect an overcooked dry burger . Definitely wouldn't eat there again . We would go for a drink lovely clean pub , lovely staff .

Great chilled atmosphere and delicious food. The soup was flavoursome and as smooth as silk, the meat in the Sunday meal was so tender and moist even though it was late in the day. My husband had had the venison and I had beef... Both delicious!!

Food pricey for basic mains ie gammon, pie etc . Pineapple on gammon black, complained more pineapple brought to table didn't look burnt, but tasted slightly burnt, sticky toffee pudding just awful burnt on the bottom and it was so hard could barely get spoon thru left most of it . Toffee sauce and custard ok. My friend's pie was so dry. Not much veg on offer with main meals. 3 lime and sodas 3 mains and 2 desserts £80 . Very expensive and very disappointing. Will not be going back !

So good! The food was lovely. Really good traditional British food, great produce cooked well. The staff couldn’t do enough. And the interior and ambience was really lovely. Had a meal on Saturday night and it was so good we went back for a roast the next day.
