The Travellers Rest in Staffordshire Moorlands

I am hugely disappointed in the attitude and service at this pub. My wife and I have been customers at this establishment for many years, i lovely typical 'country' pub and always been happy with the service, on this occassion, visiting with 2 other couples we found our experience very disappointing. I have to say the two courses for £14.95 is a bargain with some decent meal choices, my gripe is that my wife is a ceoliac (gluten/wheat intolerant) and was given a seperate menu, when she asked if she could have two courses from that menu for £14.95 she was told, by the abrupt, rude older waitress that she would have to consult the manager and after consulting him as a one off it would be OK. There was vegan options on the normal menu offer, which is a lifestyle choice, but no GF so any ceoliacs would have to order from the GF menu, at extra expense. That was just the start, drinks to the table took an eternity to arrive, the chips looked liked they had been cooked, time and time again and when one of our party asked for a coffee was presented with half a cup, which was, when asked, topped up with hot water which made it very weak tasting. I have to say the young girl waitress was polite and courtious and did everything she could to oblige us, the older lady was, i thought rude and I would have said something to her but did not want to make a scene in front of friends. We will therefore be giving this establishment a break for a while

First time for my wife and I taking our friend. Margaret who is a regular to lunch we all had the two courses for £14.95 offer which is good value. Really enjoyed it nice warm atmosphere and service good and friendly. Car park rather tight but there isn't much they can do about that.

Great relaxed evening with friends. Fantastic service, attentive but not rushed. Lovely food, excellent value for money. Definitely be back

Beautiful country pub in a stunning location. Went for lunch on a Friday without booking and was a little fortunate to get a table. So i would advise booking especially if going at busier times. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Service quick and efficient and food generally of a decent standard and reasonable prices. I will definitely be returning. If i was to be ultra critical I would say the cherry crumble did not live up to the quality of the first two courses. It was basically made from a cheap cherry pie filling I presume. Next time I will certainly be choosing a different desert

Friendly pub serving good pub food. Plenty of choice on the menu and great portion sizes! Was very busy when we visited but staff were excellent. Will definitely return.

Booked to have a family Sunday lunch, was very busy which I always take for a good sign. Waiting on staff were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. More importantly lunch was delicious, would highly recommend. Great choice of desserts which we all agreed were very tasty too.

Just had to put a review after the fantastic lunch we had and service we received! Nothing was too much trouble and food was both excellent and value for money. We were there celebrating my Mum’s 94th birthday just lovely would highly recommend!

Visited on Sunday 7th July, despite being very busy the service was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful! The food was fab and great value for money. Will definitely be visiting again soon!!

Just been for dinner family of 4 had our starter waited a long time for our main course it was quite busy table was booked for 3 30 someone came to us at 5 o clock said we had to leave the table because it was reserved for somebody we only had the table for 1 and half hours we didn’t even have time to have a dessert very disappointed July 7th

We visited this fab country pub for the first time today...food was fantastic as was the service...all the staff were extremely helpful & it was definitely service with a smile. Also excellent value for money and a really nice atmosphere.

Went yesterday for the first time with family after hearing good things about it from friends - was not disappointed! Between us roast dinners were had, steak pie, chicken with Stilton & leek sauce and prawn sandwich with chips. Everyone loved their meals, the drinks were good and not super expensive. For desserts, cherry crumble, biscoff cheesecake, Sicilian lemon tart, and sticky toffee pudding were had, absolutely delightful as was the service, will definitely be back!

Friendly efficient staff, quick service, food was very nice and good size portion, good atmosphere in the restaurant.

Popped in for a drink on our way past. Ended up having a bowl of chips too. 🙈 Nice friendly staff. Quick service and proper chips. (They also did greek chips which sounded great - I've added a photo) We really enjoyed them. Good selection of ales and bitters. I would recommend to anyone and we will be back to try out the menu.

We arrived at Travellers Rest with a warm greeting from staff. We sat on the front with a fantastic view of the city and the staff were more than helpful. The food was impeccable, staff checked on us to see if the food was OK, it was delicious. The desserts were catered to perfection especially the chocolate brownie. We felt so relaxed and at home we didn't want to leave. 5* rating all round.

We have just returned from our second stay with family at Steve's fabulous cottages. Weather was truly awful for May but the friendly welcome from Steve, his team and the locals was as usual second to none. Lots of nearby venues closed for outside dining but unlike the weather The food and hospitality at The Travellers Rest did not let us down. The cottages are so clean, modern and cosy with excellent covid safety measures in place. Thank you all so much, we will be back again...soon !

Ate here as quite local to us. Covid measures were excellent and felt safe. Staff were great. No Track and Trace code though.Ordered 2 steak pies and home cooked chips. The pie came as a slice, chips looked like they were out of a bag, ready gravy. Presented well but very average food. Don’t think we will return, better food elsewhere.

So friendly good food, safe environment Steve and his staff are all brilliant and under current times it’s very safe

We've just enjoyed a family lunch time visit. Its the first time we've eaten out since March due to Covid. We felt safe and the staff were very mindful of all the rules & regulations as well as being friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. Delicious fresh produce of an excellent quality. We would highly recommended the Travelers Rest. Thank you and well be back again very soon.

Spent a very enjoyable week in Jasmine Cottage next door - lovely cottage, tastefully decorated and very comfortable. My Partner and I enjoyed five evening meals from the Travellers Rest. Generous portions, well cooked, friendly staff and really good value. Thoroughly recommended.

Having only made a last minute decision to eat out, we phoned on Grill Night and a very pleasant gentleman booked us a table.All I can say is that the evening was perfect! The pub itself is very aesthetically pleasing, the food was lovely (particularly desert which we weren't going to have until we saw how good it looked at another table!), the staff were smiley and attentive, but also the pub seems to have got the perfect balance of being covid secure whilst retaining an atmosphere.Highly recommended...We'll definitely be back again soon!

Called here for Sunday lunch. The staff were very pleasant. The food was very good and plentiful and would definitely return.

This was our 1st visit to The Travellers Rest. I booked a table over the phone with a lady who didn’t seem to have the time to answer my questions.We arrived for a birthday meal with 4 other guests. The food was bland and with social distancing to be adhered too I felt putting other guests on the table next to us (literally back to back) was not acceptable. We finished our mains and left.When we went there was supposed to be 20% discount, but the waitress told me you had to ask for it was not automatic.m

Met friends for a meal what a great pub. The safety measures they have put in place due to Covid was excellent. The food was excellent and very well priced with good portion size. A very well run pub so much better than the chain run places. We will defiantly return.

I visited for Monday night pie night for the first time and it was fantastic. Good portion size. The pie was delicious and the service throughout was very good. The honeycombe desert was also very very good.

The atmosphere is always friendly and precautions for everyone's safety are in place. The food is better than ever and the staff are excellent.

Lovely lunch on Wednesday, felt very safe, one way system, sanitiser and table service. Friendly and helpful staff. Food excellent, braising steak to die for , lovely fresh veg and yummy chips. Me and my mum really enjoyed it and it was her first meal out since March. Thank you

Visited this gem today. I cannot fault it, the service was very attentive, the venue was clean and adhering very well to the covid guidelines and absolutely delicious food, I will be returning very soon.

We visited The Travellers Rest this lunch-time, our first visit since the premises re-opened following lockdown. We felt a little apprehensive, not knowing what to expect, but our worries were soon laid to rest.The landlord has put in plenty of safety measures, but they are all discreet and do not take anything away from the ambience. The tables have been spaced to allow social distancing, plastic screens have been placed at the bar and in some key areas, and sanitiser dispensers are placed in several locations.A member of staff came to take our drinks and food order, as it is now all table service, as standing at the bar is no longer allowed. We noticed that the staff were sanitising the trays after each use, and as soon as a table was vacated it was cleared and sanitised. Very reassuring to see.We enjoyed our lunch-time drink and meal, and certainly felt that every precaution for our safety had been implemented. We look forward to our next visit.

Was treated to a lunchtime meal by our friends in celebration of our wedding anniversary. The food was exceptional and our friends, who are pescatarians, had a wonderful meal. Thank you

Wonderful food with good service is had each time we visit. It’s nice to get real chips these days, the selection is good and the food is always cooked to perfection. Lovely little pub in a nice location.

The atmosphere was spot on as well as the staff and food. We all had a super time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Excellent food at a reasonable price which was well presented and prepared. Will definitely be going back again and can certainly recommend.

Went here with friends for evening meal, very nice place to eat out. Friendly staff, efficient. Food was good home cooking, nothing fancy, really enjoyed it. gets my vote. The Monday pie night is very popular so book ahead but worth it, enjoyed the cottage and chips.

The most recent visit was yesterday and as normal the service and food was excellent. The portion size is brilliant especially with the specials. Plenty of vegetables as a side to your meal. My Nan says she always feels like she has been out for a meal as it’s so nice compared to the normal sit eat and out places.

have visited the travellers many times, on each occasion we received a warm friendly welcome. the food is exceptional, all locally sourced! it is also plentyfull, a pub well worth a visit. one tip though, if you do intend to visit, please make sur you book as it is very popular

Last minute decision to eat out, rose and crown was first port of call but stopped serving at 5pm. Called here on off chance never been in before but recommended by ex employee.. Can thoroughly say had a lovely meal, pleasant and prompt service. Will definitely be returning I. The not too distant future

Having visited here on numerous occasions over the years but of late we are finding the service is not as good as normal. Especially tonite we had a table for 630 ordered our food 10 minutes earlier at 6.20 pm only to be served at 745.not only a late service but a table of 6 came in after us and were served before us. When this was mentioned to the staff of 26 yrs we were told to mention it to the manager. Not a good service at all.

Great service and lovely setting the Christmas decorations are brilliantly done a credit to steve and the team all staff and regular customers make you feel welcome , homemade traditional food very good quality at good price what else can you ask for ,

The menu is quite extensive which in my opinion is always a bad thing as it is very hard to juggle the amount of dishes to be served. The restaurant is well laid out with tables not being so close. The food came out very quick which I suspect were all dished out prior to opening the restaurant and I certainly suspect a microwave was involved. I hated the long plates which all the meals were served on and the presentation was not good at all. I felt like I was sat at my grannies home and she had served the meal. All the meals were edible however not tasty. All in all a very poor experience. Also the waitress when serving the food accidently put her long polished nail into the gravy. Luckily it wasnt my food and my husbands. Yuk. We were handed the bill and they had put all of someone elses food and drink on. We wont be going back. I would say if you like very plain food you will be fine but dont expect anything more.

Excellent meal , quality meals for the three of us and piping hot too. Great service and the Xmas atmosphere and decor was very good .

The food was alright but I was disappointed that they had vegan options for mains but none for starters or desserts leaving a member of the party left out?

My partner booked this as a treat for my birthday & it was fantastic! Could not fault the service, the food,the atmosphere & the setting. Absolutely lovely evening made even more magical with the most beautiful Christmas decorations I have ever seen. Wish I lived closer so we could go more often. I cannot recommend this wonderful place enough!

This is a lovely country pub with a great friendly atmosphere and coal fires. The food is the best around. Would recommend the braising steak as it is mouthwatering.

We came Friday 8th November for my husbands birthday , along with my brother and his wife. It was very busy.

We visited mid week for lunch, we were made to feel welcome as soon as we walked in the the bar area, we asked about a table in the restaurant and were taken through straight away, the service was excellent there was quite a lot to choose of the menu including lunch time specials, we opted for the 2 courses the food was delicious, hot and plenty on your plate. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We are already looking forward to going again.

Four of us had a night out to celebrate a birthday. It's the first time we'd been to the restaurant for some time. Three of us chose the sirloin steak, which was cooked to our liking whilst my wife opted for the braised steak with chips and vegetables. The food was excellent and served quickly despite the restaurant being almost full. The young staff who waited on also deserve a mention for their friendly and efficient service.

As we were staying in Jasmine Cottage next door to the pub it was a no brainier not to eat there and were we glad we did, the food is not pretentious, but well cooked, plentiful and not overpriced. The staff, including Steve the manager (who owns the cottage) were very friendly. No complaints on any level Thank you.

We visited midweek, on a Wednesday night. We both chose to have a sirloin steak off the Grill Night menu. We added a side order of cheesy garlic bread and a bottle of Merlot, the wine being at a special price as we were ordering from the Grill Night menu. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal and thought that the offer was excellent value for money. The staff were great - friendly and welcoming, and provided A-1 service. We really enjoyed our evening, and would definitely reccommend a visit.

Went tonight first time .Lovely place, pleasant staff and gorgeous food we all chose the pies which are two for ten pounds.the pies are delicious and home made chips to die for. really relaxing place will defiantly come again try something g different next time

Went to lunch with a few ladies. Lovely country pub and restaurant, brilliant setting, ambiance and service. I had a chicken and bacon salad - absolutely gorgeous. Plenty of meat and an extensive tasty salad. My friends loved their meals too, proper chips (the best i’ve Ever tasted). I highly recommend this little gem.

Had friends visit, no problem where to take them for a meal, plenty to choose from on the menu, still rated as a top restaurant, service impeccable, food if possible improving again, can only say go there you won't be disappointed.

This popular pub is located in the picturesque village of Stanley. The premises are clean and well presented and the bar is well stocked with the usual wines and spirits as well as ciders, lagers and 4 real ales including Bass and Marston's Pedigree. The menu is varied and the food is cooked and presented to a high standard. The service was excellent and the staff were very efficient and friendly. The prices offer very good value for money and I have no hesitation in strongly recommending a visit to the Travellers Rest.

Second visit to the restaurant during our weel in the area. Lovely food, great service, the 4 staff, of ehich 2 were trainees i think, were very polite and helpful. Food exceptionally priced, very filling and delicious. Would highly recommend as a venue

I went with my wife last Sunday evening for a meal, having been sometime since we visited the pub/resteraunt and we were just as pleased as when we last visited It was very busy but we had booked a table so there was no problem.

We stayed in the cottage next door and in our last night we had dinner at The Travellers Rest. What a nice pub and what a great dinner. Good portions and friendly staff. Too bad we live in Holland.... otherwise we would become regular visitors!

Love the food here especially the pie night although you have to book as it’s very busy. Had a number if menu items all been excellent and prices are very good

my starter was vegatable soup this had comeout of a packet served with microwaved plastic bread rolls, have beef and mushroom pie for main which was fair but had been reheted in a microwave so it was unbelievebly hot as were the dissapointing side vegetables, i know that the kitchen staff can do a lot better so iam not really sure what has gone wrong, this latest meal echo's the experince of friends who also usded to go a lot, their last meaal waass so bad they ended up not being charged but even so have vowed not to go back again

Absolutely love eating here! The staff are always really friendly, food is delicious! You have to pre book really as its so popular, but to die for! Honestly our favourite place to eat, we are becoming regulars here! Tried nearly everything on the menu, and cant fault any of it yet. Only down side is the car park is small and sometimes is hard to get a space and its in a rural area so cant really park in the street.

We came here a few weeks ago for a pub lunch on a rainy day. The steak and Ale pie tasted incredible, and the chips were so fluffy. Friendly service and cozy environment

Stopped for lunch after reading recommendations at our holiday cottage. In spite of being busy on a Friday lunch time we ate in the bar area. Good choice on the menu, freshly cooked food, good service and nice ambience. Good value for money and friendly staff too.

This has been the favourite local pub choice for my partner and I for some time now.

Excellent food. Very polite and helpful staff. Lovely interior with oak beams and cosy fire. Only downside was steps into dining area a bit awkward for my elderly mother but staff opened side door on the way out to avoid these.

Party of five adults. Excellent service from staff with food to match. Five different dishes and some of the best pub food I've ever eaten. Would highly recommend and I will return, thank you.

This was a last minute Sunday evening decision four of us decided to grab dinner out. The staff and service was exceptional and the cosy restuarant area hade a nice atmosphere.

Came for hubbys birthday lunch with family.We all had different meals lasagna braised steak fish and chips and liver and onions all the meals were very nice good portions and good prices . We always enjoy our meals here and will be back again for more. Good selection of beers staff very friendly what more could you wish for.

Steve & Steve run such a wonderful place They care very much about the customer experience- the service is always great and the food delicious Plus they have 2 lovely cottages next door for rent - for a weekend or longer It’s magical at Christmas

This was our first time in The Travellers we had heard about it and decided to give it a try we had traditional Sunday lunch and apple pie very very nice, the staff were friendly and attentive good choice of wines, beers etc and the pub was very clean. Even a mini power cut couldn't spoil the day. Give them a try I don't think you will be disappointed but be warned book up before going or else you may be disappointed. There may be an issue with wheel chair access to the lower floor as there are a few steps inside the pub.

We booked a table for 4 between Christmas and new year. The restaurant and bar were decorated beautifully - I don’t think I have seen any pub decorated so well. Our food was lovely and everyone in our party enjoyed the evening. One word of caution...beware the elder waiting-on gentleman, he is constant presence fussing over tables. He knocked a drink over on the table next to us, soaking the 2 ladies.

This is a very pleasant pub with nice staff. The Christmas decorations were stunning. It's pub grub menu not gastro however nicely cooked and nicely presented and the price does not give you bill shock. Worth popping in if you are in the area

I live within a 15 minute walk of the Travs and I could use 3 other pubs which are nearer but none of them are a patch on the balance of price, quality and service that you get at the Travs. Take last night for example our party of 4 had 3 turkey dinners and 1 salmon dinner . All I am going to say is that it was one of the best meals that I have ever had in a pub and believe me I have eaten a few in my nearly 60 years on this earth. A very good pint of Abbott as well

A few months ago it was as though the management had taken there "finger off the boil"and the food was getting a lots of bad reviews! Now I can truly say the pub is back to its best and now the Christmas decorations are up I challenge anyone to find a better display. Well done Steve.

I am a regular visitor to the Travellers Rest as it's always been reputable for it's homecooked food.

Family meal for 13 on a Saturday lunchtime, fabulous place, spotlessly clean, staff very attentive, and the Landlords are a credit to their trade, nothing too much trouble, great home cooked food at reasonable prices. Never been before, no idea why because we will be going back that's for sure!

Visited today with my husband and elderly cousin had a beautiful meal served pipping hot by friendly helpful staff. The xmas decorations were beautiful and are worth a visit to see.

We visited the Travellers Rest for a late lunch on the afternoon of Saturday 17th November.

We've been here several times now. The night we visited was pie night and we hadn't booked. However, we managed to grab a table in the bar as there was no room in the restaurant for a couple of hours! I had the pie, chips and peas. The wife opted for a salmon. Both meals lovely. Always nice to visit this pub when we are in the area.

Firstly, let me be honest. This is somewhere that my husband and I go to regularly as a couple or with friends. It is in a lovely setting and the restaurant is very nicely decorated and extremely well maintained. For the most part, the food is well presented and decent pub grub, reasonably priced and served by attentive staff. I have given better ratings to this pub in the past. I continue to go there because more often than not, there isn't much to complain about. Furthermore, I'm not really much of a complainer. However, I do wonder why chefs dish out poor quality food. My example is that I ordered a 10oz gammon steak - I often do, it is a favourite. Sometimes it is perfect, other times ok. On Sunday, although it tasted fine, it was the fattiest cut I have ever come across anywhere. It should never have made it on to a plate, And that is my complaint. Instead of waiting to see if a customer makes a complaint, in which case, a replacement would be sourced (whilst the complainant patiently waits whilst other diners in the party enjoy their meal), throw it away. On this occasion, I did bring it to the attention of a waitress, who duly asked if I wanted her to take it back. Rather than do that, I simply asked for a plate so that I could cut a third of it off. I ate my 'nowhere near 10oz' gammon steak. Now, I'm sure the owner would have preferred me to return it rather than write this, but I would prefer it if the chef took pride in his/her work and considered the poor paying customer before serving up something so sub-standard in a decent establishment. In future though, it will go straight back.

Happy to take a family booking for 16 people including one 4 yr old and one 8 year ,one 12 yr old ,one 15 yr old and one 17 yr old and saying quite reasonably that we would have to vacate our tables ready for the next booking but failing to state that children are not allowed in the bar areas at all times - would not have made the booking if they'd told us - so upon finishing our meals we were politely thrown out and the arrogant and almost snotty landlord stated "we aren't a Wacky Warehouse"when we questioned this !! my youngest grand daughters were very well behaved throughout our stay but this arrogant man obviously tars all children with the same brush so in all a disappointing end to what was a pleasant family gathering inspite of the mediocre food served up..

We have been to the travellers rest in Stanley on numerous occasions over the last 30yrs and we have never experienced a bad meal . We went in April 2017 for my mums 80th birthday a party of eight and had an excellent meal . We have booked a table on Sunday lunch with friends from Stafford , midweek and Saturday , daytime and evening and they’ve always got us in and always been first class with both the food and the service . The beer has always been top class and we also know others that return time and time again . Steve and his staff are number one in my book and always will be . Hope to return again very soon . Probably on the run up to Christmas . Now how did that sneak up on me

Went to the Travellers, Stanley for a celebratory birthday lunch.

Ordered the suet pudding and needed a hammer and chisel to break the pastry. Mum ordered the lasagne and it was sloppy and had a strange taste. Won't be going back 👎😞

Didn’t book on Sunday but they managed to fit us in... lovely atmosphere, great pub and the food was fab... I would recommend the salmon, new potatoes, salad and peas my hubby had the pie and cheesecake Looking forward to my next visit 😊

We visited the travellers rest on Thursday as a family and all had the most wonderful meals! The pies are amazing and the chips are so yummy! Great service and really warm and friendly staff :) really cosy all round nice place and will definitely be visiting again soon!
