Whilst we wandered on the Canal we decided to stop at Cheddleton for lunch. Walking up the road we came across the Red Lion and reminded ourselves it was Sunday! Having elected to have the Sunday lunch we were not disappointed at all. The safest pub in these covid days I’ve visited they are really trying to make sure everyone is safe whilst providing a great service. The food was delicious and the gravy was thick and full of flavour! Really full and kids portions were perfectly sized. A wonderful place to stop and relax and be taken care of! Thanks all at the Red Lion staff

My wife and I stopped in for a drink and some mid-week pub grub while staying overnight in Leek.We were instantly warmly welcomed by a number of locals, the bar staff and the gaffer himself - Peter.Coming from London and venturing in to the country pubs of Staffordshire, we really felt at home here.We had a couple of drinks while chatting and thinking about dinner. There was only the one veggie option for me on the menu but it really was worth the short wait. I had the vegetarian lasagna with a huge side salad and a large portion of homemade chips ... with a cheesy garlic ciabatta on the side. I couldn't finish everything as there was just too much for me. That's by no means a negative, more so a tip for anybody going there to eat --- go hungry :-)Thank you to the locals and the staff/gaffer, you made a bland Wednesday evening in to a good night out. We'll see you again soon.Steve (the Cockaneezer) and Amanda

We first visited the Red Lion about three years ago, and I wrote a rave review. The food warranted a Wow! factor. Most of the food pictures on here seem to date from then.Since then, it seems to have gone downhill at lot. There appears to have been a change of management and chef. The staff were friendly enough and the service fine, but the food is now pretty average pub fayre, instead of something you rave to your friends about.Biggest grumble was the loudspeaker in the restaurant area, which was pointlessly and loudly relaying the soundtrack from the sports TV in the other bar.The Red Lion seems to now be 'just another pub'. Would I return? Probably not... I'd rather eat at Castro's, just next door. The food is far better. And it's quieter.

After a long day we just wanted a nice pub meal and the Red Lion didn’t disappoint. It’s not fancy or a gastro pub but traditional .Really friendly and helpful staff and a very good selection of beers. I ordered a double cheeseburger which was excellent and came with a soft white bun instead of the dreaded brioche variety which other places seem to think they have to offer. My wife had hunters chicken which was also very good. Would recommend. Good value.

We called on speck on our way back from Leek as we saw a sign for lunch. The bar maid was outside smoking at the time of our arrival and we followed her in.She wasn’t very helpful, no seating downstairs, we were sent upstairs where it was very cold and basically horrible. We sat and waited 45 mins for ours meals- there was 3 of us. When the food arrived they were huge portions. Home cooked chips were absolutely gorgeous, Shephards pie was massive, very greasy but could of done with more variety of veg. Chicken sizzler- perfect. Steak - literally half of a tough old cow lol. Don’t think I will visit again.

We went here for Sunday lunch this weekend. We were driving around looking for somewhere to eat and saw the sign Sunday roast £5.95.We went in and were greeted very warmly by the lady host who said she could accommodate us without a booking. they had beef or turkey on so we both ordered beef. When it came out it was a good helping, with mash and roast potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, green beans, a Yorkshire and some stuffing. there was plenty of gravy also. The only negative points were the plates weren't hot so the food didn't stay warm and it was a bit lacking in presentation. However for £5.95 it was good value.

So we recently moved to Cheddleton and I have now been here twice. The first time with my friend and we had the baguette and chips. Huge soft baguette, massive side salad and coleslaw. The bowl of chips I added on for an extra couple of pound and it was also massive, with the most gorgeous big home made chips! We then visited Sunday 21st for my mums birthday, and booked a table for 7, of which 6 of us ordered the Sunday dinner, myself included. It was absolutely gorgeous, big homemade Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, mash and roasts, carrots, green beans, broccoli and cauliflower all cooked to perfection. I’m veggie and there was unfortunately no veggie option for the Sunday dinner...which is my only negative. They did do me vegetarian gravy though. However I would not have been able to fit anything else in as it was huge, and for the bargain price of only £5.95! Those who had the beef and turkey said it was absolutely gorgeous. My sister had the vegetable lasagne which was huge, came lots of chips and salad and she said it was delicious. Overall I would 100% recommend this pub!Beautiful Sunday dinners at amazing prices and homemade chips to die for...Looking forward to our next visit already...

I had the chicken sizzler and it was one of the best skillet served meals I’ve had, plus the homemade chips were awesome too. My partner and I called the pub 2 days ago and asked if they could cook up something special, using game. We fancied something a bit different and that's what we got! I've eaten in some good restaurants(and this is a pub) in the past but the standard of the food here tonight far outweighed these. The pheasant was cooked to perfection and presentation superb. The chef came out and asked what we thought, as if he didn't know!We were offered cocktails after our meal and told them that we didn't really like pub cocktails, as they're usually not up to the standard that we're used to. The manageress asked us to give them a go, and once more we were extremely impressed by the standard. We both left wondering why the pub wasn't full, even on a Tuesday. Simply the best gourmet pub food in North Staffordshire by a country mile. Well done and thank you.

Four friends went for an early Friday evening meal and had a very good evening out. The beer(Bass) was first class and obviously well kept. Service was prompt and friendly and we all chose different things from a menu that was short enough to convince us that at least some of it would be cooked on the premises. We started with two shared starters- arancini and hummus with flatbread. Sadly, the arancini was a pale imitation of what it should have been, lacking taste and texture. As for the main courses, the chicken was well received, the salmon was fine, the gammon was good and the ribeye steak was declared to be "the best one I've ever had". The only disappointment here was that the mango and pomegranate salad accompanying the chicken did not contain any mango. However, we all felt that we'd had a good meal and we will certainly return.

My husband, myself and my 13 year old son ate here for the first time on Saturday 3 September. We hadn't booked but decided to take a chance. We arrived about 7.15pm. I really like the restaurant interior. It is rustic with stripped wooden floors and furniture. Nice view over the beer garden outside. As a white wine drinker who really doesn't rate Charddonay very much I was delighted that the waiter could advise me about the wines they had and he recommended a New Zealand Chenin Blanc which was very fruity and citrussy. We didn't have a starter. My son had the rib-eye steak - he asked for it medium rare and that was exactly how it came. He thought his fries were "gorgeous - lovely and crispy". My husband had the lamb chops and the fries. He is VERY fussy when it comes to meat and he said it was "cooked to perfection", not too fatty. Some restaurants seem to believe that resting meat involves leaving it to go cold - which my husband hates. Not here though - the meat was just right. Although I'm not a veggie I had the Gnocchi, (I just love Gnocchi) with a side of garlic bread. This was absolutely delish with lovely crunchy baby carrots and a tangy dressing. I didn't leave a crumb on my plate. We all had desserts. My husband and I both had the sticky toffee roulard. I think it would have been tastier warm but I am a big sticky toffee pudding fan, but it was nice with ice cream. A party of ten arrived, some of whom were small children. The staff were very good and didn't keep them waiting too long to get served. I look forward to my next visit to the Red Lion. Well done guys. What an improvement you have made to the place.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This is my second review of the Red Lion - I really enjoyed my previous two evening visits and gave them a very good review and was looking forward to trying their Sunday lunch.Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. After waiting a long time for the food to be served (frustrating given that the main bar where we were seated was literally empty, as was the dining room as there was apparently going to be a function later on) when it arrived I found it mediocre to poor.I had the roast beef at £12 for which I’d expect a generous portion of good quality, local meat along with all the trimmings. However, most of the beef was inedible as the 2 slices had tough lines of gristle running through the centre. It was such a pity as it looked like it had been cooked well, still a little pink, but those slices should not have been served. As we’d waited so long I did not send it back but did point it out to the staff when she came to clear the plates. She said she’d tell the chef but it was probably something to do with the length of time it had been cooked – I don’t think that’s a satisfactory answer and she didn’t apologise or offer to reduce the bill or suggest any other recompense. My partner had the roast pork, which was very tasty, but said that he’d expect to pay around £7, not £10, for the overall quality and size of the meal. Our accompanying friend, however, enjoyed her Quorn roast very much.On this visit, the service was also pretty poor in parts – my partner and I were served our desserts, (which turned out to be very good), then the server went off to get cutlery, came back, then went off again to get cream, but took so long that we’d virtually eaten them before she finally returned. And our friend’s ice cream didn’t arrive until we'd actually finished! All this was very frustrating as there seemed to be at least 4 staff on duty in an otherwise empty pub.Overall then, not a happy visit, and we’d so wanted to like this place it being very local to us. I’d like to think we will return again to give them another chance, but definitely not for the Sunday lunch.

They also allow dogs in the bar area – a good move in an area where dogs are so popular. We enjoyed our weekday evening visit so much we returned the following Saturday with friends.Over the 2 visits, we enjoyed a wide range of dishes; especially enjoyable are the sharing plates which we had as starters and included chicken wings, slow cooked belly pork, vegetable pakoras with a delicious beetroot dip, arancini rice balls, and meat balls in a lovely smoked jalapeno sauce. Mains were good too: very tasty rib eye steak cooked exactly as requested, cod in panko crumb and lamb cutlets – all served with excellent chips. The only one criticism was that the cod was very slightly overcooked, but it was still very good.Lots of lovely desserts to choose from too and it’s a nice touch to be able to make your selection from the display.Atmosphere is very friendly and the décor has been greatly improved – quite modern but still feels like a proper pub.One thing the pub does lack is an online presence (we weren’t able to find the menus, food service times etc.) so it would be good to have some info available - maybe even just a Facebook page? Looking forward to trying the Sunday lunch soon!

4times I have tried to have a meal here, as people tell me the food is lovely. This time I phoned to check they were open, and doing meals, this was Tuesday 19thApril, Told yea madam we are open no problem with a table for 2. At 7pm. So as we were due to go home on the Wednesday I knew that I didn't have to cater for our dinner. We were staying in the Caravan Park, so walked along the canal. Lovely evening. Got to the pub only to find doors locked and a notice saying 'closed for staff training ' so we had to walk back and were lucky that THE BOAT were still serving meals.

We visited as a large group for dinner with ages ranging from 8 months to 80+ year and dietary requirements including vegetarian and gluten free. The staff were lovely and very accommodating. We eat out a lot at a wide variety of establishments and were very pleasantly surprised by the choice on offer. We ordered a variety of starters, mains and desserts. Nothing was left to waste! Oh, and the toilets were warm. Never fails to surprise me why so many places don't heat their toilets properly. No such problem here! Would definitely like to pay a return visit if we're in the area again.

The red Lion has just re opened and what a warm welcome by Rob and the staff. The menu was excellent and the food came well presented and very tasty. I had the gammon as a gentleman on the next table recommended it and I was not disappointed it was very tasty with lovely chunky chips and nicely cooked eggs. The atmosphere was a great change from the previous landlord and the refurbished decor added to the ambience of a small local public house i will be returning very soon My wife had the vegetarian dish was a little dry but the gin and tonic washed it down very nicely

My husband and i went to the Red Lion for lunch as it is very local and we knew it was under new management and we wanted to check it out. It was really excellent. They have a selection of about 10 dishes in Tapas style for sharing. We had 4 dishes between us. I particularly recommend the chicken wings and home made taramasalata, 3 will be enough next time. Great for lunchtime as we don't usually wish a large meal. There is a good selection of grills and a variety of vegetarian dishes - not to mention yummy looking desserts!

Cannot fault. Excellent food and very good wine. Friendly welcoming people. Interesting snack menu for sharing and a menu that is more than normal pub food. The venue deserves to do well for new people.

I've been working here on the refurbishment, apologies for being biased BUT from everybody I have spoken to who have been calling in, it is a refreshingly totally different venue! Bright, friendly, smart, great selection of drinks along with a funky new delicious menu, and very switched on staff.

I took my two children here for a treat and wow, this place has certainly improved. I've been a few times for drinks before its revamp and now it's fantastic. My children are fairly young ( 9 and 10) and they were made to feel more than welcome. There's no children's menu but the staff made the portions smaller and disguised under 'posh' titles were fish and chips and meatballs and pasta which were both winners. We shared some starters or nibbles and these were very tasty. I can highly recommend the prosecco and merlot too! Not the cheapest night out but lovely to have a decent meal in the village and made to feel very special! Would highly recommend this place. Can't wait to go again.

The food was piping hot and very good quality. The staff and management couldn't do enough for us. My dad is in a wheelchair and they made it easy for us to accomodate his wheelchair. I woild certainly return in the future.

Called last week and the place is currently closed. Given the people who were appointed to run this place recently this is not surprising. This is a nice pub with good potential but it needs capable and competent staff to run it. What on earth are the brewery playing at?

Been a local regular of this pub for a long time. The very young manager has no enthusiasm or ideas of how to run a local pub & spends hours on end sat on his laptop ignoring his customers & staff alike. The food it hit & miss & at the best cooked in the microwave. Gone are the days of proper home cooked foods that this pub is known for.I would rather eat at McDonald's the staff & food have better appeal. The dining area is dull & lacks any appeal for the festive period & any other decor was tacky to say the less. There is plenty more new management around this area right now & I shall pick & choose before going back here again.

This place was dirty. Staff awful. Went here for a function. They were totally unprepared for 70+ people arriving together all at one time. Landlord and Landlady were,in my opinion, inexperienced and looked hung over/rough. They could not deal with the influx of people even though they knew we were arriving! My goodness!!!...toilets were freezing with little to no toilet roll. It took 25-30 minutes to get a drink at the bar. Never would I go here again, unless under new management.

Called in for food seen as it still has the big sign up saying serving food but we where told they couldn't serve food as they hadn't been to the suppliers and it was just one of them things. Not really one of them things is it??. Just organise yourself. Stayed for a drink but it's not like it used to be.

Dropped in one Wednesday in june for the gourmet burger night. Had the burger with cheese and bacon with chips, also we ordered a side of onion rings. The onion rings were home made which scores points but were pretty damn greasy, we couldn't eat them. Didn't need them though - the chips were massive, generous portions, just the right mix of fluffy inside/crispy outside (and not greasy). The burger was pretty great - utterly massive, especially depthwise - coming up for 2 inches thick - and that's just the patty - you need a flip-top head to eat them properly! I can't find any fault with the flavour of the burger, the tangy relish, the crispy bacon etc. If you visit this place on a Wednesday night you should try the burgers - very very nice indeed. Pass on the onion rings. Staff deserve a mention for friendliness and the lady I've seen there before, think is landlady, was really welcoming, like she'd got old friends visiting. If I lived a bit nearer I'd walk down there a couple of times a week.

We had a walk along the canal yesterday and stopped off here for a drink and hopefully something to eat. When we arrived mid afternoon, the barmaid said they'd stopped doing food, but would check for us. She came back to say that it would be no problem for them to do something for us and got us a couple of menus. We chose a couple of burgers, which came with chips and salad. When the food arrived it was beautifully presented, proper homemade chips and the burgers were to do die for....obviously homemade and absolutely huge! Gorgeous food for a very reasonable price. Will definitely be coming back.

Parked up to see the bar maid get out of the car with a bag from the corner shop. Inside tried to order a drink to be told the beer was off and red wine was out of stock. Left in the bar to order dinner and told 2 mains were not available. Then agreed to a bottle of the only red wine that had been purchased from the corner shop at the same time as a pint of beer arriving. Then sat for over an hour waiting for chef to cook a rare steak, a burger and some pasta carbonara. Tried to engage the waitress with why we had been sat waiting for an hour and she told us everything had to be cooked from fresh. Slightly perplexed as to how a rare steak requires an hour to be cooked. Perhaps that explained why it came to the table grey. Told we would need to speak to the landlady if we were unhappy. However, when we asked to do this she didn't have the courtesy to meet us yet still managed to charge us for the entire evening meal. Couple on adjacent table asked for wine cooler for their warm corner shop wine and given a jug of ice instead and had to put ice cubes in to their wine glasses. Nuff said.

Found this restaurant by accident one Saturday evening. Not as busy as it should have been so the atmosphere was rather quiet. We were given a very warm welcome and seated very quickly in a rather quaintly decorated homely room. We ordered Sea Bass fishcakes with home made chips (jkt potato offered as an alternative) & salad with olives. As more guests arrived the room was such that we spoke with these people of how impressed we were all were with the food. There was also a gentleman eating outside who told us they'd very kindly offered to permit him to put a tent up in the garden where there was also a climbing frame. A delightful place well worth a visit.

We were pleasantly surprised by this pub. We spent a good 30 mins trying to find somewhere to eat in Leek Market, for the family. There were plenty to choose from, however we were set on wanting a good ale and food. Initially from the boards outside it would seem that they only do toasties and sandwiches, further inspection however shows that there may be other food available, though you do not know what until you ask for the menu. Our first meal, we were informed that some items had sold out, and being a bank holiday, I see this as forgivable. I ordered haddock, my wife had a burger and the children had pizza and bolognese respectively. The haddock was out of this world and the best I've tasted, and I've eaten in Rick Steins in Cornwall. The burger was homemade and it too was excellent. The kids ate all their meals too. The ale was well kept, and we were allowed tasters to see which we preferred. The second day, the full menu was available and we both had the burger this time, which again was excellent. One child had an adult lasagna and ate the lot, complementing all through.

Greeted by blazing open fires, this is a gem to return to.A superb choice for our Valentine meal. The "Salmon Goujons" starter was lovely. Main course "Fillet d'amour" was cooked to absolute perfection. My rare really was "rare" ! Perhaps not to everyone's liking, but the quality of the steak meant it was truly delicious. The other was medium as requested - Kat raved as to how tasty and succulent it was - top notch - with a mushroom and brandy sauce to match. Good selection of vegetables, and the chips . . . deep golden brown, full of flavour, good old-fashioned home-cooked style.Live duo, "The River Cards", accompanied a perfect evening. Not only good to listen to whilst dining, but well worth singing along to, if you wanted.Attentive service throughout from the team, including a rose at the end of the evening to finish things off. Can't wait to go back when we next get the chance.Let's be clear, this is about the Red Lion, Cheddleton, just up from the Flint Mill - not to be confused with the Red Lion in the centre of Leek (we've not been there).have not found a web site, but they are on Facebook: Look for "The Red Lion, Cheddleton".
