Thornbury Hall Rasoi in Staffordshire Moorlands

I had forgotten about Thornbury Hall but very glad to rediscover it. Excellent food with some menu items that weren't just the run of the mill Indian restaurant standards. Very good service and a warm welcome. We will return soon!

It was our 1st time visit & shall definately be visiting again! The meats in the sauces just melted in your mouth & wasn’t too spicy for those who are apprehensive on Indian food! Everything was perfect, we went on a Sunday evening so it was very quiet, one of our party had English menu and enjoyed it very much.

We have been going here for 30 years and it is always excellent...Staff, food and service first class..Eight of us went last night and everyone enjoyed it .New menu which is even better and great atmosphere.

We had our wedding here, and I have to say, the day exceeded my expectations considerably. Anisa was a delight and helped manage the day. Everyone was raving about the food, but the one thing that made it for us was having the ceremony outside. We were lucky that the sun was out, allowing Anisa and her staff to move everything outside. All our guests enjoyed themselves and mainly, my wife was happy.

Given the one star for the lovely waiter behind the bar, lovely man , told when we went in it was fully booked but if we don't mind been on our own they would give us a table, thought how nice but how wrong it was ,we had a table on a wind tunnel it was freezing, never warmed up till we got in the car on the way home , in a week in the area having a Indian each night for dinner this came bottom of our list , not going to go on about how disappointed we were about the meal,

Beautiful building and surrounding area, excellent bar, menu with lot's of choice. Food was amazing would highly recommend. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Our family party of 13 for my son's 18th birthday celebration were made very welcome and was very helpful to pre-order our meals.

Came as a party of 17 to celebrate a milestone birthday. From the very start the staff just couldn’t do enough for us. Attentive, friendly, efficient & welcoming. Every single member of staff we encountered at our table deserves a special thanks. You made our evening so special even to the point of adding candles to our birthday cake (which I’d forgotten) to taking all our family group photos. The food was exceptional with excellent presentation. Lovely hot towels at the end of the meal. Huge options if you choose from the A-La-Carte menu so I recommend this. Will definitely be returning. Enjoyable meal, great value. Our first visit for years but we will definitely be back soon. Another enjoyable meal and value for money. Empty when we arrived but full within.an hour. The Star Room is a little dark. Good service.

Disappointing service and food June 2024 I recall eating here 20 years ago and it was superb. Last night's experience did not live up to that memory. We arrived on time for a 7pm booking and received our food at 8.45pm, having only had papadums in the interim (we did not order starters). We were not told that there was a delay, or why and noticed at one point, there was not a single table eating food out of 9-10 tables. The staff were not attentive, so it was hard to obtain a waiter to take a repeat drinks order. We had to suppress a laugh when a waiter asked us after 1h 35mins whether we were ready for our main course. The menu has a standard Pakistani Indian range and only one person was taking orders. When it arrived, the food was average, not overly flavoursome and rather oily. We were brought some onion bhajis after 1 hour 25 mins, presumably as compensation for the long wait. After the meal, we asked why there was such a long delay, we were told it was because we were a table of vegetarians, and more vegetables needed preparing. We appreciated the restaurant deducting 20% from our final bill. I know this reads in marked distinction to other reviews, but we will not be returning.

Absolutely amazing, food was excellent as we're the staff. Highly recommend. Very reasonably priced for top notch food.

It is a stunning building and the food is delicious, it is seriously one of my families top three places to eat. We have gone to two birthday meals there so far this year and love it more each time. The menu is huge so we can eat different things each time. The catering staff are lovely and we even got to meet the chef at the end of our meal. The extra bits add to the experiences such as a warm towel and mints. The prices aren't bad either especially for the food quality and they have varied spiciness so suits everyone's tastes. They also give you free poppadom's (homemade) to start your meal. 10/10 would recommend.

Firstly I don't often leave a review. However first time here for food and deserves a review. The food is absolutely outstanding and on point. Taste, presentation and authentic food... absolutely amazing. And that is what we came for. Slightly negative, staff not etiquette to the standard of food, wine list ??? And having to ask for simple things. Shame as this could be something worth travelling for food wise. This is an absolute compliment for the food.

Blah .. lovely place though .. quite a blustery evening outside .. was rather chilly inside .. salmon wasn't as expected very small & very bland (can't you just infuse the salmon rather than dollop curry sauce on top and serve with Bombay Potato instead rather than charging extra for the extra bland rice portion ?? .. wouldn't really recommend the run out (sorry) 🤷‍♀️🫣

Great food, great price . The staff are lovely and owner came out to say Hi. Lamb dish was exceptional and just right amount of heat. We remember coming here over 20 years ago and it did not disappoint. The only problem was the very poor lightning, customers were using their phone torches to read the menu. Maybe a few standard lights could address this. Could not fault the food it was beautiful and the cost was very reasonable. Will return, if the lightning could be better.

Valentine's evening... Romantic setting , beautiful food, , who could ask for more. They were busy but the staff were lovely. Recommend going here for a special occasion

Felt quiet for a Saturday night and was quite dark to eat in (even though we loved the stars on the ceiling). Service was quick and very friendly and food was absolutely delicious.

We have been coming here for over 29yrs for family birthday treats. Did not dusapoint tonight for my sons 27th birthday..amazing food fabulous service with a special birthday treat at the end. Absolutely delightful South Asian restaurant located in a stunning setting. Family run and expert knowledge of their cuisine. My wife ordered a Jalfrezi and was presented with a sample of the sauce before the mains came as a pre-emptive warning it may be quite different to what she's used to. The staff were right to point it out and she promptly changed her order. The food was delicious. Kids were very happy with their child friendly tikka masala. The peshwari naan was out of this world. Will definitely visit again if we're in the area - a must visit after Alton Towers!

Passing through and decided to try Thornbury Hall Rasoi. Really a great place to eat from service, music to food. Really truly tasty food as I am a foodie. Don't hesitate to try this Restaurant. Even Personal touch from the owner who came over to see how everything was going. 5 Star.

Wow!!! The food is absolutely incredible, and has such good portion sizes too. I can say for certain I'm extremely full and have leftovers to bring home too! The venue is delightful, slightly out of the way of the main city, but 100% worth the visit. The staff are so lovely, and for someone that doesn't know an awful lot about Indian cuisine, I was helped to find the perfect dish for me - which was a Bhuna, and was gorgeous!! I also had the starter of onion bhajis, which was massive and so incredibly tasty. My dad had the Lamb Biryani which was equally delightful! If you've got the time, I recommend taking a visit here for delicious Indian food!

We booked a table as staying nearby at the Alton towers hotel. Amazing food and service. The food was full of flavour, could not fault the food or service. Amazing and very reasonably priced aswell.

I came here with my girlfriend, and she said the lamb biryani was the best one she ever had. As for me, I'm still thinking about the gulab jamun I had for dessert.

Really delicious food, which caters to all spice levels. Excellent service and lovely atmosphere. There was a wide variety of options on the menu and it was reasonably priced. We all tried different dishes and found them all extremely tasty and as described. The decor is beautiful and the staff were very attentive and friendly.

We went there last night with our three kids 13,11 and 7. We all loved the food. Staff very friendly. Been a few times and will def go back.

Just a great place for a curry if your in the area try it out

We visited after a day at Alton towers for an early evening meal with our 2 daughters who are 10 and 4. Unfortunately not long after ordering the food our youngest was sick (alot) which is obviously not ideal in any restaurant and my initial thought was not in a fancy restaurant. Much to our surprise the staff where wonderful and so understanding and extremely helpful. The owner (I believe) especially went out of her way, to help and make sure we were all OK. She even kindly got clothes for our daughter to change into and a towel. Really was so wonderful to be treating in this way and says alot for the restaurant and service they offer. We still managed to enjoy the food but as a takeaway. It was fresh and delicious I had the lamb chops and the serving was very generous! The cheese naan was one of the best we have had! Really would recommend you give this place a try if you appreciate a decent quality meal. If you're not a fan of overly spicy/hot food just speak to your server, they will cater to your needs. Not over priced. Lovely surroundings. This is not just a high street curry house.

Delicious food, some of the best naan breads we've ever tasted. The menu has got some really interesting choices on it, not just your 'standard' curry menu. Staff were polite and attentive and the chef even came out to have a chat 👍

Went there for what we thought would be a lovely evening meal. I ordered a Lamb rogan josh which when it came looked like a bowl of black stuff. The lamb was nice and tender but the sauce had no flavour whatsoever, like a thick black gravy with a dry texture and a piece of tomato in it. I could not eat it at all as absolute awful. Nothing like a rogan josh. My husband had a tikka masala and again this was absolutely tasteless. Pilau rice awful also. Portion sizes very small which was fine by us and we couldn’t eat it anyway, can’t understand the good reviews as 2 completely different dishes were both horrendous. Worst Food I have ever eaten. We went there thinking this would be a lovely evening for us due to the reviews on trip advisor but came home feeling ripped off and extremely disappointed. Never again!

From the time you walk through the door, the staff make you feel welcome. The food is out of this world and the portions are amazing. Everything we had was mouth watering. We chose the Valentines Day meal which had a great selection and we added a couple items to the order and that was no trouble. The atmosphere is chilled and relaxed, with a feel of grandeur. This is an amazing place and we recommend you come visit. 10 out of 10

I don’t know what I was expecting. My friend had recommended the place as she’s obsessed with the ceiling - she always told me that she loved eating here because it was so beautiful. We arrived first and were seated in the first area as you walk in - close to the bar. I took a look around and couldn’t work out what my friend had been talking about. It turned out, when my friend arrived, that we’d not been seated in the best place and there was a whole other room (which she showed me when we went to the loo). The food was lovely - not the usual choices you’d expect in an Indian, and I liked that because it forced me to try new things. Everything we had was delicious. The staff were super friendly - especially with my young son. My only complaint would be that we were very very cold in our seating position. Had the staff not taken our coats on arrival - we would have put them back on.

Just been for a meal 4 of us hadn't been for a while still as good as ever we all had a wonderful meal the staff are very welcoming and hard working the food was excellent 2 butter chickens 1 rogan josh and 1 tandoori mixed grill so big it didn't get finished you have to have a good appetite to finish it all in all a very nice night

After visiting Thornberry Hall for over 20 years it was an easy decision arrange a specialist birthday party at my favourite restaurant. With a mixed group the team catered for all our requirements from; Easy access for my elderly family, to an extensive selection of high quality vegetarian dishes to an affordable tasty menu. All staff were extremely attentive and ensured my special event was a the best experience possible. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and we continue to visit without doubt.

A lovely New Years Eve at Thornbury Hall. The food was amazing and the staff very attentive.

The only real problem here is that the Jalfrazi (very different to the usual variety as it's based around green chillies) has now ruined all other jalfrezis for me! Absolutely amazing food in general and a great atmosphere - apart from a couple of screaming infants, though clearly that wasn't the restaurants fault. It's a LOT better than your average curry house and is situated in the countryside so has some impressive gardens too. Well worth the drive to get there. Cannot recommend enough.

Dined as part of a large family group with pre-ordered meals. The venue, atmosphere and food was fantastic. However the delivery of the meals became chaotic and some people's meals were delayed to the point where most had already eaten. Large groups must be difficult to get right every time, staff are only human but it's my only critique. I'll be visiting again but perhaps as a couple.

Booked for the staff Christmas party - it was fabulous. Beautiful location and surroundings, attentive and friendly staff and the food was amazing. Everyone commented on the quality and variety available for a Christmas set meal. Fantastic value- the jumbo prawn main was delicious 😋....

Such a disappointing meal, the setting is perfect. Second time here and it hasn't lived up to expectations yet. We came a number of years ago for our anniversary and found the food to be over spiced, and too hot to enjoy. This time it wasn't over spiced but rather bland and poor in comparison to other Indian restaurants we've been. As mentioned, the actual place looks really nice and sets it all up for an enjoyable evening. The service is pleasant and attentive without being outstanding. The selection of drinks isn't as good as other restaurants, and on this latest particular visit. The cobra beer went off during the meal and tasted horrible and flat. The food was just OK, the sundries were served on cold plates meaning any heat in them was soon lost. The main dishes had little spice and tasted quite bland. My lamb rogan josh had nice meat in it but the sauce was a little watery and nothing special My wife had tikka masala which had more spice but again was quite bland. Overall I'm not likely to return to this restaurant, as we have not enjoyed the food on both occasions we've been. I wouldn't recommend this place to any of my friends or family, which disappoints me as I do like a tasty curry.

1st time here after hearing a lot of positive reviews, and they were all correct. Beautiful venue, the staff are very welcoming and family orientated. The star of the show is undoubtedly the food. The prawn starter is sensational along with the house specials. Will 100% be returning

Went here with a large-ish group of people (there were 9 of us) so we had to pre-order, which is fine, but my husband and I are vegan it was really unclear from the menu which curries were vegetarian and vegan. We plumped for the onion bhajis and vegan burger in the end which were the best options from a tiny selection of menu items which were clearly labelled as vegan. Massively disappointed with the food. My group aren't particularly foodie types and we're not too fussy but this was honestly one of the worst meals I've ever eaten at a restaurant. My onion bhaji arrived only slightly warm and was the blandest thing ever. Onion bhajis from Asda have more flavour! The vegan burger was the worst burger I've ever eaten. Like my starter, it arrived only slightly warm and yet was a little burnt. And again, it just had no flavour. It was served in a cheap bun with limp salad and chips that quickly went cold. Chatting with the others in my group they mentioned that their food was bland and that curries tasted watery. The atmosphere in the restaurant was a little weird. It didn't feel authentically Indian/South Asian. The whole experience felt like an Indian meal watered down to accommodate and appeal to the bland taste of elderly British people. The one star is for the servers who were friendly and relatively attentive. I definitely won't be eating here again and definitely don't recommend it. And I'm stunned by the huge numbers of great reviews this place has received. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I have visited Thornbury Hall numerous times in the past, mainly for large family parties and it has never failed to deliver a great evening. I went back here after many years and it is just as good now as it has always been, the decor is lovely, the staff are so welcoming and the food is simply brilliant. I would recommend the Larohi Charga and the jalfrezi but be warned it isn't for the faint hearted, I would totally recommend this place to everyone and I'm sure I'll be back there soon.

Absolutely perfect place. Upon arrival it was breath taking. The area and grounds are beautiful. Greeting by staff was very welcoming. Service was 100% . Advice on food was excellent. And as for the food all I can say is go and taste and you will not be disappointed. Completely lovely experience for my daughters 21st birthday.

Brilliant Manu, good selection, vegetarian , Meat lovers, and ofcourse Vegan. All meat dishes are Halel. I would say must visit if you are in the area.

We had my brother laws 40th birthday here and the service and food was amazing. The owner went out of his way to help us as the was 30 guests.
