The food was nice. My compliments go to most of the staff, who are friendly and busy. However, I was disappointed with one young man called Max. He acted overconfident and smarmy when he brought our food and I overheard him swearing as he went into the kitchen as I was going to the toilet.

We visited the cafe at Strikes garden centre in Stokesley yesterday and it was an absolute disappointment from start to finish, I had never visited before and will likely never visit again. We ordered our food in a huge queue to which the server informed us we would have to pick a table to be able to order food. All tables that were unoccupied as far as we could see, were full of rubbish but the server said we could put a reserved sign on the table and the floor staff would clean the table asap. We had to choose a booth as I had hurt my back and needed the height of the booth for my back to sit against. My partner went to sit at the table and hopefully catch the eye of the one and only member of floor staff who was run off her feet so the table could be cleared. The food arrived and the member of staff who delivered it very sarcastically remarked to my partner that we must have been desperate to sit at a table full of rubbish and promptly walked off with no attempt to even clean the table for us baring in mind the only member of floor staff was still fighting a losing battle with the cleaning of the tables. My partner was taken aback by this but was I even more frustrated when I was still stood at the till waiting to pay despite our order arriving at the table to overhear the server walking in to the kitchen saying very loudly ‘have you seen her sitting at that table full of rubbish I wouldn’t dare do that’ despite the fact he had made zero attempt to offer his service to clean the table himself. To top off our visit, we initially ordered chicken and bacon linguine to be told after our order had been placed that there was no chicken so we could have bacon linguine which was fine but there would be no discount and also when my fish and chips arrived, there was no tartare sauce or batter bits which was described on the menu. Considering it is not cheap to eat there, the service and response from your kitchen staff was appalling and I felt hugely sorry for the only member of floor staff as no one was even attempting to help her clear the backlog of rubbish from the tables.

Confusing system with app vs counter ordering. Seems to have gone back to queuing at the counter for food, which then has to be made and brought to the table. Drinks and cakes, which can be taken away from the counter, can be ordered via the app. Makes no sense. Lunch was poor quality and very basic for the cost. Drinks took ages to come. Table hadn't been cleaned. Lots of staff standing around. Second round of coffees took 40 minutes and a reminder to come, no apology, and this was midafternoon when there were few people in. Picked up a plant on the way out and spent a further 20 minutes in a queue to pay! Wouldn't go back.

Sad to see none of the food at the counter covered up. When I was waiting to order, a woman in front of me changed her mind about a scone and put it back. I joined the queue to buy coffee and cake with some friends, but when we saw the cakes and scones uncovered with people coughing over them and customers allowed to pick their own, which could contaminate the others, we left and went to a cafe in Stokesley, which was much better - they covered their cakes and only staff were allowed to pick them using tongs. I wouldn't go to Strikes again.

Came here with my mother, thinking it would be simple snack food like a bowl of chips - oh how wrong I was! I am well chuffed about it too! Gammon and steak with pineapple salsa; Vegetable and chilli linguine (vegan); Fruit trifle; and Rich dark chocolate cake (vegan). Seriously, no joke, the food is amazing. Design is posh and sleek, and tastes like a 4 star restaurant. The windows to the outside of the garden centre brings in lush light and creates a lovely ambiance for a sit down meal. Very happy customers. We’ll be going back as well, there’s still more to try on the menu, including additional vegan meals & deserts! Very great place for anyone with dairy, gluten or other allergies when it comes to high quality food & choice! We ate our deserts faster than I could take photos, so please enjoy shots of the main meals instead haha!

Was shown to our table by a friendly waiting assistant who then went on to clearly explain the ordering procedure & offer any assistance if required. Tables were well-spaced out with a side table to enable social distancing & the safe delivery of food ordered. The reduced menu still offered a good variety of snacks, main meals, desserts & drinks (less choices because of a reduced kitchen staff team being able to work). The well-presented food was brought to us without having long to wait & was very enjoyable. The very pleasant & hard-working waiting staff regularly checked if all was satisfactory/if anything was needed. A very pleasant occasion was had in a very safe environment during these difficult times (Covid pandemic). Having read some of the negative comments by others, I can't help but wonder if we all have been writing about the same place because I couldn't find fault. Highly recommended! We popped in here on spec while driving past and were very impressed with this new garden centre. It is ultra modern; very large; and has an extensive range of gardening and non-gardening goods for sale.Having been in many garden centre cafes over the years, we expected the one here to be pretty much the same as all the rest, and were taken completely by surprise when we saw it. This is a very large and smart restaurant that is clearly very popular, as it was very busy when we were there. The sheer size of the place meant however that there was still plenty of room. (It is three times the size of the original coffee shop)We only had hot drinks, which were good and very reasonably priced.

Considering the original site was totally devastated by fire a little over 18 months ago an amazing amount of effort has taken place to have this popular restaurant up and running again, still a work in progress but on the right track.Replacing the temporary restaurant, which was constructed shortly after the fire, the new building has a more welcoming and comfortable feel to it, and given a little more time will no doubt be as popular as ever.We have visited twice over the festive season and not been disappointed, there appears to be seating for approx.300 people and although it was very busy the staff were efficient, friendly and coping extremely well. Still some outstanding work to complete on the outside seating area and market garden layout however by summer I would think it will considered as one of the best market gardens / restaurants in the area, not a la carte, but what the majority of people want at a reasonable price.I think everyone associated with the redevelopment of the site deserves a pat on the back, however you will never please everyone, just keep up the good work.

This is our first visit in quite a while as it burnt down, now it’s reopened in a brand new building we thought we would go back and try it out. First of all, it’s very expensive for a cafe, everything seems to be between £7 and £10 for mains, deserts around £5-£6, with drinks on top for a family you would be looking at £50, that’s just to expensive for a garden centre cafe.Staff seemed to be quite spiky, table number has to be given at till, which is not good if your on your own or with children. Price was so expensive, my wife just got a drink, me and my son got chips and a sandwich, chips are a joke, they are lovely but they come in this ridiculous basket (mini frying pan basket) t must have had no more than 8 chips in it and at £4 I think they are having a joke at our expense. Brunch was fabulous; would highly recommend this and we are looking forward to visiting again soon. It’s great to see the garden centre on its way to re-opening fully following the fire. If you visit during the festive period, make sure you see the singing reindeer/donkey in the outside area - what a fantastic installation. Should be a charity box there - it would raise a fortune! The restaurant is well worth a visit at any time and it’s increased size means that it can be a multi purpose area.

There are daily specials (until 3.00 pm) and a range of eats from hot food to salads, snacks and tempting cakes. We particularly like the meat pies, served with chips, veg and gravy, as the pastry is good with deep meat filling (turkey/chicken/mince/minted lamb etc) and the quiches with salad, rice, and chips if wished, and find the portions are filling. There are vegetarian options and the children's menu is varied. Traditional Afternoon Teas are available also special food nights and Sunday lunches.

What a shame we can't bring back the old Strikes Café, where we used to get delicious home cooked meals. I visited with a friend this week and ordered from the specials, which I must say are grossly overpriced at nearly £9. Was served up two enormous lumps of undercooked, tough and inedible beef with a bit of mash underneath and not a vegetable in sight. Was informed that it did not come with veg. The waitress did her best and was polite and helpful and changed it for something else, but even then the 'salad' only consisted of a few leaves and paper thin slices of cucumber nothing else. Needless to say we will not be eating in this café ever again. The other two garden centre cafes in the area have far superior food and at better prices too.

The service was very poor, when ordering we were rushed and I was still speaking to the lady when she moved on the next customer, very rude. We arrived after the lunch time rush, 2.30 pm. There were a lot of tables that needed clearing. We ordered the afternoon tea and we were both disappointed with the choice and quality, nothing exceptional. We feel the service and quality is going down, such a shame as this was always a nice place to catch up with friends and look around the garden centre.

On 19th March 2017 my wife and l attended Strikes Stokesley. We have been attending for years and enjoyed a look around followed by coffee in the Topiary coffee shop. As with all other coffee shops they had a loyalty card system which when we attended last had been discontinued with a general store card intending to replace it. As normal we attended the topiary coffee shop and purchased coffee and scones, l was then advised to obtain my loyalty store card on exiting the store at the till. We noticed our coffee cups were only half full of coffee the other half being just froth. My wife then cut into her scone (different type to mine) only to find it very dry. She returned the scone to the till and pointed out how dry it was and asked to exchange it. A passing supervisor walking past snatched it from my wife's hand , no eye or speech contact and walked in the kitchen area. My wife said to the staff at the till' suppose that means Yes. My wife exchanged the scone for a different type and returned to the table. Within a couple of minutes the staff member who was at the till came to the table, shocked and apologised for the rudeness of her supervisor. My wife pointed out her supervisor was not a very good role model with that attitude. Shortly after the supervisor attended our table with another scone which my wife declined as she had already exchanged hers. No apology was given to my wife by this supervisor nor was there any eye contact as she said the wrong scones had been put out and walked off. To add insult to injury we attended the cash desk with our purchases and when l asked for the new store loyalty card was advised it cost £12.00 a year, l declined and will in future attend any of the other garden centres in the area who have polite staff and a free loyalty card system. I did email a complaint to the store to give them the opportunity to respond but have todate (27.3.17) failed to receive any acknowledgement at all. After many years of visiting the store it was our last. Poor customer service in fact none at all. Try other garden centres in the area they're all good avoid this one.

My family and I started having breakfast and lunch here and we have constantly been impressed with the lovely staff, the quality of food and high standards. Sadly, it's dropped slightly recently. I am nervous it will turn into the place we used to go to, which isn't good. A recent visit is a good example. I went for lunch with a friend. I ordered a cheese and ham omelette, which was around £8 and my friend ordered Gammon, Egg and Chips which was about £7. Drinks were in addition to these prices. When the food arrived, my friend literally got 1 small slice of ham/gammon, 1 fried egg and a small basket of chips. Her first impressions were not very good at all. My omelette definitely had little cheese in it. It was completely overfilled with spring onion, to the point where it was overpowered with onion. In all honesty, not very nice at all. The staff are lovely and for that reason, we will always come from time to time for coffee's and tea's and maybe a scone or something. But I think we will be leaving the hot meals for now, until standards can go back to how it used to be. The drinks were nice and it's lovely chatting with the servers. I am confident it can be put right again, the right staff and management are there, I think everyone just needs to take a breath and a step backwards and see where things can be improved back to how it used to be

I took a group of gardening friends there for afternoon tea with vouchers and having been the previous year and had an excellent time we were very disappointed with everything. What has changed in the kitchen to make this happen. The sandwiches were squashed and had probably been in the fridge (two small squares). Thankfully we only paid half price and it wasn't even worth that.

Our first visit since a major refurb. A massive improvement. We both had the festive omelette which came with some salad, sweet potato and a tasty coleslaw. My wife had a chai latte and I a double espresso both of which were good. The only negative was the price which was a bit on the high side, which often seems to be the case with cafes in garden centres.

We stopped here for coffee and cake one day whilst looking at the Christmas department. The first thing that struck us was the price as it all seemed a little over priced with jacket potatoes £7+, most of the cakes were nearly £3. We had a coffee, hot chocolate and cherry scone and it came to over £7. The scone although it looked homemade was quite tasteless. The other thing that was really poor was the service with only one person on the counter that had to take orders, make drinks and take the money all herself, whilst there were other people wandering around that didn't seem to doing a lot (including a lady that looked like the manager) she didn't seem particularly concerned even when a queue built up!Overall not a great experience and with so many other garden centres with tea rooms close by I don't think we will be returning to buy our Christmas things.

We visited for lunch last Saturday and since eating here last time (not outstanding), the Topiary restaurant has been completely refurbished and is a lovely place to eat. We had the soup and sandwich combo with chips and drinks, but the daily specials also looked tasty and the cakes amazing. Service was excellent. We have booked for their special Christmas menu in the week leading up to Christmas. Value was great and seating comfortable. The only very minor gripe I would have is that the cakes etc are exposed to coughing customers and children's fingers - I am a bit fussy about that type of thing, but otherwise, the Topiary comes highly recommended.

Usually very poor customer service- sometimes no one seems to know what they are doing. When I last ordered a chicken caesar sandwich I was given a cheap bun with 2 slices of chicken and some limp rocket with a small pool of dressing on the fake slate plate. My partners sandwich had a thick layer of cheap margarine. I find the prices very expensive. We've had enough and won't be returning unfortunately

Went to Strikes for a coffee and scone today. The scone was the worst I have ever tasted. It looked good, but it was dry and heavy. It would be interesting to know if it was a 'home made' one Some lazy restaurants use a large packet of scone mix. They put fruit in it the mixture for the 'fruit scone' and cheese for the 'cheese scone. Hence really tasteless scones purporting to be 'home made!

First time I've been since refit & it looks nice. I have to say, for what you get, it is very poor value and not of the best quality. £6+ for essentially a sausage (1), bacon (1 slice) and mushroom bun. Tasty bread, but cheap sausage and so, way overpriced. Please note: the children's meals, although looking very trendy, are served on a flat wooden board - totally impractical, resulting in a 2 and 4 year olds food going everywhere. Sorry, but some jaunty plastic plates would be better, although not look as trendy.......

My wife and I popped into Strikes Garden Centre to get some lawn fertiliser and decided to have a quick lunch in the new restaurant. The restaurant is large, modern and airy. The staff were friendly and polite. We ordered ham & pea soup, tuna sandwiches, egg sandwiches, the special hot chocolate and a black coffee. We took our drinks and sat at a very nice window table and within a few minutes our food arrived. The waitress was very polite. The drinks were very good, however, the soup was salty for our taste, so my wife left most of her's and the sandwiches were rather plain. The meal felt somewhat over priced at £18.When we finished the waitress efficiently cleared away our dishes in a timely fashion. The restaurant seemed very popular and filled up whilst we ate our lunch. The restaurant is very pleasant but next time we will avoid lunch time & probably stick to a coffee and cake treat. The cake selection looked very good and the portions substantial.

Called into topiary for a quick lunch 17/5/16 with my wife, mother in law and sister in law. We had been here in December and it was superb but this experience left a lot to be desired. I had a chicken Caesar sandwich which was very tasty but very poor value for money. It was over £6 for a fancy bread bun 4 small pieces of chicken a bit of sauce with a tomato and some salad leaves. My sister in law had a slice of quiche, some cous cous some coleslaw and the customary tomato and salad leaves and that was over £7. My wife and her mum had carrot and sweet potato soup which they said was very good and reasonably priced. I don't mind paying for good but I don't like being ripped off and after that meal I felt that way. I won't be going back we'll go to arcadia or cherry Hill in the future.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Firstly it's great to see the restaurant's long-overdue makeover, and the food seems to have improved as well, but it's way over-priced. £24 for two bowls of soup, two sandwiches, a cup of tea and glass of fruit juice; crazy. The siting of the menu boards need re-thinking. By the time you've got to the front of the queue you can't remember everything you wanted, or how it was described, and the menu board is way back behind you at the restaurant entrance and not repeated, so you have no prompt. The girl who served us was quite frankly in the wrong job; disengaged, brusque, hard to understand and plus, I was the wrong gender to be worth flirting with. The guy ahead of me got the full eyelash fluttering treatment but I didn't even warrant a smile. And please someone tell her that chewing gum when you're serving food, is very far from appealing. She repeatedly asked the same questions of my very simple order (i.e. whether I wanted brown or white bread seemed to throw her) and was unable to absorb the information. I shouldn't have been surprised when the wrong order turned up and large chunks of hard bacon and handfuls of cress with long, hard stalks lavishly added to what should have been a plain egg mayonnaise sandwich. On the plus side the order arrived quickly, and a replacement for the mistake was also quickly with us. The soup was tasty and the sandwiches acceptable. Whilst waiting at the till, a number of customers brought orders back with problems, so something's going wrong. But the new decor is good, the layout sensible, and thank goodness they've changed the roof so you don't feel as though you're sitting in one of their own greenhouses. It has the potential to be great, but they really need to get a grip, read these Trip Advisor reviews, and address the problems. And they need to look at their pricing. Many customers are in the retired and more senior bracket, and for what you get, their prices are too high.

Far too expensive and needs to be changed. However, the food was delicious- especially the batten-burg cake!! Went in already had booked a table took 30 mins to get sat down. No table service. Took 1.30hours for food once ordered. Food on floor table not cleaned. Once people had left they did not clear up ( there was not many people in there either). Had ran out of most food on the menu. We told them we had a broccoli allergy so when they did not have most of the veg we requested. They piled the plate with broccoli. As soon as we walked in it smelled of fish. Once the food had come we had hard meat undercooked chips and the nana said “it was the worst meal of her life” (she is eighty and bearing in mines she was in an orphanage where they did not give good food back then).

My husband and I booked in with friends for Sunday lunch today and quite frankly the service and the food was appalling. The young lad who took our order was surly and unfriendly. We waited nearly an hour for our food which was over cooked and horrible when it arrived. The meat and roast potatoes ( which were so overcooked they were dried out and crispy) were served with no veg or gravy. We eventually had to go to the bar and ask for the veg which came in a small square pot which wouldn’t have been enough for one person never mind the three of us who had ordered the roast dinner. The veg was also over cooked and tasteless. Meanwhile the rest of the meal had gone cold. Even the dessert I had of a chocolate sundae was off. Never again…
