Halls Fish Shop in Hambleton

I have never had a chippy tea like this! Hoping for fresh food as we got there early, the food we were served was like it had been held in the hot cupboard for 3 days! Using cheap products with no taste doesnt end well! Threw the fish in the bin on the first bite, batter was soggy, tasted awful! Curry sauce had the consistency and taste of water...also went straight in the bin! Chips...limp and greasy. No atmosphere, more interested in watching the t.v , no talk between the team of staff. If you don't want to do a good job and have great reviews then I ask....why are you doing it? There is simply no pride in your work! What a waste of money and time! Never ever buying from you again or recommending you to anyone!

Visiting so decided for Fish and Chips, should have got worried when we ordered a pie, which was brought out from the back and stuck in the microwave to warm up... Chips were limp and greasy as was the fish, batter was not crispy at all, just dripping in oil. Worst chippy tea I've had in a long time.

Fabulously fresh haddock cooked to order. Chips lovely and crisp on outside and soft and fluffy on inside. Mushy peas nice and tasty. No problem with service. Pleasant and friendly .

Worst fish and chips we ever had ..the sausage stunk and the chips was mega grease ...kids portions for 5 pound was not very good there burgers looked rubbery ...never had to leave a place before and leave the food .the lady didn't speak ..our rating is a 0 😱 waste off 32 pound

Absolutely dreadful, Ordered food with no one waiting told to wait 15 mins, when food was finally ready 2 x battered sausages 1 x fishcake 2 x battered haddock 1 x large chips, I noticed the large chips were tiny so had to order a small portion as well, all items were individually wrapped and placed on counter, so had to ask for a bag as it was clear to see I couldn't carry it all loose! Charged 10p and just shoved a bag at me without putting the items in, so I had to do it, the girl had absolutely no people skills at all, when we got to where we were staying and dished up the food the battered sausages had hardly any batter the fishcake was rock-hard, and the battered haddock and chips were all soggy the fish had no flavour, this was the worst fish and chips I've ever had and paid £26 for the privilege!!!

Went Friday lunchtime, café empty which lowered expectations but remained open-minded. Fish and chips tasted better than they looked but nothing remarkable. The mushy peas looked grey and weren't nice at all. The lady serving may as well have been mute - I asked if I needed to order sauces or whether they were at the table and she just didn't respond. Food served quickly but we did have to wait a while as no one was there to take our order. Wouldn't go back.

I’d give the cod 5 out of 5, crispy, golden batter and white flaky fish, cooked perfectly. Chips were a little pale for me. Lady let me pick the fish I wanted as I like mine extra crispy!

Worst fish and chips we have ever had today. Batter and chips were very poor. Fish had been frozen and seen better days. Young girl who served needs to go to charm school.

A group of 13 of us visited for Chippy Tea while camping as a break from cooking. All the food was freshly prepared and so nice sat round our Fire Pit back at The Campsite. Thank you!

Had fish and chips from Hall’s for the first time in many years. Back then, they were second to none. No longer, sadly, Feeble meagre fish in soggy, tasteless batter. Chips OK and a good size portion. Overall, very disappointing. Time to try the fish shop at the other end of the Market Place.

Went here previously and purchased chips on their own. Had one of them and it was cold so had to throw out. Thought this was a one off as late in day so gave benefit of doubt. This visit ordered three fish and large chips. Chips were again cold and fish was like ‘half a fish’ on all three pieces. Aside from this the service was beyond miserable. I am lost for any more words….what can you say?

Fish was good but the batter surrounding it let it down - very soggy. Chips also soggy. So unfortunately can’t recommend. They need to raise their game as there are so many superior versions around. Service was unenthusiastic which makes me think their heart really isn’t in it.

My wife and I had lunch here around 12.30 in the afternoon and had some lovely fish and chips. The chips were cooked just right in clean fat and they were really nice and clean, the fish was flaky and white and the batter not too thick but nice and crunchy. The fish has skin on so if you don’t like that ask if you can have skin removed before cooking, skin on is the exception these days not the rule, it didn’t bother us we like skin on, it was all you got when we were young. The restaurant itself is rustic but very clean, no table cloths here. It’s dog friendly and they are warmly greeted. Order at the restaurant service counter but everything else is done for you, tea is in mugs and only cost a pound but there’s absolutely nothing to dislike about it. The waitress was friendly and chatted to us without being intrusive. We’ll be back on future visits to the area.

This was our first visit to Halls. It wasn't service with a smile but we never know someone else's story. We were a bit worried when no-one else came in the restaurant while we ate. Then I spotted the continuous queue outside the back for takeaways. We thought the fish and chips were one of the nicest we've had. Will definitely go there again when we're up that way.

Not great honestly. Quite soggy and greasy and not very tasty. I'd say you're better off going further afeild. Definitely let's Bedale down as it's a pity considering the standard of most of the other restaurants and takeaways in the area.

Takeaway - fish and chips were very greasy. Mushy peas awful...tasted sweet. Staff not that friendly and still operating covid restrictions with one person allowed in at a time. Wouldn't get fish and chips from here again.

Would you like to eat these for your tea??? No fish in the soggy batter!! Chips also soggy!!! Don't know why we keep giving them another chance. Second picture is what my husband left. £14 in the bin!!! Mine went in the bin straight away!!!

After being unable to get a meal on Saturday it appears all pubs stop serving food after 4pm we decided upon fish and chips. We saw a queue and thought it could be a good chippy. One fish and chips fish not very fresh, sausage and chips the sausage burnt, fish cake and chips fish cake burnt both sausage and fish cake thrown away. One scampi and chips the scampi cooked fresh and not left in a warmer these were fine. To say disappointed was an understatement won't visit again.

Worst Fish n Chips I've ever had. Got there about 5ish and would have expected to have had some fresh cooked fish. Nope, was in and out in 5 minutes, everything was pre cooker and soggy. Got back home and the fish collapsed into a greasy mess. Stone cold and horrible. Chips were ok but again, cold. If this is the standard of chippy in Bedale, then I feel sorry for the residents

As in the previous review we were looking forward to this! However quite disappointed. Both fish and chips were very oily and had an odd taste. Staff a bit miserable! Tasted better.

After the good reviews we were looking forward to this- visited 6.45pm approx 14th July. Sad to say the curry sauce was obviously watered down ( it tasted watery and was very thin) and the fish and chips were really greasy and soggy.

The most disgusting fish and chips I've had since the last time here over a year ago!! Soggy batter grey fish and cold chips. My stomach has been up set all day. Total expensive rubbish!!

Not impressed, maybe we were late in the day (1805), but the fish and chips had been sitting in the warmer for a while I think. Unlike our Pickering chippy that only cooks to order , yes you wait for 10 mins, but worth it

Drawn in by the smell wafting down the road. My tastebuds weren’t as satisfied as my nostrils. Weird and unhelpful staff. When asked ‘which do you prefer? The curry or gravy?’ The retort was ‘dunno. Both ok. Not bothered’ - simply shocking way to handle customers. The chips were delicious. The fish was tiny and I’ve had larger fish fingers. For what was in front of me, £8 for fish, chips and gravy I thought was pricey.2 out of 5. Won’t be returning anytime soon.

Lacking I decor but staff were helpful

The dog ate more of the fish than we did. It was so thin with soggy batter. The chips were ok but could tell they had been sitting for a while before we went in.

Called whilst walking around Bedale. Situated in the centre. Staff very friendly and asked if we’d like child portions for the kids instead of just assuming. Chips were lovely and freshly made so nice and warm.

We sat in the cafe at the front. Order at the counter. Food came in double quick time and was very good. Been coming here for 58 years.

To arrive and see people queuing out of the door is always a promising sign and we weren't disappointed. The service was friendly yet efficient and we didn't have long to wait before it was our turn. The chips are cooked traditionally and therefore full of flavour! Best of all, the fish was white, succulent and coated in deliciously light batter! Only complaint - the portion was HUGE and it was too good to leave any!

A few weeks ago we held our son's football team's Christmas party at a local venue where there were roughly 30 of us. We asked Steve (the owner) if he could cater for us and of course he said yes! We placed our order a few days before and we asked to pick it up at a specific time - 7.30pm. On arrival, everything was ready and brought out to my car in a huge polystyrene box to keep everything hot. We shared out the individual boxes of fish and chips and sausage and chips and we didn't hear a single complaint from anyone! The portions were huge, the chips were lovely and the fish was meaty and cooked perfectly. The battered sausages also went down well. Overall our experience with Hall's was fantastic and I'd recommend them to anyone. Thanks for helping to make our evening a successful one, Steve!

We visited earlier this week after a team building event at work. Food was superb , service fantastic , nothing was too much trouble and we felt really looked after. Thanks Halls!

I visited Halls Fish Shop in Bedale earlier this week with a few work colleagues and had a sit down meal in the restaurant section, I ordered Fish,Chips and Peas also had a cup of teas and the service was very good, the meal was really nice and tasty, all was served hot and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Everyone in the group was happy with the food and service.

We Visited halls yesterday with a group of work colleagues. The fish and chips are superb and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Very welcoming and a would highly recommend. Thank you DAVE ANDREWS

Didn't fancy much but fish and chips appealed. Couldn't have chosen better. No-one in the restaurant but they opened and made fresh tea - chips were gorgeous and the scampi sweet and succulent. Great value.

Curry sauce and mushy peas watery and absolutely tasteless. How can curry taste of nothing? Spoilt the chips.

Having read other reviews I was wary. To be honest, the staff were lovely and the food and portion size was more than satisfactory. Would definitely go again and recommend to others.

Really nice food here and portion sizes are quite small. The fish especially are more like kids portions but still very tasty.

The fish and chips from Halls tasted very yummy, and reminded me of how fish and chips used to taste. Used twice on our week long holiday, and faultless both times.

Good fish and chips reasonably priced

Really nice fish and chips there. Can’t really go wrong here, decent cheap prices and have a good varied menu. Food is really tasty & nice here.

As visitors to the area we called in for fish and chips / fishcake and chips for 5 people and were a bit concerned about the negative reviews. The queue of regulars showed that there was nothing to worry about and chips were great and fish very good, so it gets a thumbs up from us!

We regularly come here just because we enjoy the food. The one thing that always puts a downer on the experience is the service by the younger woman (younger compared to the man (actual Chef) and woman who wraps food - I believe they may be her parents). She never smiles, will not give you eye contact and is not polite at all. It is a shame and I always feel awkward now going in!if the food wasn’t so tasty we wouldn’t keep going.

Had fish and chips in the café before going to the bonfire. Very busy but the staff were friendly and the fish and chips were delicious. Well done everybody.

Thank you mr hall ,I understand that you need time off sometimes,but to stand and wait for my food for 30min is a long time for something that is only ment to take 5,the young lady at the till was very nice and could not apologise enough for late food which I found very nice (what I lovely member of staff she is )I also understand it was busy that night but still it took a long time for food to be taken out and put on the trays,not all the fish was cooked the same some were burnt some very soggy,I've been in before with my father and we both have some issues which we find need addressing to.

Called in here as two of the pubs I tried were not serving food on that day. Restaurant side of the shop is clean but let down by the quality of the food. I had haddock and chips with a mug of tea. The batter was too greasy and the fish itself hard at the edges, the chips were ok! The tea had a strange taste probably due to the water, maybe the boiler needs a good clean. They do not accept payment by cards, cash only.

I have been coming to Bedale as a regular for about 10 years or so and Halls has never failed to disappoint. The staff has always been polite and welcoming, even if we have come to sit inside, they are always polite and caring towards customers. It has only been in recent years that it has seemed to have lack of care towards the food. It was about a couple of weeks ago maybe more and I think the boss was away because another woman was cooking the food, I was waiting for 2 haddock and chips, 1 Pattie and chips and I asked for 2gravy and 1pot of peas. There was a slightly older woman I'd say 50s-60s and she was stood giving out orders to 2 other members of staff that were working at the time, she spoke in such ways I cannot even begin to repeat. I thought this was very disrespectful to other staff and not something that any customer would want to hear. On the other hand when I took my food home it was burnt and the chips tasted like perfume, I have been a regular here and the food has never disappointed me until then, I am not sure I want to go again because of 1 member of staff speaking inappropriately and the food was a disgrace. I would recommend going because the staff are polite but please get a better cook it's ridiculous!

My son and I visited the beautifully clean cafe area today. We were greeted by cheerful and friendly staff. My son is severly autistic and the lovely lady couldnt do enough to accommodate us. We had delicious, freshly cooked fish and chips, quite possibly the best and freshest fish I have ever tasted. Their kindness, high standard of cleanliness and scrumptious food makes it easy for me to highly recommend Halls Fish & Chips! Fantastic...👍

My wife and I have had fish and chips from here for years and years , being Bedale residents and have had some great meals here and some okay, but visited here two weeks ago and had the worst fish and chips ever.

We called in having visited Lightwater Valley where food was expensive. There is a clean and pleasant seating area. service was good and all of us enjoyed our food. unlikr most chip shops portions were not huge so no waste.

We had a takeaway from Hall's, and wish we hadn't. Dried up chips and flavourless mushrooms, no wonder it wasn't busy. We think the oil used was old, and judging by the other reviews this isn't an isolated occurence.

Nice food love it but don't like the fact you cannot go in the inside part when ordering take out from there

The food was totally manky, soggy everything, and the portion size was very small for the extortionate price, when I got back home to eat them, I seriously thought the grumpy lady had mistaken my fish for a small sausage after she slam dunked it on the counter ..... really it was that small,,,,,my 10 year old had a chicken burger and the bun was hard and dry......

The food and service at Halls is consistently good, far superior to that of the other local chippy. I would thoroughly recommend it.

We were visiting Bedale and found this little fish and chip shop. The customer service was brilliant they couldn't do enough for you. The food was good and it hit the spot and was at a reasonable price.

We stopped here for some chips on the way to our trip. There was around 8 of us walking in at a reasonable time (2 hours before closing time). We were not welcomed. We were asked if we wanted to eat in or take away to which we replied, "eat in". I couldn't believe my eyes! A woman in the back rolled her eyes blatantly in front of 4 of us and huffed. I have never seen rude like it! We then sat down to eat and the same woman served our food. She did not say a single word as she slammed down the food, there wasn't one smile throughout the whole service. As we left we each said thank you to the staff. One man replied and said thank you back. The other two women did not say a word.

Stopped off here on the way home from work for fish and chips, this is the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Expensive, greasy and the portion size is disgusting. I will not be calling in again.

I was in the area and stopped at this fish and chip shop to get some chips and bread rolls for a quick lunch stop. I was served by a rather severe young lady, who wrapped the chips (not asked about salt or vinegar) and rolls, then took my money without another word. The chips were lukewarm and stale, must have been fried earlier in the session. Hungry as I was, they were horrible and I binned them. Shame, I'll not be going back.

Staff not very welcoming on entering, No smiles or even a thankyou. Food is ok ish, nothing to shout out about. I think we will give this one a miss next time we are over.

Taste of my youth, Friday night treat for us when we were young! Still as good now. I love the batter, never soggy and scraps, i love the scraps! There is a lot to choose from too, my brother does not like fish, but loves the battered sausage. I have tried the entire menu and it's all been very pleasing. Even sea side fish and chips don't taste as good. And a 5* hygine rating says a lot about a place and the standards.

They use beef dripping, hence alienating vegetarians, who can't even eat the chips. Whilst this is not uncommon in the area, the attitude of the staff could be more polite and in the case of one of them her appearance could be more appropriate.

Proper British chippie - delicious fish, crispy batter, lovely chips. All served by friendly staff and at a decent price. I would never hesitate to stop by for a sneaky bite to eat, when I'm in Bedale.

We went when it was opening at 5pm expecting to have fresh cooked fish. And we didn't even have to wait 5 minutes for our order (2 fish & chips, 2 battered sausage and chips) got home to the horror of soggy batter on both fish and sausages and chips stale as out. Paid over £16 for horrible food. My Cats wouldn't even eat the fish. Won't be going back again.

Once again brilliant fish and chips this is not only the best fish and chips in Bedale I think is the best in the area! Consistently good lovely tasting fish with chips that taste great! You must try it.

Absolutely disgusting the batter was soggy the chips tasted like perfume and were only half cooked the peas were just nasty worst meal I have eaten definitely wont be going back there again what a total waste of money better off going to some were the food tastes nice dont no why people say its good its just horrible

I knew before we went that we had tried halls 2 years before but thought they deserved another chance.What a huge mistake.The fish was watery and tasteless(we ordered haddock and waited for it to be cooked)God knows what they use as batter it was beyond calling it mushy wet disgusting.Chips were just ok thankfully we had them to eat.We just put all 4 fish in the dustbin.

We ate in and ordered the cod, chips, mushy peas, bread and a drink. The batter was not crispy, in fact it tasted like it had been reheated from an earlier sitting. The mushy peas were horrible, chips bland, bread the cheapest of the cheap. Astonished when tea served with milk in it as far too much milk and very weak. Would not recommend.

We had two fish and one chips and they kindly shared the chips out for us and we ate on the tables outside. Best we have had apart from our local for ages. Must be good if we went twice!!!!

My aunt who lived in nearby Ripon would turn in her grave. Tea made with the briefest association with a teabag, end of service flavourless fish, unappetizing chips. Halls - this is NOT Yorkshire hospitality.

Tasty! Would go again. Has a side restaurant to eat in, or you can take away wrapped or unwrapped. Nice old fashioned fish and chips in a nice town.
